  1. Doing some research of Mighty No.9 and it's amazing how much of a train wreck this entire thing ended up being. With the over promising, working on 10 different platforms, lack of communication, being screwed over by Deep Silver and that God awful disaster that was Red Ash.

I don't think the game itself is bad but everything surrounding it and what it represents it's hard not to justify the hate. Like man could you imagine if this was managed properly?

Ugh, I'd forgotten about Red Ash. The thought of having a Mega Man Legends spiritual successor snatched away by general incompetence and mishandling makes me sad.

      Balding Spider

That Red Ash animation was the only good thing to come out of this whole debacle to be honest.

      Dejimon11

Considering who Inafune had hired to develop Red Ash and their track record of games yeah I didn't think it was gonna be good even if the kickstarter was a success.

Call me crazy I actually wouldn't mind a sequel to MN9 since Mighty Gunvolt Burst proves that the problem wasn't the world and characters it was just Inafune's bad management. Plus now that concept is owned by Level-5 and now that they can have that Level-5 money I think it could work out well.

And to think even Mega Man Fully Charged would be getting "competition" out of the whole ordeal.

I think what really did it for me was trying to coast on the fans good will for Mega Man Legends specifically and still held resentment for Capcom at the time to launch another project while the first project for fans of Classic Mega Man was publicly going down in flames.

For me it was when they announced that second Kickstarter/crowdfunding for voice acting. Then they tried make a 3rd one for DLC despite the fact that the game itself isn’t out yet.

  3. So is it safe for me to say that the Shantae series  isn't as big as many people make out to be especially compared to other indie games? Like there's a cult following and a vocal fanbase but not on the same level as Shovel Knight, Undertale, Cuphead etc have had.

    1. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

it isn't but is a fine series as it is. Gameplay wise is nothing super remarkable but it has charm up the wazoo.

    2. Ferno

      Ferno

Tbh I've always felt that the series would work better as a TV show/ anime than a game series, like I love the aesthetic, music, plot, and the characters, but the gameplay's always felt like the weakest aspect that I always kinda trudge through to experience more of said aesthetic, music, plot and characters.

    3. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

@Fernohonestly i can vibe with this idea, shantae gameplay is kinda basic, so take it off the weakest aspect.

I'm not seeing what the issue here is. Most indie games aren't as popular as the ones you mentioned.

    5. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I believe it's market share is as decent of a size as any series (indie or not) can hope for tbh. Sure its not something like Undertale (or any other one off indie juggernaut that pops up every two years or so) though that's no reason to really discredit it. It does a lot of things right, consistently shows up, and still has a solid fan showing. Series don't need to do crazy numbers to be relevant.

That being said I am 100% down on a Shantae anime

  7. Thinking about yeah why are so many people confident that an SA1 remake is coming? Like there's no evidence or anything to support it literally all we got was Iizuka talking about how he saw the technical flaws in the game and would like to remake it a few years ago.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i don't think there's anything to it beyond remakes being a relatively common thing at this point and SA being a game that's generally liked and old/janky enough to "need" a remake. i wouldn't be surprised if they do jump on the bandwagon and announce a remake, but i don't see any real reason to expect it.

    2. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

This series has a real nag for going after current trends. Remakes are happening all over so, tbh, I don't know why people are going out of their way to say it won't happen.

      Spoiler

(and I know it's been directly proven to not be the case but it really does feel like Sega has put more of an emphasis on Adventure call-outs recently than before. it's a baseless feeling, but one that myself and apparently many others do have nonetheless)

Personally though, I just find the idea to be a much more telling test than seeing them fumble with something new currently. Not only do we get a direct comparison to really dig in just as how far gone they currently are, but it'll also really show where their heads are at in multitude of categories as SA1 did a lot of shit (story events, game mechanics, level scale, ect.). If they can't make a competent remake of it... there's no hiding imo.

