I don't really mind criticism towards the new Pokemon games, but I do think some people (not necessarily here as I haven't been following the topic on this forum) may have had too high of an expectation? This is Pokemon's first console game, but a bunch of people on Twitter seemed to want some giant, open world BotW styled game. And, maybe it's just me, but Pokemon never really seemed to be a AAA series. Which never bothered me! I liked Diamond, White, Y and Sun. But it hasn't ever struck me as anything more than just a fun game series.

It's a couple of things.
1) Game Freak's statements have made people skeptical. Specifically saying that they're working on animations
2) For better or worse, people put tons of emotional value on being able to transfer their Pokemon from game to game; not having that feature was inevitably going to be controversial.
3) Game Freak has had a history of cutting content from their games, so this was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back.
The game looks fine mind you, but I think people are just really burnt on how they've been handling the series and its lack of innovation in recent years.
