  1. Man, if every fake Sonic leak turned into the game it said it was, we wouldn't even be in a drought right now.

  2. If the other NATO members decided to launch an invasion of America from the Bay of Pigs to enforce the result of a democratic election, I would just sink in my chair and drink my Irony Tea.

      CrownSlayer’s Shadow

Hate to sink that idea, but they’d hardly make it halfway across the Atlantic to even begin the first stages.

You’d need at best 4-5 aircraft carriers just to stand a chance.

Only fair shot would be Canada going nuclear and making demands.

  3. "Give Forces some slack, it was only developed in a year". Not a good excuse.

If we're being charitable and saying the dev time was 18 months, thats the same time Fallout New Vegas was developed in that that games a bona fide classic, it's state at launch aside.

But hey, it's not fair to compare a game with indepth rpg, dialogue and open world interactions to a game you can beat in 2 hours by holding down the go fast button.

    1. Dr. Mechano

      Dr. Mechano

Majora's Mask was developed in a year and it was a masterpiece.

Frankly, that Forces' development time was a year is inexcusable anyway. The last 3D Sonic game (produced by Sonic Team, so not counting Rise of Lyric) before it was Lost World, in 2013. Sonic Team had four years to put something amazing together, but didn't.

I don't know what Mania's development time was, but it's clear that despite a smaller team and lower budget, they put together a far more solid game with less resources.

    2. Misty Milo

      Misty Milo

Actually, Forces was developed over four years. It's full-scale production was one year, but the entire project was four years.

Which, honestly.....is worse than them just having only one year to make the game.

    3. BadBehavior

I know, I just used New Vegas because it's more recent so no one could throw the "games cost less to make back then" argument.

Also if we're counting sheer time then 06, assuming it started development directly after Heroes released in 2003, was developed in 3 years. They had more time than the game that nearly killed the franchise, and the end result was still aggresively underwhelming. If 4 years isn't long enough to get a good sonic game, then how much time does this franchise need?

This is why I say that the amount of time is irrelevant if you don't spend it properly. For all we know, they spent 3 of those 4 years measuring each others genitalia and the ones with the smallest were assigned to work on Classic Sonic.

    4. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

A game can spend nearly a decade in development and still have a short production time and turn out great (Team Fortress 2) if the team involved knows what they're doing. Sonic Team didn't.

And here we are now, over three years of the four it "took" Forces, and the next Sonic still has yet to be offically announced. Reassuring, innit?

    5. Wraith

Full scale production is the only time that should count, but people like four years because they like being dramatic

    6. JezMM

Not that Forces needs defending, but I'd argue that FO:NV is still not a fair comparison because they had an established, tried-and-tested gameplay structure to work with.  I'm not a Fallout player, but as far as the impression I've gotten, New Vegas didn't reinvent the wheel, it just took Fallout 3 and made a REALLY good follow-up that was free to iron out any issues that F3 had and be more inventive with it's scenarios and story in order to not just feel like a mission-pack-sequel.

Making a Sonic game is just plain hard because neither the devs nor the players are still sure exactly what to do with him to make a good game.  And the staff at Sonic Team are either not talented enough or are not being given enough time/money by SEGA to do it.

It's a guess as good as any, but I think Sonic Team decided to make a bland game that they knew they could manage that at least works in an attempt to keep Sonic's reputation treading water than risk doing something inventive that would need iteration and risk SEGA forcing them to release it before it's ready and tarnish Sonic's reputation once again.

And even when they resort to re-using the Generations formula, there's all that talk about how they had to rebuild the gameplay engine from scratch due to all the Lost World remnants found in Forces' code.

But... maybe they made the right call, who knows.  General opinion of Forces is just that "it's that other game for the kids that came out after Mania, the proper Sonic game" as oppose to the black spot that the fans think it is.

Anyway, point is, Forces is still mediocre dross, but matching it up to a New Vegas or a Majora's Mask is comparing apples and oranges.

