  1. Some companies these days tend to forget the “local” part of localisation. It’s more or less a translation instead.

If you’re going to localise a script, write it in a while that it’s natural in the language and country you’re trying to localise it to. Use closely related concepts instead of calling it as it is. Use terms a character is more likely to say. And so on.

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

My friend takes the piss out of this with the English dub of MHA. He hates the English dub simply because of how ridiculous Deku sounds when he's saying things like Kacchan, or in his scared/sad/crying moments.

    2. SupahBerry

And what of those on the opposite end who take "local" too literally??

    3. Polkadi~♪

His scared moments, so be it, sounds fine to me. Things like “Kacchan” is a little more difficult to solve.

One thing that’s a huge shame to me is that no adaptation ever managed to add an honourifics running gag with Iida, where he refers to all of his classmates with “-kun”, even when Tsuyu Asui asks to be called “Tsuyu-chan”, resulting in “Tsuyu-chan-kun”. People have found ways of successfully adding that joke in a way that makes sense in English, but not all things were meant to be.

And you also have things like the Netflix redub of Neon Genesis Evangelion, where “I’m so fucked up” makes more sense for the character and for an English speaker (in the context of the line) than “I’m the lowest of the low.”

      eat your hamburgers, apollo

Okay, seriously, there IS a point where you can take it too far. Just adapt the thing as it is, in a way that English audiences can understand it without the specific cultural references.

    4. Ryannumber1gamer

I do think that localisation can go too far in the other way though. The Ace Attorney games are a prime example, since they tried to go with the game being set in America, despite the fact a lot of the mythic aspects and the court system in general is based on Japan's.

Persona 5 is another really strange one, because it's basically literally just acting like everything is in Japanese, with Ryuji making big deals out of Ann being able to speak English...despite speaking it perfectly himself.

    5. Polkadi~♪

God, the Hawaii trip especially. That took me out of the game in an instant to register the weird combination of words:

      WHOOAA, you speak Japanese?!

Said in English. In response to an English line. In a predominantly known English-speaking area. I knew what the line was about, but sheesh, there had to be some better way to do it.

    6. Ryannumber1gamer

Honestly, even some of the other things just sounds plain weird in English as well. Off the top of my head, there's the whole maid subplot, where even doing the daily life section, Joker is constantly referred to as Master, there's the fact that the game itself asks you to input your character name as a Japanese name, which can lead to some confusion, as well as the still common use of Kun, Chan and such. It gets really bad on the trip section, as you say.

What's annoying more is that quite a lot of the characters, including Ryuji himself speak in a very natural English voice. Like, Ryuji's punk attitude and voice, as well as way of speaking is very hard to imagine in Japanese because it sounds like such a punk English thing.

    7. Polkadi~♪

The honourifics were weird, especially when I had no concept on how any of that worked. If you’re making a game in English, it’s not hard to imagine that the game should have English concepts, right?

It’s all weird, because it should flow naturally according to the general belief of how the English language works. Same goes for all other dubs in any other language. Once you localise something, you’re no longer playing by the rules of the original language, lest you get too stiff and literal, or become difficult to understand to an English speaker with odd cultural references.

  2. Emerald Spears is Archie Mega Man. Don’t get too confused, it has nothing to do with Sonic.
  3. “I’m going to do the thing!”

“Hey, you should do the thing.”

    “no. fuck you.”

    1. Ryannumber1gamer

I got a better idea, why don't I call someone whose JOB it is to do the thing! You know why? Because *starts poking Polk's nose* when I need a JOB done, I get someone with a JOB to do the JOB.

any excuse to use a spongebob quote suits me

  4. Currently getting references from my figures and my favourite animations to get an idea of how to draw characters.

I love drawing cartoons, but I also really want to draw something more human.

  5. Sonic looks at his map confusedly. “Tangle said she wanted to show me something in her village, but...”

He looks up at the spiral mountain before him.

“This doesn’t look like Spiral Hill Village to me.”

    1. PaulyBFromDa303

My reaction is what I imagine Sonic's face looks like

Oh, so you really don’t know.

      Spiral Mountain from Banjo-Kazooie.

  6. I’m starting to panic, I’m starting to panic, but I don’t want to, I don’t need to, I JUST WANT IT TO STOP. This keeps happening...

Please ignore me, it’s nothing, I just needed to vent somewhere.

  7. Huh... A bookstore in my city has a book listed in their database with a page on their website, but it’s not being sold or is it in stock.

    Mega Man: Master Mix Vol.1

Information on this book is scarce, but it was meant to have issues #1-#12 of the Archie Comic series... 3 years ago, yet it’s still listed in some places. This book is a total mystery.

    1. PC the Hedgehog

      PC the Hedgehog

I remember that. I think it was delayed and delayed until all the Archie action books fizzled out.

      It's never coming.

    2. Polkadi~♪

As it would appear, yet several places strangely still list it.

