R.C. reacted to Blue Blood in So what's canon, Encore Mode and/or Mania Adventure
Encore Mode is probably the technically the 'most canon' as it's the game, but it's clearly just a bonus story and doesn't really have much new or interesting to offer. Plus it has the Phantom Ruby make a return, which we should kind of believe was destroyed in Forces, I think? It doesn't make sense. But then Mania Adventures has the oddities with the Chaos Emeralds... Despite the Emeralds scattering at the end of Egg Reverie, their whereabouts are strange in Adventures with Sonic already having the green one at the start.
I guess it doesn't matter. They can't both happen, but as they both end with Sonic winning and Eggman getting blasted off to God knows where... Meh. Either works as well as the other so long as you remember that they are mutually exclusive. I'll take Adventures because of the character interactions rather than a retread of Mania.
Also because I want to live in a world where this scene is canon:

No joke though, I wouldn’t mind seeing Speed Highway return. That stage just screams racing track.(Though so would Twinkle Park...)

Definitely the Unleashed stage with the least character, but I guess at least it's not another Generations/Forces level.
R.C. reacted to Dr. Detective Mike in Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game
Hey guys, I think I may have stumbled upon something that may actually explain why some of our grievances with this game exist as well as why it's not structured like the other All-Stars Racing games. Now, I'm only assuming none of you saw this since I haven't seen anyone talking about it but I found a video interview with Lead Designer of this game, Richard Acheriki that was done on NintendoWorldReport.com. There's a part in the interview where he says that not only is he new to Sumo and hasn't worked on the past titles but the same is true for most of the team working on this game. They have contact with the people who worked on the previous titles for reference sake but the majority of their team is new.
The point where he says this is at 4:57 in the video.
Again, I don't know if this is old news to you all or not. I haven't seen or heard this interview before now and I saw a lot of people wondering why things were so different, often stating that they speculated it was because it was just low-budget or interference from Sonic Team/SEGA. That might still be the case, but I feel this might have something to do with it as well.
R.C. reacted to Blue Blood in Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game
I feel like it's worth mentioning that the idea of "slots" is bullcrap. I know you acknowledged this, but way back at the time Steve Lycett of Sumo said that because the scale of ASRT was so much greater than ASR and even SST that having clone characters was the only way to increase the roster size. If there was no Gum, Pudding or MeeMee then there wouldn't have been alternatives. He also went as far as to say that Billy Hatcher was absent because they couldn't make vehicle designs for him that they were satisfied with. Danica Patrick was only added to the game as part of a sponsorship deal, which likely helped a bit with the budget ala SOAP in SA2 (although we don't know the actual extent of either deal). I'm not going to say that losing all the various franchise reps was a good thing, and not even Sonic survived the cull entirely with Big getting cut, but it was a necessity. They needed to use characters who could share skeletons and animations.
Also NiGHTS and Reala being their own vehicles was most sensible thing considering its actually a major part of series. It's the same reason that OpaOpa didn't have a vehicle in ASR.
R.C. reacted to Strickerx5 in Team Sonic Racing - Reveal Trailer
Well... this is what they should've shown off back at SXSW. Not having any gameplay this far into the game's announcement cycle is absolutely annoying at this point. Glad E3 is in a couple of weeks or else I'd really be turned off.
Anyways, glad to see them confirm a Steam release.

So let me get this straight...
Planet Wisp is a beautiful, lush, pure planet filled with nature untouched by men.
Then the evil Dr. Eggman comes, enslaves the Wisps and starts constructing his own themepark, destroying the beautiful envirement.
Sonic stops Eggman and kicks him out, saving planet Wisp.
And then someone builds a speedway there.
Presumingly, it requires racers and spectators.
Which require a spaceport, hotel, restaurants, tourist attractions.
In other words, planet Wisp turns into a bloated polluting themepark regardless.
Joking aside, looks fantastic.
Little worried about how this team aspect will play out, tough...

