Any particular reason if you don't mind me asking?

It's all become very circular; there just isn't much to talk about that hasn't already been said during this dry spell.

I'm also just really exhausted by my relationship with this franchise and the fandom at large. I honestly despise what Sonic is now and has been for 15 years. The brand has done everything it can to tell me that I was wrong to love the things I did, and there's little evidence to expect any changes that would bring me back around. If I can't change it, then there's no point in investing so much thought and energy into it. The friction has become increasingly unhealthy.

If a new game appeals to me, I'll be happy to discuss it with folks. But until then, I think it's best I just try to forget about Sonic.

I'm kinda in the same place, I did leave Sonic discussion for a couple years, and to be frank it did help me, so if you feel burnt out, take a break.

I guess the franchise is not really targeted at the people who grew up with it, despite its blatant and superficial reminders of the past.

I have a losing streak with the stuff I'm fan of: most of them are either lately keeping a steady decline I despise,is on hiatus or practically doesn't exist as a franchise anymore: Ultima Underworld, Thief, Elder scrolls,System Shock, Fallout, Metroid, Megaman, Arcanum, Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines, HunterxHunter...

Sonic is the only one I've not thrown to the iggy bin and move on, because of Mania and fangames. For me seems that only worth it to follow up the fangame scene.

Yeah, I haven't been checking this forum much since Sonic hasn't given us much material to work with right now other than laughing at Ken Penders. So I totally get you.

I don't know what the source of the audio is, but I was really hoping that it would be a mish-mash of Ryan Drummond's lines instead of whatever it actually was.

      The Master

@Blue Blood thats Zero from the Megaman X games, kind of a meme cause it was poorly dubbed.

  5. Just reached the timeskip in Nier and I really think this will be my GOTY. Crazy to think I always chalked it up to some weird attempt by Japan to ape God of War back on 360.

    I'm so happy this exists.

  6. Holy shit, this game.

  7. This unrelenting schism of "Classic" vs "Modern" that looms over every discussion of Sonic is so exhausting. The tribalism and constantly tearing the other down, the absolute inability to recognize we're all starving and to ask for better instead of "my corner, my piece, my formula, 3D is a lost cause, Classic is a crutch, fuck the other guy."

    Come on

    1. Speedi

      Speedi

A good game transcends all those preferences. I'm sure there were a ton of people who bought Mania and enjoyed it that still prefer the Adventure artstyle.

But at the same time it's partially Sonic Team's fault for encouraging these kinds of discussions to exist with their inconsistent track record and nostalgia pandering.

    2. Cosmos Rogue

      Cosmos Rogue

It wasn't the nostalgia "pandering" that caused these disagreements. Sonic fans have been at odds over the direction of the franchise and what exactly a Sonic game is supposed to be like since at least Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Team created these divisions with the design decisions they made when making the early 3D games, and they've never stopped finding ways to add more schisms to the fanbase since then.

Fan discourse was dumb, but it was hard to care about it until it felt like it started influencing the end product. From 2010 onwards the series has felt insular and reactionary while the industry around it kept blazing trails and propping up proactive visionaries with new technology. There are too many old school franchises that came back as industry leaders in the past 4-5 years for me to name, and they did it by being willing to alienate their fanbase a bit in pursuit of something greater.

Sonic, meanwhile, got far too concerned with placating it's narrow minded fanbase.  All the changes they made only served to make the series feel stilted and dated by comparison. This was something a lot of people predicted would happen in 2012 when they pivot toward classic really started to ramp up, but it was depressing to watch all of it slowly come to pass. I remember someone predicting Sonic Mania's eventual existence and reception down to the letter in 2013. We're thankful for it now, obviously, but the idea of it was a point of derision then when AAA Sonic games were still taken for granted. Much as I love that game, I never wanted Sonic's story to end where it started.

I'd really like a Sonic game that's not influenced by any of this baggage at this point.  The only reason I'm curious about the next game at all is because they've seemingly given the Classic stuff it's own playpen where it cant hurt anything else. Not ideal, but a better use of an alt timeline than something like Boom. At least there's an audience for this sort of thing.

But the nostalgia wank was really just one problem with the new games. It's absolutely worth addressing, but it's only a start. They can't just move onto copying Sonic Adventure now. They need a new perspective.

  11. Glad to be done with Final Fantasy XV. Seems to have given up on itself in terms of structure and narrative in a sprint to wrap things up and it completely lost me. Such a bummer, it's a treasure trove of excellent ideas not one of which are fully realized.

But maybe I should cut it some slack for having made it out at all. Still, though, there's a much better game deep inside.

