Man Nintendo didn’t mention Zelda’s 35th anniversary. Guess they don’t care about one of their biggest IPs at all. /s

You got Pokemon 25 to look forward to at least.

A 2D Sonic fighting game by arc sys would be the greatest monkey paw wish.
-

-
-
The good thing about making it a Sonic game is that I think most of the community would prefer the game simple honestly. The only fighting game that gets any traction here is Smash
-
Supah Berry reacted to this
-
Well speaking as a "veteran" fighting game player, simplification doesn't actually solve much. What it ultimately comes down to is the player's skill (or lack thereof), and if there's little depth, then its gonna have a hard time keeping people's interest before they move on.
Granblue Fantasy Versus is simple, and while its fun, there's not that much depth to entice older players like myself and a newer player is likely to just move on.
Fighting games are just kind of hard to get into, because they require some level commitment that not many will (or can) put in.
As for the other points; those are BS lol. The first Blazblue game came out in 2008, and had a starting roster of 12, and the first iteration of Guilty Gear Xrd had 13. Small Rosters are common as fuck, so I don't know why people are making that an issue.
Skullgirls had EIGHT characters and nobody complains about that :V
Lobby is shit though, can't do anything about that.
-
-
-
I really don't think ArcSys games are so easy that they aren't fun. If anything, their games are one of the few fighting games that'd actually match the speed I'd want from a Sonic fighting game and would scratch the itch of...well, hitting buttons and always getting cool, stylish moves out of it.
And yeah, 10 to 12 characters are pretty darn normal for any fighting game that doesn't just recycle huge chunks of their previous game, as Kuzu said. I think it would be pretty sufficient.
-
Supah Berry reacted to this
-
@KuzuSkull Girls is also an indie game so it gets a pass. I feel like games like SFV got flack for how lack luster their roster was.
-
i still find it hilarious that Dimps is a fighting game master and the ONE time they could've had the chance to make a sonic game within the genre they excel at, Sonic Team was like "nah we got this one, keep up the good work on Advance 3 tho"
-
Supah Berry reacted to this
-
The reason why SFV got flack is because they went dramatically down from SFIV in Roster size. People want more characters or a good reason why they cut a ton of them (like completely overhauling their moveset/animation/artstyle/having a largely new roster). There's a reason why people are fine with GG Strive.
A new franchise, where people understand they have no ground work, doesn't have that issue at all.

Honestly, a simple but flashy Sonic fighter with a few unique character gimmicks similar to DBFZ is something I could go for. But I say that as someone who barely plays fighting games, and despite having a passing interest in them, I don't actively play them enough to get good at them. I just like seeing cool stuff that celebrates things I like lol.

The only thing that would bother me would probably be the story mode, since ArcSys storymodes are boring af most of the time in the presentation department - but then again, it would fit in right with the TSR one lol

Ah okay... yeah in that case I don't see the huge deal. From what I saw they covered the series' biggest hits and the most recent games since those are still like, viable, "current" products. The only good Sonic Boom game stopped being a relevant product years ago and if they were representing it for the cartoon's sake, well... the movie doesn't get acknowledged in the 30th material and that IS a "current product" so yeah.

Can't wait for dimps to come back and make another 2D Sonic game
-
Sonic 4 Ep 2 was kinda okay so maybe with better direction, might be decent?
-
AWild No.1 washed up gamer reacted to this
-
I know we can meme all day about how crappy Sonic 4 was, and the 3DS titles (well, Gens was alright), but Advance and Rush are genuinely good, and I feel if Dimps could get over some of their own design flaws (IE - the reliance on bottomless pits/boost pads), they have more than enough in them to put out a great 2D game.
-
Actually, I unironically support Dimps returning. They didn't get the bad rep they had now until Sonic Team turned them into their downgraded port printer, plus Sonic 4. While they were the scapegoat for shoving boost pads and pits in every level, Sonic Team's equally guilty of that now so what does it matter, but I digress.
Dimps were at their best making original Sonic titles, and the need to make "downgens" of the mainline titles has receded. If SEGA didn't already threw Dimps out cause the have a mandate where all 2D Sonics must be Classic only, maybe they could get their second chance. Sure, there'll always be those who look down on their games for not being the Classics/Mania, but that's what be a unique take is for, innit?
plus everyone knows we need another sonic battle/dimps sonic fighter

