  1. So who do you not want to see as Smash DLC and why?

    1. KHCast

Though will say, even if bubsy did get it, like, it’s not like I’d be mad or annoyed or anything or be whining about how he didn’t deserve to get in. There’s 6 characters in the pass, and every character will have their fans. Someone will be happy they’re in. Plus, as long as that character is fun, that’s ultimately what matters in my eyes. That’s why I find it honestly kinda a waste to talk about who you don’t want, cause like, is that really gonna turn you off the game if that character got in?

@Diogenes tbf Sora unlike a lot of the other ones is more of a action game with light JRPG elements. I think they could diversify him mechanically enough to feel different from other rpg reps. Aesthetically though fair, though personally the “anime character” issue never really bothered me much.

    2. JosepHenry

.... Rex from XC2. Or anyone from that game except from Mythra and Mythra ALONE.

    3. Sean

I can't really think of anything tbh. There's characters I want more than others obviously but I'm down for being surprised by whoever they pick. I already got what I wanted multiple times.

    4. PublicEnemy1

I don't want any of the mainstream picks like Sora or Geno.

I want them to pull some more obscure or unexpected picks.

    5. Stay at Home Ultima

      Stay at Home Ultima

      Minecraft Steve

      Those two come to mind.

    6. Miragnarok

Minecraft Steve/Master Chief/Fulgore - Microsoft has enough characters with Banjo-Kazooie.

Jonesy - Jazz Jackrabbit would be a better Epic Megagames representative, and I also don't feel that Jonesy is timeless enough. This would also apply to characters such as Angry Birds and Baldi.

Sora/Guybrush Threepwood - Representing Disney would be a massive hassle and possibly even open the floodgates for Vader requests.

Scorpion/Soap/Any GTA character - Too mature and gruesome. Also, NRS has actually traumatized its animators when they were given reference material to craft the fatalities.

      Bubsy - Should be obvious.

    7. Harkofthewaa

I don't wanna see any Sony reps because they've been arrogant pricks the last two generations and don't deserve it. Likewise I don't wanna see Master Chief either, I would much rather have Doomguy. And above all, I absolutely, positively do not want any more fracking sword fighters, Fire Emblem or otherwise. We have enough of them. Seriously.

    8. KHCast

@PublicEnemy1 Why does the characters popularity among fans matter there? Shouldn’t it be weighted against the character themselves and their merits? Plus given how lukewarm “unexpected” characters like Byleth and Arms have been met with, and given Sakurai has said I believe this pass especially is meant to be a fan pleasure, I can’t see them not going for a few fan wanted picks to draw in and hype audiences. Especially given how they’ve clearly done this before with guys like Ridley, K. Rool and Banjo

    9. Chili Dawg

      Chili Dawg

      any fire emblem character

    10. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

Wouldn't really call the overall reception to ARMS "lukewarm" unless you're looking in extremely selective places.

That's way too much a stretch. Pun intended.

    11. Diogenes

tbf Sora unlike a lot of the other ones is more of a action game with light JRPG elements. I think they could diversify him mechanically enough to feel different from other rpg reps. Aesthetically though fair, though personally the “anime character” issue never really bothered me much.

i mean, i'm sure they could find a way to differentiate him mechanically, and it's not that i dislike anime. for me it's more that he's got that specific "anime jrpg" vibe than him being from a jrpg (or at least something jrpg-adjacent) or being anime in itself. y'know, the big bright anime eyes, the spiky hair, the elaborate outfit, the fancy "sword", the "power of friendship" vibes...as someone not a fan of the series, looking in from the outside, he comes off as very cliche aside from the disney stuff, which i don't really want in smash either and i don't think they'd lean hard on anyway. i really only single him out because there's a bigger push for him than for other similar characters and i find him to be especially dorky looking.

e: oh, yeah, minecraft steve is another one i'd hate to see. ugly as shit and mostly generic abilities aside from possibly the block-placing aspect. keep forgetting about him because banjo's reveal pretty much killed expectations of him getting in.

    12. KHCast

I guess it wasn’t so much ARMS itself, moreso it’s timing. It being right after Byleth seemed to rub a lot of people online the wrong way, especially given the lack of Smash news.

@Diogenes fair. So the compromise then is clearly

    13. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

Oh you bet that Byleth was the absolute main source of lukewarm feelings.

Seriously, that reveal was really horribly timed.

