  1. Ian may say that, but the game adaptations featured in the ATAP universe differ slightly from the games themselves, so it’s a different reality as far as I’m concerned.
  2. I really wish Knuckles could have his own set of supporting characters again. Preferably like what he had in post-SGW Archie.

@Ferno this can, weirdly enough, be annoying in either scenario (when you clearly have just drawn the picture, or when you share a random picture from the internet)

  4. I also have a signed copy of Mega Drive from SoS ‘16 ^^ I have a small collection of original Archie Sonic pages, all but one of them by Tracey. The three pages I prize the most are the final page of SU#25 (Enerjack and his wall of husks), that amazing double-page spread of Sonic’s entrance in the All-Stars Transformed tie-in comic, and one of the unpublished pages from 291 (a very generous birthday gift from my uncle and aunt). One of my rarest non-one-of-a-kind Sonic comic items? Would probably have to be my issue of Corocoro Special from 2003 that contains one of the original serialised printings of a Dash and Spin chapter. May post images (and maybe more items) later.

  8. You wanna know just how lazy/cheap the current Pokemon dubbers are?

During the XY series, the episode title cards in the Japanese version were unique in that the character depicted on the right there

    54-F61-E80-DC3-C-456-E-8768-94-E716-DD8-

would change depending on which of the four main characters the episode focused on (either Ash, or one of his three friends. Sometimes Pikachu, or even the Rocket trio would show up there).

In the dub, every single episode just uses the Ash variant, implying that they took the footage of the Ash version from one episode to create a blank template to put their English episode titles on, and simply used the same template in every episode, rather than going to the trouble of making variant templates.

The dubbers used the same version for all three seasons of the XY series, not even bothering to update it after Serena had her makeover.

That may be less the dub studio's fault and more OLM providing masters that only have one blank slate title card. Stuff like that happens.

    2. Ernest the Panda

      Ernest the Panda

Wouldn’t the masters provided just be the entire episodes with the title cards included, or are you saying all of those assets are in separate masters each (one for the actual episode, one just containing the title card that they have to insert manually, etc.)?

I guess it’s not too surprising since OLM haven’t exactly been angels themselves lately (that incredibly sloppy edit of Ash’s “crucifix” pose in the Team Flare arc, straight-up not bothering to do the incredibly simple edits necessary to make the Passimian episode acceptable for international audiences).

    3. Zaysho

      Zaysho

I wouldn't know for sure. I believe they are all on the same master so they probably have something prepared for licensing. I have read of instances where the original studio provides different masters with missing elements sometimes for whatever reason. TMS is pretty infamous for stuff like edited video in international releases of shows like Detective Conan. I'm not sure why it's done either when it comes to not providing all openings or title cards or preview audio or whatever else could go missing.

Like Ariel turning into bubbles at the end, except maybe the circumstances are different in that her deal to become human has an unknown side effect in that she'll turn into bubbles if she fails to woo the Prince or something, which makes Ursula using Ariel's voice and seducing the Prince even more disturbing?

I dunno, I only vaguely remember how the original story worked.

All I can recall of the original story is the tragic ending.

@SenEDDtor Missile From what I can recall (my parents actually have some very old "Children's Literature Classics" compilation of books), the mermaid didn't turn into bubbles at the end of the original story, but was instead rescued/resurrected into an angel-like being. The sea witch said that if she failed to win the Prince's heart, she would turn into foam on the sea. The mermaid turned into an angel however because she somehow ended up sacrificing herself to keep him happy or something (I believe it had something to do with the Prince fell in love with another girl --not the sea witch-- other than the mermaid and she didn't want to jeopardize that). I'll have to check.

e: Okay so I was technically wrong, the mermaid does turn into foam at the end of the original story. The angel-like being stuff (a "daughter of the air") was actually a revised version the writer did later, with a (slightly) more hopeful ending.

I was somewhat on the right track otherwise. The Prince marries another girl, and the sea witch says if that happens, the mermaid will die the following dawn. The mermaid's sisters arrive with a last-chance option that she can return to the sea as a mermaid if she stabs the Prince with a special knife. But the mermaid refuses to do that out of her love for him, and jumps into the sea instead.

Ah okay that's what it was. I remembered it was something bubbly, just not specifically that it was foam. As for the rest, interesting.

  24. Well this is a pleasant surprise: the latest Japanese ending theme is a new version of Type: Wild. Wonder if this has anything to do with the fact it has a bit of Kaze to issho ni at the beginning and the remake of that song is coming out on Friday.
