  1. No longer COVID positive. Just gotta check my anti-bodies and lung capacity to see if everything is in order and I'm good to go.

That's awesome! How are you feeling? And didn't you say you girlfriend had it too; how is she doing?

No after effects? If so, that's good.

We both are feeling super fine, but I still can't smell properly. Let's say I have 70% of it back. Stuff like coffee is easier to smell, but more subtle smells I can't feel unless I get it reaaaaaally close to my nose. The doctor said it will be back 100% in a few weeks and I don't need to take any medication, which is nice.

  2. Every time I read a Super Mario game review it gets clearer that copying stuff from other games is only considered a pro when Nintendo does, otherwise is "lack of originality" lol

      This is a garbage post.

Everyone gets flack for outright copying the competition. But when they build upon existing ideas and give them new twists and takes, they get praise. What are you referring to here specifically?

I didn't really care for the parts were Mario turned into a Were-Plumber and the unnecessary combat gameplay that came with it, but that was no weirder than when Sonic's shoes came alive and he throws them at the robots to control them-- All that to stop Eggman from marrying Amy I must add

    3. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

The opening  scene has the hero fighting the antagonist on a ship, and the hero ultimately loses the battle and is sent crashing down to Earth with an affliction of some kind. Immediately upon landing, they meet their new friend/hint fairy, and go on a tour of the world to save the day. The world map literally has you choosing where to go on a globe. The end of the game involves a climactic battle set deep underground with lava and other tectonic shit going on.

You've really got to reach to make them sound similar, and turn a blind eye to many important details.

  4. I wonder who at SEGA had the idea of calling Jaret Reddick to sing Unleashed's theme. Also, how that went. Was Bowling for Soup hot back in 2008? I know they did the Phineas and Ferb songs and OF COURSE, the Jimmy Neutron song.

    1. The Master

      The Master

They were a big thing about then, I remember hearing "High School Never Ends" on TV a lot.

I've heard that for previous games Jun picked a lot of the vocalists, don't know if it happened after 06 though.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Ohtani was the sound director for both Unleashed and Forces, but his English skills are limited. He said in an interview that he usually turns to Senoue to help find artists and vocalists, and I guess that's doubly the case when it comes to vocal themes. So with that in mind, it's very likely that Senoue recommended and reached out to Jarret Reddick.

FWIW, SEGA often don't contract full bands to write or perform songs. Bowling For Soup didn't perform Endless Possibility; it was SEGA's teams on the instruments and Reddick merely sung the vocals. It's similarly the case for basically everything else. Jean Paul Maklouf of Cash Cash said it was very strange writing the lyrics for either RFTS or SWYH (I forget which) to fit a track that someone else had composed.

    3. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

They did a lot of work for Disney around the mid 2000s so I do remember them still being a pretty big deal when Unleashed started making its rounds. Though, I do think this was at the tail end of that popularity. From what I remember, their genre in general peaked before the 2010s.

    4. Ferno

      Ferno

Makes sense now when thinking back how most songs would credit one or two vocalists from their respective bands/groups in the descriptions rather than crediting the whole band/group, except for the few exceptions like the Zebrahead version of His World where the whole group was there.

  5. Karl Urban as Kraven. I can dig that. I can dig that REAL good.

  6. Man, why SEGA and Sonic Team keep pushing the lamest things like Wisps and the Deadly Six, duck that.

You complain now, but they're gonna sweep all that stuff under the rug and pretend they never happened, as part of the soft reboot Sonic Prime will start.

Wisps are fine when thought out. In Colours, they worked. In Team Sonic Racing, they worked. In Forces, the idea worked but didn't stick the landing. They sucked in Lost World, no defense there.

This right here is the true sonic cycle.

    8. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

Silver was liked even back when he was an asshole and Big is completely harmless, he had one bad gameplay style that lasted like... 10 minutes of gameplay.

    9. The Master

      The Master

If I'm honest, I only started to hate Big after the Social Media guys got their hands on him.

