And instead, they make it the opposite problem: it looks like it can break from someone touching it.

Actually started watching that show (the 2003 version) a month ago on Netflix. I’d say I really like what I’ve watched so far.

  11. Hey, I'm learning little tidbits too. My Japanese is very basic and elementary level, and I only really know how to speak politely. While I know casual form when I see it, I struggle understanding it as I'm still very new to speaking casual Japanese. There's a shop in my country that sells the book, as I'm sure I said a few pages back, but it's ridiculously expensive. I'd have to find another way.
  12. Almost a direct translation, so yes, it’s just that simple that it would take up too little space. Even though it’s a pretty direct translation, it’s a little weird to translate back without turning it exactly into the original dialogue. Only thing is that Sonic doesn’t mention anything about "on a serious note" in the translation.

Inb4 we get a roll-back to the old site by the end of the year with enough pushback... assuming they didn't somehow delete all the code or whatever that made up the essence of the old site and there's no going back

  14. Welp, one of my friends makes racist and anti-semitic jokes. It’s obviously shock humour, and I shamefully have to admit I laughed because I wasn’t prepared for something so horrible. We all agreed it was bad, though.

    Late night Jackbox is stupid.

  15. There we are, revisited and beat Portal 2 again. Fantastic game, clever writing, absolutely haunting atmosphere.

...i beat it in four hours, because i knew most of the solutions to the puzzles, lol. even those i forgot, i figured out quickly. i can see why i'm a "dangerous, mute lunatic"

  16. fuck it, time to revisit portal 2

  17. I just realised something about Evangelion, that Kaworu's one line ("In other words, I love you") actually links back to the end credits theme (Fly Me To The Moon). This is slightly changed in the Netflix version, that it no longer links back to the song. While the Netflix translation and re-dubbing may be more "accurate," it loses that thematic importance. I think it's a lesson in translating too literally.

and yes i know, netflix doesn't have that credits theme. but the song is still intact in japan's netflix, so it's still a valid take.

    1. Sean

      Sean

also because Kaworu is fucking gay

    2. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

we know that, and his whole character and that one scene is important to shinji's character arc

i don't like that the new translation, although more literal to the original script, lowers the impact of the line to the story by losing the meaning, among other issues

it's the difference between carrying the meaning of the original and using google translate

    3. Sean

      Sean

The people who are against the original line also sometimes argue against Kaworu being gay and I don't get that. Like... whether the writers intended him to be that or not, the fact of the matter is that fans have interpreted him as gay for years and it's only now that that's being contested. It's similar to the backlash Sakamoto got for writing Samus as a passive weak waifu which iirc was an attempt to "correct" people's perception of Samus as a hardened badass who don't need no man. Artist intent isn't everything.

  18. It's hard to explain why they're that cheap, because the size of the books don't change anything. Any kid in Japan can buy a manga volume on a small allowance, but us English speakers have to turn it into a hobby to keep up. I assume it's something to do with publishers factoring the licensing fees of the books into the cost, and probably works vice versa for IDW Sonic here. ...but that doesn't explain why French translations of a manga are nearly the same price as the original books >:U
  19. I know that. If monthly issues were $30, the comic would sink here. I was comparing to the price of the English volumes. It's almost funny, in a way. For manga, it costs more to get an English translation than to get the original Japanese volume (not that much more, mind you, but it's cheaper). For this, it costs more to get the Japanese translation than it does to get it in the original English.
  20. The thing is that the first kanji looks too off to be "celebrity". But at the same time, the kanji that it looks like it could be instead, is a kanji that doesn't exist. I was thrown off by the line as a result. It probably is "有名人", as it fits the context (and it's probably a simplified writing of the kanji), and I was simply reading too much into it. I'm also not well versed in slang, but I have a vague understanding, so thanks for the correction on "じゃない". For what it is, it works. She speaks in casual form, as most Sonic characters do, and has a very playful voice to her which stays faithful to her character. I look forward to picking this up to use as study material (and just for funsies). Unfortunately, as previously stated, it's sold out everywhere right now. My bookstore is sold out of stock too, and it's also crazy expensive there ($60 AUD?! That's double the English price!)
  21. It’s still the same standard font that other comics/manga use. What I’m more surprised by is seeing the sound effects untranslated, even though those are digitally added in so they can be swapped around for any language. Oh, and if you’re curious, the translation doesn’t differ much from English. The only notable thing is that Tangle uses a feminine form to refer to herself (あたし/Atashi is the feminine form of "I / Me"), as that’s expected of the language, but nothing different. Tangle: Welcome to my town! Sorry about the mess. There’s a little robot trouble. Sonic: Trouble? Where? Tangle: Haha! Such a gentleman. Nice! You’re used to this! Do you do this often? Sonic: Oh, sometimes. Sonic the Hedgehog. Tangle: Oh! Not a celebrity(?) (Couldn’t translate) Tangle the Lemur. Sonic: Honoured to meet you. Tangle: Likewise!

*throws tails and knuckles in the bin* Sonic Heroes 2 when

  24. Sonic Heroes controls like arse, the team mechanic is a little clunky in how it functions, and the voice clips can get incredibly annoying. However, the level design, the music, the art style and more make me really admire it. Heroes is a return to the Mega Drive days, while still pushing forward a new modern aesthetic. There's the whole Act 1 & 2 idea from Sonic 3, even if Heroes doesn't explicitly state it, and the level ideas are new twists on old formulas. The first level takes inspiration from the first levels of previous Sonic games, but creates something new out of them. A level that is both a bingo board and a pinball game is inspired, even if the controls work against it. And a jungle full of giant frogs and the level is developed in front of you? And a big ol' haunted mansion with all weird tricks like turning the level upside down? I could keep going on and on about all these creative ideas. While I might not enjoy the gameplay, everything else about the game felt like what I wanted to see from a Sonic game. The story is naff, though. I love Metal Sonic, but don't do him like this...
  25. I want to get into reading the old Spider-Man comics. And there's plenty of ways to, but they're difficult to get a hand on, and they REALLY aren't cheap. There's even a version of the series that's supposed to be cheaper to collect, as there's no colour and it's made on lower quality paper. That edition is still really expensive, if not more than other full-colour editions.

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

If you haven’t read the series before, I’d recommend getting Ultimate Spidey (the Peter run) on Marvel’s comic app. It’s the only Spidey series I’ve read beginning to end.

Plus, the app regularly has sales where the graphic novel releases are cheap (£2.99 here).

In general, Marvel’s comic app is the best place to simply read the series in general, due to the sales.

    2. Speederino

      Speederino

There's also Marvel Unlimited, a subscription service that lets you read most of their back catalog. It's probably the more expensive option, but they're all there.

I originally read them via a CD-Rom collection in the mid 00's that had the first 500 issues of Amazing. It was fucking neat, it even included all the original ads (Normally I'd hate that, but in this case it's like a time capsule) The big downside was that things would get confusing when you'd hit a massive storyline that was spread across multiple books (Maximum Carnage, Clone Sage, etc). And sadly it doesn't really work on modern computers that well, as it was made to run with a now ancient version of Adobe.

    3. Polkadi~☆

How about physical copies, which is my preferred way of reading? Those ones are expensive.
