  1. If you want to get better, just write and don't question it, you'll naturally get better with time (I'm sure your familiar with the whole first, second and third draft thing...and that you don't show your first draft to other people)

Otherwise, you might not need to write EVERY idea you have down...some ideas are better saved as just ideas, once you have the whole thing fleshed out in your head and know what you want to write down, then it'll be easier, but if your too spontaneous you might not feel motivated to finish till the end...

(And yes I've taken online book writing courses so I have a bit of an idea of what I'm talking about...)

  2. Normally I'd agree with what most people are saying here and adhere to the "stick to one gameplay" mindset, but I'll have to disagree this once simply because having a random Shump level in the middle of a platformer type of game has been done well and has been well recieved in the past...AKA it makes for a good pace breaker if done right.

...And there lies the problem, I don't think enough attention has been given to SS to make it "done right". Sonic 3 and Mania do technically get it right, but even there it can stand to be made improved. If the core of sonic's appeal is learing to control a loose physics engine, why not contrast that with a stiff, yet well controlled Shump styled gameplay. Make sonic shoot lazers or something, design it like a fast paced Touhou game or something (of course you'd tone it down so that its not overbearingly difficult tho). Any real attempt to fix final SS battles would go a long way to its reputation, there's a lot of untapped potential here!

...Or you know...just not have final SS battles...that works too! :/

  3. I watched the first minute and a half.

Before I commit to watching more or giving half-ass feedback, I have to ask...why weren't the audio/editing issues sorted out before you released the video? (You seem to be pretty well aware of it) I'm not trying to patronize ya or tell you how to run your channel, just genuinely curious + plus I might be able to give advice in that regard as well. (Personally anyways I tend to find real life advice a lot more useable in the long run)

If I commit to watching the rest I'll let you know what I think, best of luck!

  4. I preface this by saying I like Mephilis, but let me ask you this...

Isn't Mephilis obviously more dark than those other villians? Nevermind the fact he looks just like Shadow and could very easily be confused with being a "fan OC villian" of sorts.

If Shadow isn't completely accepted as being a "real sonic character" by a significant chunk of the fanbase...then how on earth could Mephilis be? (Also nevermind he only appeared in a game that a lot of people consider to be horribly writen if not down right insulting)

And for what it's worth, as defensive as the Pro Forces base got, it never was as bad as the condescension to them. Okay?

Where on earth are you getting this metric? I always found it the opposite for me. (Also saying "its shit bro lol" is perfectly fine, not in depth or anything but its a good way to say what you think quickly in 4 words so there's nothing wrong with it.)

Just yesterday someone was attacking me over my thoughts on that screenshot with the five speed boosters in a row.

They said I was probably only getting my opinion from "internet funnymen" like Egoraptor and such. When I responded with" I can form my own opinions, you know" they were all like "No, I don't believe you" and went on a huge rant, making fun of my age and because I sometimes play games like ROBLOX.

This is just one of many examples. I've been called "autistic" and been told to kill myself (Not in a completely serious way, but still) just because I dislike the level design of a video game. These people are insane. I'm sure not all of them are like this, but that's what most of my encounters with them have been like.

I will admit that I have said some pretty immature things about this game, and I do apologize for them. But this is just getting insane. It'll be a long time before the fanbase recovers from this game, if it ever does.

I have nothing against those who simply enjoy this game. You're free to do so. But once you resort to ad hominem and threats, you've lost all my respect.

You probably already know this, but what they are doing is much more immature than what your doing. Your just stating an opinion and they're getting upset AND trying to bring you down for no reason taking it way too personally...that is much easier to do than just say "oh whatever, its just a game bruh"

Another not so good year for Sonic. Who's even surprised. Another year riddled with un-originality from a 2D and 3D Sonic game. I'm going to take a step back from Sonic until I see a game with 100% originality and has a feeling of hard work and care put into it.

Mania and Forces aren't doing anything for me personally.

Might I reccomend Freedom Planet if you want something sonic like that's (almost) 100% original! :P

Everyone has said what has been said. The 3D proof of concept sounds great...

