There's been a couple of reactions from people who have seen the film at advanced screenings.
This is a review from someone who didn't like the film but thought it was fun. According to Reddit, he points out this:
The CGI of Sonic looks unfinished in lots of scenes (probably because of the critics and reworking)
Full of references from Game and other medias, incluiding Mario for some reason.
Jim Carrey is near perfect as Robotnik, but he doesnt use the same clothing as he does in the games until very later on.
James Marden doesn't work as a comedian duagonist alongside Sonic. Jim Carrey is miles funnier than him in the movie.
Sonic backstory is sad as fuck for some reason.
Third Act goes downhill and it's pretty bad.
Game theme song is not used in the movie. Mostly contemporary pop songs.
Very repetitive movie, with lots of "Sonic being fast" jokes.
Leaves open for sequel at the end, with title card and all (like Mario movie did) So a sequel will likely depend on the movie's success
Here's another review from someone who enjoyed the film. He doesn't really seem like a great film critic, however, every film he's gotten to see at an early screening (he always praises them), has always gotten positive reception from most critics.
Another person who has allegedly seen the movie is claiming that it is flawed, but fun, and that Sonic and Robotnick are the best characters
I'm expecting mixed or decent reception like Detective Pikachu. Probably one of the better video game movies. Keep in mind again, this film has been called cheesy by a lot of audiences.

    Hey guys!
Keep in mind that the film is having its private premier screening tommorow in LA. We might here some criticism.

I don't think that "final trailer" that random Twitter poster talked about is happening. I honestly think that it would have been shown this week or last week if it was really THAT soon. And plus, movies that are only an hour and 30 minutes normally don't get more than 2 trailers these days.

With all this being said, I may leave this forum for a while to avoid major spoilers now. I think it's also time I admitted, I know a few people who worked on this movie. I know some people on here are probably not going to enjoy it because it's essentially "Not MY Sonic!" for some people, but as a movie on its own, for people with an open mind, and general audiences, I honestly think it's going to turn out well for them. I think it will be decent. Definitely one of the better video game movies.

All of the promotion for it right now is completely normal. Of course a restaurant is going to promote it, toys and merch is going to be made, and SEGA would have something to do with it.

Honestly, I actually don't think they're doing enough with advertising. Boom had more promotion than this.

Not gonna lie, the lack of funny lines and reuse of that same "I HAVE NO IDEA" scene is sort of bothering me. But still, very curious to see this movie and not doubting good comedy just yet. I think the "almost constantly" line is little funny, but not hilarious. Though again, that's also reused footaged.
Edit: to be fair, we have been warned that although this film is good, there's some cheesiness

Again, considering we haven't seen the entire film, and that this is an origin story, it's kind of reasonable as to why they don't look like badnicks. This takes place during a time before Sonic and Robotnik met, and we know that Robotnik gets crazier as the film progresses. My prediction is that Sonic is the one that caused him to have a fascination with capturing animals and using their powers. I wouldn't say that's a spoiler because it's pretty clear that's what's happening in this film. A sequel or possibly towards the end of this film is when we start to see badnicks develop.

Also epic photos, where did you find that?

I'd rather have an adaptation of an already existing property try something entirely different and new that we've never seen the character be involved with before than something that's just the same thing we have seen before.

Sonic being an alien and entering the human world is in fact something we've seen before (it's not even the most original kind of story), but going more in depth with that and using it as an origin of how Sonic and Robotnik first met is interesting to me. Showing what Sonic was like as a child, and how he controls his power, is indeed interesting to me.

I honestly like that this ADAPTATION is taking an entirely different and unusual approach to the franchise. I don't like how Sonic was originally designed in this movie and looked nothing like Sonic, but I do like that there's a completely new story for this character to tackle for us audiences to see. If this film wasn't advertised yet, and there were test screenings, and I was to choose to whether or not I should watch a test screening for an animated Satam film adaptation based on the comics, or a test screening of this movie, (only knowing what the stories are for these films and nothing else) I would probably watch this one just because it's new premise intrigues me.
"Live action Sonic The Alien Origin Story" intrigues me just because of how bizarre it sounds. And I really think it could be pulled off with good execution.

Haven't seen that video yet, but if I'm going to be honest...I wouldn't mind some kind of Sonic reboot spawning from this film. The Sonic franchise has such a confusing timeline, setting, and rule on what's canon or not canon. It's like we get a completely different soft reboot everytime they change the voice cast and it just adds more to confusion. I think they should make some sort of spin off adaptation (like a film series, cartoon, or even anime) to explain the entirety of the story of these games in a proper less confusing timeline. I wouldn't even mind a continuation of Sonic X to be real, since they already got Adventure 1 and 2 down. It'd be cool if we got to see that series or these films adapt games we never got to see adapted before. Like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic CD, a better story for Sonic Heroes/Shadow The Hedgehog, the Sonic Advance series, the Sonic Rush series, the two storybook games, Sonic Unleashed, etc.