To the point where even Minecraft Steve would've been a better showing, it was that badly timed.

    14. KHCast

Minecraft will always be the franchise Id day definitely should be represented in Smash, but should get repped moreso as a stage/Assist Trophy since that prob would do a better job at repping it

Oh also I don’t want to see Jonesy from Fortnite. Just...ugh, if you’re gonna rep a battle royale, I’d rather it be Apex which has a better pool of interesting characters

    15. Sean

Oh I just thought of one. Earthworm Jim because Doug is a scumbag

    16. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

@Sean Eh? Does this have to do with the new Intellivision?

    17. Sean

      Racist homophobic fucktwit.

    18. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

Okay....I feel like I'm missing something here.  Is he the creator of Earthworm Jim?

    19. Dejimon11

Does Doug even own the rights to that IP anymore? I thought he sold it

    20. Sean

Yeah but even if he didn't own EWJ I don't want to be reminded of his existence when playing Smash

    21. Strickerx5

Bubsy, Bandana Dee, any other FE character, Classic Sonic, any new gen Pokemon, and any other Mario character that isn't Geno.

Half of these franchises already have enough rep and the other selections are just... please no.

    22. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

When it comes to the ARMS itself, I'm dreading that the rumors are real that it'll be Spring Boy with Hero/B. Jr. alts. That'd be a letdown cause-

      1. It'd be a disservice to the individual fighters of the original game where having different proportions and play styles was their entire point. In fact, one of the main draws of fighters as a whole is how there are several characters that play differently. (Clones don't count) Could you imagine Ryu having alts of not just Ken, but Chun Li, Guile, Sagat, Akuma and Zangief, for instance???

      2. It's an Assist Trophy promoted to playable: A.K.A a slap in the face to those wanted Waluigi, Shadow, Skull Kid, Bomberman, Issac, Shovel Knight, etc before they've be confirmed Assist Trophies, thus would be just begging for backlash. Alternatively, this would imply to me this fighter pass will just be an "AT's Second Chance" pack, and I also don't want ATs becoming playable in general. It throws the whole surprise factor of when someone shows up that never saw in Smash before out the window.

    23. dbzfan7

Waluigi and Geno. The former while having genuine followers feels like a meme pick like Sans Undertale. The latter I don't really care about at all and feels oddly more popular for people having want him in Smash than his own actual game is.

    24. Won't Stop, Just Go

      Won't Stop, Just Go

I dont have a lot of answers to this question because I genuinely believe this team can make a worthwhile addition out of anything at this point, but waluigi is the epitome of 'we just want to make this happen because meme' that's been dominating smash discussion since Smash 4 came out. any friendship anime boy or happy platformer mascot is welcome instead. Literally talk about any video game or character you care sincerely about instead no matter how much of a long shot it is and I'll be with you because holy shit.

    25. Perkilator

Spring Man (at least not for this game)

      ...Yep, that's about it.

  2. Screen_Shot_2020-06-16_at_3.06.18_PM.png

This is how Twitter acts like whenever Nintendo tweets something out

  3. I can sort of understand Twip being cynical about the series especially with how meme happy it's been for the last 5 years(and every livestream they announce merch for some of the funny parts of the shorts) but Christ dude he really is a contrarian that loves to start shit.

    1. Strickerx5

Only saw some of the beginning tweets in the morning but from what I did read, I do slightly see where he’s coming from. Thing is, this isn’t a problem with the shorts themselves. This is more of a direct problem with SoA that the shorts just so happen to fall under.

It’s the Twitter team that chooses to only release memes in the absence of actual news. I think people are just getting tired of it after this gap lasting so long.

That and, from what I can gather, Twip can come off as a bit of character. I’m not too familiar with them though so I’ll stop there.

  4. I realize that my issue with TLOU2 isn't the game itself-besides the behind the scenes development and that one "clip her wings" trailer. I do respect Naught Dog for trying to push medium forward and offer an experience that only can be told through video games.

What annoys me is the way that some reviewers/journalist praise it like they're actually embarrassed that they play video games for a living and try to come off as pretentious as hell for validation within their peers who have other careers.

  5. Hopefully one day nintendo will stop being hostile towards fan games and rom hacks.

Not really sure how it’s affecting their brand like some people keep defending it especially when companies like Valve, Capcom and SEGA are fine with this stuff.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Of all the things SEGA can still do what Nintendon't... One hunts fan makers down, the other gives them a job.

