Hey guys. You know how Sonic fans think they have a reputation for being the worst fanbase ever?
Well right now the Star Wars fandom is in throes because of the Sequel Trilogy. And some of them are referencing the Sonic movie as a positive film for an old franchise. Good job, SEGA. :)

Saw it last night. I'm quite happy with this. Movie did what I expected but there were a lot of nice Easter eggs. Enjoyed Carrey and Schwartz a lot. Love the post-ending hints of course.
I never expected a great movie but I think this was definitely on par with the pikachu movie and if the box office holds up it will get a sequel. Would see again for sure.
Please, nobody go in looking for it to be some 1:1 dramatic origin story. It's a hollywood production for the mass market with lots of nice touches for fans. That's it.

BaronGrackle reacted to Blue Blood in So are Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations not considered good games now?
    thankyouthankyouthankyou
I've been saying this for a while. Colours and Generations were the first Sonic games to come along in years that weren't absolutely terrible (ala all of '06) or decent in parts whilst being marred by some truly stupid and overbearing elements (ala the Werehog in the otherwise mostly serviceable Unleashed). They were decent games that should have signalled some sort of return to form for Sonic. But they didn't. As quickly as those two games came, they were gone and we got another 5 or 6 six years of trash that included another Sonic 4, Lost World and three Boom games. Two years of good games, sandwiched between at least five years of bad games either side.
Roll on 2017 and we're finally getting two new Sonic games. Mania has already proven itself to be one of the greatest Sonic games of all time and faithfully expands on the Classic series. They took something that was already brilliant and made it better. The nostalgia involved is one of many key elements that makes the game what it is. And then we have Forces. After the failure of every other Sonic game released after Generations until Mania, Forces shows SEGA and Sonic Team backpedalling as quickly as they possibly can to try and save face. Lost World got a middling reception at best, and Boom took the series back to the lows of 2005/6. They're attempting to recreate Generations, but aren't aware of why it was well-received in the first place, and even more crucially haven't made an effort to actively improve it. In the face of Mania, the Classic aspects of Forces look particularly bad.
Colours and Generations were only stepping-stones. They showed promise that quickly dwindled and things haven't been good since. I can remember, way back in 2010, describing Colours as "the worst good Sonic game". Perhaps that's not the best way of putting it, but it does get the point across that it never reached the heights of the better games that came in the early years. Generations didn't improve much, and six years of regression later we're back in the same spot, except we also have Mania which is truly great. The failed potential acts against the games.

Mania's success does create problems for the next major Sonic game because it is arguably the most positively received game in modern times, and it is 2D.
There are some Sonic fans who enjoy 2D and 3D Sonic, but these are very different game genres. A lot of fans tend to prefer one over the other. And, most of the time, they get upset when SEGA mixes themes in those genres. Even Sonic Generations, though it was received well, has many fans who would've loved to focus on the 2D gameplay or the 3D gameplay instead of both.
Mania was a win for 2D fans. It had the gameplay they asked for, with nary a 3D element in sight.
This next part is important: it is impossible for SEGA to look at Sonic Mania as inspiration for success in a major, 3D Sonic game. The 3D fans should be scared snotless at the idea of SEGA using Mania as an overall framework.
Because that means they don't understand why Sonic Mania succeeded. They don't understand that Sonic Mania has zero appeal to 3D fans, and 3D fans don't want to run through fancy-graphic 2D sections of Chemical Plant Zone while calling it their new game.
EDIT: I say this as a 2D classic fan who raged at the homing attack being a mainstay of Sonic 4.

Well, Sonic Pocket Adventure actually had Eggman wear both his classic and modern outfits in the same game.
He wore the classic cape for the bulk of the game, then changed into the modern jacket at the end. One could make the argument that this game is the perfect "bridge" in the timeline for when things shifted to the modern designs, since we actually see one character "cross over" to their modern look in-game.
SA1 kinda waffles around about the modern designs "always being" what the characters looked like, considering icons of the classic designs appear in the Sonic pinball game in Casinopolis, and Eggman's classic design is also used in the Hedgehog Hammer minigame.

    I feel you.
The irony in the post though is that the modern timeline is essentially the evolution of the original timeline starting from S1. Sonic did all that stuff, somehow didn't age much, got taller, and his eyes turned green. Those details are irrelavant to the fact that all those stories happened in the modern timeline. You can consider that the Universe 1 sonic if you will. The fact that the stories aren't usually written well doesnt take away from the fact that "Modern Sonic" is the evolution of sonic on the original timeline.
The "Modern Classic" sonic is Universe 2 and represents the actual split. Sonic is still pre-adventure in Mania, which follows S3K.

To be honest I'm not super fond of Modern Classic, and I'm about as big a "classic era" fan as you'll find. Modern classic doesnt feel quite the same to me as the original did, at least how he was commonly portrayed in the west as well as the gameplay nuance. He feels like a reminder that SEGA remembers the surface level appeal of the character but has completely forgotten why playing the games became so addictive in the first place.
I didnt care that Sonic got 'a little' taller during his jump to 3D (although Sonic 06 was fairly offensive) or that he had green eyes then. I cared about the progressive loss of the gameplay identity and to a lesser extent the tone and art direction of the series. If Modern's gameplay was still on point, most of my issues with the series would go away instantly.

I don't think that's actually their intent. I assume what they're going with is that the original classic games happen to both Sonics, but in one dimension they lead to SA (or maybe Sonic 4 first if they still care about it) and the rest of Modern Sonic and in the other they lead to Mania and whatever else they might do with Classic Sonic in the future.

