God the RE1 remake is soooooooooo goooooooood. What a beautifully crafted game. As a modern RE fan who honestly never properly understood the appeal of the classics even after playing them... this game is pure art.
Reasons I don't like Shadow's present backstory (and remember this is coming from my perspective of Sonic)
-I don't like the existence of Gerald Robotnik and Maria in the first place. One, they're not interesting in the slightest, and two, I just really don't see why we have to see members of Eggman's family in this fashion or at all. It's like showing members of Sonic's family to me; I don't want to see them and I don't think of them. It's just very strange to me.
-It is INCREDIBLY unintuitive to have a character that is, let's face it, a clone of Sonic, you bloody know this guy is a Sonic clone no matter how much you deny it, have a backstory that has absolutely no connection to Sonic at all. It's such a strange damn premise in the first place, this guy that looks just like Sonic, can move just like Sonic, and may even act like Sonic a little but he was created fifty years in the past as a way to cure diseases. What???
-And this is probably going to tick some people off, but I just don't see the need for a character with a position as big as he has (granted it's not nearly as large as it used to be) with such a tragic backstory. It's not even necessarily the darkness of it but it's just so out of place compared to everyone else, especially Sonic, Eggman, Tails, and Amy. It really reeks of the early 2000s and is one of the most dated aspects of the whole IP now. This isn't a "Sanic can't be dark it's for two year olds" type statement but it's not consistent with anything and really does reek of tryhard.
We have Sonic and Tails who run around the planet impulsively having fun, Eggman who's a madman who powers robots with flowers, and Shadow who was designed as a lab rat and wanted to destroy all life on the planet because he was wrapped in a government conspiracy where his dying best friend was shot and he hasn't gotten over it after fifty years and was talked out of it in literally 40 seconds, and now he's a major protagonist. Lol.
Maybe if Shadow's weird backstory was more like the Death Egg and treated as a parody of super cliche' dark past stories and played for laughs I'd like it more, but it's played completely straight.
-The alien shit is complete hogwash and I won't even entertain any of that
Pokémon Black and White came out seven years ago today.
I liked those games more than I thought now looking back. Not having old Pokémon encountered in the main game actually felt refreshing to me. I don't think it was as bad people made it out to be in hindsight.
GF's first actual attempt at giving a damn with the story, the absolute height of my competitive interest in the metagame, the hours spent in Entralink...good times.
OhI and it gave us Dad of the Year.
