For one thing, I really like the fact that they are shoving less and less pointless, irrelevant characters into the series (WHO CARES IF ROUGE IS HOT?!?!? SHE'S A GENBERBENDED FANG!!!). Less jerkwads like Marine and Charmy, the better. (Yes, I know Charmy is a classic character)
On the other hand, some of my favourite storylines in the Sonic series involve characters who aren't Sonic, Tails, or Eggman. E-102 Gamma is a great example. His story, IMO, was told perfectly (as perfect as you can get in a 1st gen 3D game console, anyway) and his ending marks the second, and so far final time, I ever cried whilst playing a video game. (The first was the all-A rank ending in NiGHTS into Dreams.) Sonic rarely, on his own, gets a dramatic or interesting storyline all to himself - usually it's just the "I must save the world from Eggman!" deal.
So yeah. Torn like paper.
