Do you guys think this topic deserves its own thread? I find this discussion about character design and market competitive edge in sonic fascinating and very engaging, but it isn’t really following this thread’s title anymore lol

You can say that all you like, but sadly it legitimately is not that easy. Penders set a precedent to Sega of Japan with his antics, and he has left a mark on the Sega brand whether we like it or not. Many of the mandates are made in direct response to Penders’ lawsuit and the characters he wanted to keep. The no family members mandate, the no alternate outfits mandate, the no crying sonic mandate, etc. They are rightfully nervous and mistrusting of the writers for the american sonic comics specifically because of the years long legal battles Archie and Sega were forced to undergo.
Basically, it is easier said than done because of this situation. It is not fair, and Sega SHOULD put more trust in the IDW creative team’s writing chops and characterization. But I honestly cannot blame them for being cautious about this, if I had a property that I loved, and someone from another country that doesn’t speak my language decides to work under me, create fan characters, and then sue for the rights to their fan characters, then demand royalties and mandatory consultation whenever I needed to use those fan characters? That’s only the basics of what Penders was demanding, and I still would find myself becoming more guarded and cautious about my property if i were in those shoes.
It sucks and I hate it, but like. You can’t just undo that kind of impact yknow?

I can readily admit that Sonic Chronicles’ story elements are very unoriginal especially for Bioware specifically. This game was in development at the same time as Mass Effect 1, and that game has its fingerprints all over the back half of Chronicles. The first half being SATAM flavored alongside the Echidna Lore from Penders’ comic run is just as derivative, but unfortunately it wasn’t taking inspiration from an in-house project so it opened up the floodgates for penders to see it as plagiarism when it really is just an homage.

calamityCons reacted to Tornado in How would you say that people of your generation perceive the Sonic franchise?
"Nerd culture," which includes people like Game Grumps and the various "saying things louder makes you sound smarter" YouTube celebrities, has primarily spent most of their time focusing on 3 games in 3 year window of a 30 year franchise with dozens and dozens of games. STH '06 being one of the worst games ever released doesn't mean much to someone in their late-teens or younger whose first Sonic game was probably Generations or Lost World if any; just like the similarly infamous shitty Zelda CD-i games stopped really meaning anything tangible to anyone born after 1990 or so or E.T. to anyone born after 1980. It's something that was specifically damaging to the "generation" of people who entered the franchise with Adventure 2 Battle or Heroes (ones who'd be in their 20s now); which is the same age demographic that that sort of YouTube stuff is targeted at anyway. It causes a feedback loop.

The main issue regarding franchise perception at this point is probably that people that are the equivalent age now to those who were young during the Genesis era or the Gamecube era may not have played any Sonic games at all, since the franchise has been quieter than ever in the past 8 years and most of the games that were released were exclusive to failed console; so if they have any opinion at all the only thing they have to go on is secondhand unless they watched Boom or the movie or something.

If Team Dark “never has been friends or worked for GUN,” that sounds a lot like an outright retcon. It completely deletes all previous examples of the characters together. It’s outright removal of continuity and that makes me sad.

If it's a "brand", they're gonna keep using them together regardless of whatever shit they make up about Shadow that isn't even reflected in their own products so this really doesn't matter lol

My unpopular opinion is that Shadow the Hedgehog is a good game with a compelling story and unique progression system that I find very immersive and powerful.

If I were a writer for SEGA and I were incapable of portraying Shadow as anything more than a paper-thing jerkass idiot? I’d rather keep him in the background than wrestle with the license holders so that I could portray him as a rounded character.

I love to read Sonic content made by fans in fanfiction or “what if” theory videos. I’d be all for official literature like that! Or at least, I’d be happy to see them do things in Sonic’s world that could expand upon or explain inconsistencies. An encyclopedia-style Sonic Game Canon Overview would be very helpful.

I definitely agree on Eggman valuing his own ego over sadism itself. There have been many times when he gets mad at things for being indiscriminately destructive yet his rampant pollution of the world through making his Eggman Empire/Eggmanland/Personal Theme Park causes just as much long term damage as, say, Dark Gaia or the Black Arms Invasion.

Penders has repeatedly claimed that that was, in fact, what he was after... unfortunately though that's not really the case. In addition to royalties Penders wanted to retain ownership of his characters, and the problem with THAT is that Archie could only publish Sonic so long as everything they made for the book was owned by SEGA. Penders retaining ownership of his characters would essentially make him a secondary licensor on the book, in violation of Archie's contract. And that's without getting into the fact he wanted control over decisions made about characters such as Julie-Su and Locke... or the fact he attempted, in lieu of money, tried to get his Knuckles' movie made instead...
Point of order- despite how Penders tries to play it, his demands were never, ever reasonable.
And yeah... all that grief that happened with Archie has pretty much officially happened for nothing, because it's pretty clear at this point that Penders is never going to deliver on any of his grandiose promises.
