Berry we both know shit wouldn't have changed that much. If Sonic Team were being forced to release a game under a tight schedule and Naka being stronghold to make Sonic games for the rest of his career yeh nah

      Polkadi~☆

Considering that Yuji Naka enjoyed making other games that weren't Sonic too, and was in a position in the 2000s where he couldn't make anything BUT Sonic games, that was going to burn him out and create worse games.

      Dejimon11

More like "modes that are interesting". World of Light is trash. Spirit battles are boring. The only major improvement Smash Ultimate had over it's previous ones is that the Classic mode is fun for the first time in a long time. Give me an adventure mode like Melee or subspace anyday. I'd also would like a proper break the targets but I know why that's not happening.

I want to see what comes next, what happens in a game post mania. I don't care if the game before was bad, I am here because i like Sonic and I want it to suceed. And so far, the signs of a restruture on the Sonic IP are big. Call me stupid in a world of cynism, but I am looking forward to what comes next. And I see no point in coming back for something I would not have interest on anymore and or has given up on.

maybe since it's been about 3 years since the last mainline game? not like it's anything tragic, if it weren't for the fact that the fans are sick and tired of sonic becoming a meme. though I like some of the memes the sonic twitter account make (but then you got sonic flossing and I cringe inside), in fact some of them are legitimately funny.

it would be nice if the person who mans the Twitter Account toned down on the memes and jokes, and probably do more than just memes as well. like wouldn't it be more nice for them to make tweets that are, I don't know... something a little more earnest & respectful to the sonic brand, maybe? like probably doing some memes that don't go overboard like the cat meme, showing some nice fanart from passionate fans? making snarky jokes about certain events. and when it's ready, maybe show teasers, sneak peeks and/or trailers for the next sonic game? I don't know, probably just me, I don't know if that would make the fans stop complaining about it, but it's something.

It's ok to look forward to it but the way I've seen people act like they're in a desperate need of a new game right now. @Dejimon11 A lot of fans from both of those franchises are just way too used to getting games on a yearly, if not less, basis and can't cope with the longer wait times.

      Miraculous Milo

I don't get the desperation either. I get that the radio silence that's been going on after TSR's release is deafening; but unless ST is mentioned to have little to do with designing the next game, I can't relate to the hysteria.

    11. sonicfan619

      sonicfan619

It's just curiousity because things are a lot different now for the IP and platforming genre.

The movie almost revived the franchise into mainstream, plus you got other non-Mario platformers returning and showing an emergence like Crash 4 and hell even Ballan Wonderworld that arguably look more  promising than any 3D Sonic from the last 19 years. We know Sega sucks but a lot of us still hope Sonic gets his shit together and doesn't fall behind newer or revived platformers

    12. Jack out of the comics!

      Jack out of the comics!

I don't follow, desperation... I think that's an overstatement, people are just tired for the lack of news after the movie. Forces was a disappointment, a major one of course, does that mean we should give up on Sonic? If anything, the fact that we haven't had a good game since Mania implies further that we are long overdue for another solid Sonic experience.

@iambitter21 It's more of a shot on how Sega is handling Sonic than their franchises. If they didn't suck they would do something to follow through with their movie hype and at least gave some teaser or even a title announcement without any footage. But nope Sega are just not smart.

That's not even going into how they sabatoge development halfway into production that gives us rushed, half-finished disasters

Remember: Mania also came out in 2017 and sold hotcakes.

@Jack out of the comics! There are so many other franchises where fans wished they'd get the amount of attention and games Sonic does.

I'll say it as many times as I need to: Some of you need to actually play other video games and give Sonic a rest for a bit. @Dejimon11absolutely, and like aside from this loud minority who can't shut up about it, we aren't really "desperate", as long as it is a good game, sega can take all of the time of the world to think, rethink, and polish it into the brim. I myself I am playing a load of other games that have nothing to do with sonic meanwhile, and even so when I want to play sonic i just play past games since i have so many to choose from.

Nothing just everything that we've seen doesn't look all that great. The character designs I'm not too keen on especially with Hawkeye.

  7. I just want to know with the classic vs modern stuff do people also hate the designs of the characters or is it only the quality of the games?

