Well Johnny ruled out doing Endless Possibility years ago at SoS 2010 I believe, so thats gone. Though Jun did play it once but the vocalist was...... really really shit so we don't talk about that.

I think they've been generally done doing covers of main themes for a while now. Honestly, I'm just thankful that the two still have a working relationship as seen in TSR. Had me worried there for a bit with the silence.

Though I'd be completely down if they ever decide to change that stance.

    4. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

@Strickerx5 to be fair up until Forces it had been a while since we got a vocal theme for a sonic game. They did remix open your heart for generations, made a few covers and performed for the 25th anniversary so i knew they were still a thing.

I hoped they would do a cover but it never happend. 😢

  2. Man the Naughty Dog drama was literally the perfect opportunity for people who just hated to company for various reasons and just dog pile on them huh?

  3. Every sonic video essay now will have at least 1 of the following

    -mentions the series history

    -talks about the dark ages

    -doesn't like the current direction

    -Mario is basic/bland or bad

    -Writing is bad

-Feels like the world is against them for being a sonic fan

i'm glad that fans are the main ones driving discussion around the series now but so many of these essays are redundant. if you've seen one in the past 5 years you've seen em all

It's pretty much why I can't watch sonic tubers like the game apologist.

It seems like a delayed response if anything. I imagine it was something on the back of people's minds but after Forces and the lack of info it leaped to the front. The rants set off a wave from other people and so on. A lot of the stuff complained about actually happened in the early 2010s, but back then people didn't want to go against the mainstream opinion that Colors and Generations were great and that Sonic's Twitter was great. Now that time has gone onward and we've seen others that hoped things like "they'll surely bring back Tails and Knuckles once Sonic is right!" have faded. Once is a misstep, twice is a pattern. It's easy to go "Sure Lost World was different, but the next game will be better!". Then after waiting for years fans got Forces and reception was mostly negative again.
tl;dr 2000s fans are in the same place Classic fans were in the late 2000s/early 2010s

@McGroose Mario himself is bland. And solid as his games may be, you can quite reasonably call the NSMB series and 3DL/W bland.

i wouldn't say mario is bland. he's not exciting, but he's got a clear happy-go-lucky kind of charm to him.

    9. Won't Stop, Just Go

      Won't Stop, Just Go

I just don't think every Sonic essay or discussion has to be an overview of the series perception. We all know people think the games are bad. More niche topics would be nice.

    10. Milo

      Milo

Besides the NSMB-derived aesthetics, bland is the last description I would use to describe 3D World :S

    11. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Really? Not one who even watch these things, I always thought they say Mario is better than Sonic and should set an example of what makes better games. I guess they all caught on that the "why can't Sonic be more like Mario" complaints aren't working as recent outputs indicate.

These guys must think the image of Mario and Sonic being together is as forbbiden of a relationship as the Tom & Jerry movie. Maybe that's why there's no real M&S platformer: they have to settle with friendly competition.

    12. Kuzu

      Kuzu

@Wraith This is what kind of irks me more than anything. People think they're saying something profound, but all they're doing is just parroting what everyone else has been saying for the past few years. It's exhausting to be honest.

  4. It's still amazing that the director of Generations is now in charge of the Olympics titles.

I mean they stuck the writer of SA2 on the first two Riders games and Storybook duo, so not too unusual for Sega.

      KHCast

Haven’t played the original, but I don’t think I’d be too far off in saying part of its appeal was how different and unique it was compared to most games at the time.

The one on the Wii I remember being pretty subpar tho

    5. Sean

      Sean

It has a fantastic soundtrack and addicting score attack-based gameplay. It's extremely short, as you can complete both kids' levels in 30 minutes, but the appeal comes from replaying levels and getting better at them.

The Saturn version is somewhat better due to other versions lacking true 360 degree movement, but the Steam version is fine if you don't have a Saturn, and it goes on sale for a dollar frequently.

