  1. I finally got around to playing Generations on PC and goodness, 60 FPS is a game changer. That's to be expected, I suppose, but WOW.

Now to grab the Unleashed Project so I won't have to endure Unleashed's spotty-ass performance :P

  2. I just taught someone how 2D Sonic works I'm very proud.

I'm always proud of my exorbitantly long game design musings, though.

  3. Freedom Planet's bosses feel super hit and miss . Some compliment the mechanics very well, while others require movement and timing too precise for what the mechanics of the game allow.

They're honestly the biggest sour spot of the game for me (besides the narrative, which is a whole other can of worms).

    1. Tara

I'm convinced that Lord Brevon is literally impossible to defeat as Carol on higher difficulty settings.  Had to tone it down because I couldn't last even five seconds.

    2. Maxtiis

God, don't even remind me of the three part fight with Lord Brevon. That fight can seriously go fuck itself.

And I think part of the problem with Freedom Planet's bosses is that most of them can spend a majority of the fight off-screen which makes it difficult to read what they're going to do and considering the speed of which they can attack, makes it feel like it wasn't the players fault they got hit.

  4. Grabbed Freedom Planet today. It's pretty darn fun!

The story on the other hand is... not. The character interactions between the main characters are generally enjoyable, but there isn't much depth there, and everything else is just kinda... there.

    I shall press on, however.

    1. Tara

The narrative pacing leaves a lot to be desired, but I find the  characters to all be really enjoyable.

I more or less agree with that. A really appreciate the team's efforts, I just wish the outcome of those efforts was more compelling and well constructed.

    3. Conando

I suppose the bright side there is there's an ability to just do away with all the pesky cutscenes.

    4. Tara

I think the main thing is the medium they're working with doesn't work for incredibly intricate stories.  I feel like it should have been relatively simple, being a sidescroller in the vein of the 16-bit era.  Relatively, being the keyword.  Compare to Shovel Knight, and there's a lot of cutscenes, but they never overstay their welcome.

  5. First real day on the job, and my boss is late.

I'm sure enough layers of fabric will cover the empty hole where her heart used to be. =V

  7. With how much Lost World wears it's inspiration on its sleeve, it's hard not to say that it just feels like one of those knock-off products that both fails to capture what made its inspiration great, but also fails to capital on the things that make it unique.

Because that's basically what it's feeling like right now :/

  8. So, I just got Lost World today. I'm about an hour into it and I'm already questioning my purchase lol

    1. Ferno

could be worse. because that sounds like me with the 3DS version after the first 3 levels

It only goes downhill, I'm afraid. And the console version is the better version.

    4. Toa Axis

      Toa Axis

Well, that doesn't bode well. The 3DS version being even worse is a terrifying prospect.

@Metal Sonic NEGA I'm playing on Wii U.

    5. NegaMetallix

Well, at least you have the DLC levels, I guess.

  9. I could have been playing Persona 5 today.

    But nooooo

On that note, Happy Valentine's Day folks :)

  10. Playing through Dishonored 2 and it genuinely has some of the best art and level design I've seen in any game ever.

  11. This is a really good video about how people typically view game reviews nowadays, and I wanted to share it. It's short but hits the nail on the head IMO, and I believe folks should give it a look.

  12. I'm struggling to get through the second Little Witch Academia OVA.

I'm just not that engaged :/

    1. Celestia

Assuming you plan on watching the series, you can skip right to that if you want. It's a different continuity so the OVAs aren't required viewing.

    2. Toa Axis

      Toa Axis

Oh, that's good. I loved the first OVA, but this one is just a slog to me.

  13. Discord is so much better than Skype ,it's actually hilarious.

    1. Kiah

Absolutely. I wish I started using it much sooner than I did. Just wish Discord had a quoting function though.

That would be very nice. Thankfully they're very receptive to feedback.

  14. The DMV is the worst.

    Zootopia was right.

I was at the DMV for like... an hour and fifteen minutes

Was 'aight for me sorry zootopia

      This is transcendent.

  17. So, the Switch takes three hours to charge.

    T H R E E H O U R S

This just keeps getting better and better...

      Toa Axis

      Batter isn't removable either.

    2. Ferno

      >non removable battery

well people were telling nintendo to get with the times hahahahaahahahahaha

    3. Forte-Metallix

I could make 1/24th of a bowl of potato salad in that time!

    4. AxelPrime

Unless the battery is Nintendo exclusive, maybe you can try to gut it out like with the 3DS.

But still that is a huge deal breaker on the handheld aspect.

    5. Toa Axis

      Toa Axis

It's amazing how they're messing this up on, like, every conceivable level.