@Sega DogTagzDumps didn't make Battle; that was Sonic Team.
@Indigo Rush Originally I remember thinking that S4E2 was significantly improved over E1. But man... It ain't. It's pretty awful. Dumps have made good Sonic games in the past, including the Advance and Rush games, there was something of an evident increase in sloppiness witb each game. When they stopped working on wholly original Sonic games and started making secondary versions and S4, their output became pretty bad.
I think Dimps could potentially make a decent Sonic game again, but I'd have to see it first. Their most recent offerings were all rubbish and I'm not lamenting the fact that they haven't been part of the series since the the absolutely God awful Lost World 3DS.
-
-
-
Dimps is made out of EX-SNK and Street Fighter Devs (the CEO and founder of Dimps is the creator of Street Fighter AND Fatal Fury, for crying out loud)
Dimps was involved with Soul Calibur 6
Dimps made Street Fighter 4 and 5If you're gonna hire them, Sega - let them make a fighting game, for christ's sake
At least give them a shot(that being said, I love their GBA and DS Sonic platformers, warts and all, so I'd be down for more of those if the quality is up to snuff)

To go back to that status Azoo asked about why Classic Sonic should stay around.
It's mostly the gameplay and the aesthetic. And if they were to make another modern 2D game I'd like to be more experimental like the Advance/Rush stuff.
I'm not too big on characters only being trapped to that dimension tho. That's straight up dumb.
-
if they're moving on from boost as a whole for Sonic, I'd guess it'd be more Advance than Rush. And even then, Advance was just classic Sonic with an attack button and a kinda-boost.
personally a new 2D Sonic with the modern aesthetic but the classic gameplay would be the ideal lol. extra points if it goes beyond pixel art and has like a drawn/painted aesthetic
-
Iko and Redemption reacted to this

the advance games were a gradual process of shedding genesis gameplay elements with each sequel; and once they were finally able to fully rewrite the gameplay proper with rush, they ran with it and haven't looked back, even for the games that were supposed to be classic. so i find it hard to believe that if they did decide to drop boost gameplay for 2D sonic, they'd suddenly revert back to genesis gameplay like nothing happened (let alone do it properly). more likely than not they'd probably just build a different type of 2D sonic.
likewise, if they were to actually revive the advance series with a new 2D game, i imagine they would be more interested taking forward all of the stuff they added to those games (such as the proto-boost mechanic, co-op abilities, and all of the secondary mechanics like the R-tricks and alternate attack abilities) than they would be in keeping any remaining holdovers from the genesis gameplay.

Redemption and Tracker_TD reacted to this

@Milo I think that with the success of Mania, genesis-like gameplay will become a standard for any 2D sonic game from now onward. If that leak is real and they are not interested in continuing the Mania series, I'm pretty sure that the elements of Mania that made people like it will be preserved. So I expect the next 2D Sonic Game to at least try to emulate the genesis gameplay (succesfully or not is another matter), be it modern or classic. This is why I'm so hopeful that the rumored 2D game might be more like Advance than Rush. But nothing is certain yet, only the time will tell.

He is union but I think he does something called "financial core" which basically gives him more flexibility. I know Stephanie Sheh does it too. Basically they pay their dues to the union to keep their protections but they're free to work on whatever they want. EDIT: I appear to be a bit misinformed on how fi-core works if the official SAG-AFTRA website is anything to go by. I remember Stephanie Sheh had explained it in a panel once and it sounded different but it's been years so I'm not clear on the details.
Kinda whatever about this since I don't care for his work personally but he's fine, but now I'm guessing based on his wording and what Colleen responded to, Prime is likely a separate thing altogether so the entire game cast may not be getting replaced.

