      @Mayor D hinted that Forces went through some kind of development hell, so I'd pin it on that.

      If the developers cannot break out of development hell, then the more work that gets put into it, the worse the final product will be. For example, Forces is far from perfect but at least playable and potentially enjoyable, and it got 4 years of development (maybe) with developers likely putting in hours that are normal for them for the stage of the game they were at. Now compare that to Sonic Xtreme, which was barely playable in its final state, did not finish even one level, and ended up being forced into cancellation. That game got 5 years if you count early concepts like Sonic Mars and 3 years if you don't, with the developers working themselves to the limit and even beyond to the point where three of the guys helming the project got pneumonia and almost died.