You're kidding me, the pizzas I would arrive before my Switch fully charges.

    7. LovieHats

I thought it was three to six

    8. Ferno

more and more I'm starting to think the Switch was like a panic-induced mid-season replacement console as they probably dropped big chunks of their Wii U support during the 3rd or 4th year of it's life to start Switch development while everyone was distracted by Smash Bros 4 hype. granted it looks like Nintendo's thrown a ton of effort into it all, but still

    9. CottonCandy

      Three hours to recharge a non-removable battery...Ouch..

    10. PaulyBFromDa303

Can't really say much about the Switch since I haven't gotten one yet. You know, budgets and all. But I don't see what the big deal is. 3 hours? The GBA SP charged in about that time. Besides, it charges while it's still on doesn't it? . . . . . Does it? Cause that would be a bit odd. Point is it still sounds worth it

    11. Celestia

This is kind of a non-issue for me because I'll be too paranoid to take this thing outside the house, lol. A Gameboy / DS is fine, but due to all the different parts and stuff I'd be a lot more wary about taking the Switch + it's controllers anywhere.

    12. Toa Axis

      Toa Axis

@PaulyBFromDa303The GBA SP had a much smaller battery, and did not have the luxury of today's charging technology.

    13. PaulyBFromDa303

      That's a good point. I AM talking a little old-school XD

  18. Looking at all the Switch info...

    Oh dear.

  19. In the process of making salmon cakes, and suffice to say, I did not expect there to be bones an vertebrae within the can.

  21. Merry Christmas, do-gooders, evil-doers, and everything in between.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

  22. To this day, I can't believe Sega never released DLC stages for Generations.

Money left on the table, that was.

    1. TheOcelot

Yeah, the Casino Night pinball table was lame.

    2. Tails spin

      Tails spin

    4. TheOcelot

Uh oh. His secret is out!

      Oops, wrong status. Sorry.

    5. Bowbowis

I know. I would have loved to see what they could do with the likes of Twinkle Park, Metal Harbor, Mystic Mansion, Sky Troops, White Acropolis, or something from the Storybooks like Great Megalith.

    6. Lord-Dreamerz

from the looks of it... It's called Sonic Project 2017. ;P

  23. I find it so odd how some people can think that just because a game has more realistic visuals, the developers are "less creative," or that less thought and care was put into how it's presented.

Like, you're undermining the work that these guys put in to a ludicrous degree.

    1. Blacklightning

Being technically impressive and uninspired aren't exactly mutually exclusive - visuals can still be boring even despite the power or amount of work put into them.

That being said, sometimes a lack of visual flourish, for lack of a better word, can actually be totally appropriate for the game in question, so I wouldn't say it's a rule of thumb. I honestly can't imagine a game like Resident Evil 4 without a dull, muddy pallete, or a game in the Thief series without shades of black, for example.

    2. Lord-Dreamerz

It depends on the game. Some games are meant to have a realistic world, while others it absolutely does not suit them which can lead some viewers to see it as bad design at that point if the devs tossed realistic visuals in.

This may trigger some Sonic fans but I personally feel the devs were not being very creative when they did the semi-realistic world art style in Sonic 06 and even Sonic Unleashed. In my opinion they were just wanted to look next gen for that quick "wow it looks next gen" gimmick and did a cliche Hollywood cartoon CGI movie design. Regardless of the level of effort they put into it I don't feel it's half as creative as other styles they can do.

      Toa Axis

Oh, I agree. I suppose I should have been a bit more specific in my example.

I guess what I'm really frustrated at is the reductiveness that you sometimes see. For example, I saw someone call Horizon Zero Dawn's art direction as, "What Naughty Dog does but with some color filters thrown in."

And I get it, some people don't find more realistic visuals that appealing, I totally respect that. But that same logic can be applied to, well, anything. It's like me saying, "Valkyria Chronicles is just an anime game with some watercolor filters thrown in." I may think the style is unremarkable, sure, but I wouldn't justify that with some reductionist rhetoric. Hell, even though Battleborn is a very stylized game, I don't think it's art is anything that great. But I'm not gonna say that, "Gearbox just copied X with X twist applied to it," because that's short selling the work that the developers have done, even if I don't particularly like it.

My problem isn't necessarily someone calling visuals boring, but being overly presumptuous as to why that is (in regards to short selling a developer's work). Hope that makes sense.

      @Lord-Dreamerz That's a good example, and I agree wholeheartedly.

  24. As of 2016 couldn't get any worse, the creator of General Tso's chicken died.

    True legend in my book.

    1. Person

      I would've thought he'd died long ago.

Well, he created one of the best chickens ever, so kudos to him.
