Let’s see if I worded this right.
Shadow has rejected his past, but hasn’t necessarily moved on from it.
He wants nothing to do with what he once was, yet lacks the humility to accept his mistakes.
After all, while pre-amnesia Shadow was weirdly content sacrificing himself and the planet over possibly fake memories, post-amnesia Shadow definitely wasn’t.
The confusing relationship with his dead creator doesn't help matters. While he hasn’t buried the hatchet, he has matured to the point where he’s beginning to question his parental figures and looks back on his upbringing in a different light. Did Gerald seriously need to build chaos creatures and teleporting hedgehogs with comet alien DNA to find a cure? Did part of the professor just need to see how far the pursuit of knowledge could take him?
The Ark was active during either a massive war or an arms race. While Gerald was certainly a family man and perceived as a savior, behind closed doors, the professor was disillusioned by the state of the planet. Even before snapping he was convinced that humanity was destined to one day bring about its own destruction.
With Shadow’s emotions towards his past slowly changing, so would his feelings towards Maria.
Once a nostalgic voice of guidance, she’s become a source of confusion and alienation. She represents a part of his life he can’t bring himself to confront, either because it dredges up regrets, or stirs up fears of him slipping back into a suicidal drone.
Due to the fact that past Shadow willingly swore to fulfill his promise to Maria even if it was under false pretenses, Shadow blames himself for giving in to any possible mind alteration.
His distance from people not only stems from a fear of loss, but a fear of being manipulated.
Being deceived by people he could care less about has become less threatening than the same from people he does care about. Thus why taking jobs from the army that ruined his life is easier for him than making friends.

So are we continuing the "generalise Japanese media with only the dumbest understanding of it through the lens of the anime that gets exported" trend this thread's been in the past few pages?
Here's some magic for you- funny animal characters are popular in Japan.
WHAAAT? HOW CAN IT BEEEE? EVERYONE SAYS THEY AREN'T!!"!!!
They're popular as children's content. Tiny kids; or as marketing materials for young women, part of kawaii appeal. Why do you think there's Sonic x Hello Kitty apparel? Why do you think JP Sonic X leans so heavily on being a show for 5-year-olds it outright uses designs from previous TMS productions for 5-year-olds?
Now if you'd rather switch to idiotic panicking that the comic will be infantilised instead of this idiotic discussion of shooting half-understood tropes of foreign media at each other, go ahead.
PS: "sonic was more popular in the west" means bull here. Consider:
    1. By that argument, fuck SatAM. Base it on StC- Sonic's the most popular in the UK.
    2. There's no clean direction of influence here. Sonic may be aimed at a Western audience, but it's still made by Japanese people with Japanese sensibilities. The Sonic games, the main product, the actual successful, influential, and relevant part of the franchise, are in their majority Japanese-pretending-to-be-American. Which is monumentally different from just "American", because it'll bring a lot of elements that "American" wouldn't think to. I mean, just compare the games to SatAM to see how yeah, no. American, in 1991, would've NEVER have been a cute but cool colourful videogame with simple designs that're appealing and easy to draw and overall a sense of peril that doesn't come at cost of lightheartedness. Instead, you'd get the entire nonsense that is the SatAM concept art development.

Uhm. I liked Topaz in Sonic X, she was fine.

It's because whenever there are human characters they try too hard to make them "important" instead of making them fluid characters. Eggman is fine, he's the villain, he makes sense.
Chris Thorndyke was shoved in Sonic X, was forced to importance and was just generally a annoyance because of this. He was ridiculous and the reason why I don't like Sonic X that much.
I don't despise Elise but she's boring and had no real personality trait. She also wanted to date a hedgehog... enough said.
I'm not against humans in the series, I'm against they way they handle them. I don't think I'd be too keen seeing humans again in a major role just because of their track record.

Even aside from it being Chris, why would you want some human kid with a bunch of gadgets running around with Sonic? I don't understand the purpose or the appeal, especially when Tails is already a gadget-using sidekick.

Chris is the reason sonic x will always suck to me. Hell i wish we got a second ova. Sonic x when it first came on was amazing. I was like wow this is epic sonic running from giant mechs, eggman launching attacks, oh theirs knuckles looking badass, but then we get teleported to the human world to a character more latched to sonic butt than elise ever wish she could be. And ill give elise points. she wanted to remember sonic but erased the events for the sake of them all. Chris sabotaged sonics way home cause he couldn't bear booing without him.

