Going to get my first COVID vaccine. Gonna try to keep my nerves in check, but after getting a panic attack after the last flu shot, I’m not confident  at all.

What the actual legitimate fuck is wrong with the internet nowadays?! How can people think stuff like this is justified?!
-
Simple, anonymity. Everyone can stay hidden and say or do whatever they want. As long as they don't use real names, or give any hint as to where they live then they're safe. What are you going to do, drive over there and punch them? You don't know their address let alone what they actually look like.
It sucks but that's just one of the downsides of the internet. This allows people to easily be bold and say things that they would never say to someone's face in person. People can easily spread their horrible thoughts and actions (in this case, heavy harassment) with absolutely zero punishment. Get banned? Alt. IP Banned? VPN.
Why stop what you're doing when no one actually has a way to punish you for it? It sucks but unfortunately there isn't really a fix for it.

Voltron? I've heard horror stories regarding it's fandom. Along with the She-Ra reboot, Steven Universe, My Hero Academia and many others...
In the UK, you can be prosecuted for online bullying, I think. Interesting that the poster also mentioned the mainstream media. Because they have been trying to gate keep, belittle or attack fandoms while pushing their own ideas for years. Though with the websites involved, you'd probably question if they are in fact "mainstream." I first learned about this through Star Wars and then the floodgates opened...
It is meant to be a escape, at least to me too. But people are demanding this and or that and when they actually do those things, the thing in question, no longer feels like an escape.
I don't like hearing about death, no matter who it is. It angers me too that this is happening and considering my already existing, self destructive behaviour, I can imagine a mob pushing me to consider the same ending. Maybe it's inappropriate to admit that. I'm trying to become a stronger and better person. It just feels sad when it appears that so few of us are doing that.

As a person who is currently writing fanfiction (I have not finished any... YET) on his IPad this is scary because I write outside the box for example right now I am writing a LEGO city undercover fanfiction (because I am a manchild) where there is a zombie outbreak and it is going to be graphic and dark AF but I have a plan on how to handle if there is hateÂ
- upload the first chapter as a pilot of sorts like with TV
- if IÂ get hate I just discontinue the storyÂ
- Write a new storyÂ
(If I sound insensitive I am sorry I am not trying to be insensitive it is just I talk before I think)

@Rourke You should be fine with writing your fanfic on Fanfiction.net, but I'd stay away from Twitter, Tumblr, and Archive of Our Own. That's where the antis seem to frequent the most.

Good idea I do not have a Twitter, or a tumblr but I do have an archive of our own I just won’t post it thereÂ

The Internet is a place full of scum and villainy even with its positive opportunities. It's not just fan fiction, there have been emulation programmers being harassed and even committed suicide because of people. Death threats from gamers/fans over little things in games/TV shows/etc. It hasn't just happened recently, it even goes right before mainstream adaptation. Heard of cases in the mid-late 1990s when the Internet was much smaller and not as global. Think it is all down to the carefree attitude and since a majority of the Internet is from the US, well...
Social media just makes it easier to post your views. A long time ago, one thing that was taught was don't talk about politics or religion as an unwritten rule. Now that rule is broken within a second.
As for Ao3, that really does depend on the fandom in question. The larger ones, yeah... They have issues. Some of the older high profile ones are more corrupt in terms of the fan base. Some smaller fandoms though are actually pretty chill. Agreed over Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc where it is pretty hard unless you fit into a crowd, Twitter alone has like two competing sides against each other. Surprised that the comment came from Reddit, another place where you literally have to be walking on eggshells. Seen people being more or less bullied there or worse for having a different opinion.
@LegoFedora I don't know... I've seen people say things that they would "never" say to someone's face in person. Some right nasty things too have said right into my face in public, whether it was a drug addict or an elderly woman.
Even people using their real names on the Internet, some people are still safe because they either have their own inner circle around them or go to obscure websites. So it is not always the case of anonymity.
