      I just remember Tristan picking fights with Tyson Hesse and Ian Flynn last year over literally nothing.

      First of all it was TSSZ's mistake in the first place, reposting an out of context quote from years ago about how the FF were outdated...except Ian said it in the context explaining why they were updated for the reboot. This was, of course, left out of the tweet.

      So Ian (understandably) felt the need clarify his actual stance on those characters, and he didn't even reply to or call attention to TSSZ over it. It's worth noting there already was a group of people who seem to legitimately believe Ian hates the FF and secretly wanted them gone. So all in all it made sense for Ian to say something, considering how people online can be.

      Tristan took Ian's statement as an insult somehow(???), going by his response where he said "Ian, I have no idea why you have such disdain for me and for our organization--it feels personal--but I will listen and try to come to terms with you on it, however you'd like." (For the record it seems there was more to that tweet at the end but the discord embed I'm relying on cuts off there, and I think the tweet was deleted even before the total cleanse of the TSSZ account today?)

In response to @Dr. Detective Mike in the Archie thread, here’s a headcanon about how the Archie Sonic multiverse works: Every Sonic continuity, and alternate realities relating to said continuities, all exist in one giant omniverse. The game reality is the Prime zone. From it spawned countless chains of other alternate realities. Some realities gain enough traction for a sub-multiverse to be built around it. The original version of the Archie Sonic multiverse was the most famous example of this phenomenon, spawning practically infinite realities, with a big cosmic barrier forming around all of it, effectively closing it off from the outside omniverse, resulting in a secluded multiverse in which Archie’s Mobius Prime was considered the one true zone of it all. Travel outside of the multiverse happened on incredibly rare occassions, such as when Eggman made contact with Mega Man’s world. The Super Genesis Wave not only obliterated all of these alternate zones, leaving the Archie Sonic multiverse a shadow of its former immenseness, but also destroyed the cosmic wall, allowing access to the outer omniverse, made evident by the travel to the different Sega and Capcom worlds in Worlds Unite.

  5. This is another thing I’ve always wanted to bring up: what does that mean for all the alternate future timelines that are out there? Light Mobius and Dark Mobius, for example, are both possible/alternate future timelines that diverged from Mobius Prime’s own timeline. Since the Sonics in these two futures have the same memories as the “present day” Prime Sonic (up to a certain point), they would theoretically also remember being informed of their status as the “Prime” Sonic. Except, then...the very fact they are alternate timeline versions, by definition, would mean they are NOT the Prime versions. So, like, did these alternate future Sonic’s go around believing they were still the Prime versions? Or does Zonic have to pop into every diverging future timeline once they are created to inform their Sonic that “hey, so, remember that time I told you you were the one true Sonic? Well...”

    They should have been fully aware that Rouge was infiltrating Eggman’s inner circle, and yet they still treated her as if she was a genuine threat (sending Flying Dog after her, leaving her locked in the vault, etc...)

    One could argue that they were doing it to keep up appearances, so that Eggman didn’t get suspicious, but that nuance completely flew out the window when they basically left her to die.

      Yeah, her working for GUN wasn't a thing until Sonic 06, in Sonic Heroes she wonders how the President is doing and is seen again working only for the President in Sonic Battle. The President did order her to work with GUN in Sonic X, where it's elaborated that there was a hidden corrupt section of GUN trying to keep their involvement with Project Shadow a secret. Normally I wouldn't include information from what is clearly a different continuity, but in this case I think it's worth mentioning because Sonic X did include several cut scenes and dialogue originally meant for both Adventure games.

      I just mentioned this in a previous status update oddly enough.

      Even if she was, it's kind of easy to handwave anything about GUN since they were clearly working in full blown self preservation mode the whole time, regardless of the possibilities of those around them. They were willing to throw SONIC literally under the bus just to keep Project Shadow from getting out and had previously committed mass genocide, so doing the same to one of their own agents would be child's play for them.

  11. I love Genesis, if only for the nostalgic memories it brings up. And I’m not talking about “classic Sonic game” memories. That general period in the fandom was absolutely nuts, with whether or not Sally had indeed died at the end of 225 being a hot topic for a solid four months, with responses from both sides being pure gold; I recall how on Bumbleking there was a thread opened up that was dedicated exclusively to making fun of it all. As for the story itself; I still liked it. The way it played on my suspense was pretty well done imo. There was a hint of tension that came from seeing Sonic and co initially going about their new life remaining completely unaware that something big was happening right under their noses, with those tensions ramping up when the old memories started to leak through. I remember getting proper chills when this panel suddenly popped up in part 3.

