Cyalume reacted to soniczone in Sonic Zone Forum- who here was a member?
Wow, I just stumbled upon this thread. I’m glad you all had memories — good and bad — of my site! That was quite the time sucker back in the day! I used to spend hours upon hours chatting with various members, crafting different themes for the site, and generating plenty of drama. It honestly shaped much of my childhood. I was in high school back then and holy shit I’m 30 now! I learned so much from working on those sites that I’m now making a living as a mindless drone working in tech! :-P
Part of me really regrets selling the site because I don’t even know where the money went (I was a stupid irresponsible high school kid back then) and the person I sold it to destroyed all the hard work I put into the site. Especially obvious since I tried — and failed — to revive the site many times! It was a huge hit of nostalgia to see all those usernames again! Thank you all so much for the memories!

I can't speak for anybody else than myself, but I am not looking at a Sonic game with the expectations of GOTY, I'm looking at it with expectations set by previous games in the franchise.

Perhaps Mania wasn't to their liking for whatever reason; but, any publication that can reward a passable score to a game a broken and unfinished as STH06 is one that I seriously doubt will see eye-to-eye with me in terms of what constitutes a quality product. So for me, personally, I'm willing to discount their opinion of Forces, yes. Their score will most likely be an outlier.

    Hey, by the way y'all.
If you don't want to support Sonic Team's current decisions (especially after learning basically everything there is to know thanks to the game leaking early), then there is an easy way for you to make your opinion known:
    Don't buy it.
If you stop buying bad games, they'll stop making bad games. In the words of Jay Sherman..
Granted, if you do want to see Sonic Team take this path, then buy it, sure. But if not, do not bother. You already know what you need to know about the game.
Still intrigued anyway, but don't want to support them? Use a service like Gamefly or Redbox to rent it (one game a month on GF is like $15, so you get it for a month for half price (more than enough time to play it and send it back)). Sure, GF or RB bought the game to distribute through rental, but your payment is going to them, and not Sega.
Just don't buy it. It's as simple as that. And while there's no telling if it'd make a huge difference in sales (let alone the future of the franchise), do it anyways for yourself. Don't waste your time, energy, happiness and money on something that's only going to leave a bad taste in your mouth and a feeling of disappointment.
    Do the right thing.

Cyalume reacted to Tracker_TD in Sonic fans, I'm curious. Why do you continue to support the Sonic franchise when SEGA struggles to keep the quality consistent? What's keeping you around?
Sonic's got a terrific aesthetic, a great character design, some kicking music, and a great personality. Sonic's a very character driven franchise; that's probably a decent part of the reason many give Forces a pass, despite the level design and all that looking a bit naff. Folks are attached to him in a way that's different to say, Mario.
To be honest though; I would've probably dropped out of Sonic by now if it weren't for a certain 2D game released in August. Forces looks dire and if that was all there was to show after years of Boom shite and Lost World, I think I would've just let sleeping dogs lie. The potential for more stuff like Mania has me excited for the potential of Sonic's future though.

That looked like an actual romhack.
I mean. It was a hack. But that's Sonic Team's actual level design. In fact, it's slightly better because of the lack of scripted acceleration and dash pads.
Jeez. I think I need to lie down. This broke me.

I was temporarily confused as to why you were just showing us Sonic Mania. Took me a bit to realize it was Mania with Forces' level design.

Located crack. Appears to be a small patch file that removes Denuvo for people who already own the game, as opposed to distributing the entire game itself (The "crack" for SADX back in the day was the entire game stripped of DRM/anti-piracy measures/disc-check or whatever, IIRC).

SEGA has kinda earned themselves the widespread distribution of said crack. Won't feel sorry for them.

    I'll make this concise:
    The Good:
    - The classic Sonic gameplay looks comparable to Generations. That is to say, less good than the actual classic games or Mania, but still pretty good. I imagine that if I played the game, I'd actually enjoy that third of it.
    - What little I've seen of Eggman seems fine. He's written well, and has some funny lines in the clips we've seen.