    6. KHCast

All this Nights talk got me thinking about the Lost World dlc

Why did Yoshi get a full on unique level, but Nights had to reuse Windy Hill for half of it and just had reskinned bosses? =(

    7. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

Yoshi is a bigger name? Plus I guess nintendo funded the dlc

    8. DryLagoon

      DryLagoon

Figures Lost World got Zelda Yoshi and Nights DLC, and all Forces got was Episode Shadow and a Sanic tshirt. Okay I guess the Nights and Persona 5 outfits were cool too, but you get what I mean.

  7. I finally understand why people love FF7. It's been a fantastic game so far.

  8. "They should bring back sticks and infinite despite the fact they were in bad products there's nothing stopping them from being good. BTW they should never use the deadly six again because they originated from a bad game"

    1. Rusty Spy

Nothing about Infinite or the deadly six have the potential to be good.

    2. Ferno

      Ferno

They can use the deadly 6 whenever for all I care JUST USE THE OTHER 5 EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE FOR THE LOVE OF GAIA

    3. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

People mostly just like the designs of Sticks & Infinite better when it comes down to it. The Deadly 6 barely look like Sonic characters. I have nothing against any of them myself. But SEGA should only use whoever when they fit well into a piece of media and not simply shoehorn whoever into everything.

    4. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Thing is, Sticks is the only one of the group that has actually been fleshed out in any capacity. She's really the only one that should return though, ironically enough, she probably never will thanks to Boom in general.

Though really, I'm still in the mindset that you can bring back any character you want at this point as long as they're actually written well and fit the narrative. People only harp on the D6- actually let's be real here just Zavok, because he's had a lot of opportunities to be interesting and it just hasn't happened yet.

    5. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

They had a good idea with Zavok but Pontaff really played it safe. With Forces everybody was terrible in that game. I don't see anybody hating on Shadow, Chaos etc  because pf how poorly handled they were.

    6. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Shadow, Chaos, and the others have the buffer of being legacy characters at this point. They've been in a lot of material that proves that they can be great when written well.

Neither Infinite or the D6 really have that atm.

    7. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Sticks and Infinite have designs that fall in line with the series aesthetics, which is why fans are willing to give them a chance.

The Deadly Six don't look like Sonic characters, and their personalities suck. So there's nothing there for fans to latch onto.

    8. Sean

      Sean

People like Sticks and Infinite despite the badness of their games. They don't like the Deadly Six because they think they're bad characters period.

I don't like any of these characters but I don't think there's anything contradictory about these two opinions.

    9. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

As others said, Sticks and Infinite at least have designs i like. I don't like them, but like, in a spinoff i rather see infinite doing ribbon dance than Zavok

    10. Bowbowis

      Bowbowis

Infinite and Sticks both defined backstories, Sticks has a unique personality which can create new dynamics with the rest of the cast, Infinite's illusion powers are also unique and can create and fuel any number of interesting plots. The Deadly Six have no defined backstory, minimal personality, and their powers amount to controlling robots and magnetism, both of which are are already well within Eggman's purview. There's just no interesting concepts to explore there.

    11. Kuzu

      Kuzu

Well, that's not completely true; in the Japanese script, they're explicitly defined as "Oni". Could have had some good lore about that....

That being said, I don't really think Sticks or Infinite are any better; like I said, they just have designs that appeal to the fanbase better.

  9. These new idea things for Mario Maker 2 are cool but it really makes me wish for a completely original 2D Mario game.

    1. Sean

      Sean

After NSMB I'm not expecting another one for a long time. I don't think Nintendo knows how to push the main 2D Mario series forward.

    2. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

IDK all those new ideas in Mario Maker 2 could work for a stand alone game. Plus it's been 8 years since the last 2D game and they did say that they do want to still make those so who knows.

    3. Sean

      Sean

I'm hoping the Mario Maker games taught them a thing or two about how to make 2D Mario feel fresh and interesting again. If they just literally put out NSMB Switch after all this then my hope's all out the window lol

    4. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Ever since the first Mario Maker, a thought popped up in the back of my head that said they made this because they had officially ran out of ideas for "NEW" 2d Mario games and/or feel the NSMBs brand doesn't have as big of an audience anymore.