I just noticed that the Walmart description mentions car customization. So, I guess you might be able to get Sonic in a red car! \o/
Do they need to be balanced? I imagine the differences will be similar to the weight classes in Mario Kart, so nothing much. Nothing will be gated like in Heroes.
To be fair, it's not like previous Sumo SEGA racers had particularly iconic weapons. Remember Bee©? Or Baseball Mitt©?
I'd say Wisps are a decent step up.

15 characters? That's pitiful. The previous ASR games both had over 30. Mario Kart 8 DX has over 40... Heck, even all of the Riders games offered more. Like, what on Earth is the reason for such a puny amount? Everything else looks and sounds decent at least, but that stingy roster makes no sense. I was expecting 20 characters on the low end but SEGA couldn't even cough that up. Keep aiming high, fellas. I want to believe 15 is just the starting roster and more are to be unlocked, plus there's always DLC, but I cannot hold high expectations seeing the $40 price tag again after what a low content chump of a game Forces was. Ah well, if I get Blaze I'll probably manage to enjoy it. The modes and graphics look and sound solid so far.

While I've had a mixed relationship with Wisps in the Sonic series over the years, now that they HAVE been codified as very much a here-to-stay element of the franchise, Wisps as items for a racer feels VERY right and honestly will give the combat a much better identity compared to the cliché generic cartoon items from the All-Stars games.
But this seems nice, and thank heavens that they're using Planet Wisp as the flagship environment rather than Green, Seaside or Windy Hill. Shame it got leaked instead of being revealed in the teased teaser as intended, I think now the teaser has more to live up to since we're going to want to see locales other than Planet Wisp for sure - so I hope it's a proper trailer.
Not sure how I feel about Egg Pawn taking up one of those precious 15 character slots, but perhaps that number doesn't include unlockables, we'll see. The Chao in Space 3D poster is nice - hopefully the fanservice will be as thick and heavy as it was in Mania here.

Leaked box art from Walmart's Data base. Whoops.
Not too many details yet..but it's there. Glad to see Planet Wisp is a track. Visually it looks a bit bland though.
I'll keep the op updated as more info rolls in.

Just discovered that Sonic 2's All Emerald cheat has been put back in for 1.04. As a bonus, the playstyle of ERZ can be played in regular stages now. This does not work on any previous version of Mania.
R.C. reacted to TheOcelot in Sonic Mania: Version 1.04 and Plus DLC PS4 Leaks (SPOILERS)
I discovered something totally unexpected in the 1.04 version of Mania this morning. Whilst I was checking to see whether you could now play any special stage using sound-test in level-select, I also discovered that Sonic Mania Plus will feature SEVEN BRAND-NEW "CATCH THE UFO" SPECIAL STAGES!!!
I played sound-test "07" in level select out of curiosity to see if there was an unused 8th special stage (which there isn't as far as I'm aware) and ended up in a special stage with a new layout but with the (black) background of the original 7th special stage....
All new special stages have completely new lay-outs.
The first (and so called) easiest special stage has the background of the original seventh special stage. The second special stage has the background of the original sixth special stage. The third new ss has the background of the original fifth ss. You get the idea........and the seventh (and final) new ss has the background of the very first special stage.
You can play the new special stages via level select by inputting "07", "08", "09", "0A", "0B", "0C" and "0D" respectively
When I briefly played these this morning they seemed a bit intimidating, but I got a chance to play them again this evening. I got used to them and I've managed to beat all seven new special stages! I've recorded my playthrough.
When I played the new special stages I beat the 1st, 3rd and 4th at first attempt, but I needed quite a few attempts to beat the others.
In the video I play the first new special stage. I skipped the second special stage because it was giving me trouble. I then beat the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh special stages. I then went back and beat the second special stage.
I think we can safely assume the seven new special stages will be playable in Mania Plus Encore mode.
I have no idea what the reward will be for beating all seven new special stages. Maybe Hyper forms???
