While Sonic Team tend to cling to anything that's positively received with Sonic like their life depends on it, it really is baffling trying to figure out why the zeti have been brought back so many times. When Lost World was a kind of a flop, and they aren't particularly well liked characters either.

    I wonder what ST sees in them.

      Well it's probably a number of things:

      Them being pretty much blank slates that can fit into any antagonist role without hassle.

      Them not really having garnered any massive hatred or ridicule like, say, Mephiles or Infinite.

      ST having only really created two choices in the matter over the last decade so there really isn't another option a lot of the time.

      ect.

      I feel like Lost World flopping has more to do with its original platform more than its content. Sure, Sonic fans didn't care about the game and tend to not like the Deadly Six, but even then it looks more like a vocal minority or just small pockets of fans. I'd argue the comics did way more for the characters than anything Sega and Sonic Team produced themselves. They're not amazing there, no, they're just nowhere near as embarrassing as they are in their own game. If Infinite showed up in IDW, I think general opinion would turn around on him if Ian or Evan got the opportunity to write good stories for him.

      And, honestly, the villain roster has desperately needed some filling out with some kind of other mainstays especially because most of the other ones either die or turn good, so I could see the D6 just being the most convenient characters to use.

      sonic has a serious dearth of recurring villains. they all either die, convert to good (or at least to mutually respectful rivals), or are connected to eggman. remember how forces' big scary rogues gallery amounted to a new villain, metal sonic, two characters who hadn't been bad guys in ages, and zavok.

      they spent time creating villains they could actually reuse and they seem intent on getting their effort's worth out of them regardless of their lack of popularity.

      I think that it's pretty safe to say that as far as the games are concerned, the Zeti are remarkably unpopular. They were uninteresting and underdeveloped in Lost World, to the point that most of weren't even named in-game. Their designs were contentious from the outset, and unfortunately their designs convey everything about them: fat, crazy, old, emo and girl. The only exception to that is Zavok, who's much more cunning and calm than his Bowser-esque appearance would suggest. All this paired with the fact that they debuted in Lost World, a rather disliked game in its own right that I think may be the worst selling mainline Sonic game to date.

      The series lacks recurring villains and lacks variety in the ones that it does. The Zeti were a failed attempt to rectify that. I really wanted to like them, but that never came to pass. Lost World was a crappy introduction for them all. Forces was a crappy showcase of every character involved, and the Zavok clone did nothing. And TSR was just so... Ugh. Zavok, separate from the rest of his team, was working with Eggman? How and why?

      I've never been given a reason to like them. I think a lot of people similarly find them to be unenjoyable.

  2. I wonder if the Colors remaster will be as lazy as the Galaxy port in SM3DAS or even the SADX port when it came to consoles and steam, or if some genuine effort is going into it.

    Historically I think Sonic doesn't get great ports, the best one was probably SA2B for the extra 2 player content and even that is pretty minimal.

    Thinking about it, is there even a difference between an enhanced port and a remaster? I feel like remaster is just a buzzword that just means port, but sounds fancier.

      Forgot about the Sonic 1 and 2 remasters on mobile, those are the best ones but still. Not Sonic Team.

      At the very least, it's not a straight up 1:1 port in the audio department. It's got a German dub this time (likely more too). Absolutely no idea what that says for everything else, but I wouldn't have expected SEGA to go back and re-dub any games before this.

      This is the first time a 3D Sonic game since SADX has been re-released

      It was a pretty much just a straight port of the GCN version. SADX got basically the same treatment too. Download only, nothing new, the game had been ported in the past. Colours is the first game since the Adventures to get remastered. Enabling widescreen and higher resolutions on a 3D game is basically nothing.

      is there anything that could be gained / improved with colors beyond obligatary technical QoL improvements (improving framerate/resolution, maybe adding HE lighting)?

      with stuff like unleashed and generations there are some things that could be changed around to be improve those games, like the werehog/medal system for the former, classic sonic's physics for the latter, and improved performance for both games. even taxman's remakes/remasters of the genesis games (and to a much lesser extent, M2's ports), those games were retroactive remasters, bringing the older games up to date with features added in later sequels (and regarding sonic 2, restoring cut content).

      colors honestly feels robust enough to not really need any major improvements or additions. which i imagine is probably a big reason why sega decided to remaster this game, but not the others.

