comic321 reacted to T-Min in Dr. Strangehog, or How I Learned to Stop Being Cynical and Just Enjoy Sonic Games (aka The Cynicism Topic)
All right, SSMB bros, I gotta get this out there once and for all. We're in a dark place. A dark, dark place. And since we're starting to speculate about the series' next move, I feel like we've got to address this darkness. Indulge me for a moment, won't you?

It's no secret that SSMB is very, very cynical about the series' current direction, which has been much to the chagrin of the more idealistic members. Even when we aren't making wisecracks about how far down the crapper this series has gone, how close we are to cutting ties with the series altogether, or how little we still even care, there's a bit of a cloud that hangs over a good majority of non-nostalgic Sonic discussion - especially with regards to the series' current state and its future. It's not a new development either. The "Sonic sucks" attitude at least traces its roots to 2012, as I can recall - ironically not long after the release of the well-received Generations, but possibly in light of the widely panned Sonic 4: Episode II. Then Lost World and Rise of Lyric happened, and, well, here we are now. And of course this isn't factoring individual members' opinions of these games into account. There are members who enjoyed S4:E2, a handful of adamant defenders of Lost World (myself among them), and even a couple here and there who consider Rise of Lyric to have received far more hate than it deserved. What we're looking at here, however, is the big picture.

So how did we get here? What really went wrong? We came through the fallout of Sonic 06 and the fallout of Sonic Unleashed - and even Unleashed has its fans. Why is an expression of any positive Sonic-related desire followed by a sigh of resignation? Why is there so little faith?

We have the obvious reason, of course. Lost World disappointed many and Rise of Lyric had a reception comparable to 06 itself. Then there are the other smaller but no less significant reasons. People enjoyed Generations, yes, but it seemed to imply a stagnation. There was nothing to appeal to those who wanted deeper storylines, more playable characters, or more varied gameplay - and the attempts that Lost World and Rise of Lyric made to assauge any of those complaints were seen by many as botched. Colors was received well in its day, but is seen as very mixed in hindsight due to its unorthodox design and power-up emphasis. The general opinion seems to be that the only time this series succeeds is if it's very safe - if it even succeeds then. Many were excited by Lost World's change of pace only to be let down by it on release. Some were even looking forward to Rise of Lyric's character-switching and greater plot emphasis only to be let down even more severely. The writing quality of the series is hotly debated, and those who want Sonic to be anything more than a silly cartoon are left wanting.

With it all laid out right there, it's really not hard to see why we, as a forum and as a fanbase, are for the most part quite cynical. Those are the general statements. So I guess here are the personal questions: Do you think this is deserved? How much faith do you have in Sonic right now? Do you agree with the cynicism, and if so, what would it really take to restore your faith? Would it just take a good game on the level of Generations - polished, pretty, well-designed, and fun, but ultimately safe - or do you need something more ambitious and grand to reignite your interest? Do you think that the supposedly well-received games like Colors and Generations were ultimately part of the problem in and of themselves, or that they simply weren't enough? Or do you think they marked a renaissance and that what came afterwards didn't negate it? Is there anything specific you want from the series that you think you will get at some point in the future? Did you, perhaps, enjoy Lost World and/or Rise of Lyric, and therefore very little of this applies to you at all? I guess what it all boils down to is: Do you think the cynicism is justified (wholly or partially) or not, and why?

Personally, I have higher hopes than many. The Boom games slipped off my radar fairly easily, and I turned more of my attention to the show, which I do enjoy quite a bit. I see them basically as very poor spinoffs - spinoffs that unfortunately carried a lot of importance, but spinoffs nonetheless. Safe or not, I love Generations to death, and Lost World left me pleasantly surprised (my grievances with the story notwithstanding). If anything, I feel like Lost World showed that Sonic Team are willing to experiment with new and creative ideas, and while flawed, I believed the experiment was nonetheless rewarding. (I would go into more detail on my SLW thoughts, but that would probably be better suited to another topic.) That gives me more faith that whatever comes next will branch out a bit more, but I also think that the current-gen technology might encourage Sonic Team to go for something a lot bigger than Generations. Sonic Unleashed, I feel, is representative of what Sonic Team can really do when they go all-out for a next-gen experience, and I think they learned enough from that game's flaws (and maybe even Lost World's) to know what not to do. Plus, the fact that the next Sonic game will (evidently) go for a completely new gameplay style intrigues me. In the end, I guess I'm prepared to at least indulge whatever they throw my way, as long as it's not, well, broken. I took to Lost World, after all, so I guess you could say I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to Sonic.

