  1. I launched SA2 on steam, thinking it would run terribly, like Arkham Knight did, but I was thankfully surprised to see it run at a smooth 60 fps... at least when it wasn't in fullscreen mode, but even there it ran okay.

  2. One Piece for the GBA is... not great. I tried playing it yesterday, expecting it to be amazing, but ended up being disappointed. The combat was okay but shallow, enemies were pretty annoying to deal with, it was too easy to die in that game I enjoyed most of the platforming though.

the story is just a really simple interaction of the first couple episodes, and while I normally wouldn't mind that, since DB: Advanced Adventure also does this, but the way they come across it is waaaaaayyy too simple for its own good.

  3. Just finished Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure, it's a really damn good game. Great combat, Great one-on-ones, the story is easy to digest with some pretty good humor, it's a pretty fun game. I highly recommend playing it

I played that back in college, it was a good time. Honestly always hoped they did more in that vein going into Z or something.

hey I need help, so I managed to get myself stuck, how do I get myself out?

  5. playing Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure right now, and it's so much fun. beat-em-ups are always a blast to play.

have you played Streets of Rage 4?

      iambitter21

not yet, but I have played the original Streets of Rage games.

  6. I never understood what made Cosmic Wall the "best" mech stage in SA2. Maybe it was because of the fun gravity gimmick, which I'll admit is pretty damn fun, but I wouldn't really call it the best one.

Iron Gate is a much better stage in my opinion, there are tons of moments that challenge you to maintain your momentum by shooting enemies in your path, high-risk/high-reward moments that grant you an efficient chain, and it's a really great start to the dark story.

People also don't like the mech controls so any level where you have to engage with them as little as possible will be their favorite.

    4. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I hate how weak and heavy jumping with the mechs in SA2 is, so the low gravity makes the level way more bearable. All of the other mech levels suffer from any of the following: incredibly claustrophobic layouts, platforming with a weak jump over death pits and shit tons of enemies and attacks spawning on top of you or attacking you from off camera. Plus falling off a ledge in levels like Sand Ocean because you tried to turn is the worst.

Cosmic Wall does away with all of those problems. And it's quite satisfying to be able to build up combos so much. The entire level makes you feel quite powerful.

But... Simple changes to the rest of the levels makes them pretty good too. Swapping out the cheap enemy/trap placements for fairer ones would help a ton. And so would a slightly higher jump or longer hang time. And as long as we're talking about control changes, the mechs should be able to turn on the spot, instead of requiring such a wide turning circle. There are just so many little issues with the way that the mechs were designed in SA2 that makes them feel clunky and frustrating. You make tiny mistakes that don't feel like your fault and you aren't given any  chance to correct them. Cosmic Wall is the only mech level in the game thats free of these frustrations. Even if you miss a jump or fall off the edge, you're normally able to start hovering and land on a lower platform before plummeting.

      JezMM

I always find Cosmic Wall a bit of a drag actually, I feel like it could do with being about 75% it's current length, and the lift sections force you to go a certain speed with is a pain.

However, doing those massive combos and making shortcuts through clever upwards hovers is pretty fun (when the camera behaves itself, anyway).

@Blue Blood Personally I never had a problem with the controls. I understand that Gamma does fair better when it comes to controls, turning feels smoother, the jump is pretty high, and it honestly trumps SA2 mech controls a good bit. But that doesn't make the Mech controls inherently "bad" In my opinion.

The mechs run at a moderate pace, as opposed to Gamma's more slow walk (when he isn't in wheel mode that is), the hover is an improvement from how it was with Gamma, even having a pretty useful hover-jump, locking on to a enemies is a lot better because the bottom half swivles when on lock-on mode, Gamma had to move his entire body to aim, which wouldn't really work for SA2's more linear, corridor-y mech stages. The jump isn't really that bad either, as I said before, you can combine the jump with the hover for a useful hover jump, which makes platforming a lot less of a pain.

as for enemy placement, I will admit that it can be easy to run into an enemy that you may or may not see coming, but after playing the level once or twice it becomes pretty easy to read where the enemies are. I'll also admit that turning can be a bit stiff, it feels weird when it takes you a second to fully turn your mech at times, but that's the only thing I fully agree with you on.

  7. okay, now it's SA2's birthday

happy actual birthday SA2, you're legacy will always go on.

  8. I have a really huge thing for Branching Narratives in video games, doing different things that change the main narrative into something different is something that really interest me.

Wario Land 2 is a pretty good example of this, finding secret paths leads to secret chapters that change part of the story, from small bits to the entire thing. there's even a secret chapter that requires you to keep sleeping in the beginning of the game.

  9. Death Chamber is a good stage 🙂

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I enjoy several of the treasure hunting levels in SA2, but Death Chamber is not amongst them. It's really difficult and confusing to navigate your way around. You're stuck on very narrow corridors and have to follow specific paths to get to places, which is really counter-productive when the radar works on only one target at a time. The treasure hunting levels are at their best when you're given free reign to explore them at will; Meteor Herd and Pumpkin Hill are great, but Death Chamber and Mad Space are not. The one-target-at-a-time radar was altogether a bad idea once the levels got bigger than Wild Canyon and Dry Lagoon.

So yeah, Death Chamber is super bad to play. The atmosphere is great though.

    2. ChaoLaChao

      ChaoLaChao

Death Chamber and Mad Space are unironically the worst stages in the entire game. You can't change my mind.