      I don't think you could change much about Colours that wouldn't be highly subjective no.  I mean, I would change a LOT but we're talking re-doing whole levels because I just don't care for their level design philosophy on this one.

      I guess my ideal scenario would be rebranding all the mini gimmicky acts as bonus optional ones and replacing them in the mandatory story progression with new, original, full-length 3D focused stages to balance out all the 2D.  But that's a tall order for a remaster and who even knows if the movement mechanics are even really built for challenging 3D gameplay when put to the test.

      Let's hope then that Sonic Colors Ultimate won't be like SADX which fucked up a lot of things in the process... Or else folks will have to start making a "Better Colors" mod

      Honestly, I'm just wondering if they'll be able to do anything with this that hasn't already been done with it through Dolphin from a QoL and content standpoint.

      But that's literally just the game industry at a whole. They show you a name and a pretty trailer and expect you to shill for it ahead of it. Sega is just doing its thing to contribute to the trend.

  4. Top tier character. Great design, and has a cool set of abilities. On top of that she plays similarly to sonic while also having her own tweaks which is the ideal way to handle different playable characters in my opinion. She isn't as fast as sonic (as it should be, blaze is pretty much the only time the series has handled a character being slower than sonic and yet still making her more than fast enough to be a lot of fun to play), however to circumvent her lower speed she gets so much more air when tricking, she's got a hover instead of a homing attack (in the rush series anyway), she's got fire resistance, and she can hold her breath for longer underwater. I would really love to see other characters handled like that should they ever be playable again. I've always had the idea that shadow should have less traction and lower acceleration than sonic due to his skates, but have a longer range homing attack, and a higher top speed when going downhill making him ideal for speedruns only he's more difficult to handle. Essentially a character for more experienced players. I always felt like that made sense for shadow. Blaze is a character done right.

  6. I can't speak to what I predict is coming next, but what I can say is that out of all the possibilities what I honestly want most is a sonic adventure remake. It isn't likely I'm going to get what I want and what I prefer out of this series much going forward, especially considering I haven't gotten that anyway in well well over a decade. Sonic adventure is probably my favorite segment of this franchise (along with sonic heroes, but I know with certainty my preference for that game won't ever be satiated by any official outlet any time soon) and I already routinely replay sa1, so getting that remake would hold me over for years. At least assuming it's true to the original and doesn't do stupid shit like changing the dialogue to make it more in line with sonic post colors, or change sonic's gameplay or whatever. Honestly super excited at the idea of an sa1 remake.
  7. This is the correct answer. I also dislike tails in the classics so I'm surprised so many brought him up in this thread, still I wouldn't consider him useless. Flight makes for easy exploration whether it's at a snail's pace or not and he makes for a decent babby mode. Crazy how they got the flight correctly immediately with cream. She flies faster than tails, but gets tired quicker plus she can cancel her flight to bunny hop on enemies below her. Especially with cheese, cream has babby mode perfected. Maria has a slap attack she can hurt enemies with. She has a very low jump height though.

  10. Decided to mess around in sm64 and I just found out you could kill the snowball throwing snowmen by running circles around them just like the Eyes...

