PKGaming got a reaction from Gresh11990 in Team Sonic Racing - Upcoming Sonic Racing Game
For the longest time, I've been wanting them to make another Sonic racing game that doesn't rely on cars. Like, make something interesting out of the Boost mechanic and incorporate it into a racing game setting.
But from the looks of it, this isn't like that.

This is why I've never been that harsh on tutorials and games with slow openings that ease the player in. I know there are tons of gamers like Egoraptor that hate tutorials and think they're treating you like an idiot, but that's only because they're experienced gamers. Some casual gamers need a tutorial. They won't just pick up on things through experimentation and observation. Not everyone works that way.

Yeah, I also think Mania is, while amazing, pretty easy. But I think it's just because I'm an experienced Sonic player. I can say it's pretty easy and forgiving, but then I watch someone like ZackScott struggle with the game and call it difficult because he's not familiar with Sonic.

Of course everyone has different tastes. It's just that, because we already know Arin's tastes, is why him enjoying the game is surprising. If he didn't care for Colors, Generations, or even Mania, I definitely didn't expect him to enjoy Forces. Unless the Avatar creation and Wispons are just that amusing. And to be fair, creating a dumb looking Avatar and seeing it in cutscenes is the one thing I'm most looking forward to when I finally get a chance to play.

Definitely agree. Sonic 2 is also one of my least favorites because I feel parts of the level design past Chemical Plant is too punishing. Shitty enemy and trap placement actually discourages me from going fast in that game. In Mania, whenever there's an obvious speed or bouncing section, I go into it knowing I can trust Mania not to send me hurling into an enemy, spikes, wall, or bottomless pit. The fact that it's widescreen also helps so I can see what's ahead of me in enough time to react.

I think Mania feels different from the classics because it took all the good stuff from them and condensed them into a single game. I believe it's better designed than any classic game, even though I would still rank S3K higher than it due to personal preference.
Sonic 2 is actually one of my least liked Sonic games so I can't say I agree on that part; I consider its design to be overly punishing (not dissimilar to the Advance games' design) and there are way too many not-fun parts of that game for me even when I am going fast. This is coming from someone who thinks Sonic 1 is more brilliant than most people give it credit for and I actually don't mind Marble or Labyrinth Zones at all.

Honestly, Infinite is kinda pathetic. I just see him as this big baby who threw a temper tantrum because some guy he just met called him weak. So he gets Eggman to upgrade him with new power and starts terrorizing innocents and destroying cities to make himself feel like a big man. It's kinda funny actually.

You are aware that a game bombing isn't just a "oh well let's learn from our mistakes and try again!" situation, right? There's actual consequences from a game bombing that can effect this series for years to come. For one, depending on the budget that Forces was given, if the game bombs that badly, then one possible outcome is that SEGA will slice the funding for a next game in the series. Why? Because it's not financially safe to take that kind of momentary risk again. The last time this kind of risk was taken lead to complete and utter failure by all means.
The exact thing happened to the Ratchet and Clank series. All 4 One, which was a full-budgeted game decided to try be experimental with it's gameplay and focus on a co-op new gameplay style. Obviously, this didn't work very well and it didn't sell the greatest. This lead to the next three games in the series not getting anywhere near full-budget. Full Frontal Assault was a cheap PSN title which was a co-op tower defence game, Into the Nexus was a way more shorter finale to the Future series, and the movie reboot, while pretty great and closer to a full-budget title was shorter and didn't hit the same quality of earlier titles in the series.
I get what you mean here. That if the game fails, or if the reviewers dislike it, Sonic Team will have to take a critical eye to themselves and fix something or other. But saying "i hope it bombs" has far more consequences than just that. A game failing, especially after a trainwreck like Rise of Lyric could potentially cause far more damage than good. But the game doesn't actively have to get to that point to make that critical restructure happen. Assassin's Creed Unity sold alright enough and the utter humiliation Ubisoft got from it's issues and bugs were enough to force them to reshape and restructure themselves with Syndicate and Origins.
To be honest, I think Celestia could be onto something with this:
The boost gameplay isn't something that's explicitly doomed and can't be made to work. Generations showed that the standard design things that people like in Sonic such as multiple pathways, rewarding skill through these pathways, and such could work. Generations' levels also had a decent length and replay value, the main problem was just the fact there wasn't many stages in the game to begin with. But the sheer fact SEGA feel the need to keep tossing in multiple gameplay styles and such only boost the problems further. As the saying goes, a jack of all trades is master of none. When focus has to go onto three characters, that means none of them can really get much focus.
I honestly wish SEGA would just stop using Classic Sonic as some kind of clutch. I'm a Modern fan. I like Advance and Rush over Sonic 1, 2, and CD. Generations is quite possibly my favourite in the series, despite the game's shortcomings because Modern's gameplay is so much fun IMO. I just wish I could get a game that focuses on what they're trying to sell to people in the modern titles as opposed to trying to cram shit in to appeal to everyone, especially in the same year which had Mania to already appeal to Classic fans. All it ends up doing is taking focus off other characters.

Can I request that we please NOT spoil Super Mario Odyssey in this thread? I'm still playing it and I came into this thread for info on Sonic, NOT Mario. I'm not even sure why we're comparing the two anyway.
And don't come at me with that whole "It's Mario. What's to spoil?" BS... You can't just decide what's worth spoiling for others and what's not.

It seems in terms of the boost style, internally there's now two STYLES of boost gameplay.
The Generations/Unleashed method of actually designing levels with a good sense of flow, the ratio of 2D/3D being either equal or in 3D's favor, the 3D it self having actual depth, layers, platforming, etc and the 2D being considerably less blocky and more free form. Also Sonic maintains a consistent boost through ring and enemy kills
And on the other side you have the Colors/SLW chuckle heads. 3D sections are shallow straight lines that serve for spectacle and eye candy meant to funnel you from one 2D section to the next rather then anything with any depth or substance to it, said 2D sections are utterly dull and blocky with every level ending up looking and feeling the same as a result. And the ratio is HEAVILY skewed in 2D's favor like 60-80% so. Sonic's boost is nerfed and powered by white wisps presumably to limit its use. Take a guess which one Forces subscribes to!
This isn't even a slam on Colors honestly. I LIKE Colors, it was the game Sonic needed back in 2010 and it's still a decently fun time. But this is 2017, improvements SHOULD have been made. Forces not only goes back to this in terms of level design but does it WORSE in several areas (while also having way more automation then Colors ever did) and you can't even rely on the wisps to shake up the gameplay since their only used by Buddy. So basically you have a stripped down version of Colors as our main gameplay style and it's fucking terrible. This is what we waited 4 years for, it's so sickening to think about honestly. Sonic Team needs a MASSIVE restructuring before even thinking about  making their next disaster.