Look guys ArIn says he likes sonic so that means we shouldn't hate on him. Completely ignoring why he gets crapped on by the fanbase constantly.

Like you don't have to like every aspect of the franchise and every game lord knows I certainly don't especially the stuff that a lot of people love. But hooo boy this guy

    1. KHCast

Looking at those comments it seems the general consensus and accepted norm now is that people not a fan of Arin and how he often covers Sonic are unreasonable haters and take things he says and does out of context...I mean what? I’ve seen some genuine concerns and reasons for not enjoying Arins coverage and Sega’s insistence on using him as a influencer

    2. Nix

I remember reading some Twitter thread awhile back where everyone managed to convince themselves that Arin was the one who ruined Sonic and turned the series into a complete joke. I was confused then, and I'm still confused now.

Like the past two decades of Sonic making a damn fool of itself never happened.

    3. Dejimon11

Nah they happened and that was all SEGA’s doing. I’m just annoyed at the fact that he keeps getting hired when he says stuff like the series isn’t good and pretty much hates every game he played besides Forces. Then again again he apparently was promoting Bloodstained despite the fact that he doesn’t like Metroidvanias so idk anymore.

  7. The sprite work for the Alex Kid remake looks like one of those fan mock ups that you wish were a real thing come to life.

    1. Balding Spider

      Balding Spider

Well it started out as a fan game before Sega approved it.

    2. Dejimon11

So like did SEGA come to them or they just sent our a pitch?

    3. Balding Spider

      Balding Spider

I'm guessing the former, the dev team was working on this for some years prior to Sega getting involved.

  8. Alright beat Ratchet and Clank.....meh. Hopefully I'll have a better time with the original PS2 game. IDK maybe the PS2 era platformers just aren't my thing and I'm the N64/PS1 games.

    1. Chili Dawg

Tools of Destruction, Crack In Time, Into The Nexus

ps3 saga is the peak, especially crack in time

quest for booty is in there but it's filler, ya can skip it

    2. Marcello

The PS2 games are the best ones. Lots of dumb decisions after them.

    3. Operationgamer17

Guys, if he can’t get into the PS4 game, he probably can’t get into the other either.

    4. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

Yeah the PS2 games are overall more fun than the PS4 one for sure.

  9. This final boss is absolutely terrible holy crap.

    1. Kuzu

    2. Your Vest Friend

      Your Vest Friend

      Probably Ratchet and Clank.

  10. Yeah Ratchet and Clank PS4 really isn't great.

    1. Polkadi~☆

The gameplay is a good return to form, in my opinion, harking back to the PS2 era. But everything else, eehh... Not what I'd expect from a Ratchet & Clank game.

also i want 60fps back come on man

    2. Dejimon11

I haven't played any games besides size matters but we don't talk about it. The gameplay really isn't doing it for me. Shooting doesn't have the same oof as it does with most shooters I've played(which are very limited mind you) but the enemies don't seem to react properly, the game hoards you with a lot of them and it doesn't feel like a game of skill but an endurance test. And my God the boss fights are absolutely terrible

    3. Dr. Detective Mike

      Dr. Detective Mike

As the only Ratchet and Clank game I've ever played I honestly thought it was pretty excellent.

There's a lot about it that I wish Sonic would do more. Gave me that visceral feeling of being a badass and exploring locations AND doing it while feeling appropriately fast and furious. It's also heart droppingly beautiful.

    4. Ryannumber1gamer

I think the gameplay is fantastic, it's just everything else (story and music) is lame as hell.

However, I would absolutely encourage you not to let the PS4 game stop you from the series. I'd recommend maybe picking up the PS3 trilogy and giving that a try. 2 and 3 especially are 60fps and are very polished fun shooters.

    5. Tornado

It's pretty ridiculous just how blatantly every facet of it was seemingly run through focus groups before it came out; I assume to make it more appealing as a tie-in to the movie.

  11. Happy belated birthday

    Welp Skullgirls is fucked!

    1. KHCast

Gamers don’t deserve to be treated like normal people when they say shit like that, holy fuck

    2. JosepHenry

i can't fucking believe he ruined skullgirls like this. what the fuck.

    3. Ferno

Wanted to buy and get into the game for years but now its like, yeah I'll wait a little longer

    4. Sean

      This fucking clown...

    5. JosepHenry

He didn't have to FUCKING SAY IT

What's next??? "I'm sorry for saying the hard R"??? FUCK YOU.