    7. BadBehavior

"neither the devs nor the players are still sure exactly what to do with him to make a good game"

One problem with that: They did have a good game. With Generations. 90% of the fanbase were just asking for Generations with original stage themes. As far as I can tell, no one was forcing them to crudely jury rig the Lost World engine to include boost mechanics. They had a good framework and they ruined it.

    8. JezMM

90% definitely feels like an overexaggeration - I see far more interest in creating a new original playstyle using Sonic Adventure as a starting point than Generations.  And it's clear they couldn't re-use that code or else they would've done.  And while we can certainly blame Sonic Team as an ambigious entity for that blunder... it's hard to know how much of that was the Forces' team's fault.

    9. Dr. Mechano

      Dr. Mechano

Yeah, I don't know about that 90% figure either. A lot of fans really want them to take another crack at the Adventure style instead of another boost game.

  4. Also props to the guy comparing Sonic to Star Wars: Original beloved trilogy, followed by new era (Prequels/Dark Age) that tries new things but mostly botches it and becomes an industry laughing stock, followed by another era (Disney/Colours) that overcorrects for the mistakes of the previous era, making something so blatantly soulless and commercial that everyone hates it except the new fans growing up with it.

  5. The comments are just gonna be that meme where it's basically "NOOO YOU CAN'T HAVE FUN WITH THIS GLITCHY BROKEN MESS. SONIC GAMES ARE GOOD NOW, WHY DO YOU HATE FORCES?" "hahaha mach speed go brrrrr".

    1. BadBehavior

Ok I stand corrected. Most of the comments are "thanks for making this, I feel the same way" or even "I might not like the game but this is an interesting perspective". Here's my favourite:

"There's a reason why so many reviews of the game devolve into nitpicking to explain what went wrong with the game, while not mentioning any core issues... because the game has a solid core. It's everything surrounding that core that's the problem. Many of these issues wouldn't be that big of a deal on their own, but when put together, they create far bigger problems. I always wondered why people praised P-06 despite all it did was making small, seemingly insignificant changes, until I realized... these small changes are the ones you make to save the game. Because all these little problems are what killed the game. To quote a movie I quite enjoy, "If the foundation is solid, everything else can be fixed."

Compare this to Sonic Forces, a game that is creatively bankrupt. It's not as technically flawed as 06, but if you ask me, it is a far worse experience because of how lifeless it is. The problems with that game cannot be fixed, and trust me, people have tried, but the only way to fix Forces is to scrap everything and start over from the beginning. To me, this represents what happens when you're so afraid of failure that you don't even try in the first place. In short, they killed Forces with one precise stab to the heart, and then they we're proud of the fact that it was technically less wounded than paper cut man."

      The Sonic 06 Cycle-

      - New big game gets a lot of hype

      - Game releases, gets plethora of bugs, critics and customers alike let down

      - People say its the new Sonic 06/Superman 64/Notable Bug-filled Game

      - Some go as far to say it's even worse than said games, when in actually have never played them or just finding an excuse to defend them

      - New Game eventually patched and fixed and the comparasions eventually die off

On a similar note. I remember seeing someone on Twitter earlier in the week being furious about how IGN gave the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 a lower score (4/10) than Sonic Forces (6.9/10).

Of course, this was despite IGN giving the (notably more polished) PC version for the game a 9/10 score; and the PS4 version having widespread mediocre scores in general for how much of an obvious beta that version of the game is.

I honestly nearly made a status update about it, but figured it wasn't worth the time.

We all know how the many reckless shifts in gameplay and storytelling Sonic has made over the years has created a lot of conflicting preferences and how either Sega or Sonic Team or both really have no idea how to appeal to them all. (...) Maybe I'm just naive, but I don't think Sonic fans are so splintered where they can't all be relatively satisfied. They aren't unpleasable: they're just tired of lackluster games and thoughtless, obnoxious compromises.

      My favorite part.

  8. Just had a guy on reddit claim that the reason I think Sonic Forces is the worst sonic game is because I just haven't played Shadow, 06 or Sonic 4. Because me having actually played those games (which I have) and come to the conclusion that Forces is still worse is apparantly a pigs flying level impossibility event.

