  1. It sounds like the normal theme but distorted.

  2. You know Manchester, now get ready for

    Womanbackim.

  3. Holy crap, I’ve just discovered that Pop (the UK channel) has started showing Dragon Ball Super, and it’s the Funimation dub!

    1. Ernest the Panda

      Ernest the Panda

The reason this surprises me so much is because there’s no “censored” version of the Funi dub as far as I know, and Pop is very much a kids channel, and showing anything even remotely adult on kids channels in the UK is normally forbidden thanks to Ofcom rules (the very same rules that are stopping Cartoon Network UK from having Adult Swim).

    2. Zaysho

      Zaysho

Any idea if the show was edited or redubbed to reduce mature language (which I think is the extent of what Super has)? Funi might have been approached to fix some lines for broadcast on that kind of network.

I’ll take a look when the next episode comes on.

      @Zaysho

It has been edited as there was a preexisting edited dub for Australia. If you go to a Dragon Ball Super on POP topic on Kanzenshuu, someone is currently listing all the changes along with video comparisons.

Response to my earlier reply since I can talk more about it now - I've seen a few episodes. For not having seen the first arc of Super for awhile, the edits weren't too bad. Some fights and such were cut down for time, but the post mentioned goes a lot more in-depth. From what I noticed -

      • Roshi's porn joke in the first episode is changed to only imply it was adult DVDs.
      • Hercule is used
      • There's a nasty Z-related cut that sticks out like a sore thumb (The flashback in Ep 2 where Vegeta punches Trunks has a bad cut that makes it obvious where the actual punch from Vegeta was censored).
      • A lot of King Kai's insults towards Goku was lost, with a lot of him calling Goku an idiot in Ep 5 being replaced with an exhausted "Goku..."
    6. Zaysho

      Zaysho

King Kai was in his right to call Goku an idiot though...

    7. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

Don't get me wrong - there's still some of it in tact. I can't remember off the top of my head, but there's moments where he calls Goku a big dummy, among other names. There's also an "Oh Crap" in tact when King Kai flings off into a panic.

“Crap” is becoming a bit more accepted in kids media these days. See also: IDW Sonic issue 8.

I thought Australia had the BangZoom dub?

    11. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

Nope, both Australia and Africa got the dub in the UK, according to some sources.

    12. Zaysho

      Zaysho

iirc the BangZoom dub was produced for Asian territories only. The UK and Australia have typically licensed the Funimation produced dubs these days, especially for home release.

This is a list of all the rounds of Pokemon Adventures’ X and Y chapter, showing off which rounds where published in which volumes in both the Japanese and US releases. The original Japanese collections are also the basis for just about every non-US version (being published in other parts of Asia, as well as certain parts of Europe, namely France, Germany, and Spain). The same approach is also currently being taken for the Sun and Moon chapter.

    tl;dr what the hell, Viz?!

  5. If Gamefreak were to decide to make a new core Pokemon title that returned to the old 2D sprite graphics to evoke even more nostalgia, which era would you most want it to return to?

I’d say Gen V’s. Their sprite graphics were the absolute best of all.

    1. Sean

      Sean

gen2 easily, I really like how animated those games' sprites were, especially compared to gen3 and 4 which had only two frames and tweening effects.

    2. Thigolf

      Thigolf

New sprites that really up the game.

If that's not an option, Gen 5 sprites for the enemy side and Gen 4 for the backsprite, though I'd love the latter to be more animated, too.

  6. Who would win at the Chinese box office:

-A brand-spanking new 4th instalment of one of the worlds most beloved CGI animated film franchises.

-An also pretty loved but less mainstream 2D animated movie from a decade-and-a-half ago.

    The answer may surprise you.

  7. Have you ever had something show up in a dream that’s a weird combination of two or more random elements you saw while you were awake?

Last night, before I went to sleep, I watched Blameitonjorge’s “15 worst Wii games” where one of the entries was an Alvin and the Chipmunks game. I also randomly looked up articles about this counterfeit Disneyland-like theme park that was open in China for a while.

You know what showed up in my dream after? Chinese bootleg Alvin and the Chipmunks toys.

    1. SenEDDtor Missile

I honestly thought you were going to say a bootleg haunted theme park with Alvin and the Chipmunk bootleg nightmare animatronics and toys tbh.

  9. I wanna take a moment to talk about Young Sheldon: the fact that so many people aren’t giving the show a chance because they hate TBBT makes me sad, because its relation to Big Bang couldn’t be anymore irrelevant to the shows quality.

Without the context of being a prequel series, it’s just a charming show about a child prodigy struggling to grow up in a religious home and state, with a style of comedy and writing that’s more comparable to sitcoms like Malcolm in the Middle. It has amusing characters (I love, love, LOVE Meema), and some touching moments, some episodes even touch upon some genuine issues (there’s one episode where Sheldon’s religious mother has a crisis of faith after the death of a young neighbour, and it’s handled in a very dignified and sympathetic way).

Also, Sheldon’s behaviour is overall just a hell of a lot more charming when it’s coming out of a child.

Seriously. Forget the Big Bang relation. It’s an underrated gem of a show.

