  1. Wanna know what grinds my gears? People were expecting an FE16 character and a Gen VIII Pokémon in Smash before we knew anything about either of the games.

      I don't see how that's odd, specifically Pokemon. Greninja and Incineroar were both unknown to the public when their development started.

      Didn't that happen for the last DLC for the last Smash game, that they added a Fire Emblem character who's game wasn't even out?

      @The Tenth Doctor

      But the difference is:

      -Smash 4 was out after X and Y, and Sakurai was given concepts of Grenibja before the former's announcement. In addition, Fates was announced before Smash 4's first DLC character, Mewtwo, was released (in other words, plenty of time for Corrin to start development).

      -Smash Ultimate was announced over a year and a half after Sun and Moon came out. Sakurai was likely given concepts to its starters when the project plans for Ultimate were underway, as Decidueye was going to be the Gen VII rep.

      That's not weird. They've done it before

      Plus, this happened as early as Melee where Roy debuted a year before making his real starring role in Binding Blade.

      Where's the difference? Sakurai could've gotten S&S concepts in November last year and would still have plenty of time to release a character at the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020, after S&S is out. The only difference is that the gap between the game coming out and the Smash character getting released is shorter.

      Okay, maybe I should've worded it better; in Marth' and Roy's case, nobody outside Japan even knew Fire Emblem existed prior to Melee.

      In Gen VIII's and FE16's case, they were announced in 2017; Smash Ultimate was announced on March 2018. The former two didn't even show anything at that time, yet people were already setting their expectations for a rep from the former two.

      Three Houses was announced in the same E3 2018 Direct as Ultimate, so there's at least that excuse. Sword and Shield, on the other hand? We saw our first proper glimpse of it when Joker was slated to release in Smash before the end of April.

      Oooooooh, you're talking base game.

      Yeah, I don't think that was likely at all. Not unprecedented (although Roy was just a clone), but unlikely.
