Every sonic video essay now will have at least 1 of the following
-mentions the series history
-talks about the dark ages
-doesn't like the current direction
-Mario is basic/bland or bad
-Writing is bad
-Feels like the world is against them for being a sonic fan
-
i'm glad that fans are the main ones driving discussion around the series now but so many of these essays are redundant. if you've seen one in the past 5 years you've seen em all

It seems like a delayed response if anything. I imagine it was something on the back of people's minds but after Forces and the lack of info it leaped to the front. The rants set off a wave from other people and so on. A lot of the stuff complained about actually happened in the early 2010s, but back then people didn't want to go against the mainstream opinion that Colors and Generations were great and that Sonic's Twitter was great. Now that time has gone onward and we've seen others that hoped things like "they'll surely bring back Tails and Knuckles once Sonic is right!" have faded. Once is a misstep, twice is a pattern. It's easy to go "Sure Lost World was different, but the next game will be better!". Then after waiting for years fans got Forces and reception was mostly negative again.
tl;dr 2000s fans are in the same place Classic fans were in the late 2000s/early 2010s-

@McGroose Mario himself is bland. And solid as his games may be, you can quite reasonably call the NSMB series and 3DL/W bland.

i wouldn't say mario is bland. he's not exciting, but he's got a clear happy-go-lucky kind of charm to him.

Besides the NSMB-derived aesthetics, bland is the last description I would use to describe 3D World :S

Really? Not one who even watch these things, I always thought they say Mario is better than Sonic and should set an example of what makes better games. I guess they all caught on that the "why can't Sonic be more like Mario" complaints aren't working as recent outputs indicate.
These guys must think the image of Mario and Sonic being together is as forbbiden of a relationship as the Tom & Jerry movie. Maybe that's why there's no real M&S platformer: they have to settle with friendly competition.

@Wraith This is what kind of irks me more than anything. People think they're saying something profound, but all they're doing is just parroting what everyone else has been saying for the past few years. It's exhausting to be honest.