      Yeah. But I turned them off pretty recently and can't say I've missed them. Personally I think this forum's signature requirements are too lax and can easily lead to massively tall signatures. I want to focus on the actual discussion going on, not on people's huge sigs. Which is too bad because I think they're a fun feature in general.

  14. Whenever I see people talk about their ideal multi-canon Sonic crossover, it usually consists of all of the different Sonic’s meeting up.

    I personally disagree. No, with a crossover like that, I’d much rather it be about one single Sonic teaming up with multiple heroes that appear exclusively in outside continuities.

    Let’s say, for example, IDW did a “Sonic comic crossover event” where the three major Sonic comic canons (IDW, Archie, and Fleetway) crossed over. I personally wouldn’t want it to be a big clusterfuck of three different Sonics and alternate versions of a bunch of other characters.

    Instead, I’d have the IDW versions of Sonic and co merely teaming up with characters who appear exclusively in Archie and StC (who come in from their respective universes), with IDW exclusive characters like Tangle and Whisper being on Sonic’s side for the sake of having a pure IDW rep.

      It's a really arbitrary and strange thing to choose between... but fine, whatever. In terms of the "big" games, 25th for Mania is obviously the best and 15th for '06 is obviously the worst. I'd put SA2 above Generations, but the two can go either way. 

      As for the celebration, I wasn't even ten years old when Sonic celebrated his 10th birthday, didn't have any platform newer than a Mega Drive and wasn't active in any online communities. Can't really rate it as I wasn't involved. 15th Anniversary was basically just another year for Sonic, but the 15th Anniversary logo was slapped on everything and the best game to come out with that branding was Riders, followed by Rivals. Not the best showing all in all, even if I do really like Riders. The 25th Anniversary had a really cool party with a the most incredible music, but it felt so arbitrary when there were no games released around the anniversary and everything just came so much later. Boom Fire & Ice was the only game that calendar year. The best is obviously the 20th Anniversary. A great year for celebrations. Generations, Classic Sonic and the positive buzz were good enough all on their own, but a special mention goes out to the Generations demo that was launched on Sonic's actual birthday. Good move, SEGA (even if the inevitable data mine screwed over marketing plans). 2011 was a good time to be a Sonic fan. 

      And logos... I really don't have an opinion. They're all fine, I guess?

      AOSTH Robotnik did transform Black Beard the Pirate into a robot, by the end of the episode Sonic shreds him into ribbons...does that count? Robotnik took a ways his humanity and free will, but Sonic is the one that destroyed him...does that mean AOSTH Sonic has a body count? Black Beard as a robot still shows up for the Sonic says segment at the end, was he rebuilt? Did this segment chronologically happen earlier in the episode and we, the audience, didn't get to see it until now? Are the Sonic Says segments even canon within the show?

    Tell me, is there a place where I can read all the manual stories from different regions if possible?

      Sonic Retro has the most up-to-date translations of game manuals. All the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System/Game Gear games have the story sections translated, but character and level descriptions are still mostly untranslated. Some of the level descriptions for Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)  8-bit and 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Chaos were translated in a forum post on the Sonic Retro forums.

      The story for Sonic the Fighters was published in a magazine, so it won't be in the manual section on Sonic Retro, so if you want to read the translation of that game's story you need to go the game's main page: Sonic the Fighters story

      Hear are some additional things you might like to see if you want to try and better understand the narrative of Sonic:

      Chaos Emerald Legend - Originally published in a Japanese Sonic Adventure Strategy Guide, it provides lots of additional information about Knuckles' race that wasn't in the game.

      At the End of the Battle... - Also published in the same strategy guide, it provides better clarity as to how Sonic was able to calm Chaos down. Also explains what Tikal's Prayer means, you know the one that goes "The servers are the 7 Chaos. Chaos is power, power enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos."

      The Truth of 50 years ago - Originally published in a Japanese Sonic Adventure 2 Strategy Guide, it takes the form of a report Rouge the Bat gave to the President after the events of Sonic Adventure 2. Provides lots of information about Professor Gerald and Maria that was absent from the game. It also has information that hints that Shadow might not be the original Ultimate Life Form that met Maria, something Rouge hints at in the game itself ("Even your memories might not be real, you know.") and something that Shadow even says during the FinalHazard fight. If you would like additional information on this I'll gladly provide you with additional information on this long held fan theory.

      space in video games is often an abstract thing. station square isn't "really" just a short loop of road between the hotel and town hall plus an inaccessible little lot near the casino, that's just how they streamlined the idea of a city into something manageable and efficient. likewise angel island probably didn't "really" fall directly into Tails' backyard, or even as close to the train station as it appears ingame.

      that said it's still a huge fuckin' island and someone probably should've noticed.

      There's a lot of plot oddities in SA in retrospect.

