It really brightened my day. Was the first time we’d seen any family in person since this all started.

  13. What franchises/characters do you think would be better off being taken away from their creators?

    1. Lord-Dreamerz

      Lord-Dreamerz

None. I could probably count more characters that were previously taken away from their OG creators and placed within the hands of a new set of owners who didn't know how to handle the product greatly because they lack the correct mindset of the real original creator. Unless proper successors are carefully chosen, otherwise I feel most characters/series should be left alone to the past instead of being dragged around by new owners most of which likely don't have the best intentions for it.

The most obvious answer to me is Ken Penders' cast of characters.

I’m going to be controversial and say Harry Potter. JK Rowling seems to be doing anything in her power to make the series collapse in on itself, and I wish it would stop.

adding onto what i was saying before. i think it can be quite disturbing when outsiders think they have more of a right to something then the creators themselves do. Never put it pass certain "fans" to feel entitled to other people's stuff.

There's creators out there that have a good conceptual idea, but does not know how to bring out the potential, either through lack of ability, or skill.

This is exactly why I mentioned Ken Penders as my key example. On a conceptual level, quite a few of his characters are alright. However, Penders does not have even remotely the writing chops to make them work, and will often lead into godawful writing tropes that make characters look atrociously bad.

Under Penders' writing, not only was his cast either unlikable, Mary-Sues, or somewhere in between, but he affected the SEGA cast heavily to push them, even to this day, where he keeps pulling sly references to them to prop his cast up (The most infamous of which being when he claimed that Geoffrey St. John took Sally Acorn's virginity - I.E - an adult sleeping with an underage character).

Fans aren't entitled to a creation, but they are entitled to an opinion in regards to that creation, and it can be often times infuriating to see your favourite creations ruined and destroyed by a writer who doesn't understand the appeal to them - which yes - this can happen to the creator of said characters. Fans are entitled to judge, criticise, and discuss writing and characters, and being the creator of said writing/character doesn't automatically mean it can be shut down with "I made them!!".

Ian Flynn took these characters and made them likeable, gave them flaws, and wasn't afraid to call out their questionable actions. Locke went from a scumbag who never got called out for his shitty actions to a deeply flawed man who gave up his own life to save his son and make up for his past sins, for just one key example.

Hell, in Penders' own "masterpiece" - M25YL - even he destroyed his own characters that he originally created. Julie-Su - as much as a mary-sue as she was - was originally written as a tomboy action girl who didn't take shit from people, a very proactive character.

In M25YL, she underwent serious chickification (as TVTropes would put it) -  she began wearing more girly outfits, underwent a redesign to make her more feminine in general, had little to no agency as a character (Letting Knuckles/Lara go at it in arguments while just making a few comments, forgiving a sister who mentally abused her for years - and who didn't show any signs of redemption), and lost all character traits that essentially made her Julie-Su. Of course fans have a right to call this type of shit out, that's essentially killing a character by making them into something totally different.

So yeah, I have no issues whatsoever saying Penders shouldn't have his cast of characters. He can't write them well at all, usually ends up making them look awful as characters, and makes them frustrating to watch.

F Zero. Give it to SEGA since it was one of their (defunt) teams who made the best and last game in the series. If it came to Sonic becoming Nintendo property, they should trade F Zero for him.

All Rare IPs. Less about the series getting taken away by their creators and more about the creators getting out of Microsoft and bringing them back to the rest of the old staff at Playtonic.

@Ryannumber1gamer Other higher skilled creators who can make better use of other folks stuff isn't justification for thinking stuff should be stolen away and be given to somebody else just because fans like them more.  It is a different story when a franchise was made for a company, because those are group effort projects to start with and not really owned by any single person. I may not think folk like Ken Penders is a good creator either, but i wouldn't support having his ideas getting took away. however his stuff is heavily based on other people stuff AKA Sonic so how much he owns his ideas is fairly gray and could be up for debate.

But point is as a creator myself I try to see this from a creator's point of view, and when i imagine the mere idea of somebody suggesting higher skilled creators should be given my characters... oh THAT makes my blood boil.

I feel like Astro Boy improved outside of Tezuka's penmanship. I dislike the original manga. Though obviously that actually happened so I have retrospect.

I feel weird about wishing anything be displaced from it's current writers. I find that incredibly hard to judge. They could probably retool their own work and are more likely to do so while remaining "faithful".

    12. Original Character

      Original Character

As far as I know all the "bad" additions to the Harry Potter series happened outside JK Rowling's penmanship. (Harry Potter and The Cursed Child and any supplementing stories and material)

Otherwise she writes stupid stuff on Twitter at 3 Am with no thought put into it.

But yeah, she probably shouldn't write another "Harry Potter" at least, that story is finished.

Looked it up, it's "co-written" by her. I think Jack Thorne is the main writer.

Fantastic Beasts, well it's it's a different story I guess... I suppose it could still be criticised for "rubbing against" the main stories. But I'm not sure I would bother with that too hard.

I have trouble separating a IP from their creator IE harry potter IS JK Rowling's shitty world building, plotting and politics. It always was that in the end even back when I liked it more. Probably wouldn't be salvagable without making new characters anyway.

Every creator/corperation has shitty politics, agenda and shady practices though. They're all greedy, wealthy elites who like looking "woke".

Shady Mega-corperations sell us movies where shady mega-corperations are the villians and millionaire CEOs make bank when their underlings write a stories about how not everything is money.