No "it only actually had a year in development" or "they were trying something new" excuses.

also, i just like adventure, sue me

    3. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

There has been lots of hints for the last couple years that Sonic Team MIGHT be interesting in doing a Sonic Adventure remake. Saying folk are seeing something that isn't there is silly.

    4. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I like adventure as well it's in my top Sonic game and I would love nothing more than for it to be remade. I just feel like we're just grasping at straws and all the "adventure teases" aren't really teases at all.

    5. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

It doesn't personally matter to me if they do it or not, i have nothing against it for sure. But i seem enough hints or even "evidence" to say there be a good chance for it. I do mean more then a few signs also.

  8. Not sure why people think that you can't tell an interesting Mario story that isn't an RPG. It's not like they're plenty of characters though the series history that can could use.

Should clarify in terms of other mediums like a comic book or a movie. You can tell more than "Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser"

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

You can tell interesting stories in the games. Hell, they have before with Galaxy.

Thing is, they literally just don't want to most of the time.

    2. Blacklightning

      Blacklightning

You can, Shigeru just won't let you. Even what little we got in Mario Galaxy had to be practically hidden from him until almost the verge of going gold. I get that gameplay always comes first and all, but we've been doing the same song and dance for 37 years now and it's gotten extremely silly.

    3. Celestia

      Celestia

I don't think anyone is actually under the impression you literally can't do more with the stories, especially in adaptations, but I understand the concern that Miyamoto and other Nintendo higher ups will rein it in.

I don't expect that to happen with the movie though, if only because of necessity and expectations (which I assume is why the RPGs were more detailed...uh, at first).

    4. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

@Blacklightning the funny thing is with Odyssey it was literally the first time Miyamoto backed off and literally let them do whatever the hell that they wanted and look how that turned out

    5. Plumbers_Helper

      Plumbers_Helper

As a long time Mario fan on the internet, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear someone say that on an internet forum. I think people are often too quick to latch on to Shigeru Miyamoto's view of story in video games, ironically something he helped popularize. I'm cautiously optimistic for that upcoming animated Mario movie.

Super Mario Adventures was of course great, but I got so much enjoyment from the cartoons as a kid. So many hero characters growing up were always tall, buff dudes that felt larger then life, but Mario was always special to me because he was just a regular guy: A poor plumber from Brookyln fighting for good because no one else will. I always found that inspiring, as corny and badly animated as the Mario cartoons were - they are what made me a fan of Mario in the first place. I didn't get a Super Nintendo until after the cartoons disappeared from television.

Brooklyn Bound was always one of my favorite episodes, it dealt with how Mario & Luigi felt about being lost in another world and having to fight war after war with no way to get home...and what they would do if they had that chance to go home again. I wish the series would have been more like that episode, focusing more on the characters' thoughts and feelings then on parody after parody. I'm such a dork for the Mario cartoons that I even have one of those bootleg plushes that resemble Bowser's appearance in the cartoons.

Sorry for gushing about the cartoons, they've always been a childhood favorite of mine.

    6. Dr. Mechano

      Dr. Mechano

I'd say platformers can and have told interesting stories.

      Galaxy as people have mentioned.

Sunshine's story was simple, but still charming and more complex than just "jump on goombas, beat bowser, wahoo" by giving Bowser Jr. his own misguided motivations in the game.

I'd argue Odyssey had a decent story too. It's goofy, sure, but it's full of character and even has direct continuity nods to Donkey Kong of all things, with Mario going back to the town of his very first game.

The thing about these examples is, they just have less space to tell a story than RPGs do. RPGs by their very nature are loaded with text, which gives the designers more time to flesh out the characters and world. Mario stories can be engaging and fun outside of RPGs, but there's a reason the RPGs (at least, the older ones) stand head and shoulders above the rest of the series when it comes to storytelling; the conventions of the genre simply allow more room for it.

      @Plumbers_Helper

      I couldn't agree more.

