WhoWhatMan got a reaction from Cuz in [Concept Art/Game] Dan's Game Project
Hi, I disappeared off the face of the earth for some months due to using Twitter often and wanting to develop a project of mine.

So this project in question is a RPG that is (tentatively) named Walter.

Art made by Samson from twitter (srsly commission him, he put way too much effort for the prices he ask for) ((also character designs are legit not final))
I showed off the robot character once or twice before but yeah, his name is Walter and he's the main character of this game. He lived in a world where it's like ours, but just with advanced robotics. They can range from simple cleaning tools, workers/actors/any role you can think of with human like personality to giant military mechs. Walter, on the other hand, was made in a basement through the teamwork of a young couple that just got out of college.  He act as a extra hand at his creators' general shop.

Recently, in the world of Walter, there were couple of terroristic crimes throughout the world by a unknown extremist group. Their goals aren't clear but most of their crimes greatly involve use of robots. Either they be hijacked or custom made, this causes some rising tension between the relationships of humans and machines. As a way to ease the tension, the government made a program called the "Reconnection Project" where they have a randomly chosen robot to go through the motions of human life instead of being stuck doing one job. As a way to get anywhere with the plot, Walter was chosen to be the first volunteer on this experimental project. Due to Walter having a mentality of a young child, he get sent to a school.

During Walter's... adventure(?), he'll make many relationships with his classmates and the citizens in his home town. The three kids, from left to right, are named Miguel, Amanda and James. Considered these guys as the starting party.
Miguel is a young Hispanic boy and is a classmate with Walter. He is bit of a trouble maker and tad to act without thinking. The type that wouldn't mind being dirty or worry about being sick by playing outside during a storm. Unfortunately due to his excitable personality, most of his peers view him as annoying.  During battle, Miguel fights by throwing his shoes and shouts (childish) insults toward his enemies. Though, if he miss his target, he had to waste a turn to run and pick up his shoe.
Amanda is a peer of Walter at his school.  Her family own one of the leading robotic manufacturers in the state and in turn, this caused some unneeded paparazzi to follow her around when she's out of school. It got worsen when a rumor was broke out about a controversy regarding her family's business. Despite that, Amanda keep a calm and cool personality and occasionally revealed that she's pretty street smart. In battle, Amanda abuses the hell out of her data plan and make massive use of her phone. She can call for a pizza, some backup (aka assists) or even requested an air strike.
Finally, James is in Walter's homeroom. James is a worrywart; wanting things to go smoothly as possible without trouble. He is prone to panic when he's in a situation that he isn't familiar with. Outside of that, James is a smart and kind young man that enjoy knitting. He make use of this talent in battle. With his scarf, he can slap enemies with it or get them into a bind to limit their mobility. He can also knit items during battle and offer them as a  gift (bribe) toward his enemies to make them more kinder toward the party or to make them leave.
And there's more characters to come that can assist Walter and his group of friends on the way.... if I can get the money soon to pay the main artist anyway.
So yeah, the game is a turn based RPG mixed with a heavy focus on side quest/activities. So imagine a mixed of Earthbound in term of gameplay and the Yakuza series in term of the weird side stories you get into if you choose to do these side tasks. Similar to the Persona series, they do give you some benefits when you complete them. You'll earn two things when you complete a quest from a character: Bonus stats and assist you in battle. With bonus stats, each character can hold a certain amount of bonus stats. They can range from having higher offense or being strong against certain attacks. This way, you can customize your party to your liking. On the assists, if you run into a battle in the character's general area, there is a high possibility that they'll join in your fight and help you out. It will also make Amanda's phone call for help more efficient by lowering the amount of turns for the character to come and help.
    ...
Okay, post dump is over lol. This is gonna be a long lasting project of mine and I want to have some place to share my ideas and basically do like a "production blog". The updates are going to be super infrequent since I'm still working on finalizing Walter's world and gameplay ON TOP of learning how to make a game proper AND also making money to commission people to bring my ideas in a more presentable light. But uh yeah, I hope you guys enjoy reading my ideas on this project of mine and I'm gonna try my best to make it into an actual product instead of keeping it a day dream.

    Uh Hi LOL

Sorry for just being gone! I just did some growing up to do and focusing on my time elsewhere (also generally embarrassed by how I acted on here when I was younger like every adult gets when they're looking back)

So first thing first, I am 100 percent way more active on twitter over here and you'll be able to see me being alive and talking wow! You will also tend to see me posting art there first than here since this is a rather old website that I don't really want to associate with as much, if I have to be brutally honest.

Second, my art skill certainly got better so I'm going to post more of my stuff that may or may not be related to this current project right now.

To start off, here's the current castaroni of what this thread was originally based on

    Drawn by yours truly

They have bit of a different look than before, don't you think? Especially in term of Walter.