But those are just my thoughts. What about you guys?

Also cool that Ian can actually give the Hooligans original backstory. I'd love to see what he can come up with.

I took the time to write this all up so; here are some of the more juicy tidbits:

-More villains independent of the Eggman Empire will be introduced "slowly but surely".
-Relic and Eclipse didn't exist in the old reality. For some reason.
-The reason for the continuity confusion in Pirate Plunder Panic was, as many speculated, because of the Super Genesis Wave making everything fuzzy.
-The events of Sonic Generations played out the same even without Unleashed having happened: Sonic simply travels forward in time to Spagonia rather than back.
-Ian would jump at the chance to write for the Sonic Boom TV series.
-Sonic Boom was planned to be in Worlds Unite from the beginning.
-Ian doesn't plan on importing many of the AoStH cast.
-The Super Genesis Wave literally destroyed Sonic's multiverse. Sol Zone is an exception because the power of the Jewelled Sceptre protected it.
-Relic is older than Knuckles (16 or over)
-Unless the higher-ups decide otherwise, Ian considers Knuckles Chaotix canon.
-There are three known currency's being used on Sonic's world: the Kingdom of Acorn use Mobiums, the United Federation and various other nations use dollars, and the Eggman Empire has EggBucks, but nobody uses them.
-The decision to do Worlds Unite didn't shake up Ian's plans as badly as Worlds Collide did: the titles will reach a nice breaking off point when the crossover starts, and they'll be primed to launch into their next big arcs too.
-Tiara and Gazebo are off-limits (Ian sounded particularly frustrated over this...)
-Rosie is still alive and well in the present day.
-The comic will be exploring the multiverse again, just not in the same way as the old continuity. Worlds Unite will be touching on it.
-Sonic 06 happened (but retconned itself). Games Ian doesn't consider canon at all include the Sonic Drift games, Sonic R and Sonic's Schoolhouse (though what did you expect ;P)
-We'll be seeing lots of Silver very soon. Not all of it written by Ian.
-Ian would like to delve into the backstory of the Hooligans, and he's allowed to do so too, so that's a plus.
-Ian plans to bring back the Battle Bird Armada.

Why does he feel the need to write so many beats? In screenwriting 101 you are literally told to refrain from using beats unless it can enhance the scene by making it more dramatic or something along those lines. And that's just only using one beat. Ken here is using 4 on one page for basic exposition. But I guess its because he is such a professional, he can use as many beats as he wants since his way is the "right" way.

Ugh. More Penders nonsense. He has the nerve to brag about SEGA getting more flak about Boom than about LSC? At least SEGA has something produced, Penders! That moron still doesn't even have a single book out yet, while Sonic Boom already has 2 games, a ton of figures ready to be shipped, & a television show ready to be released! WHAT DO YOU HAVE, PENDERS?!?!?! NOTHING!!! & Frankly, I'd take Sonic Boom anyday over LSC/Lara-Su '06.

From the first one, definitely Sonic sassing Eggman about Burnbot.

From the second one, The exchange between Sonic and Knuckles seems to be a fairly popular one. The way Roger Craig Smith delivered the blunt tone of "No Knuckles..." was just perfect.

Though I was quite pleased to see that Boom!Sonic would retain his big brother instincts towards Tails with the  "I was just trying to protect you..." line. Even if we know Sonic starts off as a loner in the game, the fact that he manages to warm up to Tails and be a surrogate brother to him makes me happy.

If Boom goes way beyond Sega's expectations, even in Japan then yeah...SEGA Sonic will be in trouble. But would I mind? Considering SEGA Sonic is going down the tubes? I don't know. If that happens though, it will most likely be because of the TV series and not the Wii U title because of so much negativity.

But 'the negativity' surrounding the RoL will be thrown out the window if the sales for the game also turn out pretty good.

I should note before anything else. I have a tendancy to wall of text when I'm trying to explain something. Anyway, I wanted to be the first one to mention this but someone beat me to it.