    1. kenn_k

      kenn_k

As far as I can tell, it's just the games. I don't really think I've ever seen anyone really complain about modern's design. I was around when it happened, really young tho, and I'm sure some people were like "WTF?" but I don't remember it causing a huge backlash or anything. I mean, hell, people started trying to imitate the art style and we all loved SA, SA2, Heroes... It was when they started releasing unfinished/terrible games and experimenting with all these gimmicks... That's when fans started to get upset

    2. Diogenes

      Diogenes

honestly looking at some of the comments that project hero has gotten for its change in style i couldn't even guess what exactly people are actually concerned about.

personally i'm much more concerned with how the games play than the designs; i do prefer the classic designs a bit but i don't really care if a fangame uses the modern designs as long as it's a decent model and not, like, gross lanky '06 sonic or something.

    3. JezMM

      JezMM

As far as I saw MYSELF, people were upset because they thought they were gonna get a "good"/physics-driven 3D Sonic game using Sonic's full modern moveset (quick-step, slide, stomp, drift and all that PLUS what classic Sonic is known for). As a fan of Unleashed, sure I'd like that too, but if the designer can't get them to work and make sense, or can make an equally fun game with a simpler/more elegant control scheme, I totally endorse it.

As far as I'm aware, we still don't actually know what modern Sonic elements have been kept despite the character redesign.

    4. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

At this point it's sort of both I guess. Like, before it was just the fact that there were pitfalls the classic style of gameplay always seemed to fall into that would always annoy me enough to end a run of any of them at a certain point. I just rather not see them repeated in 3D where it can be helped as, at that point, they're usually much more problematic.

In Project Hero's case specifically, I had liked the blend of elements they had going from across the series spectrum. Personally, to hear of them axing most of that seemingly in favor of gameplay systems I'm already weary of is the more concerning part here. Again, I'll hold off until we actually see what they're doing but it does just feel like they had something great already and were ready to move onto the next steps.

As far as the designs themselves go, I gotta be honest here. I'm just sort of at the point where if it's not straight CD Toei Sonic or Tyson drawing it, I just generally prefer the Modern design overall. Sega's usual renders of Classic just don't hit home to me at this point. Especially the 2D art they tend to use on merch as it screams more Felix or Mickey than Sonic. I know that's what the character is based on but I'd like more distinction here.

Also not crazy regarding how these models are often presented in 3D. It's always hard for people to transition them well off of the 2D plane that they were designed for. Honestly, I can count on one hand the number of times where the design didn't look awkward in 3D for me. None of them outside the format of a set test animation.

Now with all this, please don't get me wrong, I don't hate the design at all (this is more of comparing two things I actually generally like overall), but if I had to choose between the two... this is just my 2 cents.

Really with me though, it's more about the style the designs are presented in. Like lord knows I ain't one for the Heroes renders.

Honestly, it'd be neat to be able to just toggle classic/modern skins for the characters; either as a whole or even on a per-character basis if you wanted to mix and match. It'd be a ton of extra work though, so I understand why that wouldn't be in the cards.

    3. D.H

      D.H

Yeah Sonic as a whole gets a bad rep, but it doesn't help that some people who are fans of the same franchise will point the finger of blame at other fans for "ruining the series." Whether it's some Classicfans going at Modernfans, or vice versa.

And SEGA's handling of the situation over the last few years hasn't really helped matters.

Samsho getting another season was also new, I think? Also the expected GG reveals.

    2. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

SamSho's season pass would of been cool if they had shown off a character rather than "yeah it's happening" and the lack of KOF info sucks. SC6 also showed off a new character as well

Capcom pretty much had an announcement of an announcement for their tournament next week when they'll show off the next character. But hey Kenny Omega is going to be there so it sorta balances it out.

The weirdest part about all of this is that they announced online tournaments which is cool but they're missing the biggest problem about the whole thing. Their net codes are straight up garbage so there's no point

  11. Trying not to piss everybody off with this take. I'm not a fan of some cartoons nowadays having super simplistic design and a similar art style. And not the "cal arts" style that's been meme'd to death, i know why it's done for more fluid animation so I won't harp on it too much. And yeah I know it's always been a thing ever since the 80's *glares at He-Man and Thunder Cats*

Adult Cartoons trying to emulate the success of Rick and Morty and Family Guy tho can stop.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I'm categorically not a fan of the "cal arts" style. It's as much a stylistic trend as it a way to manage production. I understand all of that, but I just don't like way that it looks. Noodly limbs, thick black outlines, simple shapes, sausage mouth and flat colours... Yeah, no thanks. I look forward to seeing where 2D animation is in say ten-years or so.