They might unwilling to come up with a replacement cause their so used to the "2D = Stremlined, 3D = Unique and Experimental".

    5. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I'm still really in the opinion that we don't need a new 2D Mario for a long while, especially with Mario Maker 2 hitting most of those ideas out of the park in an untouchable quantity.

If they do decide to do a new one sooner rather than later, it needs to be completely different from what we've been getting from the NSMB series. Otherwise I straight up don't see the point.

Some will quickly point out how user made levels will rarely (if ever) match a professional developer's level who has direct access to the engine and all. To which, they're probably right. Though, especially with this recent update, I'm willing to argue that the supposed gap is barely there and, imo, isn't enough to put $60 towards.

    6. PublicEnemy1

      PublicEnemy1

I wish that next game, as impossible as it will be to actually happen, will give us the option to make our own music, enemies, palettes, and other custom stuff, something akin to Little Big Planet. Because, IMO, Super Mario Maker 2 is still a little too limiting on several factors to make the game feel like you're own. I want to at least be able to mix level themes like Desert and Jungle together.

  10.

Ayyy Super Mario Maker 2 got another update.

    1. Diogenes

      Diogenes

disappointed to see this is the last major update already but at least it's a pretty big one.

should've given us a proper smb2 theme, but i guess a half measure's better than nothing

    2. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

Yeah I'm disappointed that the amiibo costumes are gone or didn't try to go the extra mile like Link and the biggest offender is the lack of more extra game modes especially with the 3D World thing that feels like a tease.

    3. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

But why did they not even try with the SMW Koopalings? I did see there are new sprites for SMB3, so maybe these are placeholders. (Cutting it pretty close) Also, props for fixing the P Balloon.

Though I'm pretty sad it's already over; my hopeless desires for a full SMB2 style/more SMB2 elements and at least one more crossover powerup are admitivly to blame. The powerup's an okay middle ground. But it's also that after looking at how they coninue giving Smash support two years after it's released, I'm surprised this didn't last one whole year.

Oh well, this still looks to be the best one out of them all.

Holy frick, this looks AMAZING. Super Mario Bros. 2 gameplay? Laser Mechakoopas? Koopalings? Running across water? P balloons? A WORLD CREATOR? There's so much new stuff that will be utilized in so many unique, creative ways. Legit, this is going to lead to YEARS of amazing new levels. I'm so pumped!

  11. Beat Mighty No.9 and as a reward I went back to play Mega Man 11. Still good.

  12. Playing through mighty no.9 and honestly I really don't hate this game. I can see a good idea under all the technical stuff and if it got a sequel by any chance(funded by level 5) I can see it being a good game.

    1. KHCast

      KHCast

It ended up mediocre and given the expectations thrown on it due to being one of the first big Kickstarter titles, and the years of mismanagement/hype focused marketing and straight up lies, with many people feeling they wasted their money funding the thing due to false promises, especially given they kept finding more money from other places, mediocre wasn’t gonna be enough unfortunately.

I doubt it’ll  get a sequel anytime soon

  13. I really do hope that the next Sonic game has a budget again. Instead of them obviously cutting corners and making the experience feel half assed. If you catch my (Sonic) drift.

  15.

Whenever I see a tweet like this I feel like people don't get the point of the why folks get annoyed with Green hill zone being reused.

    1. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

People don't get it at all.

    2. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Yes. Let's all put a singular boss character on the same level (hurr hurr) as an entire zone that's often two+ acts long while totally ignoring a more valid comparison that's right in front of us (Bowser on a bridge with an axe behind him).

Never mind that across his several appearances, Whispy Woods got harder as the games went on and gained several new attacks, a dual boss variant, and even got to walk and chase the player, making each encounter mostly different enough. Green Hill on the other hand gave us... sand.

    3. Kuzu

    6. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

Diogenes is right, if they actually expanded it and made Green Hill feel more alive and fun, maybe we wouldn't complain as much.

    7. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I feel like if the last few games had stop reusing levels as a selling point or rehashing them like Sonic 4 I'd be a lot less annoyed. Like wasn't that the whole point of Generations? Now it just doesn't feel special or meaningful anymore

    8. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

The problem is that, GHZ use is just a half assed use for nostalgia. If they actually tried to make it good, it would be fine.