I've come to terms with Nintendo's stance on the Mario Bros.' birth. But I grew up with the Brooklyn backstory and in my opinion it is 100% more interesting than Yoshi's Island; It makes Mario and Luigi just a pair of regular joes who stumble into heroism, as opposed to being a couple of magically destined babies who were prophesied from birth to be heroes. I feel like it also gave them a slight edge, a bit of a culture, a sort of tangible way that they were different from the other denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. As people who didn't grow up in a whimsical land of magic, they'd have a different perspective on the world than the other characters, and I always found that interesting.

I really would like to think that, shortly after their early childhood in the Mushroom Kingdom, the brothers moved to the Metro Kingdom - where they opened a plumbing shop (Mario Bros. Plumbing was in the artbook for Odyssey, so it was at least on Nintendo's minds!), Mario briefly dated Pauline, the events of the original Donkey Kong, Wrecking Crew, and Mario Bros. happened, etc. - before they heard about Bowser attacking their childhood home and boogied back to the Mushroom Kingdom to lend a hand. At least this way, Mario's and Luigi's Brooklyn upbringing can have a kind of broad-strokes basis in the game universe.

  9. By 7 I really hope that means: people who worked on fan games and learned to become professional developers like the Mania staff rather than "anybody who's ever made a fan game is eligible"

I think those days are behind us. Nintendo is happy with their current mascots, Microsoft seemingly doesn't care about that market, and Sony has mascots but hasnt really been using them aside from Ratchet sparsely. Aside from the big 3, most gaming companies seem to be interested in nostalgic games, sports, or hyper realistic experiences.

    4. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Believe that's easier said than done. I don't really think it's by chance that we have so few and have, let's be real here, only one actually doing well. It's a huge task creating a character that's both likable to a large audience and can be placed in that many genres. Hell, it isn't even something any of these three series aimed for in the first place. That kind of stuff has to come up naturally.

Add in that it more than likely requires a substantial financial backing to support that many experimental titles (seeing as all three of these had the backing of a full on first party at one point or another... also since the only one currently doing well is still benefiting from one) and idk, seems a bit out there imo. Would probably be simpler to take some other, pre-established, well known character and start making games for them.

That being said though, isn't this already a thing for, like, most of Nintendo's IPs?

    5. Cayenne

      Cayenne

I think that Mario, Sonic and Crash were the right mascots in the right time. Those three characters introduced a mix of technology and gameplay styles that were very different and deep for their respective console generations.

Platformers were also a very popular video game genre when they reached their stardom. While we are seeing a resurgence of platformers now, personally, I wouldn't say that they are that popular compared to what they were before.

IMO, a mascot will need to have four things to be on the same level of those guys:

      - A uncommon and fun mix of ideas and game design;

      - An appealing character design;

      - An interesting world;

      - Tendencies from the current years.

crash vs Mario vs sonic | Consolle

Crash was the de-facto mascot of the Playstation; he was absolutely on-line with, if not well beyond Mega Man, and I say that as someone who far, far prefers MM to Crash. Hell, nowadays I'd argue he's jumped back to the kind of popularity Sonic used to enjoy, thanks to the wildfire success of N.Sane.

    12. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

Mega Man honestly isn't as popular as many people make it out to be. With Crash at least you can say he was easily recognizable in the 90s and considered to the playstation mascot. And apparently was more popular than Sonic in Japan.

They've had a track record of saying this in the past and then blowing it. Remember how they removed every negatively rated game on Meta critic off store shelves and we're riding high with the positive reception only for them to come crashing with Boom?

Or how they delayed TSR for quality reasons and the game is still a technical mess with shooty online?

Hell I remember when they were doing those stupid clues for a year and one of them was a morse code basically saying "you told us to take our time and we're doing it"

I watch AntDude for his opinions and thoughts, but his videos aren't funny and fall into the awkward category way too often. Not the self-deprecating and awkward funny he's going for, just uncomfortable.

My absolute least favourite is the skit that's shown up on virtually every YouTubers channel when they do a collaborative video.

"Oh hi X. What are you doing here?"