This game...... have been vastly different on the two playthroughs I've done with it. When I first got this game, I was still under all the terrible critisism this game was getting from professional reviewers... *COUGHIGNCOUGH*!!!! Oh where was I? Oh yea, lost world. When I got this game, I actually took those reviews to heart. I wanted the game simply because I wanted to try it out for myself. I saw some other reviews that say this game was good or ok but they were all talking about the Wii U version. The 3DS version seemed to have almost universal negativity. Some stages were terrible, the special stages we're TERRIBLE and that snowman was FREAKIN GAWD AWFUL! I went into this game with all of those things taken to heart and decided that I would go about this game differently. I would try to do each level as perfectly as I could. Take all the BS I could and just get it out of the way as soon as possible.  So I did.... and I had some fun. I didn't do any level absolutely perfectly and I reset so many times I had 99 lives before the desert levels.... and still reset but I had fun. No level in particular really was bad to me. I mean yea I didn't like 3D Drill the level (Zone 3 act 3), or Zone 6 act 3 (the rocket level) and the special stages we're extremely tiring after a while; but other than that, I had fun playing through the game. That said, I swore I would never reset it.... and I promply broke that promise a few months later.

My second playthrough was ok but alot more things stood out. I think it was because I was used to the levels and therefore could notice more of the BS as I was going through them that some of them went from being meh to downright frustrating. I went from not liking the 3D drill level to outright hating it with a bloody passion. It took me so long to get all the red rings. I decided to get them all in one go because I didn't like the level and didn't want to come back to it. It took me several hours to do so and i hated every minute of it. The snowman level, Zone 4 act 3, went from being meh to being bad simply because I hated that beginning part with the penguins sliding around all over the place and you needing to get that snowball big while avoiding them. The snowman itself was about 10 times more annoying on the second playthrough. I actually used Super Sonic on a few levels. Namely zone 6 act 3, the Rocket level. I didn't wanna deal with that one again so I just Super Sonic'd my way through it. Still took me like an hour though to do perfectly . Speaking of Super Sonic the Special Stages were.... surprisingly more comfortable on the second playthough. I guess it was just because I was used to it. Ending on a positive note, my most favorite stage right now is zone 5 act 2, the grind level. It's a suprisingly fast paced level with lots of different twists and turns and can be a real challenge to get down right without being outright frustrating. Even when the level tries to make you think it's slowing down by killing robots, depending on what you do you can kill them extremely easily or just outright pass them. I found a path where where I only had to kill a horde of robots once which I had the lightning wisp to which made it extremely easy, got all the Red Rings doing it, AND got 999 rings. I also absolutly love the lightning wisp.

All in all, I enjoyed Lost world 3DS. It's not perfect, the 3D drill and snowman level and both go F*** themselves, the special stages are tiring if your not used to them, and you are NOT gonna get though this game without losing a few lives but overall I had fun. The controls were easy to get used to after a little while. The parkor took a little longer but it was no big deal. The graphics look good and overall it's not a terribly frustrating time apart from a few instances. Try not to go into this game expecting Terrible or great. It's good. A bit polarising depending on your tastes but good.

I actually enjoy Sonic Advance 3 despite the fact it seems to be unpopular amongst the fanbase. The Hub World, Chao Collecting, music and some of the level design sucks. But, had fun with it and would say that it is one of my favourite 2D Sonic games.

Sonic and the Black Knight has been one of my favorite games in the series ever since I first played it a couple years ago. While the gameplay isn't the most stellar, I actually really enjoy it. Swinging the Wiimote like a sword is quite fun to be perfectly honest, even if my arm did get sore on the final boss. I find the level design to be charming, the soundtrack to be good, and the whole medieval setting to be quite charming. And, as I've mentioned in much before, I absolutely adore the storyline and I find Sonic's characterization in particular to be a great facet of it.

Sonic R is might have slipshod controls, poor level design and have the most unbalanced roster I've ever come across in a racing game. But it's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine and for those times I break out Sonic Gems collection with the intention of playing through Sonic CD, I sometimes find myself drawn to R as well.

So, I look at the Babylon Rouges & Team Hooligan (Nack, Bean, & Bark) & I started thinking: One of these groups kinda remind me of Team Rocket. I mean, Jet & Nack kinda remind me of Jessie as in terms of being in charge. Bean & Storm would seriously be like Meowth or Wobuffet. Bark would be a smart-but-silent James. & Wave is a combination of Jessie & Meowth together.