Then why make us think of the trash that is Chris Thorndyke if nothing about him resembles Chris Thorndyke? It's the same principle as the people who say "no really you could just remake 06 and change everything about it and it'd be good"

Humans are fine when put in the same artstyle as all other Sonic characters (because we all know what happens when you put Sonic next to realistic characters *shudder*), but they're not so fun when they take attention away from the blue hog himself.
What I'd really like to see, to make Sonic's world a bit more seemless, is other animals amongst the humans, living in harmony. This would make humans not stick out as painfully as they do. Plus, it breathes life into the world, and opens up for story potential (including racial topics, if ST really wants to go for it). Sonic Forces looks to be doing this, but I don't think they will.
Sonic in a world with humans is weird. Sonic in a world with both humans and animals so that Sonic and Eggman's existence feels justified, it's much better.

I would argue Vegeta isn't really close at all. People compare them because they are grumpy, but their motivations... and like everything are so differents its nuts, Shadow would actually hate vegeta as a character. Shadow if he's closer to anyone, it would actually be wolverine
But I guess that speaks to the point , there are quite a few characters like shadow, there are quite a few characters like all the characters in the cast. The sonic tropes for their characters aren't unique, what they do with them is why people like them, and their trappings.

Again that was Staci not Perci. I mean to be fair the writer of the episode is the son of one of the co-writers for the RS arc.

Just watched the episode. It was alright. The song wasn't that good and the beginning was kind of weak but it kind picked up at the middle. Plus the explanation for Team Cybonic is pretty reasonable.

My issue with Shadow is that Sonic Team hasn't found a way to implement him into the modern games. In a sense, it gives me the impression that Shadow's story was over once he became a hero who wasn't troubled by his past hence why Forces depicts him as a villain because that's the only way they know how to implement him. Shadow seemed to have reached a dead-end for Sonic Team.

I might be misreading this, but it sounds like "I don't like Shadow's progression in the game, but I'm going to blame the comics/Ian, and I also don't like him having a life outside of Sonic."

I really don't think we'll get Boom, pre-Sonic R spinoff, Shuffle/Chronicles, DiC, or New252 characters here. I'm pretty sure it will be the Sonic Team cast and maybe new ones. Maybe they'd throw some more popular characters in begrudgingly for fanservice.

For the ST roster, this still excludes dead characters like Black Doom and Pachacamac. Hopefully we get characters like Nega. I also want to see if they can write the Deadly Six worth a damn.

New characters are a lose-lose situation. Either they're good and we all cry when they're ripped from us forever, or they suck and we have to deal with their ugly mugs shoved in our faces and ironic fans.

Excluding Dr.Eggman... humans are fine in Sonic only in side roles in my opinion. I don't play/watch Sonic media for humans.... If I wanted humans... well I have near infinite other media I could buy for that instead!
As background characters or very minor reoccurring characters they are fine however. Just keep them art style wise the same as the rest of the cast, there's no good reason for any human character to look more realistic then Robotnik himself.
In the games I would like to see towns for the animal people too, not just human towns all the time. Be cool as it'd show us cultures for both that exist.

It's easy, just make them seem fluid. Elise and Chris both felt forced and didn't have notable personality traits that could make them interesting. Plus, they should really never be in a main protagonist role. People watch Sonic for anthropomorphic animals, after all. They should be like any other minor character and not overstep their boundaries.

I'd really just like them to focus on the main game cast for a while. Sonic, Tails, Eggman, Amy, Knuckles, maybe Metal Sonic. Then once we've got a decent grasp of those characters and the IDWverse in general, start introducing secondary characters, like Shadow, Rouge, the Chaotix, Blaze, etc. There's enough material to work with there that I don't feel the need to dig up a bunch of obscure characters.

    Professor Pickle tho.
In seriousness, humans are usually hated for two reasons:
Uncanny Valley (clashing with the cartoony Sonic cast).
Or having an overbearing relationship as well as lead role with Sonic which was pretty infamous in Elise and Chris's case which kinda gave people the wrong impression about them.
Relationship with Sonic aside, Elise isn't necessarily a terrible character at all, people just paint her that way because of that revival kiss.
Chris on the other hand is a very poorly written character, the show wants to potray him as this sad lonely kid with a sucky life....even though his life is already perfect.
He's rich, has actual friends at school, a smart grandpa, a maid and butler who take care of him, his parents who are famous do actually show up at times, and they want us to think his life is terrible? BS.
Did I mention he gets a little too clingy to Sonic? To the point where he's obsessed with him?
But I'm getting off hand, humans can be written well, there's not much else I can say since Rosedust hits the nail on the head.