"I was looking for the bathroom and think I took a wrong turn and ended up on your channel. LOL"

Shut the fuck up. Any time they they these skits it comes off terribly. AntDude did one with NitroRad where they had a rivalry going on and it was unwatchable.

  16. One more thing this isn't a jab at the game at all but it says a lot that more people still talk about Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart than TSR

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Well for one, it is a spinoff of the best 3d Sonic fangame, which many see as better than the newer Sonics. Plus it has mods for even more characters, like SRB2, on top of the already larger default roster (counting the bonus character wad that comes with the game), so it can even attract non-Sonic fans regarding crossover potential. Probably as close to a big Mario Kart fangame we can possibly get.

Speaking of, one reviewer took it higher and called SRB2K better than MK8D, because the former is free and the later is associated with Nintendo's "shit" online. (A jab that even I, annoyed with the online situation myself, found uncalled for)

SRB2K has a really cool aesthetic to it as well. Really sets it apart from the crowd, aside from people using custom characters which naturally breaks that aesthetic. Being able to use retro 3D models was pretty cool to see.

Despite how meh it is, and still not buying it, I actually kinda regret going with CTR: Nitro over it. I was so incredibly turned off by the monetization and live service-yness of that game Activision pushed on it, looking at TSR it was like a look back at what games used to be like. It was simple and small, but at least reasonable in getting all the content and didn’t feel overwhelming and stressful with a storefront with a timer on content that may not come back for weeks, with a required internet connection to access it and the bulk of the currency.

okay rant done. Long story short TSR > CTR:NF at least morally and consumer friendly wise

    4. Dejimon11

Nah the moral of the story is fuck both of them and play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The less we ignore the existence of that mobile garbage the better

    5. KHCast

I still kinda prefer ASRT mechanically the most out of any of the modern kart racers, but MK8D is still high up there. The less we say about MK Tour, the better.

    6. Dr. Detective Mike

      Dr. Detective Mike

I legitimately really love playing TSR so I'm afraid there won't be any fucking of it on my end. I'm mostly just really disappointed it didn't come with a shit ton more of what it had to offer.

I may actually play a few rounds tonight now that I think about it. And when I do, I'll probably still be like "I wish I could do this with more characters and stages."

Eggmanland, Oil Ocean, Hang Castle... I need to race through them yesterday.

    7. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

You see I would of enjoyed TSR a lot more if wasn't so blatant that they were on a tight budget and weren't cutting corners to release a game even with a delay.

The character roster is weak with all the wide a varied sonic characters why only 15? Why not 21 at least hell the first racing game had more characters than this. You could of had the chaotix as one team. You could of paired Blaze and Silver with Marine or ugh Stick or added the Babylon Rouges as racers characters who originated from a racing game. The stage selection was pretty safe and I don't know why they went with the 3 acts per zone like a classic sonic game. It's worse when you realize that 1/3 of the stages are from the last 2 games.

The Team mechanic was a side mode instead of the main selling point because at it's core it's shallow as hell and comes off more as an after thought. They even removed the extra modes like Capture the chao and battle race.

Oh and the online lobby is so bad. I don't know how Mario Kart 8 a game that came out 6 years ago(on this month) has a battle online experience than this. You can join in and spectate a race. There's tournaments etc. I can't even find anybody online at all because it's poorly implemented and they said "we'll fix it" but they haven't/ God the more I think about this game the more I hate it and I realize that literally the only good thing to come out was the soundtrack and the animated shorts. Oh and Zavok is actually the best character in the game for some bizarre reason

    8. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

I thought it was ok. Nothing too offensive but not the best thing ever. I did had fun but I wish the roster had more going for it.

...Like why Zavok? I also didn't like some of the challenges like the fucking Drift and Ring challenge. Seriously fuck that.

Overall I thought it was ok but could had been better. Its nice to see a decent Sonic game for once and have it not fuck up.

    9. Dr. Detective Mike

      Dr. Detective Mike

Yeah, I really liked it. Again, I just wish there were more OF it. 15 characters is not acceptable. Most games today at least have a base roster in the 20s and Sonic was lauded for being a franchise with "too many characters". Nowadays they don't use them outside of mobile games though, whether it be something low budget or not.