      Like the fact Knuckles trusts Eggman despite the fact he not only has the same thing he suspected to destroy his emerald but also sicking said water blob at him after feeding it a Chaos Emerald. All at once mind you so Knuckles kind of doesn't have an excuse.

      There's a lot more out there like Sonic just letting Eggman get away with doing everything like kidnapping Amy for example. I just can't think of anything else on the top of my head. I really think SA1 needs a bump in both presentation and writing if you ask me.

      Prologue: Sonic is a famous hedgehog along a string of islands; he's athletic, he's cool, he's an air pilot, a literal rockstar in a band and has a ton of fans. Dr Robotnik hates him (and his music).
      SEGASonic: Sonic's first major run-in with Dr Robotnik. Gets captured alongside two other acquaintances and they work together to escape. They take down his fortress and go their separate ways for a time. 
      Sonic 1: Considering this failure a fluke, Robotnik retreats to South Island to move on with his plan to nab the Chaos Emeralds and use their power for his as of now unrealized Death Egg Project. Sonic shows up, notices his little animal friends are being used to power Robotnik's Badniks, and proceeds to whip him good. Robotnik retreats.
      Sonic CD: Twice humiliated by Sonic, and with the Chaos Emeralds out of reach, Robotnik goes to Plan B; to collect the Time Stones on the Miracle Planet to turn it into a mechanical orbital weapon. Sonic shows up as expected, and Robotnik unveils his Sonic robot doppelganger, Metal Sonic. Amy, a fan of Sonic from his rockstar days, stalks him and gets kidnapped instead. Sonic rescues her and frees the Miracle Planet. Metal Sonic is broken and lost on the planet for now.
      Sonic 2: Robotnik, now thrice humiliated, decides to go all in on his Death Egg Project. He instead opts to mine resources from Westside Island (rings, chemicals, oil) to power his weapon. He makes a crappy Sonic robot. Sonic flies in on his airplane and meets Tails, a native. He shows promise as a valuable sidekick and they become fast friends. Sonic collects the Chaos Emeralds in the meantime and discovers he can use their power to turn into Super Sonic. He takes down the Death Egg and cements his friendship with Tails.
      Sonic 3&K: The Death Egg crashlands on the mysterious Angel Island, where Knuckles, the last echidna, guards a powerful source of energy. Robotnik quickly devises a plan to use that source, the Master Emerald, to re-power the Death Egg. He makes a less crappy Sonic robot. Sonic and Tails fly in and are blindsided by Knuckles, tricked by Robotnik. After a big adventure, they discover that Knuckles was duped and they team up to destroy the Death Egg once and for all. Soon after, Sonic scatters the emeralds so Robotnik won't get his grubby hands on them again. 
      Sonic 2 GG: Robotnik, thoroughly done with Sonic's interference, captures Tails as bait and holds him for ransom. He makes a really crappy Sonic robot. Sonic races to rescue Tails, and succeeds.
      Sonic Chaos: Things are starting to get old hat. After finding a signature for the Chaos Emeralds on South Island, Robotnik heads there posthaste to nab as many as he can. After nabbing just one, this somehow triggers a reaction that causes South Island to start sinking into the ocean. He also mechanizes parts of the Green Hill Zone to goad Sonic. Sonic and Tails catch wind of this and head over to correct the issue as soon as possible. They succeed and defeat Robotnik yet again.
      Sonic Generations: After saving South Island once again, Sonic goes for a stroll through the restored Green Hill only to be sucked into a time portal with Tails and get roped into an adventure with their future selves. They make short work of the Eggmen and return home. This may have consequences down the road for the stability of spacetime.
      Sonic Triple Trouble: After breathing a sigh of relief, things quiet down. Robotnik takes advantage of the sense of peace and nabs all of the Chaos Emeralds to power a doomsday weapon. Things go awry when the Emeralds don't work quite the way he anticipates, and they scattered across the planet. While Robotnik was able to find one of them, the rest are missing. He locates Knuckles (freshly confused about all the time paradoxes that went on in the last game) and tells him that Sonic's gone mad with power and is looking for the Emeralds. Meanwhile a greedy bounty hunter named Fang the Sniper has discovered the Emeralds and, acting independently, is keeping the Emeralds for himself in the Special Stage. Sonic and Tails get back to work to wrestle the Emeralds from Fang, knock sense into Knuckles and kick Robotnik in the teeth once again.
      Sonic 3D Flickies Island: Exhausted after everything he's been through, Sonic retreats to Flickies Island to chill with the locals. Except Robotnik's back on his BS and is capturing the small animals and shoving them into his Badniks. We learn that they have magical abilities to travel through Warp Rings, explaining how they can be used as batteries in robots. Sonic rescues them all and sends Robotnik packing. Tails and Knuckles were there for some reason.
      Sonic Mania: It's been a while since Sonic and Robotnik first started butting heads, and the aforementioned consequences of messing with the space-time continuum are knocking at the door. A mysterious purple rock shows up out of nowhere. Robotnik discovers the Phantom Ruby on Angel Island, and tries using it to help create the biggest robot ever, as well as reviving Metal Sonic. Warping all over the planet on some familiar and new territory, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles proceed to take down Robotnik and his Hardboiled Heavies. After a heated battle against Robotnik and the Heavy King, Sonic gets warped into a separate timeline.
      Sonic Forces: Sonic gets warped to a reality where Dr Eggman has taken over the world. He's having none of that and gets to work moving across levels from left to right, and blows up a pretty shoddy version of the Death Egg. Everyone recognizes that the two Sonics are no longer part of the same timeline. After taking down the Eggman Empire, Sonic returns to his timeline.
      Sonic Mania Plus (Encore): While Sonic was missing, Robotnik took advantage of the confusion and captured Sonic's old acquaintances Mighty and Ray. Sonic rescues them and they find out that he's trying to revive his Titanic Monarch project. Meanwhile, the Heavies grab ahold of the Phantom Ruby and use it to warp reality yet again, causing the world to display in strange colors and subtly changing the landscape to trip up Sonic and co. They defeat Robotnik yet again, leave Metal Sonic broken on the Miracle Planet, and the Hardboiled Heavies become a non-threat and Sonic and the rest can finally relax. The team goes off in their separate ways. 
      Sonic 4 E1/E2: Robotnik is absolutely DONE with Sonic's nonsense. Out of patience (and out of funds), he re-uses all of his old machines in his new master plan to re-capture the Miracle Planet, revive his prized Metal Sonic, and destroy Sonic once and for all. Sonic, with Tails soon rejoining him, get to work to beat Robotnik once more. Miracle Planet remains captured inside of a Death Egg mkII shell. 

