  1. Sonic Mania was nominated in the VGAs. Guess that's what happens when you make a great game. They should do it more often. Just saying.

      A Sonic game in the VGAs is surreal, not gonna lie.

      I'm proud of the Mania team for doing such a great job, though. They absolutely deserve the nomination.

      kinda a stab a ST if you ask me. Your fans make better games than you. Better 2D games at that. S4E2 was booty. Apparenly mania is godlike.

      @Eternal EXI consider it less a stab and more of a "hey, this game was actually pretty darn great" type of deal because regardless of who made it (in an alternate reality where ST did make it) it would still be nominated. At the end of the day people just like good games plain and simple, there isn't any bias or spite going on here.

      Would it still be nominated? While S4E1 wasn't excellent. It was still very well received by critics. Sonic Advance games were the best 2D games until mania. But those didn't get anything....(unless I'm incorrect).

      @KHCast That's kinda what I was getting at. But poorly worded. Technically a Fan Game was better than anything the ACTUAL company made in years. Even though it is a heavy nostalgic rush.

      If Mania had more than 80% rehashed tropes and concepts then the nomination would've been fine but eh... While Mania was an absolute great time, having 12 zones with only 4 being new is stupid I don't care if the zones are remixed or not. 

      "but we can get more original content in sonic mania 2!!!!!" yeah well I'll believe it when I see it considering sonic has been rehashed bullshit for the last 6 years.

      The aesthetics may be reused but the actual level design - the stuff that makes the real meat of the gameplay - is not.

      I don't really see the issue. It's a level that looks like, sounds like, and is called Green Hill Zone - but it's not literally the same stage as the one from Sonic 1. The actual map is different, and that's the important part.

      @Eternal EX I wouldn't call low 70 metascores "decent".

      Granted, the game went down far better with the reviewers than it did with the fans, but Episode I wasn't exactly a critically-acclaimed game.

      It's still Green Hill Zone, it's still Flying Battery Zone, it's still fucking Chemical Plant Zone. It's still god-forsaken Metallic Madness and Oil Ocean who the fuck decided those two stages. 

      Level design doesn't help me if I've seen these places before. That's why Studiopolis, Press Garden, Mirage Saloon and Titanic Monarch are the best and greatest and most fun part of Mania for me. It's what the whole game or at least a good 70% of it should have been.

      Ditch Metallic Madness and Oil Ocean, ditch Chemical Plant (though I am grateful for the Wacky Workbench elements), ditch Green Hill Zone give me I don't know Emerald Hill or the sunset green hill from Sonic Advance 3, it's the same place and trope but at least visually I'm seeing something different.

      Forces level design is shit but I'm glad they spiced up the stages a bit visually with the desert elements in Green Hill, the snow and spaceships in Network Terminal and Spaceport, Death Egg is the same shit but I missed an outer space stage for so long, the only similar thing was the ARK in Shadow's rival battle in Generations. It doesn't excuse the atrocious level design but at least I feel I'm going through a changed place thematically.

      I mean, sure. I want new zones as much as the next guy. Each Genesis game had a whole pack new zones, rather than reusing old ones. I'd prefer if Mania 2 did the same thing.

      But the level aesthetics are far less important to me personally than the actual level design and gameplay, which I thought Mania excelled at. Making every stage aesthetically new and unique would have been nice and I hope the sequel does just that, but for me it's a pretty minor complaint in the grand scheme of things.

      I'm on the opposite side. Level thematics, aethestics and looks are as important as level design for me. They compliment each other. Two sides of the same coin. Level design doesn't cut it for me if the thematics and looks of the stage doesn't cut it for me. And the rehashed zones from Mania sure doesn't give that coin the value it deserves. 

      Looks? Yes, Mania is beautiful. Thematics? I've seen 90% of the game's shit before in another game. I want new. And stuff like Forces's returning stages while it helps it's not enough. 

      Mechanio I challenge you to a duel until we can agree on something for once. We shall boost/spindash at midnight.

      I do want to say that obviously I think aesthetics/"spectacle" are still important, even if I think they're less so. I obviously do spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about story and characters (usually about how I think they're garbage), and other things that have nothing to do with gameplay.

      In Forces' case, I just feel like most of the levels look faded and grimy and unpleasant. And I get it. That was the point, show how ruined the world is after Eggman took over (nevermind that these stages look this way even before he conquers the world). But even if it's an understandable and intentional design decision, I just found the game's style in general really visually (and audibly) unappealing. That's a matter of personal preference, though, and I'm not going to treat it as a real mark against the game like I do its overly linear gameplay and bad writing.

      Either way, I agree with you that I'd ideally like to see all new zones in the next game. Make returning zones rare, so that they feel special, not tired and overdone.