  11. It's literally been like this since Sonic Adventure. It doesn't matter what part of the series you're into. This has always been something sections of this fandom has had to deal with. Like what you like, but it's frustrating because a lot of people want this series to change big time. The clown sonic has become since colors is definitely not what most people envision when they think "sonic". It's certainly not the sonic that made me into such a huge fan in the first place. That's not even talking about gameplay. Colors turned sonic into a rigid, blocky platforming mess that it's maintained for what 10 years now? Generations was a step in the right direction in that regard, only for lost world to come immediately after and flop on all fronts. And then they release forces trying to hit the same notes generations did, probably the safest and most surefire bet at pleasing the most people and they end up failing at even that, missing the mark completely and somehow making everything that made generations alright, worse. The problem is when the games are not up to par but people lap that shit up anyways, it doesn't propagate change. It just gets worse and worse until you get people leaving the fandom entirely. It's how you get shit like sword and shield somehow becoming the best selling pokemon games despite them being the most barebones and mediocre shit gamefreak could've possibly put out. Many nintendo franchises have had complaints of becoming stale, probably peaking during the Wii u era, but they at least have the talent to challenge those complaints and make games with tons of heart like mario odyssey and breath of the wild. Sonic has nothing like that. You could argue that's what sonic mania is. But I think it's telling when the best game a series has is pretending to be 25 years old, and isn't even made by sonic team. Because when sonic team gives it a go you get shit like forces classic sonic. It's such a low bar they have to hit. Just let sonic roll down hills, have tails or knuckles be playable, don't limit the games to narrow corridors and clumsy blocky 2d segments, and have a tone similar to that of SatBK or SA or Unleashed. I really think if they could check those boxes most people would be happy. But they can't even hit the lowest of the low bars. Like others before have said, I think this franchise is garbage. And I don't want it to be. At least now there seems to be some sort of change happening behind the scenes. How this will affect the games going forward we have no idea, but I can only hope sega or sonic team or whoever has become aware of the state of the series and how badly it needs to change. Hopefully for the better.
  12. I used to vehemently hate the idea of 2 world's, but I think I could accept it so long as they explain warp rings are scattered throughout Sonic's world and some can take you to other worlds. I haven't seen the movie but I think it does something like this. If there was anything I'd want taken from the movie it'd be that and nothing else.

    I'd also like it if that meant they had easier access to Blaze's dimension.

  13. What was the last sonic team made game you enjoyed? 

    I think mine was generations, but looking back I don't think I feel too fondly about it anymore. In hindsight I think the last one I really hold dear is unleashed.

      I've "enjoyed" aspects of them all but... I guess the last big, heartfelt experience I had was Unleashed. The last overall funtime I had was Generations. 

      I'd have said the Sumo Digital racing games but those aren't Sonic Team.

      I guess I enjoyed Forces the first time through, but the overall life of the game beyond that first playthrough when I realised how little there was to it all... hard to say "enjoyed" there.  Lost World is a similar experience even though it's a more respectable game - still found the overall experience sub-par.

      So with that in mind, Sonic 4 Episode 2, I guess!  I like it, I replay it as often as most other Sonic games that I go back to regularly.

      I forgot about Sonic 4 episode 2, I did actually enjoy that game too. But it was largely unimpressionable and I even forgot about it. But I did like it for what it was.

      I actually enjoyed Forces and Team Sonic Racing. Do I recognize that they could've been better? Absolutely,  but I still do find legit fun value in them.

      Generations. In spite of it still being off the mar, I still really enjoyed what they did with Genesis Sonic gameplay in regards to the level design and dynamic presentation; and while I still don't think it makes for good 3D platforming, I can still derive fun from Millennium Sonic's Boost gameplay for the stealth racing game it is.

      Ignoring that...the original Riders. I'm not lying when I say I honestly like it more than practically every post-Genesis Sonic game. Sunk so many hours into 100% completion and I still kept coming back to it until I moved on to the newer consoles. As of this writing I really want to dig out my GC (or Wii) and replay it.

      Generations. Lost World was an "almost" kinda game-- there was a lot of moments I almost enjoyed, but just about everything came with a frustrating caveat of sorts.

  14. Griffith voiced both Sonic and Shadow during a time in the series when Shadow was a major player. Silver is significantly more minor than Shadow, he could still voice Sonic.
  15. Can only hope a change in VA is a sign of  the beginning of a massive change of direction for the main games.

      The series needs big change, but VAs needn't be a part of that at all. I'm hesitant to think that simply replacing the lead VA of ten years is a sign of big change.

      To be fair, Roger came with a massive shake up of the series, as well as Griffith. So it's understandable to associated VA changes with retools.