Look, I get it that "cal arts" is an over simplification and I'm not an animation guy so articulating exactly what I mean is pretty difficult. The broad strokes of the cal arts meme convey the point quite effectively though. If you don't watcb a ton of animation or aren't a creator yourself, the meme speak volumes.

      Berry Xmas

I'm well aware that you're aware it's not all the same. Regarding those that are, it just falls under the ongoing fact: Business loves to imitate what's popular.

In the 2000s, it was that every cartoon had to look anime-esque cause of Teen Titans, Avatar, etc.

The 90s, many kid toons wanted to be as gross and weird as Ren and Stimpy and many adult toons wanted to be Simpsons.

80s, it was actions shows made to sell toys that ran the show and they have the same realistic human look; need I go on?

Originality is hard and risky. Emulation is easy and profitable.

    8. Emperor Robrainiac

      Emperor Robrainiac

      @Blue Blood

I recall you saying you don't care for cartoons somewhere else... How come?

I'm not asking because "OMG CARTOONS ARE NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN QUIT TRYING TO ACT EDGY AND MATURE RAAAAHHH" like most cartoon or mr enter fans tend to be. It's moreso because I've been around so many people who love animation, it's a bit uncommon to me to see someone say they don't care for it.

    9. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Because I just don't like them very much. Children's cartoons were never my thing, not even when I was a kid. I watched some, but not intently and I've never been nostalgic for them. Especially noe trying to watch programs about children is strange. It even extends to games tbh; child main characters tend to get on my nerves. Adult cartoons, like Family Guy or Rick and Morty... Sure, I like a small handful of them. But then you've got crap like F is For Family too. Generally I just don't find cartoons to be appealing whatever they are. Animation just isn't for me. It's not a blanket rule.

One thing that I've always found really, really stand-out and strange online since I first joined Internet forums back in 2002/3 was the number of people who are so massively into cartoons and animation. At around ten years old I was under the impression that cartoons were for children and should be grown out of as people get older (adult cartoons ala The Simpsons or Futurama aside), so it was a bit of a culture shock. It's something that I've never come across once in the real world. It's this entire realm I'm only aware of because of communities like this one where people seem to be largely animation fans. If I stopped browsing online for video games, cartoons could cease to exist and I wouldn't notice.

Just to clarify, I don't think that cartoons should be grown out of or anything like that. That's just the impression I had as a child and I still only know people online who watch cartoons designed to be watched by children.

      Also who is Mr Enter?

    10. Emperor Robrainiac

      Emperor Robrainiac

Mr. Enter is a animation critic on youtube that people either love or hate. He's rather infamous for getting really angry at certain cartoons... like not fake angry, but legitimately and uncomfortably angry. He's of the opinion of cartoons of all kinds should not be seen as just children's media.

Theres a lot of reasons why that is and some drama surrounding him and i havent watched him in a while to see if he's still like this. But a portion of his fanbase can be pretty vocal to put it lightly, which was what i was refering to.

    1. Berry Xmas

      Berry Xmas

Well, when the man who was in charge of what would've rollback net code's greatest showcase this year was found out a molester and the lead designer behind one of rollback's leading titles (Skullgirls) is pretty scummy as well, these types of fighting games as of recently have likely been given a bad name.

It's also unfair to blame rejecting rollback on people who had nothing to do with it however, so maybe they've begun incorporating that stuff before. Then again, they probably won't bother with that anyway. Western developers are the ones that are calling for and producing more cross compatible games, and it's not too often you find Japanese devs trying to adapt whatever thing is trending overseas.

    2. Dejimon11

SNK has experimented with rollback recently with Mark of the Wolves. And Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid has rollback net code and cross play with every current gen system and PC. Non of these companies have any excuses now.

Nintendo mentions every Direct this year that scheduling has obviously been impacted by COVID-19, so when he says "if Nintendo would just say something we'd understand" I can't buy it because there already isn't an understanding.

    3. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

The fact that he even compared the Microsoft showcase as "look at all these games that are coming out" baffled the hell out of me. Like how many of them were gameplay trailers? How many of them are actually coming out this year? And everything that devs have talked about after the showcase Microsoft isn't ready to launch this console at all.

