  1. I dunno why this is so fun to watch, but it is.

  2. Pretty much all of the Sega worlds that were used in Worlds Unite fit Sonic’s tone perfectly.
  3. So in Smash Ultimate we have:

-The main protagonist of a game that is filled to the brim with sexism, homophobia and transphobia.

-A character from a series with music by a sexist, homophobic, war-denying, suicide-denying composer whose works will likely be showing up in the game.

Smash Ultimate is cursed, isn’t it?

It's more like the world isn't homogeneous in its views on homsexuality and Japan is very different to UK and the West in general. Persona speaks of wilful ignorance, and the DQ composer is a hack. You just have to separate the art from the artist. People are always going to disagree and, sad though it is, people are allowed to be homophobic etc.

    4. Wraith

      Wraith

Seperating the art from the artist is impossible. It comes down to whether you actually care if you're supporting these people with your dollar or not.

With video games being big collaborative efforts it's essentially impossible to make sure none of your money is going toward a racist, sexist, homophobe etc. Still I won't lie and say learning about key figures behind the art or seeing these ideas in the art in Persona's case doesn't give me pause. I don't really feel comfortable supporting the Persona IP anymore until Atlus has it's act together just because it got kind of overt and gross about it in a way I think is disrespectful.

    5. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Oh I agree. You have to wonder really if ATLUS is saying "Yeah we stand for homophobia", and if they're not saying, that then why they're putting their name on products that say it.

Yknow the sad but kinda funny thing? The gay character in Persona 4 dancing, as basic and cliche as you could get for a gay stereotype he was, had some actual charm and personality that made him just feel like a guy that happened to be gay and owned that fabulousness with no shame. Still a stereotype, but at least he was fun. The persona 4 subset is weird cause they get so close to having decent lgbt representation, but then shoot themselves in the foot in one way or another

It's a different culture. You can't expect everyone to agree with your views anyway.

If the views of the person affect you that much, don't buy their product.

I also live in a culture similar to Japan when it comes to the views of homosexuality so I suppose I might not understand how you feel in this situation so I apologise if my words were too harsh.

Japan has a culture, sure. Persona is a product that is now produced and released within a global market.

And then you have Kanji Tatsumi, who really muddles up the Persona 4 situation. From my point of view, he’s very much a bisexual. But it’s all in the eye of the beholder, as questions regarding his sexuality is never answered, and left to interpretation.

Also, I wouldn’t say Persona 5 is filled to the brim with sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and all that... After all, you even meet a drag queen/trans woman (never explained, it just is) owning a bar, who is someone that genuinely cares about your safety for hanging around a red light district, as well as playing emotional support to one of your confidants, and her work pays you better than all other jobs (but that’s rather superficial here).

Finishing off that I believe that statement is a lie, that’s as far as I’ll go talking about that. The two gay sexual predators are unfortunate, but their screentime is thankfully under a minute to the total 100 hours of gameplay. But all this to say Hashino still isn’t a good person, I just don’t think the game ended up too affected by his views.

@DiamondX Still find it ridiculous that it has to be considered a “view” or “political” topic, the idea of treating people different from you in who they wanna love with respect vs something to be mocked and joked at, but I digress

@Polkadi~♪ Uhhh, it’s more than once the gay sex predators show up. Not to mention, they still are there. Doesn’t matter that it’s brief. It makes it clear what they find acceptable and “funny”.And then there’s the whole controversy of there not still being male x male romance options in a game series that has romance as a selling point. Also Ryuji’s a creep like all the past protag best friend characters from 3+

Even if all cultures were to accept it, you would still have people with different opinions on it.

You can't force someone to think the way you want to about something.

      Just my opinion...

A game that does the same lame gay predators joke would be bad enough on it's own, but the game also features relationships between adult women and the high school aged protagonist, framed as romantic and desirable and not "creepy." I can't help but wonder why that is.

That along with the fanservice and queer baiting makes a game about outcasts overturing the status quo of society for the sake of the downtrodden come off as...kinda tone-deaf at the best of times.

I was really disappointed with Persona 5's writing on the whole though so my perspective is a bit different. Even looking past these issues I didn't have a lot of fun with the story/characters so it's hard to "turn my brain off" so to speak.

@DiamondX No you clearly can’t, but it’s still imo a sentiment we as a society can do without. We’re all humans with differences. Do we really need, for example, some people killing gay people in concentration camps because they don’t understand how falling in love works when it’s the same sex? If you don’t like it fine, but just keep it to yourself? I don’t openly hate on someone for liking a food, or movie, etc. I don’t. It’s elementary school level teachings here. I don’t get how society makes this such a “complicated” issue.

