GentlemanX got a reaction from Mr Silvia in What do you think of dark themes in Sonic when they're done right?
I don't feel like the backstory is really the focus of SA2 though. It's there certainly, but they're in the background for the most part; outside of Shadow's couple of flashbacks and Last Story. Hero Story has almost no reference to that material and Dark Story is limited just to the aforementioned Shadow flashbacks. The story is about Eggman trying to take over the world and Sonic and friends trying to stop him, for like at least 85% of it. And outside of the story you have a bulk of gameplay being devoted to the Chao Gardens, which are as far in the opposite direction as you can get. To balance the heavier aspects of the plot to make the game overall have wider appeal. Personally, I don't see how the ARK cover up is that tonally different from say the echidna massacre in SA1 or to go with a classic example, the concept and execution of the Bad Futures in Sonic CD. What makes the SA2 example really stand out is the use of humans rather than anthros, but I've never been keen on the argument that humans feel out of place in Sonic so.
Much as I like SatAM and the Archie series, their use of more serious content is not universally appealing in the fandom. In SatAM's case especially it's a major point of contention with certain fans. ShtH I agree uses it's serious material on a purely superficial level (the use of profanity and firearms alone should make that open and shut), but 06's heavier elements are used with clear purpose and I don't find them to be unappealing. It's the overall morose and depressing atmosphere of the game that makes it feel out of place among Sonic's other stories. There are attempts at optimism and levity, but their brevity makes it feel unbalanced and ultimately un-Sonic like. While I feel SatAM and Archie do reach that balance, others don't.
At this point it's clear I think the elements in question can work in the Sonic series, but not when isolated from the more colorful aspects of the series.

Bojack would be between Cell and Buu, Broly Second Coming during the Great Saiyaman Saga, Bio-Broly after the World Tournament Saga, Fusion Reborn after the Fusion Saga, and Wrath of the Dragon between the Kid Buu fight and the epilogue with Uub. I'm using FUNimation's terms since it's a handy way to split up the arcs. They may also do the 2008 special before Uub as well judging by how they handled Episode of Bardock and Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans.

GentlemanX got a reaction from Miragnarok in Are multiple playable characters still seen as an issue/
Largely the problem with Classic Sonic in Forces, at least on a conceptual level, stemmed from it essentially eclipsing Modern Sonic's gameplay like in Generations. People accepted that because of the 20th anniversary and the game's conceit as well as it's improvement over what was seen as a failure in Sonic 4.
If not for Mania, I think it's likely reception for Classic in Forces would have been seen more positively. You'd still have folks upset that Classic was taking up Sonic's screen time, but there would be people going "I'm glad to see Classic's gameplay hasn't been abandoned though." Mania does what Forces did but did it better, and not while taking screen time from his modern counterpart.
Take Shadow in Forces for instance. His being largely a skin for Modern was seen as a negative by some, but in general his inclusion in Forces was received much more positively than Classic. Reasons for this could be due to how long there had been since he was playable, the fact he had his own DLC story content, the fact he was entirely optional, the fact he played largely identical to boost Sonic, etc. It reinforces the argument fans want other characters to resemble the core game's gameplay while offering an optional alternative for further game time should they be inclined.

GentlemanX got a reaction from PC the Hedgehog in Dragon Ball (Warning: Untagged Spoilers)
The only saving grace for a Broly adaptation in my eyes would be that Toriyama's original script (outline? don't remember what he specifically did) was supposedly much longer than the film could realistically do in a standard length picture. If Toei/Toyotaro were to use that cut content in a Broly Arc, I'd pretty much welcome it.

I'm still getting issues (because they ignored my requests for monetary compensation). I had nearly two year subscriptions for both STH and SU both of which had already been extended after Mega Man and Boom were cancelled and my remaining issues for those were transferred. I haven't opened any of the non-Sonic comics, so I could check to see how much I have left later.

GentlemanX got a reaction from Lord-Dreamerz in I want a true Solo Sonic game.
Misunderstanding the tone of Sonic 1 is important if that's what you're looking for with a future Sonic game. Scrap Brain Zone doesn't make Sonic 1 as a whole dark any more than Big Boo's Haunt makes Mario 64 dark.
Anyway, I can say with no hesitation that a game with just Sonic and Eggman sounds dreadfully boring to me. I like that Sonic stories usually revolve around Sonic bringing about a change in another character and like seeing Sonic's extended cast of personalities play off of one another. If the game was just Sonic and Eggman, you only have one or two cutscene options (assuming there would be cutscene as you're contrasting your idea against Unleashed, Colors, etc). One: Sonic is by himself. See the scenes in Colors when he's making jokes to mute robots. Two: Sonic is with Eggman. See any scene where Sonic and Eggman interact since Adventure.
That's really it. It purposefully limits how much variety can actually be shown between the characters.

I hated the repeated levels in SASR. I get that it's the cheap option, but geez everything seems to be "it's the cheap option" with regards to this series. I don't like the cutscenes being barebones but I realized it was a possibility given Free Riders. It sucks that it's coming off of Forces talking heads cutscenes too.
This game has two things going for it right now for me: the story mode giving us new character interactions like with Team Vector and the fact that it's an easy to pick up kart racer I can play with my girlfriend.
This game feels so small. If it's really performing poorly too... man.

GentlemanX got a reaction from BlueSky in Sonic Forces Speed Battle (iOS - Hardlight Studio)
16 out of the 20 characters from Rio are now playable, just leaving Sticks, Eggman, Nega, and Wave. Not counting alternate costumes and forms, the remaining cast from Runners includes Tikal, Sticks again, Mephiles, and the Werehog if you don't count that as equivalent to Goth Amy and ESP Silver. The only character in Speed Battle so far that wasn't playable in either is Chaos, who obviously was included because of the connection to Forces. I didn't expect to see Zazz honestly so I have no idea how likely we are to see any of the above or otherwise. Pretty cool to see how many have shown up though.

Just to float the idea - Cream, Espio, and Charmy could be added as DLC if Sega and Sumo should choose so. I personally would prefer some odd ducks like Zavok, Jet, Infinite, or Chaos, but adding Espio, Cream, or Charmy would make sense as they're more recognizable. It's at least something to tweet or message the relevant parties about if you feel strongly about it.