So I was rewatching all the sonic forces trailers and they really did everything they could to hide how shallow the overall package was.
Sunset Heights was the first level that was shown and they showed off 30 seconds then cut it off right when they were about to show a 2D section
When they showed gameplay snippets for the avatar the day it was announced all they showed off him using the wisp ability like it was a mobile game
The pessimism towards that game’s release was completely justified. Cause something felt off.
-
remember how during initial livestream builds of sunset heights at e3, they cut the gameplay feed right when players were about to complete the level
mainly because shadow was there at the goal ring
even though the in-character dialogue mentioned shadow was traveling over the city at high speed near the end of the level
oh and it was nothing but green hill/sunset heights levels up until mid-september (eight-nine weeks away), when they finally showed a new stage (casino forest).

The Sonic DLC from what I saw did make me think of it as somewhat Rise of Lyric but done right, so maybe it could work. I will say the movement should be faster, and maybe trying squeezing in some momentum in where it matters it we should be good. The prospect of having a large roster to throw the non-Sonic characters some bones, incuding normally off limit character like Mighty, Nack and Tangle, or evening running around as a Motobug or Omochao is pretty enticing.

Seeing as how I enjoyed the Boom TV show and liked the fact that Rise of Lyric felt like an actual adventure game with an adventure story despite the game itself being jank, I can't say I agree. Rise of Lyric's story still wasn't ideal but if I'm comparing it to the stuff where Sonic talked endlessly at a robot that didn't talk back, three separate times without a hint of clever writing to at least offset the cheesiness than no.
However, my ideal wish is for something like the IDW comics regardless.
Plus, both Pontaff and Boom are gone. There's no point for me in wondering which I would prefer now.
-
Supah Berry and PC the Hedgehog reacted to this
-
Well you see I feel like the boom tv show is incredibly mediocre and amateurish. Writers are filled with hacks and there's absolutely nothing funny about it even by sitcom standards and it doesn't help that people on twitter post the same 5 jokes repeatedly and it's like really?
Rise of Lyric was an interesting premise but ya know how that game went. At least with that game when it tried to be funny it was genuine and I actually felt something. With the show nah I never laughed once.
-
Interesting. I can't help but feel that a tad hyperbolic (especially since I don't personally know the writers. Calling them hacks seems a bit harsh without much knowledge concerning their character on my end) but it's not my place to question the validity of someone's genuine opinion on something. I do feel that the show was far funnier than the game though. There are a number of clips that float around Youtube and Twitter that elicit chuckles and sometimes laughs from me. I would still go with a more adventurous game that had lukewarm humor than a full on comedy of course.
Though, as I said, it doesn't matter to me in the end. It's done and I've put it behind me. Perhaps I'll revisit the material when I feel curious about that one time back in 2014 when SEGA decided Sonic needed an unnecessary, weird multi-media push with a version of Sonic that nobody asked for but I've no strong feelings one way or the other.
-
@SonicWind welp, I stand corrected.
that said, i'm still a bit surprised that was the only thing they were involved with for the show. would had expected them to do at least one standalone episode.
-
@Dr. Detective Mike Maybe hacks isn't the right word to use. They've gone on record saying that the whole point of the show was basically telling as much jokes as you could for 11 minutes and not caring about the episode premise it is a problem, especially if your episodes just abruptly end. At that point just make it a bunch of skits. Also they really love to brag on twitter that made and even going as far as saying that it got cancelled because it was too smart.

After thinking about it I can safely say that Yuji Naka is the Keiji Inafune of Sonic Team.
He has talent but it was the team of having the right people at the right time to make successful titles at SEGA. But since his departure he hasn’t had a hit. Mainly because his outputs aren’t that good or got screwed over by something.
