I would have thought that the amount of completely soulless retro cash grabs last console generation that used 3D models for no other reason than it was cheaper would have killed this notion once and for all.

ThePrinceOfSaiyans reacted to Diogenes in Which 3D Sonic Game was the best Attempt and should be improved upon?
If I had to pick one, it'd probably be SA. It's got mostly sensible controls, able to handle both low and high speeds reasonably well (compared to any non-Adventure 3D Sonic anyway), and it's still got some fragmented pieces of the Genesis games' slope mechanics.
I still think trying to figure out the best existing 3D Sonic formula and improving on it from there is unnecessarily limiting, though. Sonic Team should absolutely try to learn from their previous games, but when they're all so flawed, locking onto one and saying "how can we make this game better?" risks repeating a lot of the same mistakes.

It's definitely Sonic Adventure both in terms of control and stage style. Sonic controls about as fluidly as you would expect after playing the Mega Drive ones and his moves pertaining to the z axis work well including turning radii affected by speed and such. The one area where this falls flat is when slopes and such are involved as much of his heaviness and responsiveness to the environment is gone.
His moves definitely could do with some right tweaking including the spammable spindash and the like but it's by far the best he's ever moved in official 3D.
Stages are okay, they are too linear but not as bad as it would get in the future. They definitely feel more like environments compared to the straighter blocky areas you would get in SA2. Everyone has said it 9 million times but Windy Hill Beta is about as good as it got for official Sonic stages, tonnes of great examples of z axis analogs to Mega Drive stages including running on the walls to get to higher locations.
So yeah if any game was chosen to be built on it would be SA1, preferably with the mindset of Windy Hill Beta stages and proper physics implemented. There is still a long way to go.

What the fuck even is a 6.9 score? It's just as ridiculous as that 7.8 for ORAS. Just say they're a 7 and 8 respectively. I understand scores that end in a point 5 to suggest they're between scores, but these scores are just asinine.

I'd say the better question is what isn't wrong with it. To put it simply, the physics are wonky, the controls are janky, and the level design is bad.

Can confirm that this game is definitely deserving of the 5/10 scores it is getting.

Well, considering he was already working for Eggman as a mercenary he was arguably already "evil", or at least, not a good person. But yes getting dunked on by Shadow is all it took to make him a turbo-edgelord.
