  1. Nintendo's giving away a free week's trial of Switch Online via My Nintendo. If you go to their rewards, you can find the trial for 0 platinum coins, and redeem it for a code to get the trial.

  2. We're playing Smash Ultimate and Overwatch Switch (which is currently F2P for all Switch Online members) tomorrow for Game Night! Let me know if you want to play!

Smash is at 4pm EST/9pm BST, and is going on for three hours, and Overwatch starts at 7pm EST/12am BST!

  3. Got the Pachinko Machine shine. Took about 10 tries or so. Annoying as fuck, but not as bad as I was expecting.

  4. Favourite Disney songs?

Personally, my favourites are I Wanna Be Like You, Cruella DeVil, Poor Unfortunate Souls, and Friend Like Me

    1. Teoskaven

      Teoskaven

I normally can't stand Disney songs, but i have some exceptions:
*Friends on the Other Side because Keith David just has the sexiest of voices, the rhythm is catchy and it doesn't go on for an eternity, so it doesn't overstay its welcome
*You're Welcome just because it's The Rock singing, it's entertaining for bizarre it is
*Bahia because the song combined with the visuals are pure aesthetic, especially for the usage of brasilian portuguese for my country's version of The Three Caballeros as the song's language. The movie did the job it was supposed to do and sold me on visiting a location, though so far i haven't be able to (it's a bucket list thing).

I would have included I'm Still Here, but it's a bit cheating so i'll just mention it in this phrase.

      That's easy for me.

It helps that it's full of personality. Even though the knowledge that Robbin Williams is no longer with us saddens me, his antics in this number still make me smile.

    4. Tarnish

      Tarnish

My favorite Disney songs are mostly not the original versions.

Yeah, I'm more of a rocker guy.

    5. Emperor Robrainiac

      Emperor Robrainiac

One of my favorites is definitely "Friend like Me," for sure. It's always been a classic.

Other that come to mind are "Make a Man out of you," from Mulan, "You're Welcome" and Shiny from Moana, "Out there" and "Heaven's Light/Hellfire" From Hunchback, the list goes on and on.

Me being obsessed with old timey cartoons, I have a soft spot for Oogie Boogie's song for basically being a tribute to the bizarre early Betty Boop shorts. I also have some favorites that ended up scrapped such as "Proud of your Boy," Which was meant for Aladdin, and "Snuff out the Light," Originally meant for Kingdom of the Sun (Which of course ended up becoming Emperor's New Groove.)

I could go on and on and on.

    6. JezMM

      JezMM

Most of the songs from Moana to be honest, but Where You Are, How Far I'll Go and I Am Moana in particular.  I listened to the soundtrack to that film on repeat for months after seeing it.

Other than that, while Friend in Me and I Will Go Sailing No More get all the love for being the main theme and more iconic scene respectively, Strange Things is absolutely the best song from Toy Story.

    7. Sean

      Sean

      Jessie's song

    8. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

I always somehow forget Jessie's song, even though any time I hear it, it saddens the hell out of me.

    9. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

I'll throw in Perfect World from Emperor's New Groove as well. It's a super catchy song IMO that establishes Kuzco perfectly.

Also, in terms of the Disney sequels, these are by far my favourites.

Eartha Kitt in general is just gold when it comes to Disney songs.

      And of course, there's this:

I think this is one of the best villain songs in all of Disney, and blows the Prince Ali reprise out of the water.

    11. The Tenth Doctor

      The Tenth Doctor

Big fan of "Be Prepared". Also love "Friend like me", "Prince Ali" and "Wanna be like you".

  5. Yoshi's Fruit Adventure is one of the worst shines so far...

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Oh really? I genuinely really like that one. It's not prefect... For starters,  getting a durian can be a bit of a slog when it seems to take forever to appear and then drops down to the lower level or straight into the water. And then if you make just one mistake you have to restart the entire platforming process that makes up most of the stage afterwards. But it's all pretty easy and fun, I guess? I've never had a problem with it. The platforming is precise but not too difficult. You're given the right colour Yoshi for the job; purple to begin with and then pink (I think?) halfway through the challenge. It's good stuff. Fun idea for a level. Plus you can actually reach the the hoop that Yoshi has to get rid of from a long way away if you're finding it too difficult. Just hit it with some juice, then ditch Yoshi for the rocket or hover nozzle and play the level your own way.

    2. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

My main problem is it feels like Yoshi's controls are inconsistent, at best. Sometimes he has the right height in his flutter jump to get the job done, some times he doesn't. I feel like the game has a small bit of input lag as well at random points (I've noticed it a lot in the platforming sections without FLUDD).

However, I will say that it isn't particularly hard, but it's poorly designed. The big problem is getting the durian. It'd be one thing if it was just having to swim back to shore and hop back onto Yoshi, but instead - you have to get the durian each and every time you fail, which is purely down to RNG, and wastes a lot of time. If it was just get the durian once, and then Yoshi spawns every time after, it wouldn't be half as bad.

    3. Speederino

      Speederino

I didn’t know that spraying the fish with Yoshi vomit turned them into platforms, I’d had zilch reason to do it before that mission. So I was trying all sorts of insane flutter jumps until I gave up and used Google.

    4. DanJ86

      DanJ86

      Key words, "so far..."

