I've honestly been extremely wishy washy on whether or not I'd want another 3D Sonic game right now. I am aware relying on the Mania formula won't work forever (without any other Sonic game as a supplement, the furthest I could see it going is a trilogy before fatigue makes itself at home), but I have been sorta feeling like Sonic Team might need some time off.
But again, wishy washy, had conflicting ideas as to where to go from here. Sometimes, a break helps. And while I don't think continuing from Mania's success should be a permanent solution, it could at least be a temporary solution to buy Sonic Team some time to recharge some batteries.

I didn't even think they did a good job promoting Forces. The bulk of what they did came so close to it's release. It was weird.
However, it was far better than this. I really don't feel it should be normal for months to go by and be presented with almost nothing.
Then again, this ensemble game doesn't look like it's going to have much to it so they likely have very little to show. Like with Forces.
And they truly did do a much better job promoting the first two All-Stars games.

    SEGA/Sonic Team/Historical Evidence does.
Who they allow to be playable has seen some shifts over the years, admittedly. Cream used to be a lot more prominent back in the day and Vector was no where near used as much as he is today. However, they've got a very expected pattern that they seem to adhere to as far as who to expect as far as playable characters.
There are five Olympic Games and they stopped adding playable characters to the roster past the second one. When it comes to spin-offs, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, Metal Sonic, Shadow, Silver, Blaze, and Vector are the 10 that you can always expect nowadays. I've reached a point to where I always expect them by default. Sometimes, once-in-a-blue-moon flukes will happen like Knuckles not being playable in SEGA Superstars Tennis or Blaze not being in Forces. It's not a 100% full proof system but it's usually how things go.
Unless it's a mobile game, they hardly go beyond the call of duty as far as characters are concerned. The furthest I've seen them go was in the Rio Olympics, where they did a thing where in one specific event you could play as one character you couldn't normally play as... but that was it. They weren't allowed to be fully unlockable across all events which is honestly more frustrating. I'd honestly rather they not have been playable at all in that case but I didn't even buy the game so whatever.
Cameos in those games were fairly reliable for the most part. Espio and Charmy were at least refs. Cream got to announce stuff with Omochao. Jet, Omega, Rouge, and Eggman Nega were at least boss characters. Those games aren't really the norm for Sonic spin-offs though. This is honestly the first spin-off in a long, long time that's had itself both 100% Sonic centered and fully focused on something that would rely on a neat cast of characters to beef up its roster.
However, despite that, they couldn't even get in the full teams. They put in Big (because memes) and Omochao (because Chao Gardens were a thing people liked according to our business charts) and that's it. I guess Omega was a neat surprise though. I would not have called that. I suppose there's only so much you can split apart the teams to squeeze in all the popular characters though. At least two of them would have to remain the way they were.

No. Sega will now focus on Team Sonic Racing and maybe the movie first, before they announce the next big game. Unless the next big 3D game is a tie in game with the movie.
But if not, than the next new 3D game should only than come out, if Sega finally figured out, what they want to do with it. I don't care if it takes them 5 years or maybe even 10 years. They just should finally figure out a formula that works for a 3D Sonic and stick with it. Before this happens, I do not see any reason, why they should bring Modern Sonic back. Modern Sonic can't have another mediocre or bad game in his line up. Not even Sonic can survive this long. One day, if their continue with this routine, all the people including the fans will loose hope in the 3D games and maybe even in the series in general.
There for, I really hope, that the next Modern Sonic game will only than come out, when they finally have a vision of it.

SA2's story is kinda... meh in my eyes. Back when I was younger I actually thought the story was kinda cool and compelling. But when I got older I saw all of the many flaws this story had and how out of place it felt for a video game series starring a cartoon hedgehog that eats chili dogs. It really felt like Sega tried to copy the dramatic story telling of other series back than.
They always do that with Sonic. Always want to make him hip and cool and with the times. Maybe they should just give him an identity for once. Every other series knows want it wants to be. Mario is lighthearted fun, Zelda is a fantasy adventure story and Crash Bandicoot is just whacky and silly.
The first step would be to give Sonic for once his own identity. Because I think if the series finally would have one, they could easily build the game around it and do not have to worry about trends and facts.

I actually did once a test with one person where I did choose all of those characters (plus Zazz from Lost World) and I asked him if he would recognize the game series they all are from. He thought Black Doom is from Halo or a Halo like game, Elise from FF or a Square Enix game in general and with Chip and Zazz he thought are from a Nintendo game like Kirby or Mario.
The tone of the Sonic series is actually also something Sega finally should decide on in which direction it should lead. A story can't be light hearted and family friendly but also dark and super edgy at the same time. We actually saw in Forces how much of a cluster this could end up with, if a writer tries to please as many demographics as he/she can.
At this point I do not really care in which direction Sega wants to take Sonic in terms of world, characters and story. Either make the story simple and light hearted like a Mario game, adventurous with a bit of a silly undertone like a Zelda game, creepy like a Five Nights at Freddy's game, super hardcore and edgy like a  God of War game, overly complicated like a Kingdom Hearts game, vulgar and gross like a Conker game or layered and complex like a Life is Strange game.
Just pick for once a side, Sega! Give Sonic for once his own identity.

Time isnt the issue. Its vision and focus.
More time (than the 4 years it took to make forces) isn't going to cure the series issues. What will fix them is for SEGA/SonicTeam to have a clear vision for what they want the brand to be. Then they need to stick to their plan and realize they cant please absolutely every sect of fans, but they can make the series popular with general audiences again by having a strong brand with a clear identity, and consistency...which is what really matters for an iconic series like sonic. When people no longer are confused about what the series is and come to expect excellent games, the series will be fully restored. But they need to pick a direction without worrying about ticking off one of their many subgroups of fans. It almost doesnt matter what direction they decide to go in (they should probably try to remember what made the series popular in the first place though) as long as they are consistently excellent about their offerings.

I have a feeling they will go in a Adventure like direction, not like with the 2 Adventure games from the Dreamcast era, but games that have a similar feeling. Fans demand since years, that Sega should bring back the Adventure formula. Meaning the next game must have...
    1. A mature (maybe even a dark story).
    2. More playable main characters and only the fan favorite once (meaning Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Blaze and Silver must be playable).
    3. Crush 40 must do the music for this game.
Those 3 things seem to be biggest demands for  a 3D Sonic game by the fans. I personally still think that the parkour system from Lost World has potential and they should not get rid of it completely. But SA formula seem to have a much higher priority for the fans.
Sonic Forces is technically kinda like SA2 in many aspects: Dark and super edgy story, more than just one playable character, more than just one gameplay still, a military (sort off) is involved in the story, the main antagonist is a super, over the top edgelord, we have once again music pieces with lyrics, almost all of Sonic's friends are there, and the level themes are more closer to that of the Adventure games with a big city, a dark forest, a space station and a desert and the over all tone of the game is more closer to that of SA and SA2.
I would not be surprised if the next game will be like SA and SA2.

Right.  That's the problem with establishing a recurring ensemble cast; people start to expect to see them in every game.  It's all or nothing.  (Although with that said, I don't think other fandoms are quite so different.)
