  1. I remember my first experiences with gaming in general were at a daycare when I was 4 years old. There we had an MSDOS computer and a Sega Genesis. Me and the other kids would take turns playing and beating Sonic 1 & 2. This is a recreation of the TV set as I remember it. https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/df972321-3901-4a87-9e51-6d3056393d74/90s-Kids-Television-with-Sega-Genesis

  2. If ever there were a Sonic Mania 2 of sorts, it'd be really cool if it started out with Emerald Hill Zone. I would like to see mostly new zones, but Emerald Hill has never been remastered or even referenced anywhere in any other Sonic game other than Sonic 2. Plus, the tee lopes remix would be sick! :)

    1. tailsBOOM!

      tailsBOOM!

Also Casino Night. Those two Zones should be the Sonic 2 reps (For 3 I'd recommend Ice Cap; for Sonic 1 Scrap Brain and Star Light; for % Knuckles Mushroom Hill and Marble Garden, for CD Collision Chaos and Wacky Workbench).  Plus four or more new zones to go with it.

    2. Marcello

      Marcello

I hope there are absolutely no old levels.

Though, I'd take Emerald Hill over Green Hill or Palmtree Panic if there needs to be a Green Hill level.

    3. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

I hope there are absolutely no old levels. 2

I prefer Palmtree Panic over all of these though.

@tailsBOOM!okay, CASINO NIGHT? seriously? It has been remixed to death, it has been in Generations, basically Lost World, Sonic 4 ep. 2, Sonic Pocket Adventure, and many others!

... Tbh yeah, I don't want any Classic levels remixed ever again. Though Knuckles Chaotix has Marina Madness so that doesn't count.

    4. Kiah

      Kiah

I don’t mind Classic levels being remixed. Yes there’s a nostalgic factor but they were changed up in Mania so much it felt like a new experience.

Also Chrome Gadget needs to be a playable level. It was fun in the competition mode and I could only imagine what it would be like if it was a full level. And the remix I’m sure be sweet!

    5. Blue Wisp

      Blue Wisp

      I want Route 99.

With all the cheap deaths and all of that.

    6. Biggs

      Biggs

Emerald Hill would be a sick choice.

You know what, I'd kill to see Launch Base make a comeback too. Banging tune and a really cool setting that deserves to be further explored

    7. Pelvic WOO! engine

      Pelvic WOO! engine

I'd like to see aquatic ruin remixed.

      Call it, aquatic fixed. 😁

    8. TCB

      TCB

We need neo green hill zone

    9. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

If I had to choose another eight zones to remix, I'd choose:

      Spring Yard from Sonic 1

Aquatic Ruin & Mystic Cave from Sonic 2

Tidal Tempest & Quartz Quadrant from Sonic CD

Ice Cap, Launch Base & Hidden Palace from 3K

Casino Night is my favorite level of all time 😞

  3. Never have played Skies of Arcadia. Has anyone here? I've been curious about the game for a long time.

    1. DanJ86

      DanJ86

I have. It's been years though.

I think what set it apart from other JRPGs is the ship battles. The world is one that takes place in the skies with floating landmasses that act as the countries you visit. To get from one to the next, you'd use flying machines often in the shape of a ship. As you play, you'll be forced to combat enemy ships with your own, starting with traditional cannons that you can later upgrade with other weapons. Eventually, you'll be able to form your own crew.

Specific people out in the world could be recruited to travel with your companions. The story has it's own twists too and I'm not even sure if I ever completed it.

    2. bmn

      bmn

Good game. Battles are a bit slow, and magic got a really bad deal*, but it has good mechanics, flows well, and has an entertaining story. SoA and Grandia 2 are the two classic Dreamcast JRPGs, and they have similar, but very differently executed, ideas about how to do interesting battle systems.

The Gamecube version, Legends, is the better version, apart from the slight mangling it does to the sequenced music (DC had a more capable synthesiser, who knew?). It emulates well on Dolphin.

      * (it uses up SP, which you have to painfully build up during each battle and generally want to be spending on special moves instead; it also uses your characters' MP which is a pain to recover; and then it turns out you can buy consumable items that cast the magic but don't use SP or MP)

  4. Though I really like Sonic Mania, I also think that if there were to be another Genesis-Sonic type game that it should take some inspiration from Freedom Planet. Having enemies that only hurt you while attacking and incorporating kicks and punches as well as power-up/dashing abilities could add a lot to the experience.

    1. Sean

      Sean

I don't think sonic is cut out for combat. It's a game designed to keep you on the move and not dwell on fights. I also think the combat in FP is pretty janky requiring you to get way too close all the time and tank the damage.

    2. Tracker_TD

      Tracker_TD

Yeah, agreed with Sean here. I hate FP's combat with a passion, feels like an extremely awkward mishmash of Gunstar and Sonic that wasn't as thought out as it could've been.

    3. Unidus

      Unidus

The dashing ability (at least with lilac) seemed to help with the jankiness of hand-to-hand with some enemies though. Honestly I think I'm just a big Freedom Planet fan and am going to find myself having trouble to objectively argue points xD However, can we at least agree that the boss fights in Freedom Planet were pretty cool in pacing? That's probably one aspect that I really enjoy in the Freedom Planet series vs Sonic. Though in Mania there are a few bosses that you have to slow down to fight, I really think longer and more intense battles would be a neat addition to a future Sonic title... Once again, could be the rose-tinted glasses talking in regards to Freedom Planet lol

    4. Tracker_TD

      Tracker_TD

I would like more Treasure-styled bosses, but I'd rather look at something like Eggman Hates Furries for that. FP's bosses exacerbated the issues I had with the combat, they're what led me to just stop playing.