  16. So I still haven't beaten 06 or touched Unleashed HD. The plan was to livestream it but I really can't. Ah well.

  17. You ever think if Forces came out in 2010 do you think people would be as harsh to it back then than we are now?

    1. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

To me personally? It would still be an agressively mediocre game. After Unleashed specially.

    2. JezMM

      JezMM

Funnily enough I consider Forces and Colours to have very similar issues, so I guess I would've reacted the same - overabundance of 2D, 3D sections lacking in substance, overcorrecting on difficulty level from last game, Sonic feeling far too stiff to control, etc.  So I might feel the same.  Forces just took me back to how I felt about Colours (right down to my first playthrough being enjoyable, then discovering how limited and awkward it was on replays when I tried to do anything other than follow the developer's intended, singular experience).

    3. Won't Stop, Just Go

      Won't Stop, Just Go

sonic forces controls way worse than colors on a basic level and has even less agency than that game and people would have noticed that for sure.

    4. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

If we had to switch Forces to 2010 and Colors to 2017, Colors would be an improvement.

    5. Kuzu

      Kuzu

I mean, they have the same director and all of it's issues are magnified.

  18. Since we're dropping takes on the timeline I'm still gonna say that Colors got more praise than it actually deserved back then because it wasn't an 06 or Shadow or heroes etc or any bad game that came out it during that dark age. It's just a perfectly average game.

    1. Soniman

      Soniman

Why does  Fandom  get annoyed at the idea of people liking the franchise for like a year or two again because of this game?

    2. Thigolf

      Thigolf

I still love the whole Wisp aspect of it, and I feel that part gets overlooked. SLW and Forces really botched the concept, but Colors often has this wonderful thing where the Wisps take you to alternate routes.

Right in level 1, for example, you can take the top path, but once you got the drill wisp, you can dig in  the dirt, finding a pipe who takes you to another route, or dig right through it, arriving at a third route. A lot of the game is structured like that and I think it's really, really fun to explore the levels again and find those paths for red rings or point bonuses. On top of that, there's fun little diversions like barging through the steel with the Frenzy wisps or the target mini game with the laser. Even when they're required, I feel like they're pretty darn fun.

In SLW and Forces, most of them are just...pointless. Especially in Forces, basically all the wisps do is "See this level geometry? We're gonna skip that shit now". That's all there is to them, because the games don't have alternate paths and all. They completely squandered their potential. Kinda like Classic Sonic, actually, where they just put them in without knowing why they were liked in the first place, and now the mere concept is disliked because of it.

    3. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

If they like it that's fine. I just wish that the praise was more justifiable beyond "it's not a bad game unlike the others"

    4. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

Listen, I hate to blame stuff to only one person, but

Colors was what started the downfall of Kishimoto, I swear that man shouldn't be doing level design for this damn series. Copy paste level design, no sense of flow.... God just please take him out of this series. He shouldn't be directing rookies to do level design.

like imagine Colors with Unleashed day time stages level design or Generations even! Story aside that game would be so much fun to me.

    5. Ferno

      Ferno

Sure people liked the franchise for like 2 years after it and that led to the domino effect that was Forces' level design, controls and lack of camera control, vs referencing Unleashed's level design and controls etc. instead

    6. Soniman

      Soniman

Blaming everything bad about the franchise now on Colors because Forces is a stripped down version of it is like hating on SA1 because 06 is a basterdized version of it. Not really a creed I ever really agreed with. Then again I never saw Unleashed as the series paragon either and believe much better can be done..despite the games after never even attempting to surpass it's average bar height because Sonic Team rested on their laurels super hard

    7. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

I don't think it's Colors' fault to why the series went downhill. I feel like Sonic Team/SEGA learned the wrong lessons with that games praise and didn't bother improving upon it with Generations being the sole exception(albeit it was done by a different team)

    8. Ferno

      Ferno

I mean, I wouldn't really call it stripped down but more like on par with Colors tbh. The other two characters feel worse but Sonic himself and the level design feels pretty much the same minus any drift sections whatsoever.