However, I think Shaymay is merely putting off of what could be some more interesting mechanics. If it's one thing he does a lot, is romanticize certain aspects in the design of Sonic that didn't do a whole lot in the long run. The elemental shields, while great, were wasted potential in Sonic 3k. Sure the bubble was good for Hydrocity but what else could it do to compliment Sonic's speed? The electric shield is just a double jump, which is so common in platformers even Sonic now has it so it feels like a complete waste to just give him that(Lost World and Forces now have that as his mainstay). The fire shield is the only thing that actually makes him a little more interesting, however the problem is still prevalent..Air Dash/Dash in general is like implementing boost to Adventure games. It basically nullifies spin dash and doesn't give the player an incentive to use it anymore. Advance 1 is a good example of what happens when you give 2D Sonic Air dash. It was great but a little broken.

I just think in general he needs to throw away the shields in favor of powerups that can be used when having a certain amount of ring power. That way, it not only makes the game feel a little deeper but Rings become far more valuable than before.

Really, I agree with a lot of his stuff(though I'm not fond of the romanticizing of the Genesis games).

Although this sounds great, I believe you can make Sonic deeper mechanically. This just seems a little too basic for Sonic, and I can't imagine Sonic doing interesting things with the levels unless they are gimmick focused or a more "non-linear" level approach.

Honestly, how I view Part 3 is like...take the concept of Breath of the Wild or Mario Odessey and well...apply it to Sonic. That's basically what Shay is asking for here, someting simple but still big expansive and a bit of hidden depth. (kinda like the original games when you think about it)

Now granted given you'd have to make a complex physics system AND make the game fast paced that would be a lot harder to do, but...a man can dream right?

What is the term for the much worse thing we are now in?

Sonic is "Dead" as you might have heard it a thousand times.

Okay so maybe not literately dead, but the closest thing to it.

Megaman was allowed to rest in piece after his games slowly decayed in quality. Sonic is like a zombie that's gotten stale and repetitive and that everyone is tired of! If you think about it that's even worse than being "literately dead".

If you want a more nuanced answer the series is lacking identity, thus simplying labeling as this or that won't ever do it justice, but you can't blame people for oversimplifying a convuluted mess. Maybe if it was good...but its not, at least to most people anyways.

Hey here's an idea maybe wait until we've actually played the Damn game before declaring we're in a "Dark Age".

    You must be new here...

  10. You are not jumping the gun in the slightest.

However...(and this might just be my Classic bias but...) Mania's sheer existence and hopeful continual speaks volumes of how on track Sonic is now despite the BS. Compared the Gens its not just "back to being good again" but "better than we ever were before", for a franchise that's 25+ years old that's HUGE!

I don't think the Rush games (or advance) really were to that level back then. Sure they were "good games" but they weren't games you'd recommend to people who weren't big on handhelds, heck you could argue half their appeal was that they were handheld games. Mania is a different beast tho, like many others have said, its just pure joy that we haven't seen in this franchise in years!

With all that being said tho, maybe its time we retire this "dark age" mindset. A dark age implies that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, that things have a chance at getting better. This...of course makes Mania's existence all the more redundant. What exactly does anyone want from this franchise anymore? Mania to me (and others) is that. Heck we got fangames and Freedom Planet on top of that, I'm plenty satisfied as is. Its come to the point that the fanbase has eclipsed the company. Sure Forces might have a dark fan-ficy story, but I could just go watch whatever animation shadow759 is making if I wanted that kind of story telling. We've reached a point where Forces isn't offering anything new or of substance AND is showing no signs of unstaling, no signs of improving later, for all we know it could (and might as well at this point) get worse!

Sonic isn't going to die, but he will become irrelevant...oh what am I saying. We passed that crossroad a LONG time ago! Whatever Gens salvaged, Forces took a dump in. The sole fact that Mania (which can be confused as a fangame if one is not careful) outshines the supposed "official" new sonic release is irony at its finest! New Sonic just isn't relevant to anyone anymore and that's a fact...

So do we have a new dark age then? Again that implies that there is hope to be seen, whatever this fanbase wants out of 3D sonic has already looked elsewhere, Utopia and GHP Act 2 is further indication that innovation in this franchise won't happen under ST's current staff. If that's your shether of hope then so be it, dark age it is...

