Sonic The Badass got a reaction from 7hePoet in Sonic Forces | PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC "The Next Generations"
I enjoyed the boost games. But I'd rather not stick to them. I feel like it's getting old and its too much of a restrictive gameplay style. At the same time that I say it's getting old, depending on how creative they can be with the level design they may be able to bring some more fun into it. But I'd rather us just move on from boost entirely, I don't think it can get that much more creative.

Sonic The Badass reacted to Ricardo Raionhardt in Hedgehog Development Kit - A framework for making Sonic games on Unreal Engine 4 + DOWNLOAD DEMO!!!
I think there are a lot of misconceptions and disinformation on people minds when it comes to Epic technology. UDK was UE3 without access to source code.
Can I make some questions to you? First I ask you what are those limitiations of UE3 that you talk about? Do you work with some of the big game engines like Unity, Cryengine, UE4 or other to understand the technical knowledge of knowing about advantages and disvantages or each engine?
Have you played one of those games: Bioshock, Gears of War, Batman Arkham series, Mirror's Edge, Unreal Tournament 3, Mass Effect or Infinity Blade? All games that were made on Unreal Engine 3/UDK? Because not in graphics neither gameplay or techinical achievements these games look "wonky". If Sonic GDK games looked like this, it was the game designer work to make the template work in a more interesting and less wonky way. If you say UE3 was bad, it is the same thing that saying your opnion is more valid than of the developers of these games I listed and all the others listed here: List of games created with Unreal Engine 3/UDK plus all the licencees around the world that did for other uses that was not gaming.
Still, UE4 takes any single thing that was difficult to do or technically complex from UE3 and made it easy to any person be able to use it, something I don't see other engines developers do. Not to say having excelent tools and last techs included and a source code that is clean as nothing.
Gistix work on Sonic 06 for Unity is amazing, but he have been doing it very before we started HDK, so is normal that his work looks more complete, after all, he even have levels to present while we didn't had time to set the default level yet. We did this so the community could follow HDK growing and become excited by what fan games it may help even more people to make. If you really isn't impressed with HDK, well I can't do anything for now, but maybe in just some time yet this year I may able to reach your expectatives (or not) when I show something complete here. Stay tuned and tell me when I do what you thought.
Ah, and I did not mean to be disrespectful or blunt, just putting things in their places because I hear these opnions about UE3/UDK/UE4 a lot from people that are nondevelopers.

I shall now take a bow.
I was originally just going to put it up as a mockup of what I thought the game might look like; but friends convinced me it could work as a fake leak.
    Here's the screenshot, anyway:

Sonic The Badass reacted to LongcrierCat in Sonic GDK (So How About that Green Hill Paradise Act 2?)
I've been looking to make sure and apparently no one except a few people are talking about this in a general thread or status update and considering that GDK is fanmade I felt it belonged here.
So, Sonic GDK, starting with a bit of history. First released on 2010, February 10, the Sonic Games Development Kit has been a collected code source for anyone in the Sonic fanbase at large to develop their own 3D Sonic the Hedgehog fangame. First started by Xaklse, this engine has grown to have many, many contributors building on this engine for the six years and counting since its release. Before modding Sonic Generations was a cool idea, you'd see a whole lot of people port levels over to GDK instead considering that since its inception it could do both 3D and 2D albeit with a bit of scripting via splines.
Splines, in mathematics and code, is "a numeric function that is piecewise-defined by polynomial functions, and which possesses a high degree of smoothness at the places where the polynomial pieces connect (which are known as knots)." What this does in videogames is make something like a loop de loop run its course automatically irregardless of the speed or momentum you were carrying until you hit the beginning point of the loop de loop. Splines are important to scripting a level's design and programming, making it to where you can never really "mess up" and so it wouldn't be a huge disappointment to a player who didn't do something the way they wanted to.
So this is where I bring up the biggest thing to hit the Sonic fanbase and franchise in recent history:

Sometime late in 2011, a person under the name SuperSonic68 got together a small team and started work on a new level with some tightened controls. Released on 2012, February 13, the original Green Hill Paradise hit, and sent a ton of people, including myself, into a big rush of excitement about what this could mean for any new Sonic game, official and fanmade, should they take after this kind of an experience. These days, Act One doesn't seem so focused, but the real novelty in this was taking advantage of Sonic's abilities and using that to traverse the landscape. It was an open world with a lot to offer, maybe even too much considering the sense of directionless aiming here and there.
So, it's been four years and SuperSonic68 came back. And to big gaming sites like Kotaku and Geek.com? This release is probably the biggest thing to hit Sonic since Sonic Mania was announced.