I do wonder though, in way. How would people even feel about authors retooling their own series?

I feel people would be more lenient if a licencee or new owner retooled it, and would be more likely to accept it's own thing rather than an intended replacement, and constantly comparing it to, the original.

  14. May as well share this one I’ve had for a number of years now. Title: A Distant Memory (possible title idea) Media: comic/short story Outline: set in the post-SGW Archie continuity, Sonic accidentally goes through a Genesis Portal while chasing Metal Sonic, and finds himself in a pocket dimension that he finds weirdly familiar. He meets an alternate, seemingly younger version of himself and his respective gang of Freedom Fighters who are fighting against Dr. Robotnik while hiding out in the hidden underground village of Knothole. Sonic is pulled into helping these alternate versions of himself and his friends, and they need it now more than ever, as Knothole is currently in danger of being flooded out by a leak, and Metal Sonic being lost in the zone somewhere doesn’t help matters either. As events progress, Sonic’s sense of deja vu increases, with things finally coming to a head when he’s spontaneously able to remember that a power ring was hiding in a nearby well. With the help of his own Tails (who he’d been keeping in contact with until heading through the portal, and was able to regain contact with again with alternate Rotor’s help), the duo manage to figure out that this pocket dimension is an “echo” of the original Prime Zone, from before the Super Genesis Wave, which is permanently stuck in the time period of the Freedom Fighters earliest exploits. This revelation gets Sonic to mull over the “old memories” he had after the Wave again, which he admits he had completely forgotten about until now, and that he could barely remember any of, which he now looks back on like a lucid dream, or as memories that were completely detached from himself. Soon enough, the two Sonic’s and the Freedom Fighters manage to defend Knothole’s secret location from Robotnik, and dispatch Metal Sonic in the process (during which Robotnik briefly sees Metal and becomes inspired to start making his own robot Sonic duplicate. “Such a deceptive creation needs an appropriate name. Pseudo Sonic, perhaps? Yes, I like that”). By the end of it all “classic” Sonic has basically sussed that his new counterpart is some sort of future version of himself, and naturally begins to quiz him on the future. Main Sonic hesitates. He can’t remember the majority of what the “future” has in store for his younger self, apart from brief flashes, with the majority of recollections being from near the end of his old life (Antoine in a coma, Bunnie MIA, Sally as a robot, and plenty more pain and suffering on top). Sonic is only able to reassure his younger self that “everything will turn out alright in the end”. Back home, Sonic and Tails mull over what they’d just experienced. He tells Tails what he told younger Sonic, with Tails in turn reassuring him that he’ll probably never get to experience those hardships anyway, since time seemed to be stuck in a permanent loop there. The story ends with the two of them grateful that they will still remember the hardship their past selves went through. “We may not remember the details, but none of us would be here right now if they hadn’t gotten us through it all”. tl;dr: Archie Sonic from the post-SGW continuity, winds up in a pocket dimension where everything resembles the earliest Archie Sonic issues (the in-universe rationale being that it’s an “echo” of the old timeline, created from the SGW). There are references to those early, more lighthearted issues throughout, and it gets Sonic and Tails to start thinking about the old world again, during which readers get a glimpse into how they much still remember. It’s set out as if it it were an officially-published Archie Sonic anniversary story, where the references to the bulk of the old continuity are largely subdued due to the theoretical restrictions, with the fact the majority of Sonic’s memories are faded being a way to explain it in-narrative. Does it exist: no. I have considered taking a crack at it for years, but my writing skills are not exactly the best.

  20. I’d prefer IDW got the Mega Man rights if only so they can reprint the crossovers.
  21. Something I’m still curious to know: was Omega’s recasting in TSR done before or after the Vic stuff happened?

Like, when was TSR’s voice recording completed? In the months before its originally intended 2018 release date, and thus, before the accusations came out? If so, had Vic recorded for Omega already, and they took advantage of the delay by replacing him later?

    1. Zaysho

      Zaysho

It's kind of hard to say because Willingham and Quinton Flynn also left their roles and Blaze was in the process of being recast. I feel like the bulk of the recording had to have already been in place in 2018 since I recall people saying Knux sounded off since even before then. They might already had plans to ditch lame-broly before he got himself in hot water and didn't contract him to begin with.

    2. Polkadi~☆

      Polkadi~☆

Ehh, TSR had a lot of weird issues around it, that the voice acting situation was a bit... strange. I'd imagine it was just part of the strange recasting.

  22. I still think Chris’ whole arc would have been just a little bit better if they’d eliminated one of his two major “I don’t want Sonic to leave” mental breakdowns.

Either keep episode 26 as-is, and then have Chris better accept Sonic’s departure in episode 50 as a sign of character growth.

Or move his little moment in episode 26 up to episode 50, where it would not only be somewhat more believable (Chris hasn’t known Sonic all that long by episode 26, he shouldn’t be this attached to the guy yet), but also generally reflect better on his character by not making him look like a spoiled brat.

  23. About two months ago I saw a clickbait article that listed “weird Sonic characters you won’t believe actually exist”.

Not only was their definition of what makes a character “weird” just plain stupid (“Cream has no dad. OOOOOOH” “why is Espio purple lol?”) but Antoine appeared on the list twice because they thought his Archie and SatAM counterparts were two different characters.

Poorly researched Sonic articles are funny.