  12. If 3&K are so legally fraught, how were the 2009 Backbone emulations on 360 and PS3 possible? Further, SEGA gave Microsoft the green light on making these versions backwards compatible on modern Xboxes.

    Can someone explain?

    1. Thigolf

      Thigolf

Sonic 3 and Knuckles wasn't off limits until after like, the DS Classics Collection. Chances are something happened around that time that either changed the legal situation or just made Sega not wanting to risk further re-releases.

As for backwards compatibility, they are technically still selling the same product that was made available for the 360 over a decade ago, so that might be a legal loophole. It should also be noted that you can only buy it through the 360 store or the Xbox marketplace website where I'm pretty sure you need a 360 account connected to it for the purchase to work, you can't buy the game on either One or Series X/S.

That being said, I have no legal knowledge, I'm just guessing/assuming, so take it with a grain of salt.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Sirroco and some of the other parties involved specifically cite the Steam release when talking about their unpaid royalties. Whatever the situation is, it didn't become an issue or at least it wasn't legally challenged until around the time of the Steam and DS Classic Collection releases. I've heard the same argument that Thigolf is putting forwards existing releases being fine, but new releases being more difficult.

May be digging a bit deep there. Even if I don't like the guy much.

  14. How were we to read the insta-shield in Sonic 3&K? Was it an extension of Sonic's body? Was it energy, a kind of prototypical form of chaos control?

    What was going on there?

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I've always sort of took it as, for a brief moment, Sonic would go out of the ball and halt/ deflect any attack/ damage coming to him. Think like a counter in a fighting game only so quick that we don't see it.

There's probably a better explanation for it but that sorta dips back into the Shonen traits I often gravitate more towards in this series.

    4. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

@azoo That's how I've always interpreted it. It doesn't make much sense, but it doesn't have to. Heck I find it easier to believe that Sonic can spin faster for a brief moment and then slow down again than that Tails can literally rotate his tails like helicopter blades to fly or that Knuckles can glide by lying down in mid-air.

  15. When are we gonna talk about this series' refusal to advance its aesthetic?

    1. Speedi

      Speedi

I would be down for some minor tweaks, better in game cutscene animation (like smaller appendages n heads) and redesigns. But I don't think the series is in any particularly drastic need for an overhaul or something along those lines.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Not sure quite what your mean. But the series' aesthetic is stale as fuck. The models are outdated and poorly animated in game, and the 3D key art of the characters looks stiff and ugly the majority of the time. The series could definitely use a freshening up in the art department. Unleashed was very, very welcome when it first came around, whilst Lost World and Forces felt incredibly half-arsed or misguided. The series looks cookie cutter and bland now. I want to see SEGA take a very considered approach to the artstyle and visuals of the next game. Not asking for redesigns as I don't think that that's strictly necessary. But they need to put some serious thought into the visuals and try something new.

    3. HPX

      HPX

This series really needs to do some introspection and get back in touch with its defining elements. This goes for mechanics as well as narrative, but in this case I'm just venting my frustration with how positively ugly these characters have been for so long now.

It's such a disappointment knowing how dynamic and charming Sonic's aesthetic used to be. There's just no personality or vibe anymore. Unless we want to call 'abrasive' a vibe.

Might be worth making a topic about if you feel strongly about it.  A lot of people feel the same way you do.

  16. I think the best solution SEGA could offer in terms of an olive branch to the fractured fanbase would be to include a robust level editor in a future game with options for visual novel-type story-telling and letting players share their games/stories.

It could address the longevity issue the games have had for the past decade, and give fans a creative outlet for their headcanons since SEGA haven't had the spine to make definitive calls on canon. It also gives SEGA an out to not ever have to make Sonic Adventure 3, since everyone can just make their own.

  17. People use "looks like a PS2" game as an insult, but Kingdom Hearts' animation department flexed so hard that there are games released today that do not look as good.

Looking like a "PS2/N64" game is an insult to PS2 and N64 games. People oughta specify that they're refering to bad PS2/N64 games.

  18. The town music for Altissia in FFXV is so utterly wretched I turned it off and my first instinct was to put on the Venice themes from Assassin's Creed II. I have never had to do something like this with a game before.

  19. Chris aside, I think Sonic X is otherwise a perfect model for Sonic in terms of tone and world. It's exciting and always with a wonderful sense of humor; the show is aware of how absurd the premise is, but is mature enough to run with it instead of constantly breaking the fourth wall and begging us to laugh.