Jury might still be out on that FWIK, as many were suspecting Nintendo literally had little planned for 2020 to begin with, while the COVID left them able to give out even less. The more pessimistic types say that 2021 will even worse of a drought for them, if not everything else. The later statement I feel is from people who believe the epidemic will get worse rather than better and that things won't start getting cleaned up by then, which I disagree.

I'll give everything till' September/October till I permit myself to press my Panic Button.

At the risk of being the contrarian/Arlo fanboy/Nintendo hater/whatever you want to call it, I can't really say I was put off by the points he was making. Don't agree with a fair amount of them, but I do think the overall point he was making has some standing.

Nintendo is a company that heavily relies on first parties. Like, love what Microsoft is showing or not, the fact that they're the butt of every "no exclusives" joke and are still putting out more content and updates than Nintendo is telling. Sure both Sony and Microsoft basically just listed a bunch of games with no release date but, at the same time, it ain't like Nintendo doesn't do that either.

Though idk, personally I largely just haven't paid much mind to what Nintendo has and/or hasn't done recently due to the many other games both out and coming out. If they said they're not ready to show shit then people need to accept that and move on.

      Spoiler

like real talk some of the people I've seen obviously haven't had one of their favorite series go without a single "dry spell" (if you can call not having one mario game every half a year that) and it fucking shows

also, now that I think about it, a new Pokemon Snap is a thing. shut up arlo lol

    8. Wraith

      Wraith

A pandemic is a perfectly fine reason to have a content drought. Sony are Microsoft are straining themselves to put content out anyway because they have consoles dropping this year and want them to release them before the economy takes a huge downturn. This isn't an admirable or respectable angle to take. Games need more time and developers need more support under these circumstances, But Sony and MS are putting their financial interests first and Nintendo's fans are pressuring them to do the same

  16. Nintendo fans are acting miserable right now because there's nothing to look forward to atm.

  17. I really do hope that going forward SEGA won't rely on past stages as a selling point.

With Sonic 4 which was labeled as a sequel every level was just homogenized versions of levels from Sonic 1 and 2.

That Generations' entire point and at the time felt like a celebration of the series.

Mania while good and I understand the circumstances as to why they did it, that was the major complaint a lot of people had with it even some of reviews.

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Honestly, I think that’s going to be one of the few things they pick up on for the next game. It’s a complaint that’s easy to understand, most have, and something that both Forces and Mania got.

Like if we see them bring back a level like GHZ in the next game, that’s going to be the ultimate sign to pack it in.

    5. JezMM

      JezMM

I'm fine with it as long as it's just an odd level or two AND it's one that we've never seen in that level of graphical fidelity before.  Like, if Death Egg had been the only returning stage in Forces, that would've been a pretty cool little bit of fanservice (although to be fair that's being generous considering we've had different versions/areas of the Death Egg shown in modern visuals before via Sonic All-Stars Racing/Sonic 4 Ep 2/Generations).

    6. Zaysho

      Zaysho

I'd rather it feel like they just have a reason to revisit. But Sega really only cares about making surface level effort in Sonic and not about writing decent stories and designing the game accordingly.

    7. JezMM

      JezMM

I guess I will say if they MUST do it for budgetary constraints, at least make it look significantly different in an interesting way.  Green Hill but still daytime and bland sandy desert scenery everywhere wasn't interesting, but Chemical Plant with the more dramatic lighting and snowy infilteration vibe of Space Port or the contrast of going from icy waters outside to an almost warm feeling inside for Network Terminal, they were pretty okay I guess.  Just ALONGSIDE Green Hill and Death Egg, with Sonic Mania so recently featuring the very same first and second stage, repeating Generations doing the same, was too much.

We'd be lucky if any of their big anniversary titles can even make it that year at this rate.

BOTW2 may still be a ways off, MP4 might've just gotten to back to it's point in development before being restarted from scratch, it's unknown Pokemon has anything in big store after their S&S period cools off asides from Snap and Unite, and Sonic?  Part of me doesn't want to know what he's doing for his 30th.

      @Your Vest Friend

Donkey Kong and anything before 1985 does not exist to Nintendo. Mario's only turning 35