So the reasoning for walter's drastic design change is that the TV head look is kind of generic? Some of my friends made some slight jokes about his old look and this WONDERFUL art attack I got from this year's art fight (which is underneath the spoiler due to slight nsfwness (Nothing sexual, just a beef boy is in the mix lol)
kind of bought into light at how overused the TV Head look was. So in turn, I decided that I should up the "a robot that was made on a zero dollar budget in a college grad's basement" look and give the redesign he got now. Hope you'll like it! I try the best to give the same kind of "odd yet cute" qualities of the original.

Oh yeah, also the story got changed a bit to be ten times less extreme but I'll get into that when I have more stuff done because uh, terrorist attacks sounds way too extreme for this project LOL so please disregard about what I got written up for the characters and whatnot until this point.

Anyhow in term of smaller stuff, I played around with some design for a shop keeper NPC

I felt inspired by the character designs in Drill Dozer so I tried to apply that into these guys' designs. Their name is Mimi and Momo and they run uh, some kind of shop that is going to be forgotten probably when you find a better one BUT YKNOW STILL

On the fan art side of things, I drew Amitie from Puyo Puyo!

Hope ya guys like because I'm awfully proud of this drawing.

Anyhow, that's all for today. It might take a whole year for me to post again but again, please follow my twitter if you want to see what's up with me!

I like to think the whole paragraph about sonic being captured for 6 months was suppose to have a much shorter time frame but Sega really wanted to keep the possibilty of more character DLC open and so, just made it into 6 months instead. Honestly if they made it say "Sonic has been gone for 2 weeks", I feel that cutscene woulda made much more sense. If he was tortured the whole time, how is he able to function properly and doing super risky things like JUMPING FROM SHIP TO SHIP WHILE BEING SHOT DOWN.

I think they were trying to follow that first promotional comic and imply that eggman keep trying to destroy the city's rebel base.

Okay this has the worst 3D level design, especially what seem like a later level. Like WHY have no edges to that kinda tube section if you're going to save the player with shit ton of boost pads. Might as well make it fully automatic instead of giving the player a false sense of control.

I truly believe if they had kept the drift from generations and unleashed, the level design woulda been way better instead of relying on the game keeping sonic in the middle or making the weird turns for you. The team completely dumb down the gameplay and it shows.

i like how classic sonic doesn't even get his own bio in this manual lmao

Anyway, the only real interesting thing to note is that Sega is planning more DLC after the game is done but I think we already knew about getting more after the Shadow's DLC?

I don't want to see the effects of Sonic having endured six months of torture in this or in any game. I want the writers to not fucking mention that sort of shit in a Sonic game, period. You can say that he was imprisoned for a while or something, but not "he was tortured for six months," or don't even specify the precise length of time at all, especially if you're not going to put in the effort of showing just how Eggman came to rule in the first place.
This goes beyond "show, not tell," this just straight up reaches "don't tell us this in any way." Torturing the main character does not belong in a series of this demographic and it's a clear example of a throwaway "wow we're so edge" line for pure shock value.

To be honest, I'm not sure why they specified a time frame at all. It just made how abrupt everything was feel even worse. Like, anything would've been better than a text box, but even just replacing "six months passed, deal with it" with "the Resistance and Eggman's army continued the struggle, until one day..." would've been, uh, marginally better. Of course that leads into how abrupt it is immediately after the time skip which would also need to be fixed, lol. It's funny because while there are some other plot issues here and there that's the main thing that still gets to me, aside from Infinite not getting a proper sendoff.
Then again it's not surprising since I'm someone who's more invested in character writing / interaction, which...this game is a mixed bag on. Sonic was actually pretty great, Tails backpedaled from Lost World but not quite enough backpedaling tbqh (RIP SA1&2 Tails), Knuckles & Amy were just really boring outside of the one moment each where the writers remembered their quirks...and on the villains side I actually like their idea for Eggman on paper but it felt abrupt, and Infinite is actually pretty interesting to me but again, the lack of sendoff was weird as hell, and we're still waiting on supplementary material for his origins so who knows how that's gonna go.

+The music is pretty decent. As are the graphics.
+Storyline is better than I thought, but still not amazing.
+Infinite is a decent new character. Eggman is a great villain.
-Level design ranges from pretty average to terrible. Nothing substantial or exciting. Just boring.
-Tails has been ruined by inconsistent characterisation again.
-No Shadow or Chaos boss fight.
Its going to be a mixed bag here and all across the fan base. Sonic Team need to take a break from the series and understand why Sonic is considered fun.
Its not a bad game like Shadow the Hedgehog or ‘06. But it’s disappointingly not up to the more recent games like Colours or Generations.