    10. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

even so is kind of a non canon thing? you can say him losing froggy all the time is annoying but otherwise he is just a chill guy who was even dumbed down this last decade. Comics do him justice though.

    11. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Eh, I think I've come to the realization that I'm fine with both of those things. I just hated them in LW because that game simply didn't use them well (like a lot of other things in it). Both of them have been proven to work outside of it.

    12. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

Silver was the poster boy for Sonic’s shitty friends. Yeah he had his fans but the haters were way more vocal. The reason why folks started warming up to him in later years was because the comics making him cool and Evan Stanley’s webcomics.

Big was due to memes. And the fact that Big’s Big Fishing Adventure 3 is canon says something. It’s probably never going to come out but still.

    13. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

I just don't like the wisps as a gameplay thing because they sometimes could take existing characters abilities and put them into sonic. as just friendly aliens that pop up like the wisps they are completely fine.

    14. Wraith

      Wraith

I don't mind the wisps conceptually but it might be better to just try something fresh in the next game for the sake of it.

I haven't been given a reason to care about the D6 yet

    15. Jango

      Jango

I just think Wisps shoud've stayed in Colors because it was tied to that plot. I know RUNNERS of all things explained how they appeared on Earth/Mobius, but still. I never liked the fact that some one of them even gives Sonic abilities he used to have like the light speed dash and the spindash... for what reason? And the Deadly Six are just one dimensional goons that aren't even funny or cool honestly. Oh, the fat one likes to eat, the girl likes to do her nails, the old one is the wise... it's so boring.

    16. Wraith

      Wraith

Chao were only really plot relevant one time but they continued to show up in subsequent games regardless. If a mechanic works, then it's worth keeping. You can quibble with the story justification if you want but I always thought the Wisps's continued presence was easily justifiable with a handwave and that's what they ended up doing. The only problem I have with them is that they haven't really made them work in a game yet. Conceptually they're a cute idea that fits into Sonic's world pretty easily.

I don't have anything to say about the D6. They're emblematic of how far Sonic's character design and character writing have fallen for me.

      Old good, new Bad

I'm not going to say that people don't have legitimate reasons for hating on this stuff, but let's not this is the first time Sonic has pushed a contentious element (Silver, Big, and arguably Shadow) much to the ire of a specific portion of the fanbase.

And yes, there are still fans who hate those aforementioned elements to this day and wish they never stayed (i.e. anyone who still subscribes that Shadow should have stayed dead)

Bottom line is, this stuff is here to stay for better or worse and we gotta tolerate it.

    18. Wraith

      Wraith

I think we can tone down the metacommentary and just focus on sharing our thoughts. I'm not sure what the point is in pointing out cycles all the time when nobody ever argues otherwise

    19. Kuzu

      Kuzu

That is more or less how I feel though. I didn't care much about Silver at first, but I grew to like him over time and I liked what Flynn did with Zavok in Bad Guys.

I understand First impressions are everything and feelings don't exactly change, but I think its a bit counterproductive to deny anything that doesn't specifically cater to you.

Ok, a bit off topic but I swear we've done this before and it only led down a slippery slope.

It goes without saying that one should keep more of an open mind to certain things and not write shit off just based on the cover. Like, I don't think it is necessary fair for D6 detractors to write off the next arc of the comic because they're there. That being said, it should also go without saying that disliking shit is ok too.

We keep bringing up Silver like we had that same hindsight back in 06 when, in all actuality, there were legitimate, prominent reasons to dislike him back then. Mainly, the game he first appeared in was a dumpster fire and his role in it wasn't much better. Since then, the character has been used in more objectively better roles and yeah, more people like him well over a decade after the fact.

There's similarities here, yes, but let's not act like time (or actually getting good material) isn't the main factor here.

    21. E-122-Psi

      E-122-Psi

The Wisps and Deadly Six will likely end up the same way as the multiple playables thing, another fad SEGA milk with increasingly less quality and substance until they 'hear fans' complaints' and take them out and even make it a shilling point they're gone.

