Hogfather brought this up in a status as a joke but honestly, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense... I'd actually be pretty okay with the Avatar being in this game?
It'd be extra cool if you could import your creation from Forces if you're playing on the same system, but otherwise, everyone says how the Avatar would've fit better in a spin-off game - well, here we are, a spin-off game with a story mode.  The Avatar would be perfect for that, and would allow all Sonic characters to be opponents in the story mode.  I'd certainly prefer that over being forced to play as Sonic, though obviously being allowed to choose whatever character you like (or doing it Riders style where each stage has a locked-in character) would be fine too.  Of course the only awkwardness with an avatar player character for the story would be whether they imply that Sonic knows them or not.  They'd have to make a decision to imply that the avatar was the one who fought alongside in Forces or not, which would create awkwardness for players who want to make a new avatar or players who want to re-use/re-create their Forces Avatar depending on whether the writers decide to let Sonic "know" the avatar character or not in the story.
All that baggage aside... I'd love to play as my Avatar for online races at least, they always made a lot of sense for a more social game (compared to the limited way you can interact with other players' avatars in Forces).

Looks... disappointing to be honest with you. The artstyle is again following the slightly more cartoony look of Lost World and Forces, rather than the realstic but fantastical stylings of Generations and Colours. I'm growing to dislike this artstyle. In general though the graphics just don't look too hot. In this art style, Planet Wisp looks artificial and unappealing. There's none of the beauty it had in Colours/Generations.
And it's a shame to see that, despite hyping up a Sonic R connection, that this looks like it's solely going to a car racer. If there is going to any foot-racing involved, it's going to play second-fiddle. But I'm honestly not really expecting it to be there. 15 characters is a woefully low number too. There's bound to be a bunch of fan-favourites missing. Getting rid of the SEGA characters and not going wild with the Sonic character cast feels like a huge missed opportunity. And they're seriously using an Egg Pawn over an actual character? That's weak.
On the plus side, ASR and ASRT are fantastic games. I don't think for a second that Sumo are going to drop the ball with a  sub-par game (assuming it is being developed by them, of course). The team racing aspect of it sounds interesting, as do the Wisps; finally the Wisps are making a justified appearance. I'll look forward to hearing and seeing more when it's announced officially. It's a poor start though...

It actually totally makes sense that they'd use the wisps as the items.

Yeah, as one of the many, many people who were annoyed at how Classic Sonic was shoehorned into Forces, I wouldn’t mind seeing him in this racing spin-off at all, assuming it’s not plot-heavy. I mean, if Mario Kart 8 can have four different variations of Mario all racing together at the same time, I don’t see how a spin-off racing game with two different versions of Sonic is the worst thing ever. With that being said, I think spin-offs should be the only exception to having both Modern and Classic Sonic together in the same game at this point.

Alright but that doesn't address my actual answer. (That and Adventure 2 wasn't exactly a literary great, either)
Mania happened because instead of complaining that a new Classic game was "their right" or "they were owed it", the likes of Christian Whitehead, Brad Flick, Simon Thomley, Hunter Bridges, etc etc, actually made stuff. And pitched stuff. And after many years, got stuff made.

    You got one.

    It just sucked.
Actual answer - technically, the fans aren't owed anything. It's not a right in the slightest, and it's sure as hell not enough to suit its own timeline. The franchise is a mess of 'pillars' enough, we don't need another one that's nigh identical to Modern anyway.
Mania happened because the Classic fans actually worked for it.

When are the Sonic Labyrinth fanboys going to get what they deserve? I propose a 57th timeline so we can finally get more games about Eggman stealing Sonic's shoes.

    Uh... huh?

Actually, this was amongst Ohshima's proposed redesigns. Essentially, a slightly tweaked Classic Sonic. I know this because I asked the damn guy. It was accidentally used in the SEGA title SpikeOut. Not necessarily the only one proposed, but I've literally never heard of whatever you just pulled up.
Uekawa's style is still very obviously done with the involvement of Ohshima, hence the far more noodly, exaggerated style common with many of Ohshima's works. It's likely why Uekawa's own style has become more restrained in the years since Ohshima's left SEGA.