    5. Unidus

      Unidus

I respectfully disagree. But, then again to each their own :) Personally, I found the challenge in FP's boss battle and there weren't many* times that I felt that when I lost, it was at the fault of bad mechanics. However, even I can't say that was always the case.

    6. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i could see removing contact damage (though in some cases being physically in the way is about the only chance enemies have of hitting you) but FP's combat is not even very good within FP, and it would seriously cut into the flow of an actual sonic game.

  5. Have there been any talks of a Sonic Mania 2? Seeing as Sonic Mania was so successful it would seem almost incumbent.

    1. Ferno

      Ferno

if there have been, it's probably very hush-hush right now, but tbh I feel like the Mania Team has moved on to other separate personal projects at the moment. This is gonna sound weird and ironic, but Sonic Team really needs to become their own "Mania Team" so they won't need to rely on outside devs as much for quality content.

    2. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

This is Sonic Team we talking here. Of course they won't work with the Mania Team again. If they had known they were signing their death warrant by letting people who understand Sonic game make a Sonic game that run circles around them, then they wouldn't let them make Mania in the first place.

There's also Option #2, where they inevitable make Mania 2 to cash in on Genesis pandering alone.

    3. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

We'll definitely see a sequel within the next few years or so. It did way too well for it not to. Not to mention the fact that SoA is still rolling hard with it.

Though, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the original team doesn't come back for it and the quality drops a bit. For a while, this series has been more of a stepping stone into other game series. We see people from ST leave all the damn time and go off to work on games like botw. That or they use their success to launch their own projects.

And I can't blame them in the slightest. Sega probably doesn't do an awful lot to persuade them into staying and with the current state of the franchise (and where it'll likely be a year from now)... yeah, I probably wouldn't want to further risk my livelihood on it either.

    4. Unidus

      Unidus

Yeah I dunno. I heard that Takashi Iizuka seems pretty sour about the whole thing. It's like it pains him to acknowledge that Sonic Mania was far more successful overall than Forces. I guess I'd be salty too.

    5. CleverSonicUsername

      CleverSonicUsername

It may very well have changed since the last time I saw news about it, but back in May they confirmed it was not being considered at that time. Which is probably a good thing. Give that team a break, give them time, and let them come back with fresh ideas and a renewed energy to tackle the sequel with.

    6. Kiah

      Kiah

Sonic Team and logic doesn’t exactly mix for the most part. Even when it’s an obviously outstanding idea.

I wish they would get it together and if anything take some inspiration from the Mania Team and make a game with a clear direction along with some evident pride and passion and an experience that's enjoyable the whole way through.

    7. Milo

      Milo

The above replies demonstrate the exact problem I've been calling for some time--the idea of TaxStealth and Friends being the first and potentially last word on future Genesis entries. The entire paradigm of Genesis Sonic is too great to rest solely on the shoulders of a small group of individual freelance developers; especially so in case they're either not interested in making followups or aren't available to do so.

Sega should be/should had have been scouting for another division/studio to take the reins proper in making more Genesis Sonic projects following Mania's success, a proper development team that understands and cares about making Genesis Sonic games in the same way TaxStealth and Friends does. Emphasis on Sega being in charge of assigning Genesis Sonic projects here; hoping for Sonic Team and Dimps to take the mantle or make that decision themselves is a forlorn hope, as they haven't been even remotely interested in the original direction in any meaningful sense in decades (it is very telling that Sonic Team as a studio did not have any actual input in Mania's production).

    8. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

I could have sworn Taxstealth said they were working on something but maybe I just assumed or imagined that.

    9. Unidus

      Unidus

I'm just worried that without the team behind Mania it'll be almost impossible to catch that lightning in a bottle again. Lest we forgot that there was a time when SEGA and Sonic Team thought that Sonic 4 was what fans would want...

    10. Milo

      Milo

@Blacklightning Last I remember/heard, Stealth was still working on his studio's Headcannon game engine.

Taxman...? I don't know. Before Mania's announcement, he revealed himself to be helping out with Freedom Planet 2's production (specifically assisting with coding the game engine, I think), and he mentioned interest in making a 3D game in an interview earlier this year when asked about the oppurtunity, but that's all I'm aware about. (He was also talking about developing a 3D game in general, rather than specifically developing a 3D Sonic game.)

There was also a tweet that showed pictures of him and some of the Mania production staff (including Mania producer Lola) on a trip in Japan a couple of months ago. Maybe they might had met up with Sega of Japan about making more games, but that's speculation...

Well a Switch one would be nice too, since I’m not sure I’d want the Unleashed PC to be Denuvofied.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

We all kind of preditcted the future. We had hundreds of ideas on what would make the most revolting looking Sonic ever. Once we learned this movie would be live action, many knew that they would all come true.

  8. Wish there could have at least been one new remixed Sonic track in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 😥

It's okay my dude 😉  We all make mistakes

  10. Personally I think they could've used the CG Sonic Model from the opening of Unleashed and mixed it in with live-action and it would have worked fine for the Sonic Movie coming out next year...

That would of been a million times better than what we currently have...I’m sad now.