    9. Won't Stop, Just Go

      Won't Stop, Just Go

      - blaming sonic forces for sonic colors is illogical even if their problems are extremely similar.
      - it's still valid to dislike sonic colors regardless of this though because sonic colors isn't great on its own anyway even without forces to consider
      -soniman hasn't played sonic unleashed
      - sonic unleashed is great

    10. Soniman

      Soniman

Every Sonic take you have is bad

    11. Ferno

      Ferno

new dev team or not, I just find it hard to believe that they even glanced at Unleashed when developing Forces besides the original Hedgehog Engine itself to develop the HE2, and tbh on paper why would they if the game got 4's and 5's across the board when it came out vs the game that got 7's and 8's

  19. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the only Classic game I haven't beaten. It's weird that Mania is my favorite of the bunch takes a a lot of inspiration from it. But for some reason whenever I play it I just never have the composure to beat it.

    1. Thigolf

      Thigolf

I'm always losing interest in Sonic 3&K around the halfway mark. It's pretty fun, but I don't think it keeps itself interesting throughout. It's fine in short bursts, but unlike Mania, I can't play it for too long without just getting... kinda bored?

    2. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

I'm the opposite. I get bored after playing 9 or 10 zones of Mania, find it boring trying to beat the whole game in one sitting. Prefer playing just a few zones each time.

Whereas if I don't beat all of S3K in one sitting it doesn't feel right. S3K does have a better story than Mania, even if Mania has some better cutscenes.

I've literally just done a no-hit playthrough of Sonic 3&K which I'm uploading. I've beaten this game way too many times.

I just think the leveldesign is way more fun. It's fast paced and platform-y at the same time, flowing really well, while I feel like a lot of 3&K is all-in-all relatively slow? Obviously not Sonic 1 slow, but Mania has this great mix of Sonic 2 speed and 3&K platforming/exploration and it's just amazing.

    4. TheOcelot

      TheOcelot

Mania has some fantastic level design which gives 3K a serious run for it's money. I love Studiopolis design so much. However, Mania does also have some flawed level design, some poor enemy placement and a bit too much automation in some zones.

3K's level design is very fluid and it has does have one some occasions slower platform heavier sections which is fine IMO (which can still get through without too much delay). If it was just constant speed speed speed all the time I would find it boring.

Mania has Sonic 3 size zones but the level design is more often feel like an interesting if at times slightly flawed mix of Sonic 2 speed and Sonic CD wacky design.

Whereas 3K's level design is far more consistent, more challenging in terms of platforming but also excellent flow. Way better than Sonic 2.

I guess it's whatever you prefer.

Sometimes I forget that game is hard as hell; because I've beaten S3&K so many times, that I have it memorized like a book.

  20. I'm still bitter that I bought 3 copies of Team Sonic Racing for me and my friends and I can't find anybody online after a month it came out.

Should have got Crash Team racing

      EH, CTR ain't much better.

People are still playing it at least.

I bought CTR and then I dropped it because the shop, the micro-transactions  + the grand prix burnt me out. I didn't want to be like @Nina Cortex Jovahexeon and spend literally 1000 hours on that game.

    5. Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

      Nina Cortex Jovahexeon

CTR NF's a burnout sort of game. It does some things better, but also quite a few things worse than TSR. TSR might've stood mre of a chance if it got constant content updates.

Though TSR is no where near the level of micro-transaction scumbaggery that CTR NF is notorious for.

  21. Somebody has a clip of sonic saying bounce pad?

  22. It's been a while since I started a thread here huh? I saw this video a few days ago and I figured it could warrant a fun discussion. While I don't agree with everything he says like the no weapons for Sonic and in terms of switching characters would be like switching styles from DMC3 in a Sonic Heroes way(God no). Plus people here like @Wraith and @Kuzu have pointed out that Sonic and DMC have parallels so why not the extra mile.
  23. A guy made a video where he would like to see a sonic spinoff character action game in the style of DMC and Bayonetta by Platinum games. IDK if this would warrant it's own thread or not since it's an idea I would like to see

    1. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

I mean there's definitely a discussion to be had there. A topic regarding action stylized games in this series could easily work out imo.