Released as of last week this 2016, August 27, Green Hill Paradise Act 2 has hit and it's caught plenty of people by surprise. This game's mechanics have been focused on recreating, as close as possible, an experience that was only capable in a highly tuned copy of Sonic Adventure. In this release you get to have a fully functioning set of rolling and momentum based physics where even your homing attack maintains your momentum. To add to this kind of experience, they brought in something a little similar to the boost but far closer to the origins of the boost function. Introducing to Sonic GDK, GHP Act 2 introduces Mach State, a blast of speed from your momentum gained that pulls in the capability for continuing to run on walls and all kinds of other crazy stunts.
I've had a lot of playtime on this (over 3 hours). This game is fantastic. This is everything I ever wanted out of 3D Sonic the Hedgehog. It's just fun to even roll into a small incline and use the momentum to jump off the apex of a slope's incline to jump high or to jump off the bottom of a slope and jump faster towards another slope to roll into and gain more momentum. Seriously, I'm saying this. It's a treat. There's glitches here and there, a tiny bit of collision detection problems, but if you can get yourself to a well functioning PC, this is easily the best 3D Sonic game engine ever made. If we see a few zones and a full game come out of this, I'll declare it the best Sonic game ever. It's good. Please play it.

Sonic The Badass reacted to Indigo Rush in Sonic GDK (So How About that Green Hill Paradise Act 2?)
It's definitely a rough demo, but I feel like there's a diamond in that rough. If given some better direction and more intentional level design (which isn't to say the level design isn't intentional), I believe it's the start of the definitive 3D Sonic experience. Needs work, but I think it speaks volumes that I had as much fun as I did with a fangame of all things. It's also worth noting that a lot of the weird non-palatable issues (wonky camera, clipping on walls, imperfect angles for rolling) are due to this being a non-professional effort by a small team; if you gave Sonic Team the task of designing the code around this concept for a 3D Sonic platformer, I think we'd see something truly amazing.
That being said, what makes this fangame so awesome isn't necessarily the final execution, but its proof of concept for 3D Sonic controls. Could it be better? Absolutely. Does that totally override everything its going for? I don't think so. I think GHP2 is one of the most fun experiences I've had controlling Sonic in 3D.
Again... needs work. But I liked it a lot.

Sonic The Badass got a reaction from Myst in Was Sonic Ever Good? - A discussion of the popular narrative
Was Sonic ever good is a matter of personal taste, it's very subjective. But just looking at facts, like others have said you don't become a world wide success to the point that you're more recognizable than Mickey Mouse by being bad unless you're a meme. Even then I doubt there's a meme more recognizable than one of the world's most Iconic characters. Sonic is engraved in gaming history whether you like it or not. That's not something that happens by being just OK. Hell even great games aren't as deeply carved into gaming history as Sonic. A lot of great games are forgotten by the next generation or two. Which means for Sonic to survive 25 years even after producing what is considered to be one of the most disappointing /bad AAA titles to ever exist, you know damn well Sonic has some merit, something special about him that keeps the franchise going. Whether you like him or not. His fans being idiots stuck in the past is not a reason for his survival. It's a cop out for you to say Sonic is trash. No way in hell do you have millions of people stuck to the past wasting $60 for every Sonic game that comes out if they know its going to be trash and their chasing a ghost.