...but if you don't even have that then...well...I'm afraid we reached something much worse.

    Looks at Mania

    ...I'm sorry what now?! :P

Time Limits have never been fun in anything ever. I'm pretty sure most will agree with that.

Where on earth did you get this rediculously strange claim?

8 hours ago, Limit Breaker Diamond said:

These "I want Forces to fail" comments are becoming really anmoying.

If you want Forces to fail, very well, but you know it won't. If you check any place rather than SSMB, you will know tons of people like the game.

And I'm pretty sure that if Forces was to fail, SEGA would either take a major change in how Sonic plays (unknows if for the better or the worst) or just erase Modern completely and stick to 2D.

You say all that like its a bad thing...

  12. If you haven't played Freedom Planet yet, its exactly what your describing here. Its basically Sonic with an attack button (among other things) and a steeper learning curve. I'd even go as far as to say I like it better than Sonic.

I would be genuinely curious to know what you think of that game since it falls under your discription very well.

As opposed to what I thought before that game came out (2014) its something I wanted to see in sonic for a long time, as I like sonic for his speed but wanted a game that was more demanding in difficulty, ala IWBTG fangames. (The hack Sonic Boom is another great example of this, giving sonic a dive and jumping kick alongside more difficult but fair bosses.)

To put it another way, Sonic's strength is speed, IWBTG is difficulty, and FP is a bit of both with the added complexity of games like Yoshi's Island and N game. That's admitably a VERY simplistic way to explain it, but alas that's how I see it in a nutshell.

You are one of the very few rare people to not get upset over hard bosses. Metal Sonic boss in Sonic Mania was annoyingly hard. Yes if it is a fair boss than yes it could be I guess rewarding, though it requires you to have the patience to redo the same thing 100 times.

Oil Ocean boss, both of them were okay for me. Just jump immediately in the middle for act 2 boss to get lots of hits.

I hate to add more salt to the wound, but I didn't die to a Sonic Mania boss a single time my first playthrough...you could see why I like fighting hard bosses with that in mind. Granted you could argue making the bosses harder ruins the flow or some BS like that, but that's neither here nor there.

I like my bosses to be fun, but sometimes (mostly for me) hard can be fun ya know? :P

I prefer easy bosses in the beginning and slightly harder in the end. But yeah I definitely do not want hard bosses. Why would you want a difficult boss that will make you get very upset when your can have fun interesting boss that is beatable?

    1. Hard bosses don't get me upset

    2. The reward for beating a hard boss is immense satisfaction that you simply don't get by beating an easy boss

    3. Saying a hard boss is "unbeatable" is a lack of confidence lol

    4. Challenge and fun are not mutually exclusive, in fact, I argue if done correctly...difficulty can enhance one's enjoyment of a boss sustantually! :o

Oil Ocean Zone's boss is an absolute nightmare, an hour and a half i sat there the first time through trying to beat it.

I've heard people say this boss is hard (for some unknown reason) but this is the first time I've heard someone say it took them this long...like wow...call me surprised! :o

I will not buy it, definitely not. You see, this game has everything I hate about Sonic, Classic Sonic's presence, the Wisps, the Boost gameplay, 2D gameplay, the NPCs who talk to you, playable Character Creator, playable Shadow, Green Hill and Chemical Plant, Dr. Eggman, rings, springs, robots, boost pads, palmtrees, the list goes on and on. Basically every major Sonic thing I hate, who would ever buy this shit? Why am I wasting time on this forum?

This is some weird ass humor I'll give you that...

  16. 5 options for me...