Fletch reacted to Osmium in Even Yuji Naka didnt want a cutesy funny Sonic
This is correct, and just a look at the concept art for Sonic 1 solidifies this.

He looks rough, confident, and full of himself. He takes no bullshit.
But this just means that Sonic was meant to be a little rougher in characterization, and we don't know the extent originally planned. I don't think they were intending something like a StC style Sonic for the main series. That's about it. This doesn't really implicate a darker, grittier series at all.
The OVA actually portrays Sonic in this light to an extent. I'm pretty sure Naka and Oshima supervised the OVA during production, so if you want to know what they meant by a not cutesy Sonic, you can think of the "shut up, Tails!!" Sonic we got in the OVA.

Sonic should not be cute and innocent.
    "
—I noticed that the Dreamcast version of Sonic has a slightly different atmosphere/feeling compared to the earlier illustrations.
Naka: Sonic was originally supposed to be this impertinent, cheeky character. However, once he blew up in popularity, his image gradually morphed into something more cutesy. Sonic has now appeared in 29 games across different platforms, and Sonic merchandise and goods have proliferated around the world. Because of that, we (his creators) kind of lost some control over his image. So when it came time to do Sonic Adventure in 1998, we were worried that if he became too cutesy, he would end up just like every other cute, cloying character mascot. So for the Dreamcast, we deliberately tried to strengthen his original “bad boy” image.
—There definitely is that phenomenon with characters where once the merchandise starts pumping out, their image starts to become more cutesy.
Naka: Right, once the plushies and stuff start coming out. It’s all a big dilemma for the character designer. When someone says “What’s wrong with cuteness…”, I point to Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty already owns the market in cuteness, and if Sonic heads too far down that path, I don’t think he will last very long as a character. We were thinking about the lifespan of the character over 10 or even 20 years… and we didn’t want to do anything that would kill him off in the long-term.
    "

Had it not been for the upgrade of Sonic Adventure, I think Sonic would have a much shorter lifespan as a franchise, and would have a much smaller fandom.

I've wondered for a while. How is this topic not blown up like the Dragon ball one? This anime is the highlight of the late spring / summer. The hype levels in these fights have people on the edge of their seat. And yes it is another shonen anime, it's done extremely well.

There we go! New characters revealed!

I did say above that it was most likely Kirishima and Jirou would return because they were playable in the 3DS fighter, and it's good to see Tokoyami finally in a Hero fighter.

And some footage of Uraraka in action! Based on gameplay footage and screen shots, it's going to be incredibly fun using her to make opponents float.

So apparently, if a girl shows admiration for another gal, that automatically makes her gay:

Except it doesn't, and this is coming from someone that actually ships Amy (canonically the straightest character in the franchise) and Blaze. : P
Something that annoys me about this type of reaction from the fans and audience that I see online is that it almost feels like fetishizing same-sex relations as something trendy, or worse, treating it like it being superior to hetero relationships or judging the quality of a fictional work (comics, TV shows, movies, etc) based on wether such relationships are represented or not instead of focusing on what it is supposed to drive them: character interactions and how well their chemistry is executed.

Uverworld single for "Odd Future" just dropped yesterday in Japan and my copy arrived today!

Single comes with 4 songs on it:
    1. Odd Future
    2. Plot
    3. Core Stream
    4. Odd Future (Short ver.)

Goodness do I looooooove, Odd Future! The full version literally is a Jazzy dance party song, and it sounds so great.

Say what you want about it not fitting Hero Academia or the arc itself, but as a Uverworld song it's really darn good (Would say it's my absolute favorite song from them now, even topping classics from them like "Chance", "Color of the Heart", or "D-Technolife".) It definitely feels very unique. I'll have to give the other two songs a listen to later since I'm too busy still jamming to "Odd Future".

Yeah, I was afraid she was gonna be nerfed because of her "story-breaking powers" or just show up and leave. I actually like Blaze here, and I'm glad SEGA understands that she doesn't deserve to be treated as she has in the past.
