  1. We need a new Mario/Sonic/Crash. Basically a mascot character with world wide appeal and branches off in other different genres and supplementary materials.

      I think those days are behind us. Nintendo is happy with their current mascots, Microsoft seemingly doesn't care about that market, and Sony has mascots but hasnt really been using them aside from Ratchet sparsely. Aside from the big 3, most gaming companies seem to be interested in nostalgic games, sports, or hyper realistic experiences.

      Believe that's easier said than done. I don't really think it's by chance that we have so few and have, let's be real here, only one actually doing well. It's a huge task creating a character that's both likable to a large audience and can be placed in that many genres. Hell, it isn't even something any of these three series aimed for in the first place. That kind of stuff has to come up naturally.

      Add in that it more than likely requires a substantial financial backing to support that many experimental titles (seeing as all three of these had the backing of a full on first party at one point or another... also since the only one currently doing well is still benefiting from one) and idk, seems a bit out there imo. Would probably be simpler to take some other, pre-established, well known character and start making games for them.

      That being said though, isn't this already a thing for, like, most of Nintendo's IPs?

      I think that Mario, Sonic and Crash were the right mascots in the right time. Those three characters introduced a mix of technology and gameplay styles that were very different and deep for their respective console generations.

      Platformers were also a very popular video game genre when they reached their stardom. While we are seeing a resurgence of platformers now, personally, I wouldn't say that they are that popular compared to what they were before.

      IMO, a mascot will need to have four things to be on the same level of those guys:

      - A uncommon and fun mix of ideas and game design;

      - An appealing character design;

      - An interesting world;

      - Tendencies from the current years.

      @Strickerx5 eh idk I think that was literally Sonic's main goal since it's inception

      @Tracker_TD now you're getting it.

      @Dejimon11What I mean is, I don’t think any company ever went in on a game mascot thinking that they could leverage it in other genres.

      Like I doubt anyone at Sega had something like Sonic Chronicles anywhere on their radar back then lol.

      Pretty sure you meant Mario. Sonic and Mega Man. Crash was never at their level of appeal. Still decent, but not THAT high.

      crash vs Mario vs sonic | Consolle

      Crash was the de-facto mascot of the Playstation; he was absolutely on-line with, if not well beyond Mega Man, and I say that as someone who far, far prefers MM to Crash. Hell, nowadays I'd argue he's jumped back to the kind of popularity Sonic used to enjoy, thanks to the wildfire success of N.Sane.

      Mega Man honestly isn't as popular as many people make it out to be. With Crash at least you can say he was easily recognizable in the 90s and considered to the playstation mascot. And apparently was more popular than Sonic in Japan.

      There are still mascots that create multimedia franchises, they just aren't really cartoon characters

      @Waveshocker Sigma Uhhhh yeah he was....  Critically acclaimed trilogy  that sold extremely well,to the point where the remakes sold over 10 million units.  Popular enough to the point he was considered a major playstations icon, had a kart racer that topped most of Mario's efforts, and plus he was one the few western characters to be massive in Japan.

      Saying Mario/Sonic/Mega Man were THE platforming trio in the 90s is like saying Call of Duty/Battlefield/Gal Gun are the THE top FPS games right now