Even more so if there's the occasional exceptional media that brings that back and uses them well but SEGA is too busy milked some new fad that has overstayed its welcome.

The main problem is that SEGA keeps latching onto these quick fixes over actual quality. Playables, boost mechanics, Wisps, Classic Sonic, it all just feels like an excuse to get slack off on making a good core game, especially with how all them get increasingly lazier and more slapdash in use.

    22. Kuzu

      Kuzu

@Strickerx5 I agree, and I'm not saying that people shouldn't or cannot dislike the Deadly Six. I don't particularly care about them myself, but I also can recognize how quickly opinions can turn around as time and better material comes along.

Look at it this way; if Sega just acquiesced to fan hatred, they would have scrapped probably every single character by now, and that would have been more harmful in the long run.

I just don't believe in scrapping something simply because it didn't get the positive reactions you wanted.

The Deadly Six could be written out tomorrow and I probably wouldn't care, but if they're gonna stick around, then I would at least wanna know what they're gonna do for them.

  7. I just came across an old PC game I used to LOVE back in 99 called Gruntz. It's a puzzle game really, really clever and funny. I'm gonna download it again and relieve my childhood and maybe finally complete it.

And their method worked. I now wanna watch every upcoming Marvel series on D+. They got me. I also enjoy the weekly airing, as I don't have to worry about the folks who watch the whole thing the day it releases and spoil the shit out of it on the internet right after. It's much easier to avoid spoilers this way, and also, I can talk theories with my friends during the week before the next episode :)

@TheOcelot I didn't really like it either so I second that bold statement. Everything felt...tedious, and this is someone who went through the whole post-Naughty Dog selection and found at least something fun about them. It was also one of those projects that oozed "We're fixing this franchise, forget all the crap from before" in nearly every crevice which put me off further.

Crash is getting a big mobile game in Spring anyway though so it's not a big drought for him either way.

  18. Crash is turning 25 and Sonic 30 this year. They grow up so fast.

Luckily I moved from my parents' house a few months before the pandemic started for real in march 2020, so I only see them occasionally and for small ammounts of time, everyone always masked. But I'll avoid seeing them for some time more than ever now. As for the vaccine, yeah, I think that would be late 2023 if we're extremelly lucky... things are not looking good here.

  20. Wait, Aaron Webber moved to Japan?

  21. Corcerning the opinion that Modern Sonic as it is would look janky in a 2D game, I'd say his model in Sonic Runners is absolutely perfect.

      b̶u̶t̶ ̶m̶o̶d̶e̶r̶n̶ ̶s̶o̶n̶i̶c̶'̶s̶ ̶s̶h̶o̶w̶n̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶2̶d̶ ̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶t̶i̶m̶e̶

They were really on to something giving the modern cast more classic proportions. If that new 2D indicates a new third pilliar's coming up and it's not Adventure styled, those hybrid Classic-Modern designs would be a perfect fit.

Although reusing that look might come at the risk of bringing back Lost World's look, so in that case I'd rather go with handdrawn spritework instead.

  22. Wandavision is genius. Every little details is there for a reason and has an origin. I'm fucking loving this series.

10 days to wait for a result? I think if you did get it you'd know about it and with good fortune be over it by the time they say "yep you tested postive" and you'd be like "yep I knew that thanks for nothing".

  25. The Tornado Defense music from Sonic Unleashed is one of the most fitting songs in the entire series. It really makes you FEEL like you're flying through the skies.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Great music, but even worse gameplay than SA1's Sky Chase.

    2. Jango

      Jango

I actually don't mind the way they did, perhaps it could've been different, but Sky Chase isn't any greater imo. The level itself is amazing, I've played on a big screen recently, it's so atmospheric.

    3. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Sky Chase is really bad too. But at least it's not just a QTE that lasts several minutes. Both Sky Chase and Tornado Defense suck.