I'm with you all the way on that front.  It's made my whole family laugh their pants off, despite its mother show barely etching out a chuckle from us.  And yes, Meema is MVP.

He’s used this kind of talk before but the fact that he’s talking to elected lawmakers crosses a line for me. Silencing opponents by slandering their heritage is not democratic. It’s some ultra nationalist BS.

This is the same line of shit he took against Obama to discredit him, so I shouldn’t be surprised.

  11. I love how in all these fan imaginings of what Ash will look like in the next anime series, they just stick him in the new male protagonists default outfit with absolutely no alterations made to accommodate Ash’s usual dress-sense or colour scheme.

A red jacket and grey hat? On Ash? Hahahaaaaa... I don’t think so.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

With SwSh due out in just a few months, aren't we expecting some actual news on the new anime series kinda soon? The sooner that they ditch the SuMo artstyle and the narrative returns to one of adventure instead of school, the better.

    2. Soniman

      Soniman

@Blue Blood considering SM is by far the most well received and popular the anime has been since the original series I very much doubt they'll get rid of all the trappings of this saga for SwSh

Honestly when we find out about the anime is a total crap shoot. The XY amine was revealed in July of 2013  while we didn't know anything of the SM anime until late September/Early October. So who knows

    3. Ernest the Panda

      Ernest the Panda

XY was revealed in July and premiered in October.

SM was revealed in September and premiered in November.

Seeing as SwSh will be a November release, probably September again.

    4. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

@SonimanIs that so? I'd like to see the numbers. Not that I'm doubting you, it's just that I just pay so little attention to the anime that I really wouldn't know what's popular and what's not. But personally speaking, the SuMo anime makes for pretty rubbish watching, and isn't nearly as exciting as the other series could be.

  16. You wanna know just how lazy/cheap the current Pokemon dubbers are?

During the XY series, the episode title cards in the Japanese version were unique in that the character depicted on the right there

    54-F61-E80-DC3-C-456-E-8768-94-E716-DD8-

would change depending on which of the four main characters the episode focused on (either Ash, or one of his three friends. Sometimes Pikachu, or even the Rocket trio would show up there).

In the dub, every single episode just uses the Ash variant, implying that they took the footage of the Ash version from one episode to create a blank template to put their English episode titles on, and simply used the same template in every episode, rather than going to the trouble of making variant templates.

The dubbers used the same version for all three seasons of the XY series, not even bothering to update it after Serena had her makeover.

    1. Zaysho

      Zaysho

That may be less the dub studio's fault and more OLM providing masters that only have one blank slate title card. Stuff like that happens.

    2. Ernest the Panda

      Ernest the Panda

Wouldn’t the masters provided just be the entire episodes with the title cards included, or are you saying all of those assets are in separate masters each (one for the actual episode, one just containing the title card that they have to insert manually, etc.)?

I guess it’s not too surprising since OLM haven’t exactly been angels themselves lately (that incredibly sloppy edit of Ash’s “crucifix” pose in the Team Flare arc, straight-up not bothering to do the incredibly simple edits necessary to make the Passimian episode acceptable for international audiences).

    3. Zaysho

      Zaysho

I wouldn't know for sure. I believe they are all on the same master so they probably have something prepared for licensing. I have read of instances where the original studio provides different masters with missing elements sometimes for whatever reason. TMS is pretty infamous for stuff like edited video in international releases of shows like Detective Conan. I'm not sure why it's done either when it comes to not providing all openings or title cards or preview audio or whatever else could go missing.

Like Ariel turning into bubbles at the end, except maybe the circumstances are different in that her deal to become human has an unknown side effect in that she'll turn into bubbles if she fails to woo the Prince or something, which makes Ursula using Ariel's voice and seducing the Prince even more disturbing?

I dunno, I only vaguely remember how the original story worked.

    3. Milo

      Milo

@SenEDDtor Missile From what I can recall (my parents actually have some very old "Children's Literature Classics" compilation of books), the mermaid didn't turn into bubbles at the end of the original story, but was instead rescued/resurrected into an angel-like being. The sea witch said that if she failed to win the Prince's heart, she would turn into foam on the sea. The mermaid turned into an angel however because she somehow ended up sacrificing herself to keep him happy or something (I believe it had something to do with the Prince fell in love with another girl --not the sea witch-- other than the mermaid and she didn't want to jeopardize that). I'll have to check.

e: Okay so I was technically wrong, the mermaid does turn into foam at the end of the original story. The angel-like being stuff (a "daughter of the air") was actually a revised version the writer did later, with a (slightly) more hopeful ending.

I was somewhat on the right track otherwise. The Prince marries another girl, and the sea witch says if that happens, the mermaid will die the following dawn. The mermaid's sisters arrive with a last-chance option that she can return to the sea as a mermaid if she stabs the Prince with a special knife. But the mermaid refuses to do that out of her love for him, and jumps into the sea instead.

    4. SenEDDtor Missile

      SenEDDtor Missile

Ah okay that's what it was. I remembered it was something bubbly, just not specifically that it was foam. As for the rest, interesting.