    1. I for whatever reason impulse buy at launch, assuming I get a sustainable ammount of money first (very unlikely)

    2. I end up buying it shortly after release if its better than expected or I get Hype enough after watching people I follow online play it on twitch or tweet interesting things about it on twitter

    3. I wait for a price drop like a normal person, most likely will happen in a month or so if I'm lucky/keep an eye out.

    4. I pirate it...not an issue for me but the incintive needs to be there for me to bother

    5. The game manages to disintrest me so much if I choose to spoil the story for myself (might happen who knows) that I don't even bother playing the game at all. (nevermind Mania exists lol)

While I admit this scale is more on the positive spectrum, I don't see too many other people feeling differently...unless they absolutely hate what's been shown so far or on the flip side adore it...but whatever, I think these reasons are justified enough! :P

If I could ask, I'd prefer Treasure-style bosses. Dynamite Headdy would be a perfect reference. Maybe not that insane amount, but imagine Sonic fighting the Twin Freaks <3

That might make another topic :) I mean, it's already a long task going through all bosses, rating them and commenting something.

Might just be me, but I find it easier to comment on something when I give that thing context, in this case the context being a comparison to every other boss. There is no comparison here, thus no context, saying a boss is "well designed" or "cheap" can mean anything and yet nothing at the same time!

Then again if I were less lazy I would do that myself...well its more of a lack of interest than anything, the game is too new also so my thoughts on each "boss" isn't exactly solidified either!

To the OP: What is with you and wanting HARD BOSSES?!?!?! That is so weird to me! Like you gave them a worse rating because it was not hard enough and caused you to rage? Rant over.

      Reveal hidden contents

Green Hill 1: Spinning Spike Balls of Doom! 9/10 Nice, easy, first boss. Also love the mini boss music.

Green Hill 2: Final Boss as First Level boss. 8/10 Little tricky at first. You can use Tails and not even hit the boss and just land on top of the capsule.

Chemical Plant 1: 5/10 Boring. Bland. But at least it's easy.

Chemical Plant 2: 10/10 Epic boss. Whoever did this. One word. Genius.

Studiopolis 1: 6/10 I could not figure this out. But it is okay boss. Jumping is tricky.

Studiopolis 2: 8/10 Very good boss. I can not believe I am saying this. But too easy. Not enough weather forecasts. Also no snow?

Flying Battery 1: 6/10 Bland. At least it's easy.

Flying Battery 2: 6/10 Annoying. Though creative.

Press Garden 1: 8/10 Simple mini boss to beat.

Press Garden 2: 6/10 Kind of annoying.

Stardust Speedway 1: 8/10 Nice boss and it easy.

Stardust Speedway 2: 5/10 Very long and generally hard boss especially since time over could happen often.

    Hydrocity 1: 10/10 Nice twist.

Hydrocity 2: 7/10 The second boss is the same thing from before.

Mirage Saloon 1: 7/10 ST, 7/10 K Nothing to say here much.

Mirage Saloon 2: 8/10 Team Hooligan was nice touch.

Oil Ocean 1: 8/10 Another easy boss to beat.

Oil Ocean 2: 7/10 Tricky but easy.

Lava Reef 1: 7/10 Not sure I am even hitting him.

Lava Reef 2: 6/10 Very tricky to hit the boss. Though it amusing seeing him riding the enraged Motobug like a motorcycle around.

Lava Reef K: 7/10 Not sure. I kind of took him out really fast and was scared it would be hard boss than.

Metallic Madness 1: 8/10 Nice twist on Sonic 1 final boss there.

Metallic Madness 2: 10/10 Definitely one of my favorite bosses in the game.

Titanic Monarch 1: 8/10 It is alright.

Titanic Monarch 2: 9/10 For the final boss I was very pleased that this was not too hard. It was hard but the right amount of hard for final boss level that is.

Eggman Reverie: 9/10 I get to fly that is all I got to say!

Are you saying you don't like hard bosses? Like you want bosses to be piss easy all the time?

What kind of taste is this? lol I'm legit curious to see your responce...

Also I'm kinda surprised noone bothered to actually RANK the bosses from least to most favorite! :/

One thing to keep in mind is that the locations from past games are being presented as if they're in the present, if Green Hill is anything to go by. They weren't warped from back in time, they're in their current state. That would rule out White Jungle and any other place that "BLOWS UP?!?!"

Is eggman making multiple infinite's? Or are those just parts of him.

I'd like to think those are failed experiments, or they are like shadow clones that you never see again until later...it could be a plot point near the end if infinite desides to let out all teh other incomplete "whatevertheheck" infinite is supposed to be.