Same with the stages. There were some neat ones to be sure. I liked Boo's House and seeing King Boom Boo again. I really liked the idea of Haunted Castle, taking Spagonia and using the haunted elements of the clock tower to make a spooky stage out of it. But despite that a ton were repurposed from other All-Stars Racing games.

I don't have any complaints regarding the characters they chose. I just want more of them. I never gonna be like "Why Zavok?" Why not Zavok? Why not everyone? I know the answer to that is money but they were just three characters short of the full main cast. It still feels off.

The team mechanic was really fun though. To the point where if I turned it off, I'd miss it greatly. That game was just not built for being without it. It definitely wasn't an afterthought considering how intensely different it is with it off.

Then of course there's the amazing soundtrack. Goddamn, it's so good.

I never play games online so I don't know or care about how good or bad the lobby was. If it was bad, my condolences I guess but I'm a single player dude all the way unless I have a friend over and when we played it we had a ton of fun at least. That's all that matters to me.

I really liked it. It was a good game. I just wish it had taken the chance to capitalize more on what made it good so it could have been better.

      1. They rated it lower than 06. A few valid points or not, that combined with their gameplay showcasing their inept stance towards the game says all it really needs to.

      2. The guy simply shouldn't be as prominent in this series as he actually is. When he went after a respected member of the original staff, among many other things, that's not good. I don't care how long ago it was. It's just openly showcasing how little you care about both the brand and Naka himself when you let him then promote shit because "lol lp was funny."

Like I get it, bringing up old shit can be annoying but that doesn't mean there isn't any merit to those complaints.

Again, I get it can be annoying but this really isn’t anything new (ironically) or specific to Sonic. Especially when nothing is really going on across the board.

i mean, that review was laughably poor.

a lot of his complaints (like the jump button being unresponsive, which i can tell you is simply not true) are based off his own lack of skill, because the person they got either seldom plays sonic games or seldom plays platformers.

    6. Supah Berry

Classic case of thinking sequels before you even finish just one film. How many mothers do you know that are more excited in having a second and third child when they're still pregnant with their first????

The sad part is that I still expect them to get away with moving forward with this HBCU, unlike how we stopped Mummy from doing so. In the end, the kids will still est this up just as they intended. I don't know how movie profits work when they run on having copied bought and rented digitally, but when everyone's copped up indoors, watching it's only a few clicks away.

  23. You see the problem with the state of the Mario RPGs is irritating because you'd think after the success and praise with Odyssey for being creative they would actually give more creative freedom with the rest of the Mario spinoffs. Aces was a step in the right direction but idk.

Nintendo's channeling a little modern Disney here: Mario already a successful mega franchise with plenty other sub series that are good, along with the rest of their mega franchises. They're already drowing in their profit and postive rep from so many others, so of course they won't bother with something that won't even give them a scratch.

Now Mario Party's still a long ways to go from Super "Ship game out with just four maps and a co op mode and then completly forget it" Party and it's pretty hard to say where Kart's gonna go from Deluxe Wii U Port 8 and Gacha Fest Tour, so it's only halfway improved.

      Wrapped in Black

Nothing is confirmed but if it's really down to choice it feels like the games are working against their own interests in a lot of ways if they're trying to build memorable worlds and characters.
I'm not sure why, if you wanted your Bob-omb to stick out in the player's head, you'd make it look like the others.

The more uniform design for all of the characters across all the RPGs after around 2010 was really noticeable in general.

That's not even getting into mechanics and story, which we know for a fact are the way they are due to feedback from Club Nintendo  surveys about Super Paper Mario.

    8. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I know that during the development of Color Splash they outright said that they weren't aware backlash until it was too late. So I figured that they would be aware and take what's into considering what people wanted. i know that there's more issues to the direction this series took than "Miyamoto is bad" like a lot people misinterpret/