@Wraith Doesn’t help that 3 & 4 also had these problems(the P3 guys making fun of a trans women, Yosuke’s homophobia and teasing Kanji, etc.) , so just further highlights Atlus’s complacencies and what they think people will be fine with.

    17. Wraith

      Wraith

4 doesn't bother me as much as 5. Even if you dont consider the 9 year gap between games Yosuke's behavior isn't treated as acceptable and Chie/other characters reinforce Kanji being fine the way he is.

Yosuke honestly felt like a realistic portrayal of a boy who's insecure about that kind of thing. Doesn't mean you had to like him, but yeah.

    18. KHCast

      KHCast

The problem with 4 for me is they almost immediately ignore the actual discussion at hand after Kanji’s story segment/level, and even go as far to lay on thick the heteronormative side, with him doubling down at times on him not “being like that” and his continued interest on Naoto. Heck, even the later games that include the 4 gang never bring up that part of his character in any meaningful way.

Regarding Yosuke’s constant bad jokes about the whole deal, eh, that’s a fair consideration, but given the history with how the “humor” in the series on these topics is presented, I don’t feel as if the intention was to make Yosuke come off insecure about anything. The previous game had the boys ridicule a trans person, so I doubt, especially given the era 4 was released in, they grew a sudden  conscience and wanted to make a statement with the way Yosuke heckled Kanji. I think they just thought it was funny and gave it the thumbs up.

    19. Wraith

      Wraith

Dataminers discovered Yosuke had a romance route that was removed from the final game. That pretty much changed my entire reading of the character, but since it's not actually IN the game then it's valid to just think the jokes are uncomfortable.

    20. KHCast

      KHCast

I think if anything, the fact the data was there and then removed, leaving the jokes intact, makes it all the more discomforting and blatant what kind of message they wanted presented end of the day vs if they never had that intended or created

  4. I’m about 99% certain the only other time we see the Forty Fathoms is in that Island of Misfit Badniks sequel, over a decade later.
  5. You know what I’d like a future Toy Story to explore? Bootleg toys.

Like, Buzz meets an incredibly shoddy knockoff version of himself or something.

    1. Milo

      Milo

that could honestly be a fun concept. it's something the series hasn't actually touched on yet to my knowledge (besides maybe some of the shorts, but IDK).

the main issue i think would be figuring how to really develop them into something suited for a film. the basic ideas for what you could do with the idea are arguably good enough for making another short, but you'd have to really brainstorm about making a movie where they are the core for the narrative.

it's kind of a expected idea but normal toys interacting with bootleg toys could easily lend themselves into a film that has its feet firmly planted into a particular genre (namely comedy or horror, in regards to mining the potential on how they differ from the "official" toys).

The fact that this script did not get picked up for a new film is a sin

    3. Milo

      Milo

@SupahBerry Apparently the TS3 we got did reuse some of the story beats that screenplay had (such as the main cast going to a daycare center, and having to escape a machine that destroys them). Although whether that was a conscious choice or not by the writers isn't exactly clear.

And TBH, given how it was being developed by what was effectively planned to be a Pixar Cheapquel studio, I'm honestly suspecting the script they had likely wasn't that good. I do believe however that Pixar, if they wanted to, could take the concept of recalled toys and rework it into something much better than whatever that screenplay would had done.

They should probably make it into a Toy Story Short, like the ones that came after Toy Story 3.

  6. ...what’s Honey got to do with this conversation?
  7. Funny, ‘cos it’s not showing up on Previews’ release list for this Wednesday.
  8. In the Doctor Who universe, we’re celebrating Sonic’s 30th anniversary right now.

  9. Here are the things I liked about Toy Story 4:

-Bow’s character was fleshed out nicely.

-The new characters are all pretty solid. Forky’s amusing, Ducky and Bunny are likeable, and I genuinely felt sorry for Gabby Gabby.

-The “inner-voice” thing they did with Buzz was really clever.

-Woody’s arc was really good, and rings true to how Andy described him to Bonnie, that he never gives up on you no matter what.

  10. I feel too crappy to celebrate properly, so all I can muster this year is a hearty HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONIC

  11. Because you’ll likely need to rely on the GTS. Which requires online. Which is behind a paywall.
  12. In Black and White (or B2W2, I forget), you could get hints on how to evolve certain Pokemon from Professor Juniper when you talk to her on the Xtransceiver. They should put something like that in the games again.
  13. By the time of 119, Bunnie had long since had her robot limbs replaced because her immune system was starting to reject them, which effectively made reversal impossible* because her new limbs were never organic to begin with. *barring anomalies like the Naugus magic that miraculously restored her post-Genesis.