    6. Dejimon11

      He posted an apology

    7. KHCast

Oh he’s pulling a pewdipie. Nobody saw that coming

    8. Sean

Reading the apology, it seems like he means it. Based on what I know about Skullgirls' development, it's bizarre hearing him spout a horrible insensitive joke such as this, so I'm willing to believe he's not a bad person. Absolutely do not blame anyone choosing not to support him or the game after this though.

    9. JosepHenry

Well, that was fast. Fast to apologise when you notice you said something that ruined your reputation in a flash.

      Also this apology is nothing

@SeanIn the replies is implied he did stupid stuff before.... so maybe he is just stupid

    10. KHCast

Gamers, game developers, streamers, etc find themselves so often in these situations, at what point do we acknowledge that the gaming community as a whole has a inherent problem that’s been institutionalized? Cause you can only say say shit and then quickly apologize so many times before it starts to feel more like “sorry I got caught” more than “I’m genuinely sorry and hate that I said this”

    11. Kuzu

This ain't the first time he's said something stupid.

    1. Monkey Destruction Switch

      Monkey Destruction Switch

I hear a lot of good things about Hat in Time, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

    2. PC the Hedgehog

      PC the Hedgehog

A Hat In Time, Poi, Super Mario Odyssey, and New Super Lucky's Tale are all fantastic.

    3. Sean

Mirror's Edge when it's not being an atrocious brawler/shooter.

    4. Maxtiis

I feel like I would list off things that you're already aware of. I liked a lot of more old school ones like Gex 2 and 3, Jet Set Radio and JSR Future are both unique platformers, Mystical Ninja on N64 is like a Zelda game with platforming. They're a bit jank but I liked the Tak games that Nickelodeon made back in the 6th console gen.

    5. The Deleter

      The Deleter

Defunct is a neat little game that's usually on sale for .83 cents pretty often; it's can be frustratingly slow at times but the focus on physics ala a Sonic without a spindash can be pretty fun to mess around with

    6. Jango

    7. Solister

Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Forces.

Have I suggested you the Sonic franchise?

What about the best 3D platformer mascot

The big announcement is tomorrow. This is likely something else.

Unless they chose to unveil this a day early, I'm not sure.

  19. Today’s my Mom’s birthday. Usually I would get her a cake but ya know...recent events and because the ones they sell at my job aren’t good I bought her apple pie because she really loves the ones they sell at my job

    3. Dejimon11

      Thank you for your concerns

  20. Happy birthday buddy!

    1. Ferno

      Thanks alot Deji!

  21. Thinking about yeah why are so many people confident that an SA1 remake is coming? Like there's no evidence or anything to support it literally all we got was Iizuka talking about how he saw the technical flaws in the game and would like to remake it a few years ago.

    1. Diogenes

i don't think there's anything to it beyond remakes being a relatively common thing at this point and SA being a game that's generally liked and old/janky enough to "need" a remake. i wouldn't be surprised if they do jump on the bandwagon and announce a remake, but i don't see any real reason to expect it.

    2. Strickerx5

This series has a real nag for going after current trends. Remakes are happening all over so, tbh, I don't know why people are going out of their way to say it won't happen.

(and I know it's been directly proven to not be the case but it really does feel like Sega has put more of an emphasis on Adventure call-outs recently than before. it's a baseless feeling, but one that myself and apparently many others do have nonetheless)

Personally though, I just find the idea to be a much more telling test than seeing them fumble with something new currently. Not only do we get a direct comparison to really dig in just as how far gone they currently are, but it'll also really show where their heads are at in multitude of categories as SA1 did a lot of shit (story events, game mechanics, level scale, ect.). If they can't make a competent remake of it... there's no hiding imo.

No "it only actually had a year in development" or "they were trying something new" excuses.

also, i just like adventure, sue me

    3. Lord-Dreamerz

There has been lots of hints for the last couple years that Sonic Team MIGHT be interesting in doing a Sonic Adventure remake. Saying folk are seeing something that isn't there is silly.

    4. Dejimon11

I like adventure as well it's in my top Sonic game and I would love nothing more than for it to be remade. I just feel like we're just grasping at straws and all the "adventure teases" aren't really teases at all.

    5. Lord-Dreamerz

It doesn't personally matter to me if they do it or not, i have nothing against it for sure. But i seem enough hints or even "evidence" to say there be a good chance for it. I do mean more then a few signs also.