    3. iambitter21

      iambitter21

I understand. I personally had no problem with the stage, but I'll admit, hints carry the stage really hard.

    4. Wraith

      Wraith

if you know where all the shortcuts are it becomes a really easy stage to navigate

    5. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

      That's a pretty big if.

    6. Wraith

      Wraith

i personally thought it was nice they tried to make stages that were more interesting to navigate than flying between landmarks. the execution is mixed all over the game but i like this one.

    7. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Okay, I'll level with you that "flying between landmarks" was a hallmark of too many of the stages. But Death Chamber is still a hot mess. It's too big and too labyrinthine. Egg Quarters is fine.

    8. Wraith

      Wraith

Egg Quarters's main gimmick takes way too much agency over the player IMO.  Death Chamber is a maze, but thankfully that's all it is. Helps that I played SA2 at a time where I was still patient enough to figure something like that out so it became second nature to me.

    9. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

My patience for game design have waned A LOT as I've aged. I remember A-ranking Death Chamber and all of the other Knuckles and Rouge stages in a marathon session with friend all many years ago. But I get fed with that specific stage so easily now. I'm not willing to run around aimlessly until I find the answer and know the environment like the back of my hand anymore. If you didn't already know the layout of the stage, learning to understand it was a pain. In Death Chamber more than any other level, it bothers me when a key was in a location that I'd already visited, because finding your way to places you'd already been was such a long process. The hints are largely useless unless you already know the layout.

Egg Chamber was always fine, because navigating it was never a pain due to the fact that it was concise. The sentry robot wasn't a bother to deal with either; you got plenty of warning and there were shadows everywhere. You could either run, or camp in a dark spot for a few seconds whilst it passed by.

  10. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SA2 🥳

  12. I really didn't like Kirby and The Amazing Mirror. I tried to like it, but I kept getting lost. The game has no sense of direction so it's really easy to find yourself in the same location you previously were, and it's just not a fun game to play. Because of Amazing Mirror, I thought that Metroidvanias weren't my thing and that I'd probably hate all of them, and that's when I decided to play Wario Land 3 a couple days ago and It was absolutely amazing.

Despite it being a more Metroidvania approach to the Wario Land series, it's a lot easier to know where you're going because the game TELLS you. Knowing which chests you need get are also easy, when you begin the game you have a limited move-set, so you'll only be able to reach places that you are able to go to. once you gain more and more items that help you move around, you can get later chests.

I can stress how much of an improvement this was from the experience I had with The Amazing Mirror, everything about the game is charming and fun and I thank Wario Land 3 for helping me get the hang of what Metroidvanias are.

    1. VisionaryofSUPER

      VisionaryofSUPER

Amazing Mirror is the way it is primarily to emphasize that multiplayer by having everyone far and away from each other. But it does hurt single player by making it more aimless.

  13. Looking at this tweet really makes me think. they hyped up tails having the ability to lift you out of pits so you don't lose a life, but in actuality it's an arbitrary version of the usual live system. All I gotta ask now is: what was the point of tails flying you out of pits in the first place? It doesn't really change much and it overall feels like wasted development time. I guess tails flying you out of a pit instead of falling to your doom would kind of make more sense, but it still overall feels pointless.
  14. can any of you guy recommend me any good Gameboy Games to emulate? I already have the Advance trilogy, Wario Land 2, 3 & 4, SuperStar Saga, Pokemon Ruby and Sonic Battle, but I don't have any ideas of what else to get.

I hate this boss with a burning passion, the timing for when you need to tackle the bear is so miniscule near the end, sometimes when I try throwing a needle at it, it bounces off and I miss my chance of hitting it. Screw this boss, it's bullshit

  16. Ironically, the Xbox port was the only version of SA1 I have played. It honestly wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
  17. I think Colors Ultimate is looking to be pretty sweet, just a few things tho. This is the model of Colors Wii's sonic This is the model of the remaster it's looks way worse than before. the shading is off, sonic has no visible mouth, and his eyes barely move. I hope this get's fixed in the full release.
  18. man I wanna make more status updates but the only things I have on my mind are unleashed-related topics.

    4. Zaysho

      Zaysho

Square's showcases are usually kind of garbage, especially if you don't care about their western studios. Though this one was just the most "how can we waste time" I've seen from them.

I can't be too hard on the publishers when they're probably still scrambling to get things out the door with COVID, so I wasn't going into this event with super high expectations anyway, but it's been pretty boring so far.

  20. I always had an Idea for a potential Unleashed 2: Sonic gets taken over by Dark Gaia energy after finding it in a dark cave. Chip, now in ghost form, warns sonic that the world is starting to become corrupted by Dark Gaia again. But instead of all of the people being corrupted, the Kings/Presidents of each country were, causing those countries to be in danger. Sonic and Chip must travel across the world and stop each King from taking over the countries. don't worry, it wouldn't be as dark as it sounds.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i don't think it quite works. it wouldn't really make much sense for the gaias to be active again within sonic's lifetime, they're only awake for their whole destruction/creation thing. also dark gaia's not really consciously evil, just a destructive force, so even if it was around i don't know why it'd only affect the leaders of various countries.

    2. iambitter21

      iambitter21

I guess that's true, it was just an Idea I had in my head.

    3. Teoskaven

      Teoskaven

Whatever the stage set for an Unleashed 2, i just want to see what's the prospective of the other nations, cities and Sonic's friends. I still can't believe stuff like Angel Island being unaffacted by the world destruction or G.U.N. completely absent from the picture.