    Never change, Sonic fanbase. 🙄

  9. Fortnite should add Sonic skins. Hun Troopers, Black Arms, chaos power mythics. Hell, I'd even accept having Green Hill Zone on the map if it meant I could dig the whole thing for materials and build City Escape on it instead.

some of us classic fans gave classic sonic in generations a pass because while it wasn't accurate, it was still better than sonic 4

(people were also happy to have the original design brought back after sega claimed they weren't bringing it back for sonic 4 with the 'it's a new game so it needs the modern design' excuse)

The last fix Sonic 4 needed was Sonic's design to be dialed back to the old one but thankfully we can count on Sonic fans to leverage their influence well and focus on critique that's helpful and productive

  12. How would those whose first Sonic game is Forces react upon playing the older (better) Boost games?

"Ugh, why are these levels so long? And why do I have to platform and use my gamer skill? Why can't I just hold boost to win?"

    1. Zaysho

If anything I'd assume they'd like them more?

  13. Happy 10th anniversary of Sonic Colors basically defining the entire direction of the series. For better or for worse...

  14. I recently wondered why I like the return of N.Sanity Island in Crash 4 when I hate how Green Hill Zone keeps coming up in Sonic games.

Then I realized because Crash was dead for most of the 2010s and didn't overuse N.Sanity Island enough to grind it into a tasteless paste like every Sonic game Generations onwards did to GHZ.

Well that and N.Sanity Isle has more going for it than just 1. Green and 2. Checkerboard, so even if it did come back, theres always some visual variety to it.

    1. StaticMania

It's also a world and not just a single level

  15. Remember how Todd Howard came out and said that a voiced protagonist in Fallout 4 wasn't that good of an idea and everyone reacted "Yeah, no shit"?

I wonder if someone from Sonic Team (doesn't even have to be Iizuka) will come out and say "Maybe putting Classic Sonic in Forces wasn't a good idea" and everyone will react "Yeah, no shit".

    1. shdowhunt60

Aaron Webber would've been the one if that leaked beta script was anything to go off of.

    2. Snowragnarok

Heck, Classic in Generations was pushing it.

  16. UK Cinemas are usually dead silent (Usually cos I go later in a films run when its quieter). But I remember one moment it wasn't.

Avengers Endgame and we went to see it. Theater was packed. And what happened when we saw Thor... and his buddy was playing Fortnite, of all goddamn things. The entire theater let out a collective groan, not unlike when Artifact was first revealed.

I still remember "Guys calling me a dickhead again"

    1. Ferno

Wild how they thought Forknife is still gonna be relevant in 2023

    2. Tracker_TD

Hilariously, my first 'UK cinema wasn't silent' moment (besides when a fight broke out during Tintin, somehow) was... Sonic

When Tails showed up at the end, it was utter madness. There was cheering, screaming, I'm pretty sure I heard one row singing Sonic Heroes at some point. I was gonna do a little 'woo' but the explosion of cheering caught me completely off guard. It was the first showing of it in Manchester though, so I'm guessing the theatre was just full of Sonic fans. Bought a big ol' smile to my jaded face.

  17. I wanna live in the world where 06 is another mediocre dissapointment in a line of mediocre dissapointments while Forces is the irredeemable garbage fire that nearly killed the franchise.

  22. Do you ever think that the people who wished for a Sonic 4 back in 2008-ish are like the people who thought Mighty No.9 would be the new Mega Man? I can't help but smile endearingly at them and think "Man, weren't they chumps? 😆"

What are you even on about? People wanting a certain game has nothing to do with a company's sorry attempts to deliver. I eventually got the Sonic 4 I wanted when SEGA released Mania. Mega Man fans wanted a good new Mega Man game and thought that MN9 looked like it was going to fit the bill; it didn't, and that's not the fault of the fans. They weren't "chumps" wanting or expecting those games to deliver.