And I think Hurly was spot on when he said people loved the Sonic gameplay formula. People did love the GAMEPLAY, to the extent that you could stick any character there with comparable gameplay and people would still love it. And that's exactly what happened on a number of titles.
If Sonic Colors had starred Tails, or Knuckles, or Amy, or Shadow, or Blaze instead of Sonic while using the same gameplay, people today would be questioning if maybe it was Sonic himself that made the previous games terrible.

I think I remember reading somewhere that SoA didn't think Classic Eggman looked evil and/or ugly enough for a Western audience. So that's where the AoStH and SatAM designs came in. The "West-ification" of the Classic design always gave me Yosemite Sam vibes:

Whether it be rabbits or hedgehogs, they're always out to get 'em!
Personally, I would've been fine with just this look during Eggman's early years in the West; as opposed to the AoStH and SatAM designs.

While they never had the power to stretch, sonic turning into a big fight dude for a lot of people venture into knuckles territory,  along with some of the traversal aspects. As for shadow they felt as though the edgier design was trying to get into that shadow market. Friends were on the way out but he was still really popular , so why not make a sonic design that tries to evoke that feeling for people. And this wouldn't be the first time or the last time glances at infinite that they would try to do so, for that reason.
This in combination with rumors of shadow and knuckles supposedly being playable in the game at somepoint in development,  put bad tastes in folk's mouths.
And it got worse, while the next game didn't feature a werehog but it did feature the wisps. The next step in the idea "we will just put the different character type mechanics on sonic rather than you engage with them" and caused people to look back at the werehog as the same thing.

The characters having monster forms is cool and should happen again. Give me mummy knuckles.
My issue with the were hog and many others was , simply put...kinda just knuckles. I heard this before and I'm gonna steal it but " the were hog was just them slapping knuckles and shadows design sensibilities on sonic" and it felt rather unfitting. At a time where friends were on the way out , it felt as just a replacement. And that didn't go over well with the folks who wanted the friends around, it has always carried the stigma of "it should have been knuckles " which on some level I agree. This combination with the people just wanted sonic to return to form combined into a lot of disdain for the premise.
It's not completley hated, but it isn't enjoyed enough to make a return in any significant way. And that kinda sucks, because now they are starting to think about sonic's friends again,  I would totally like a game where everyone gets turned into spooky monsters.
But at the same time I do not blame people for wanting sonic to be sonic and just wanting to play as knuckles and not a weird version of sonic they may not like that seems like an obvious knuckles replacement

Indigo, as far as the eye discussion goes, you may be more on the money than you think. The whole "two eyes lodged together" thing isn't just a potential compromise, it's how Sonic's eyes are actually structured. I know that might sound weird, so let me pull some sprites from the Sonic 1 title screen.

See how Sonic's eyelids are, despite touching each other, noticeably defined as separate objects? I know they aren't drawn like this in more recent depictions, but I think it's an important feature to note, since it shows us eye definition we usually wouldn't see.
Now what happens when he opens them all the way?

Okay, now there's no explicit separation between his left and right eyes as there was with his eyelids, but you can still make out the silhouette of two ovals touching each other. It's like they drew two cartoon eyes smooshed together and omitted the inner outlines. Try drawing an imaginary line between them and you'll see what I mean.
Now let's bring his eyebrows into the picture:

As Sonic goes from his resting face to his "attitude" face, his brows come down and break up the silhouette of his eyes as they furrow. This is the most common expression we see Sonic with, so it's how people imagine him when they think of him. Unfortunately, since his unfurrowed-brow face is seen nowhere near as often, people seem to have forgotten all the details mentioned above and instead think of Sonic's eyes as being some kind of amorphous white mass with an inexplicable cleft on top.
Honestly, the whole idea that Sonic's eyes are somehow actually conjoined is such a weird case of fans taking a stylization feature way too literally.

Anyway, I guess the real question is whether or not Sonic would look okay with his eyes touching in a live-action setting. I mean, it's a no-brainer he'd have them like that in an animated feature, but Paramount made things hard for themselves by going the live-action route. The crew's first attempt ignored this design challenge altogether by just giving him those weird quasi-human eyes, but I'm not necessarily convinced that he needs to have all forms of cartoonishness expunged from his design to look believable next to real-life humans. Another cartoon character with similarly-shaped eyes also made the questionable leap to live action a few years back. It was Woody Woodpecker, of all characters. How did he do?

Well, cartoon Woody's eyes are basically touching each other, much like Sonic's. If you erased the line between them, you'd have pretty much the same thing.
For his live action design, his eyes were pushed slightly farther apart, but were otherwise unchanged in size and shape, so they still feel like they belong to the same character.
I get that using the Woody Woodpecker movie as a positive example is weird, but for all the flak that movie caught, Woody's design wasn't complained about much. When people found him unsettling, it had more to do with his psychopathic tendencies than anything visual.
Does this mean that Sonic ought to take this approach? Well, I'm not going to say there's only one specific way to correctly adapt a cartoon character to live-action, but I think most of us would have vastly, vastly preferred a take like this to the one we got in the initial trailer.

What are you on about? Why do you think I mentioned them together?
Anyway, so you're saying the best games have optional extra characters while 3D games force you to play others? It's more complex than that. The other more damning issue is that they all play far differently compared to Sonic's own play style. No one wants to play as Sonic then have to go learn how to play Knuckles' lame treasure hunting levels and Big's fishing or whatever.
In the 2D games where we have a time tested mechanical style the characters are designed in a way that compliments the base gameplay instead of designing a new style from the ground up for each character. While the only real differences between them all are few in number,  they were implemented in a way that added replay value by adding situations where one character couldn't access certain areas but someone like Knuckles or Mighty could make use of an alternate route thanks to the game allowing a character's different abilities to excel in a given situation. You don't get that same implementation in the 3D games, add to that the already flawed and inconsistent base gameplay and you're gonna have extra characters that are even more of a chore to play.