And no, I'm not really thinking of Sonic fans themselves when I say this, I'm once again thinking of general audiences who have never played these games before. They could now visit these stories from another medium such as film or a series.

"Let me know if you wanna go round two with the blue!"
"Basically it looks I'm gonna have to save your planet."
"Look at this! I took 9 million steps today."
I'm assuming it's going to be a combination (or probably a character growth) of Sonic's goofiness and snarky behavior. The origin of how that trait developed. Kind of reminds me of Sonic X in a way.

I chose that because Sonic is acting as if saving the world is a simple or fun essential task (hence the word "basically"). His tone of voice and the fact that he's smiling with somewhat of a smug expression while saying that, kind of gives off a "I'm going to have fun kicking Robotnik's ass" kind of vibe to me.

Everyone keeps saying "Sonic needs to be cool" but don't understand how subjective of a term the word "cool" means to people. Many people view that word completely differently. I know people who DO think this film looks "cool" and they're not even Sonic fans. Do you want him to be a stereotypical 90's character that tries unbarably hard to be cool? Do you want him to be exactly like modern Sonic? Do you want a Sonic similar to Star Lord from Guardians Of The Galaxy? Do you want Sonic to be quoting stupid outdated slang/memes? Just saying "I want him to be cool" isn't descriptive at all.

I don't blame the team for making Sonic act like a Looney Tunes character with childish charisma. This is a comedy. A live action film comedy about a cartoon animal that runs really fast, destroys robots, and can teleport. Sonic Boom got pretty wacky as a comedic cartoon as well. And it was praised. I personally think this whole zaney speed dynamic in this film could be a really creative unique execution of comedy in Sonic that we've never seen before (rather than just seeing something done over again or taking the already silly idea of a live action Sonic movie super seriously).

I should also make mention that trying to appeal primarily to children isn't going to help Sonic or SEGA either. So I'm not opposed to Sonic's gaming rating going up to a degree. The problem with making Sonic too child-geared imo, is ..... Little kids aren't the ones investing in him like that, anymore. Thats not to say they never buy his games, but They're not the ones with $60 to blow to keep the franchise going. And if they do, they're usually spending that money on Phone Apps, AAA games or games with more exploitative and immersive multiplayer features (ex: Fortnite, Minecraft and ironically the GTA series). And while Nintendo can boast a wider child audience, that's largely in part because they managed to maintain brand loyalty from the previous generation; Adult fans who introduced their kids to Mario, for example. Meanwhile once SEGA's fans get beyond a certain point in age, they're discarded. And I'm not talking simply about the SatAM/Archie crowd either. I'm also referring to people who liked the Adventure series, and some of the other earlier 2000 titles. SEGA can't keep its older fans around long enough to maintain brand loyalty. And as a result, they get less children who are interested in buying their games.
Now, I'm not saying SEGA needs to make Sonic rated M or to make it too mature to the point it feels try-hard (*cough* Shadow's game *cough!*). but, just to keep older fans more in mind when they make games. people over-estimate the degree younger children contribute to the gaming industry on their own. Especially with the cost of producing and selling games going up. Part of SEGA's marketing woes have historically always been their inability to accept hard truths. Just because SEGA WANTS to make kids the targeted demographic doesn't mean they're reliable enough to make the primary source of investment. Just like how in the late 90s/2000s, SoJ tried changing the more mainstream Sonic to be more Japanese-appealing despite the fact.... Japanese weren't buying his games.
From my experience, I find SEGA's making Sonic games TOO child-geared. To the point they have no identity anymore.  The world itself typically feels like a generic Mario rip-off. And if I wanted that, I'd just go watch the real thing. Their biggest mistake I think, was trying to make a single mainstream version of Sonic, while discarding other popular incarnations of the series. Debilitating mandates, as well as this insistence that he and the other characters act like classic, Mickey Mouse-esque, timeless characters who never develop when..... No one's looking for those kinds of characters anymore. Having other versions of Sonic would have not only appealed to a wider market, but could have allowed the characters for example, to develop without effecting another storyline. Additionally, it would have allowed the brand to transition in and out of new things once certain trends died down. Megaman for example, has many different versions of the character, and part of SEGA's entire crossover with Capcom and World's Unite was showcasing this. There's no excuse.

I agree. The rating system is so skewed. There's so many animated movies that have literally nothing wrong with them, but have the PG rating slapped on. They're basically just G rated films in disguise. I feel the same way about a lot of PG-13 films these days as well. They're just PG films disguised as PG-13 films.
And yes I know about the labels. They're skewed as well. Inside Out is really rated PG for "themetic elements and some action"? That's ridiculous.

Edit: At least Detective Pikachu had swearing and Spider-Verse had some swearing but also major death and violence. At least shows like Adventure Time and Regular have actual mature themes and violence. At least Rango had both swearing and violence. Did you know The Simpsons still mostly gets the PG rating today?
But why is The LEGO Movie PG? Why is The Grinch PG? Why is Wreck It Ralph PG? Why is Sponge Out Of Water PG? Why is BUMBLEBEE PG-13?
