While there is a lot of divisiveness over the Sonic cast, I do appreciate that SEGA never went the cheap pandering route that say, Hanna Barbara did with Scrappy Doo, just going 'You're right, they ARE crap, we hate them too. See? We're on your side.'
Sure they pushed for Solo Sonic and the expanded cast isn't used a lot now but they are at least still acknowledged. Hell they refused to throw away even Big, they just made him into a meme and now people love him. There he is on Sonic Channel's wallpaper this very month. He ain't going anywhere.

In hindsight, one thing I think makes Eggman a great villain is that, while not 100% evil and something of a pitiable clown, he is just all out spitefully persistent to those who oppose him. Games like SEGASonic Arcade and S3K are just a study in how he'll throw ANYTHING at Sonic and his allies until he has zero resources left, even attempting a fight and 'keep away' with Hyper Sonic, just refusing to give away the Master Emerald.
I think this something his early 3D games got wrong by having him a punching bag to loads of other antagonists and even some comic relief (though we still get glimpses of it in Adventure 1, trying to off Chaos and blow up Station Square, simply because if they won't bow to him they're better off charred carcasses).
The Generations onwards games definitely click this despite the underwhelming narrative,  how he'll literally destroy time fabric itself just to take over (while also easily neutralising several characters that treated him like a mere nuisance or patsy in the past like Shadow, Rouge and the Chaotix), how he still does everything to become top dog again when another villain tries to usurp his place in Lost Worlds and Mania. He demands to be treated as THE bad guy. I never feel like Sonic is 'bullying' Eggman, even at his most pathetic, he just keeps coming at Sonic and giving him the middle finger.

One potential plus side to S3K being in copyright limbo right now is that it MIGHT push for rereleases to find other more obscure Sonic titles to rebalance.
We sadly might not get SEGA AGES Sonic 3K but it'd be cool if they went for CD, Chaos, or even R instead.

Looking back at Satam, I'm very hit and miss about it as an adaptation. On one hand, I think it's one of the best attempts at a 'darker and edgier' adaptation because it still targets the core dynamic, Sonic vs Robotnik and nature being threatened and possessed by overambitious technology/industry. This is something even the actual games' own semi-adaptation Forces seems to lose. I also like how the conceptual stuff and the pilot episode do actually retool stuff from the games, like the animal friends and badniks.
However everything beyond that points seems to slowly lose track of that (Season Three sounds like it would have been more primarily 'Sally vs Naugus' and 'monarchy vs magic' being the true players), and a lot of the time, it almost seems to be actively avoiding adapting anything from the games even when it would be convenient. It has a Robotnik space shuttle in one episode but it isn't the Death Egg, the heroes make a plane but it isn't the Tornado, they go to a Floating Island but it isn't Angel Island, let alone any sign of Knuckles, they have power enhancing gems that give super powered forms but they aren't Chaos Emeralds. Kids must have felt seriously copped out back then, especially since its sister show AoSth, despite its own looseness, still had odd moments of going 'well hey, this is kinda similar to that thing in the games, may as well adapt it'.
The only exceptions seem to be Sally and Robotnik being made SLIGHTLY more akin to their game counterparts. Game Guy might also be a loose Spinball nod.

I've been looking back at odd episodes of SatAm recently and noticed, while Bunnie was always kinda underused, Season One was pretty concise for giving her loads of tidbits of agency, even with the obligatory 'Worf Effect' moments and 'Sonic saving the day with a power ring' formula (and even in those they at least bothered to show her putting up a fight or showing why she got neutralised).
Plus she did slapstick with her robot limbs, which is always refreshing with a 90s cartoon female.
It's kinda weird how Season Two almost completely forgot she had robot powers at all. People often blame Dulcy for this, but the thing is, Dulcy barely got to do much either.

Is it strange that of all recurring character archetypes, it's not often comic relief or screw up protagonists that get on my nerves as often as straight men do? I just find myself REALLY averse to characters who are always right, and don't have flaws they have to accept and overcome, especially if they are otherwise too dull, too complacent, too priggish, or just designated the straight man even when they're wrong. Usually the only straight men I like are ones that suffer a healthy number of role reversals. I insist dynamics have an even handedness.
Antoine doesn't bug me much, but Sally drives me crazy for example, and I always unhealthily savoured those times in The Simpsons where Lisa or Marge screwed up and Homer and Bart were the sane ones. On the other hand maybe I'm just mal chauvinistic.

E-122-Psi got a reaction from Big Panda for a status update, Earnest the Panda's recent post about TV show based movies made me realise something
Earnest the Panda's recent post about TV show based movies made me realise something about how I rate franchise-based animated films.
I tend to instinctively perceive a good animated film based on how well it can match the aesthetics of my childhood (which is mostly the 80s/90s Disney/Don Bluth films). Just this dynamism only a movie that calibre can have, much more lavish and expressive animation, usually a story with darker and more suspenseful stakes, and the characters will often be portrayed in a much more emotional and raw manner than usual. It was usually a little uneasy for me to watch due to this upgrade, but I felt the movie succeeded if it made me feel this way.
The Rugrats and Ducktales Movies always enticed me for this reason for example, while the Recess and Simpsons ones didn't, they just felt like beefed up episodes to me. It isn't just limited to TV series either, sometimes spin offs of higher budget works can do this as well (eg. some of the better Disney sequels like Rescuers Down Under, Bambi II, Pooh's Grand Adventure and The Tigger Movie involve adding this 'dynamism' they had in the 80s/90s).
It's odd because turning a franchise into a big 'epic' is usually something I'm cynical towards. The nearest to the Sonic franchise taking the 'big damn movie' direction and me appreciating it for example is Sonic 3 and Knuckles compared to the previous games.