  22. Not sure why people think that you can't tell an interesting Mario story that isn't an RPG. It's not like they're plenty of characters though the series history that can could use.

Should clarify in terms of other mediums like a comic book or a movie. You can tell more than "Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser"

    1. Strickerx5

You can tell interesting stories in the games. Hell, they have before with Galaxy.

Thing is, they literally just don't want to most of the time.

    2. Blacklightning

You can, Shigeru just won't let you. Even what little we got in Mario Galaxy had to be practically hidden from him until almost the verge of going gold. I get that gameplay always comes first and all, but we've been doing the same song and dance for 37 years now and it's gotten extremely silly.

    3. Celestia

I don't think anyone is actually under the impression you literally can't do more with the stories, especially in adaptations, but I understand the concern that Miyamoto and other Nintendo higher ups will rein it in.

I don't expect that to happen with the movie though, if only because of necessity and expectations (which I assume is why the RPGs were more detailed...uh, at first).

    4. Dejimon11

@Blacklightning the funny thing is with Odyssey it was literally the first time Miyamoto backed off and literally let them do whatever the hell that they wanted and look how that turned out

    5. Plumbers_Helper

As a long time Mario fan on the internet, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear someone say that on an internet forum. I think people are often too quick to latch on to Shigeru Miyamoto's view of story in video games, ironically something he helped popularize. I'm cautiously optimistic for that upcoming animated Mario movie.

Super Mario Adventures was of course great, but I got so much enjoyment from the cartoons as a kid. So many hero characters growing up were always tall, buff dudes that felt larger then life, but Mario was always special to me because he was just a regular guy: A poor plumber from Brookyln fighting for good because no one else will. I always found that inspiring, as corny and badly animated as the Mario cartoons were - they are what made me a fan of Mario in the first place. I didn't get a Super Nintendo until after the cartoons disappeared from television.

Brooklyn Bound was always one of my favorite episodes, it dealt with how Mario & Luigi felt about being lost in another world and having to fight war after war with no way to get home...and what they would do if they had that chance to go home again. I wish the series would have been more like that episode, focusing more on the characters' thoughts and feelings then on parody after parody. I'm such a dork for the Mario cartoons that I even have one of those bootleg plushes that resemble Bowser's appearance in the cartoons.

Sorry for gushing about the cartoons, they've always been a childhood favorite of mine.

    6. Dr. Mechano

      Dr. Mechano

I'd say platformers can and have told interesting stories.

      Galaxy as people have mentioned.

Sunshine's story was simple, but still charming and more complex than just "jump on goombas, beat bowser, wahoo" by giving Bowser Jr. his own misguided motivations in the game.

I'd argue Odyssey had a decent story too. It's goofy, sure, but it's full of character and even has direct continuity nods to Donkey Kong of all things, with Mario going back to the town of his very first game.

The thing about these examples is, they just have less space to tell a story than RPGs do. RPGs by their very nature are loaded with text, which gives the designers more time to flesh out the characters and world. Mario stories can be engaging and fun outside of RPGs, but there's a reason the RPGs (at least, the older ones) stand head and shoulders above the rest of the series when it comes to storytelling; the conventions of the genre simply allow more room for it.

      I couldn't agree more.

I've come to terms with Nintendo's stance on the Mario Bros.' birth. But I grew up with the Brooklyn backstory and in my opinion it is 100% more interesting than Yoshi's Island; It makes Mario and Luigi just a pair of regular joes who stumble into heroism, as opposed to being a couple of magically destined babies who were prophesied from birth to be heroes. I feel like it also gave them a slight edge, a bit of a culture, a sort of tangible way that they were different from the other denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. As people who didn't grow up in a whimsical land of magic, they'd have a different perspective on the world than the other characters, and I always found that interesting.

I really would like to think that, shortly after their early childhood in the Mushroom Kingdom, the brothers moved to the Metro Kingdom - where they opened a plumbing shop (Mario Bros. Plumbing was in the artbook for Odyssey, so it was at least on Nintendo's minds!), Mario briefly dated Pauline, the events of the original Donkey Kong, Wrecking Crew, and Mario Bros. happened, etc. - before they heard about Bowser attacking their childhood home and boogied back to the Mushroom Kingdom to lend a hand. At least this way, Mario's and Luigi's Brooklyn upbringing can have a kind of broad-strokes basis in the game universe.