The book really is a total mystery, swept under the rug. But I certainly wouldn’t mind owning a copy, if it ever would come out...

    3. Zaysho

Huh, I don't even remember Archie soliciting those, but it must have gotten canned when they killed the series.

I was thinking of the colorized edition of the manga that Udon started releasing last year.

    4. Polkadi~♪

I thought the same, until I clicked on the listing to find something totally different.

  8. holy shit, akira is on animelab

  9. Avengers Endgame’s final fight against Thanos, but It Has To Be This Way is playing in the background

Thanos would be a good senator. At least he has a plan for overpopulation

The Avengers were wrong. He’s not crazy... he’s BATSHIT INSANE!!

  10. I finally saw a doctor, and I finally got my problem diagnosed! I've been getting hit with panic attacks over these past three weeks. It's not severe, but it IS an issue. My body gets anxious, and then pumps me full of adrenaline to combat whatever concerns it, even when nothing is happening. This status update (link) was from my first one, which I was completely unprepared for. There are triggers that cause the attacks, and I need to work past overcoming them.

So I wasn't having some existential crisis after all, or some issue with loneliness! But those are all still part of the issue.

    1. SupahBerry

See? Nothing to be so afraid if you know the facts on what's what.

    2. Tatters

I wish for the best of you when you need to calm down.

When I'm having those things happen to me I would write or listen to relaxing music.

Heck even talking to someone will help out.

    3. Polkadi~♪

I’ve found ways to calm down over these past three weeks. A cup of tea for me, or some reading, listening to music, and just idling. No, seriously, idling works when you’re in a panic.

My doctor has said that those are good ways to fight it, and has shown me more ways as well.

      It’ll be gone soon enough.

    4. Tatters

Try some vitamin d with fish oil supplements.

Fish oil had been helping me with my after panic attacks from stopping birth control.

  11. My model kit figure of Mega Man's sister, Roll, came in! I assembled it over the afternoon, and it sits proudly on my shelf beside Proto Man! Now I need to get Mega Man himself...

i feel a little uncomfortable that, while assembling, i found roll's panties as part of the figure, of which they were... oddly detailed in it's shape O_o

    1. Little T

      Little T

That's actually the weakness of this model kit. My brother built her years ago, and because they put so much attention into.....realistic underwear modeling....the leg joints aren't very good. Poor Roll's legs keep falling off all the time. Hope you don't have the same problem!

    2. Polkadi~♪

One leg joint is really strong and holds on tight, the other falls off if you get a little rough with it. Still stands up great, but the quality of the figure is inconsistent, with some parts like the head being great, while the arms are odd. Nothing that a teeny tiny bit of glue to hold parts together can't fix.

I also need to paint both of my figures at some point...

    3. SupahBerry

I really don't want to know what was going through Dr. Light's head when put so much time into that when making Roll

    4. Polkadi~♪

For Dr Light, it's putting underwear on her, fair enough. Many humans wear underwear, only fair that a human-like robot gets it too.

For Kotobukiya, I have no idea. Just make it a white pelvis piece...

  12. I'm getting scared of even falling asleep.

What the hell is happening to me.

    1. Lord-Dreamerz

After you fall asleep and wake up later... you maybe will be in a new body within another dimension with horrible monsters and never can return back home. Falling asleep is scary indeed. :3

    2. Polkadi~♪

Fun, but that doesn't reassure me much.

    3. DanJ86

Can you identify the source of your fear?

Sleep is where people can't hurt you. The days events are forgotten and all that matters is recharging. The worries of life and the crippling stupidity of the masses don't matter. Maybe it's my age but sleep is often the best time of my day.

    4. tailsBOOM!

Maybe you should talk to a professional and get to the root of all this.  I find it very helpful to do that.

  13. Apparently, you're creating the home for the Villagers yourself. If you don't have a vacant home for them, they won't stay. That's what I've heard, at least. I could be wrong.
  14. Hey, you okay, Dan? The lack of an avatar, naming yourself "Nobody," this obviously isn't like you. You said you were made a fool of, and your optimism was seemingly put into question, and it all makes me worry for you.

    1. DanJ86

I was just trying to give advice. A suggestion based on my observations and what I've been told. But what I got as a reply was "lol."

That was it. I didn't care about the annoying members chiming in with opinions I didn't give a shit about. What made this hurt the most was that I was talking to a mod.

I've been coming and going on this forum for 10 years and that was the first time I felt like I didn't belong.

The update in which this occurred had since been deleted so I can't show what happened...

If there were any issues with a moderator, bring it up to an administrator. The last thing a moderator should do is make a member on the site feel uncomfortable.

No one should feel unwelcome in a community, especially when sharing your genuine thoughts and opinions.

  15. Add Mega Man Star Force 4 to the list of cancelled Mega Man projects.

    well shit

      Blue Blood

I'm still expecting Capcom to cancel MM11, issuing an update that removes it from systems.