    5. JezMM

      JezMM

The platforming part is fine (I feel Sirena Beach teaches you that spraying enemies with juice sometimes turns them into platforms) but yeah it's the tedium of the punishment for failure and the absolute brainless padding that is obtaining the durian which is what makes this episode so hated without a doubt.  Even the fruit dispensery is a bit annoying to get on with how you slide off the pipe in the middle.

    6. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

And then there's the times you do get the durian, only for the physics to cause it to bounce off the platform, meaning you have to jump down, kick it into the water, and do it again.

    7. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Is ground pounding the fruit dispenser really recognised "issue"? It's a bit time consuming, but it's like... Not a problem at all. If I'm going to criticise the level and mission design of Sunshine (and oh boy can I criticise Sunshine), there are so many other things that I would get to below even thinking about Yoshi's Fruit Adventure. It's a touch annoying, but that's it.

    8. JezMM

      JezMM

There's just literally nothing fun or challenging about jumping back and forth between two platforms and ground pounding switches 4-5 times in a row with a chance of spawning bananas that the durian will rebound unpredictably off of, possibly into the water (or worse, the ledge below, so you HAVE to jump down and kick it into the water yourself to get one to spawn again).  It really adds nothing to the episode.  I'd rather the durian had been somewhere hidden in the course (like fruits usually are) and was challenging to get to the port so there'd at least be some platforming involved in the act.

And like, yeah, Sunshine has a bunch of stuff like this so it's relatively inoffensive in the whole scheme of the game, but idk, the fact that the trip to the desert island with Yoshi in Delfino Plaza is worse doesn't do anything to increase my enjoyment of ground-pounding switches 4-5 times in a row lol.

    9. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

It's a design flaw that exists in the mission, and reduces the fun considerably. It's not on the level of some of the more egregious things that Sunshine has in it's mission design, but it's pointless, boring, RNG padding waste of time thrown in for the hell of it, that serves to punish you ridiculously harshly for falling, when it's already punishment enough to have to swim back to shore, and start platforming from the beginning.

    10. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Oh don't get me wrong. My point wasn't "there are worse things therefore this one isn't bad". I loathe that kind of "well it could be worse" mentality. No, my point was just that there are lots of parts of Sunshine that are bad and this just isn't one of them. I really just don't see it. It's got a dumb bit of RNG that's not much of an issue to deal with. Worst case scenario is the durian falling into the water, because if it lands on the lower platform it's super easy to just jump into it in order to kick it up to the upper level. It sounds much harder to do than it actually is.

I dunno... Ground pounding a couple of platforms a dozen times isn't particularly fun. But it's not some egregious sin. It's just kinda janky  and otherwise totally serviceable.

    11. JezMM

      JezMM

Tbh I consider stuff that isn't fun even in theory to be a pretty big sin in Mario games.  Like... hell, the terrible lily pad course and the pachinko machine are both fun in theory, it's just the execution didn't pan out and/or they don't respond to player input quite in the way the player expects them to etc.

The fruit thing though I just don't get why it was put in?  Like, 3D Land/World are games that basically strip out all the fluff to just be pure platforming action, can you imagine how strange it'd be if a level in 3D World started with you pounding two switches back and forth until a door opened after a certain, randomised amount of pounds?  Can you imagine someone pitching that in a level design discussion with colleagues?

It's a tiny part of the game but it is a part that I dread (on any playthrough where I decide to torture myself with the non-mandatory shines anyway) and when I really scrutinise it, it just kinda baffles me that it was put in, or at least that it made it through playtesting.

Having said all of this though, Sunshine becomes easier to tolerate when I think of it as being less a platformer, more a general action game with a platforming focus, kinda like Odyssey.  Not every moment of the game is platforming, sometimes it's just "doing stuff".  And the fruit collection in Ricco Harbour is just one of the less inspired "doing stuff" ideas they came up with.  As the above scrutiny implies, I guess the big fault I'm really criticising here, that spreads it's tendrils of tedium out over the entire Sunshine experience and makes it the worst 3D Mario for me, was that decision to include so much platforming-lite "doing stuff" gameplay in the first place.

    3. Ryannumber1gamer

      Ryannumber1gamer

I mean, that's fair, but on the other hand - in Sunshine, Bowser Jr thinks he's the good guy (Because Bowser told him a lie and claimed Mario was actually kidnapping his mama), so would he just steal it from E Gadd, or trick him into giving it to him?

    7. Plumbers_Helper

      Plumbers_Helper

In the first Luigi's Mansion, Professor E. Gadd watched Mario enter the mansion...and did nothing about it. Didn't attempt stop him, didn't attempt to warn him of the danger, just ignored him and even forgot about seeing him until he met Luigi.

"Now that I get a look at you, I just recalled... A guy with a red hat kind of like yours went up to the mansion without even stopping to chat...and he never returned. Was he a dream, too?"

In Luigi's Mansion 3, E. Gadd is only upset that King Boo escaped because "He's my favorite...", he shows no concern over the danger of him being loose.  He was also more concerned with Luigi capturing all the ghosts then rescuing his friends and family.

"All right! Keep on catching those ghosts. Oh, and be sure to come back to the lab! {..} Hm? What's with that look, Luigi? Am I forgetting something important? Oh. Oh! That's right! I forgot about saving your friends and family. Completely and totally forgot."

I hesitate to say E. Gadd is selfish in anyway, but he feels a bit more morally ambiguous then most Mario characters.
