  1. Here's a Batman hot take for ya - I think The Dark Knight Returns is a bit overrated, and while I think Year One is a fantastic story, I prefer Zero Year, although ideally I like both of them being in canon.

I've honestly have never been the biggest fan of DKR but I do see why it's so highly regarded. Personally I've just always found the idea of Bruce past his prime to be rather meh all together.

I don't deny the impact DKR has had, it's undeniable that it was highly needed to push us back to darker Batman stories, along with The Killing Joke. And don't get me wrong - in the comics, it had been beginning to veer towards a darker direction already with Death in the Family and what have you, but DKR and Killing Joke was what exploded it back into public light.

But that said, I honestly just kind of get reminded how DKR Batman represents everything I've come to hate about how some writers see Batman. He's an overly-violent, emotional and physical abusive psycho who trains a Bat-Army, and acts very militaristic, and that's been further highlighted by Strikes Again, and especially All-Star Batman & Robin. It isn't the worse in DKR, but with both Strikes Again and All-Star, it paints a very bad picture.

Which is a shame honestly, because Year One handles Batman actually pretty well, especially in regards to his no kill rule.

      Emperor Robrainiac

I read it years back and i really didn't get into it for the reasons you said. Also i wasn't a fan of Frank Miller's messy art style either.

TDKR embodies everything I hate about Batman and I can't really think of any positives

Personally, I believe The Killing Joke is the best defining story of that era.