Sonic The Badass reacted to Nightly in Was Sonic Ever Good? - A discussion of the popular narrative
On the topic of "Sonic was never good", I think that there are several reasons as to why this has been the the popular narrative as of late.
One of the reasons is that Sonic's "cool". Now, I don't think that being cool is a bad personality trait for a character, it can really make them stand out and gives them some personality. Now Sonic generally did this pretty well in the classic games (admittedly mostly cause he didn't talk), but as the series went forward and gave him a voice and dialogue written for him, they did it in the worst way possible. From Sonic Adventure onward, Sonic was "cool", and by that I mean that was his personality. He wasn't cool because he was a bit mischievous and foiled Dr. Eggman's plans anymore, he was "cool" because he was "cool", which is a surefire way to make a shallow and annoying character.
Also his voice doesn't help. Now I don't personally have a problem with Drummond, or Griffith (aside from the lack of voice direction either of them were given most of the time), but the way they voice Sonic just sounds like a "WHOA 90'S!" teenager, and I mean while it does fit "cool" Sonic, it's also easily grating for a lot of people. Most people don't want to hear some punk-ass teen trying to be all cool and spouting one-liners, it can very easily get annoying. I mean the "Sonic voice" exists for a reason:
(Just as a side note, Roger Craig Smith is probably the best voice actor we've had for the games so far in terms of his acting capabilities, but at the same time he just makes sonic sound like a 30 year old trying to be all "90's cool teenager")
Another reason why Sonic is seen to have always sucked, is because most of the popular people perpetuating it didn't grow up with the games, or they never liked Sonic in the first place. Now I'm not saying that they're wrong for not liking Sonic, video games like any art form is subjective and impossible to state as "good" or "bad" objectively, as objectivity in that case is pretty much meaningless. However, most of them DO view it as an objective fact, and people like Egoraptor, IGN and the like, can't see past their own biases. Now the reason they have those biases is because they didn't grow up with Sonic in the 90's as fans of it, or at least not huge fans. They looked at other platformers they grew up with like Mario and such, and based their understanding of game design on games like that. Mario games and classic Sonic games have very different mentalities behind their design. Mario is about seeing your obstacles coming up ahead, overcoming them by thinking of a way around it, and then being rewarded by being able to continue through the level. Sonic is about trial and error, running through the level, replaying them, memorizing the level layout, and then being rewarded with speed and flow going through them. Neither design principle is good or bad, it's all up to preference, but most popular people in the gaming space see it as an objective fact. So that's what creates the mindset of "If Mario is good, and Sonic doesn't play like Mario, then therefore Sonic is bad". Then the general gaming populous sees those opinions, and like most people that don't want to spend the time and money to really look into or form individual opinions on things that aren't really important to them, they just go with it. It also doesn't help that there's a ton of crap Sonic games, so if anyone tries to argue that there are good and great Sonic games, all they have to do is point at Sonic 06 or Say that Sonic isn't like Mario and therefore bad.
The last reason I can think of as to why this narrative exists is because of people that grew up with Sonic and are ashamed of it. This is a combination of there being a ton of crappy games and people not wanting to admit that they like something that they don't see of a good enough quality, them being ashamed of liking Sonic cause of his "cool" attitude, and all that weird fetish art and OC stuff online. Most people look back on what they were like as kids and teenagers in shame, and Sonic fits in perfectly with that. He's a blue talking cartoon hedgehog that spouts lines like "AW YEAH, THIS IS HAPPENIN", and a ton of the stuff you see people make of sonic online is very, and I hate using this word but, "cringe worthy". Top that off with all the weird fetish stuff and OCs and it's no wonder why lots of people think that the only people who like sonic are insane. And it's not like all the weird fan stuff is limited to Sonic, literally everything ever has fanworks like that, but Sonic has it brought to the forefront because 1, he's seen as obnoxious and obnoxious people/things bring attention to themselves, and 2, because of the long drought of crap and mediocre games makes headlines, and therefore people are going to notice Sonic, and therefore notice all the weird cringe shit. So because of all of this, the people who are ashamed of liking Sonic as a kid go along with the narrative because they don't want to be seen as a freak that doesn't know quality.

I mean, there isn't even official mod support on PC so thats not happening. When it comes to Bethesda they actually release mod tools for Fallout and Elder Scrolls. Sonic games we just figure out how they work by messing around with the games files. If Sega started releasing Mod Tools like Bethesda you'd see modders make progress a lot quicker. Bethesda has always been involved in the modding scene, they're the only company I see letting mod support happen on consoles. Even then from what I've heard about mods on consoles causing consoles to break I'm not so sure its a smart idea. People already know Sonic as the joke that makes bad video games. We don't need him to be known as destroyer of consoles while we're at it.

We got Sonic Mania. I'm fine with Classic Sonic being just a skin. I'd be fine with it even if Mania didn't exist. But I highly doubt this is the route Sonic Team is taking. It wouldn't make much sense considering how they handled Classic Sonic the last time. Showing that he'll be in the game, side by side with his modern counterpart in the teaser tells me we'll be seeing classic with his own levels.

So dimensional hopping that could cause possible legal issues and cringe? I can only see Boom happening. But I think Sonic Team doesn't want to touch Boom with a mile long stick. Bringing it in with the main series would leave a bad taste in the peoples mouth. Honestly, I'm expecting nothing less than a mediocre plot that isn't worth thinking about or remembering until we either get more details on the plot (along with the gameplay pls) or they announce Pontaff has no part in it.