      I have nothing for Knuckles Chaotix or the two Game Gear Tails games, nor the occasional instance where there are 6 emeralds instead of 7. Sonic 1 can be early canon weirdness, anything after is probably balancing for the shorter nature of the Game Gear games.

      I'd say sonic triple trouble happens after generations, erasing the events of sonic 3k due to time travel and the reason why knuckles is fooled by robotnik, AND meta wise, Why Sega likes to neglect the whole game. They officially become friends at the end of this game then sonic blast happens. Robotnik attempts to build a weaker version of the death egg called the silver castle and gets defeated. Tails is absent from this game so at the same time he's on his own adventures SKY PATROL AND TAILS ADVENTURE. After that, everybody decides to go gokarting for some reason and sonic drift happens.

      That's more or less how I feel, but I do think 8-bit Sonic 1 is a unique adventure and not simply a retelling or alternate telling of the first game.

      The Sonic the Hedgehog Technical Files, kind of the internal series bible for Sonic in Japan, mentions that Sonic fought Eggman on South Island twice. Eggman mentions how angry he is that Sonic keeps beating him in the Japanese manual for the 16-bit version of Sonic 1, while this detail is absent in the 8-bit version. The Technical Files also mention Eggman vows revenge on Sonic after losing for the first time, which better gels with Eggman's anger of losing to Sonic in the 16-bit manual then the 8-bit manual where he mentions no such thing.

      Plus, the 8-bit version of Sonic 1 begins with Eggman simply trying to attack Sonic with his Eggmobile, no fancy checker balls, drills or lazers yet. I interpret this as Eggman not being too familiar with Sonic yet, and if we want to even go further with this theory, the Roller badnik in Spring Yard Zone bears a resemblance to Sonic in both appearance and abilities, almost serving as a prototype to the Sonic robots that Eggman would eventually make. The Roller badnik is not in the 8-bit version of the game, leaving the possibility open that Eggman based the badnik on Sonic after previously encountering him.

      Because of all this, I believe it's possible the Master System/Game Gear version of Sonic 1 is a prequel to the Mega Drive/Genesis version of the game. At least it is in my headcannon.

      ...that makes a lot of sense! If I ever update my big ol' timeline I might actually go with that. I think I'd keep SEGASonic first though, I dunno.

      @Tracker_TD perhaps change it to Sonic 1 GG > SEGASonic > Sonic 1 MD.

      Robotnik realises just how much of a nuisance Sonic is from the GG game, so tries to get him out the way in SEGASonic in preparation for his takeover in Sonic 1 MD.

      Oh, I agree with SEGASonic. Although it's just as possible that it takes place some time latter as a form of revenge, putting it in the beginning of the timeline just works for a variety of reasons.