    The Bad
    - Not a fan of the boost formula at all to begin with.
    - The level design we've seen so far looks really uninspired and bland.
    - Putting Sonic OCs in an official game is a terrible idea.
    - Infinite looks like a typical by-the-numbers edgelord villain with no real personality.

So mostly negative feelings on my end.

On the bubbles and Hydrocity complaints, I agree, but since most of this is dedicated to special stage talk...

Naaaaah dude, lol. Half pipe is the absolute worst in this regard. It's almost purely memorization-based, with how the stages throw you into corners with rings or bombs so often, and requires around an 80-90% ring requirement for most of the later stages. They're straightforward, sure, but they are just as unfair as you feel these special stages are on player's first runs through them.
The special stages in this game are probably the most flat out forgiving special stages there's ever been in the classics. You can run for ages if you collect enough rings, giving you ample time to catch up if you did poorly before, and you can even catch up to the UFO at Mach 2 or 1 if you follow the UFO as closely as possible. These special stages give the most leeway a special stage has ever allowed in terms of requirements. The only thing you're tasked with is handling them, which again, you're given ample leeway to get a grip with in the first place. Just think of them as a racing game. Cut corners, and take shortcuts wherever you can. Sometimes blue spheres can mislead you, as well. Keep an eye on the track and determine what the best route is, as usually the UFO will end up going down those routes.
As for blue spheres, eeeh. They're still more reaction based than the Sonic 2 special stages, and you can just hover around and get your bearings at the cost of more speed, but the stages Mania uses are a lot more memorization-based than Sonic 3's due to learning the best ways to play and being thrown into unavoidable sections, yeah. Won't blame you for disliking them due to how complex they are (Personally I reeeeeally enjoy them for this very reason, lol) but they are entirely optional, so if they're souring your experience you should leave them alone for the majority of the time. And when you do feel like going for completion, you can always go back to Green Hill and alternate between the first two checkpoints for the fastest and easiest method at beating them.
Pretty sure with time you can get a handle on these, just like people did with the original classic special stages. Just don't let them get too in the way of your experience; you can always go back and complete them later on, no sweat.

This confuses me. Are you saying "Why are people upset that they have to be online to download the game, and then not play it on that same PC"? Or maybe I'm misinterpreting... I don't understand.

Anyway, the point is that Mania itself requires zero internet connectivity on its own, a point proven by the console releases. Always online is intrusive enough, but Denuvo could really throw a wrench in things, with some possible consequences being the game not running as well as it could without Denuvo/poor performance and the inability to create mods for the game which modify the executable file. That's pretty huge given what kind of game we're talking about here (a "classic" Sonic title) and the community's history with modifying these types of releases. This of course is in addition to the already-present Steam DRM, which itself requires you to connect to the internet every so often as is to continue playing games offline.  Despite this, Denuvo generally is not even particularly effective at what it sets out to do.

It's a just a pain to deal with in general. Things like this tend to make people want to pirate the game more, not less.

What is ironic is that Sega, the one company to encourage people uploading rom hacks online on Steam, is implementing this. Though frankly, I'm far more pissed at the lack of offline play than I am at the lack of potential modding. So, uh, they can either way get bent.

A few glitches happened to me also, and I'm playing the Switch version.
At the beginning of Hydrocity act 1 as Tails I immediately held all the way left at the beginning of the stage where you're falling from above and I got stuck in the wall. I was able to jump up and get out but it was pretty strange.
As Super Sonic during the very first boss in Green Hill act 1 I knocked out both heads of the boss at almost the exact same time and I just got stuck. The sign post never came, so I had to exit the stage manually.
And lastly, when I played the blue spheres undocked, I kept getting error notifications whenever I cleared the round, but it only did this when I was using debug mode thankfully.
I love the game but it's in major need of some polish.