It's also not afraid to get real; it's pretty upfront about how anti-authoritarian it is. There are war crimes, homeless people, people with disabilities, etc. It's a relatable world and it's interesting and fun to see the interplay between Sonic & co. with humanity. Makes me wish characters like Topaz or even Sam Speed made their way into the games.

I have a blast watching this show. And no, not the 4Kids version.

I always remember the episode with Helen because it showed Sonic's kind-hearted side that we rarely get to see otherwise, other than in Black Knight.

  20. So I've finally gotten around to playing Final Fantasy XV. I've been wanting to see how turned out after an infamously lengthy development and so far, 30-ish hours in, I quite like it.

What I want to know is, with the composer credited as Yoko Fucking Shimomura, why is the music so bad?? It's like fake music, music you'd hear in an elevator or a hotel resort commercial IN A MOVIE because not even a real hotel resort would put music this terrible in their commercial! The battle themes are great and the main theme is beautiful, but the rest??

Is she credited as the composer for work she did during the Versus XIII days? And someone else filled in the rest closer to release? What the hell happened? Does anyone know?

      Crow the BOOLET

I don't know man. I never put her on a high bar in the first place mostly because I know her work from KH and that's either just arranges from Disney songs or really repetitive original songs that only have a 10 second loop.

I'm not a music expert so I'm not a good critic on these things but that's honestly a red flag for me.

    2. HPX

      HPX

I think you're selling her KH work way too short, but no point going in circles over musical taste. My primary personal experience with her work stems from the Mario & Luigi RPGs which always had bangers pretty exclusively. She's got range for sure.

Which just baffles me as to how FFXV ended up sounding the way it often does. Maybe the memos she got literally just called for music like that and she was just doing her job. But damn...

    3. Azure Blue Tori

      Azure Blue Tori

Gotta second the catchiness of the Mario & Luigi soundtrack.

    4. Jovahexeon Jax Joranvexeon

      Jovahexeon Jax Joranvexeon

As a musical expert, I have to say that Yoko Shimomura has it and then some. To try and chalk her KH soundtrack up to just Disney renditions is.....kind of asinine to say the least. The majority of the music in that game is quite original actually. And even when she does arrangements of pre-exisitng tunes, she puts such a spin on them that they shine on their own.

And that's not even getting into the brilliance of her Mario & Luigi titles, Dream Team and Inside Story being chief amongst them.

No irony here. Sonic's had quite enough of it. These Colors remaster rumors just have me thinking.

I get that normies think it saved the franchise, and anytime a game is unshackled from console exclusivity is a win for everyone. I'm still waiting for JSRF to be freed from Xbox.

...But god damn this is the absolute last thing I wanted from this series.

  23. Forgive me for being old, but can anyone tell me how Discord works? I want to talk to people, but whenever I search for a server, it just seems like utter chaos that I can't imagine having a conversation in.

    1. Cuz

      Cuz

Never had any luck with the search functions, I just find links to the communities I'm apart of or interested in through twitter, youtube and the like and treat it like the IRC chatrooms of old.

I'll keep an eye out for links. Thanks for the reply.

    3. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

That's sort of what Discord is in that use case. If you're just looking for a random server, you're basically joining a live chat room of sorts (especially if they're popular). It helps to find smaller, more dedicated communities where conversations can actually happen (at least from my limited experience).

That being said though, outside of the SSMB one I don't really have a good example here.

    4. Zaysho

      Zaysho

Most of the time I just use Discord servers besides my friends' server for zine work when I get it. A couple others I joined were typically connected to communities that were linked to Twitch of artists or people I follow but even then I'm not good at being active in them personally.

  24. I just started Spark The Electric Jester 2 yesterday and oh my god. As soon as it gave me control, it felt like coming home.

I IMPLORE any Adventure fans on Xbox to buy it. Not only that, I encourage you to go out of your way to rate and review the game because it's severely lacking any feedback at all on the Xbox store. It doesn't even have enough data to render an average star rating. One dude made this game and it deserves so much more love.

I already have it and the first one. I finished the first, but I haven’t even started the second one, cuz I figured it played better with a controller, but I’m on the way of changing that with my new gaming PC.

I liked how the first one was basically Kirby meets Sonic, and it was a fun play to abuse some of the abilities against the bosses.

I think the only negative I have against it is the level design near the end of the game, as it throws so much overkill that if it weren’t for the health system I’d have been raging at my computer. Was a rough play, but I loved it enough to keep exploring the other abilities.

They also deal with a small number of environments due to the nature of the genre. I think we're a ways off on seeing something like that on a larger scale but I'd like to be wrong