      Jack out of the comics!

What the actual frack. That's my honest reaction lol... but still, discuss it. Although, personally really not interested in something like that, it's not my genre.

    3. Thigolf

Another video where Sonic is animated better than in the last decade of Sonic games

    4. Diogenes

      Diogenes

i wouldn't necessarily oppose a game like that if a competent developer thought they could pull it off, but part of me worries the character designs just wouldn't suit it mechanically. sonic characters are small and stubby and mostly don't use weapons, that's fine in a platformer where you're largely throwing your entire body at enemies, but in a platinum-style action game i'd think you'd want more reach for wider-ranged attacks and spacing. more exaggerated squash and stretch could make up for it, but there's still a limit for how far you can push that.

    5. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

I suppose a game like that could take the combat in Rise of Lyric and Unleashed's Werehog stages as a base. Except instead of being a half baked distraction in what's supposed to be a fast paced platformer, you put it in a genre where that stuff can actually work.

  24. oe7WpUot.jpg-small.jpeg

Literally the only reason why I knew Shantae wasn't going to be in the Fighters pass 1 was because the creator tweeted this out and deleted it.

B-but Deji, that could've been a red herring!

    2. Dejimon11

Yeah like Phil Spencer saying he would be ok with Banjo & Kazooie being in smash bros on his personal account and that was him just being nice. Yeah ok

  25. How are you guys gonna say that Unleashed was the last time SEGA tried with a sonic game when Generations exists? Yeah Planet Wisp, the last set of missions, Silver and Egg Dragoon were average bosses and the Time eater is dog shit and holy crap how did they even think that was a good idea-but it was still a great game once you get past that the last 30 mins.

    1. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

      generations exists and is good

      just not very memorable honestly

    2. Dejimon11

      Dejimon11

The game where it's about remembering the franchises history is not very memorable. That's ironic

    3. JosepHenry

      JosepHenry

like it is memoriable but i don't feel like "oh my god i loooove generations" like yeah it's good

      nothing much to say

    4. Diogenes

      Diogenes

generations is a game that was afraid to be unleashed instead of aspiring to be better than unleashed

and there's only like 15 minutes of decent gameplay in it, if that

    5. Won't Stop, Just Go

      Won't Stop, Just Go

it has its merits but its ultimately just kind of a watered down unleashed. none of the wow factor or the difficulty is here. none of the unique locales or world building. not even any batshit out of left field ideas like the werehog just poorly conceived platforming blindly inserted into an engine not designed for it and a classic game that doesn't begin to scratch the itch.

i like it, but it doesn't stick out that much compared to previous 3D games.

    6. Ferno

    7. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Taken entirely on its own merits, Generations is like a 7/10 game. Take away the nostalgia (which has worn off for me and many others), and it's nothing special.

It's fine. The content it has is okay. The gameplay is alright. The visuals are nice. It's a more consistent package in terms of quality than anything else we'd ever seen in a 3D sonic game before, and wasn't boring like the then-lauded Colours or stupid like Unleashed. That's were praise for the game ends.

The only thing that Generations tried not to do was offend. And it mostly didn't, even if the Classic gameplay was waaaay off the mark.

    8. Strickerx5

      Strickerx5

Generations still has some of the best levels in the series for me. That being said, outside of the music, literally everything else is a downgrade from Unleashed.

Especially that fucking story, or lack there of.

    9. Celestia

      Celestia

TIme Eater aside I liked the bosses in that game. Silver was probably the most fun one too so I don't agree with grouping it with Dragoon (which is quite broken at times, even if I still enjoy it).

    10. Tarnish

      Tarnish

Because what did SEGA try exactly with Genereations? It was a hodgepodge of things randomly thrown together, fueled by nostalgia more than creativity. Like a 'Best of' album, except they remixed the songs to be more contemporary, so now they are worse than the originals in almost every way except raw audio fidelity.
