  1. EXTREMELY excited at the prospect of an open world Sonic game.

Fuck I've wanted that forever, can't wait to see actual gameplay of this thing just to know it's true or not.

  2. Where is this event happening? YouTube Twitter twitch etc. ?

  3. While Sonic Team tend to cling to anything that's positively received with Sonic like their life depends on it, it really is baffling trying to figure out why the zeti have been brought back so many times. When Lost World was a kind of a flop, and they aren't particularly well liked characters either.

I wonder what ST sees in them.

    1. Strickerx5

Well it's probably a number of things:

Them being pretty much blank slates that can fit into any antagonist role without hassle.

Them not really having garnered any massive hatred or ridicule like, say, Mephiles or Infinite.

ST having only really created two choices in the matter over the last decade so there really isn't another option a lot of the time.

    2. Dejimon11

@Strickerx5 Infinite is hated? All i see is for people to bring him back because he had "potential".

    3. Zaysho

I feel like Lost World flopping has more to do with its original platform more than its content. Sure, Sonic fans didn't care about the game and tend to not like the Deadly Six, but even then it looks more like a vocal minority or just small pockets of fans. I'd argue the comics did way more for the characters than anything Sega and Sonic Team produced themselves. They're not amazing there, no, they're just nowhere near as embarrassing as they are in their own game. If Infinite showed up in IDW, I think general opinion would turn around on him if Ian or Evan got the opportunity to write good stories for him.

And, honestly, the villain roster has desperately needed some filling out with some kind of other mainstays especially because most of the other ones either die or turn good, so I could see the D6 just being the most convenient characters to use.

    4. Strickerx5

@Dejimon11Well he does, and most fans will say that. Though let's be real here, from a general public perspective, he's a bit of a meme.

    5. Dejimon11

Every character has potential. It’s just amazing how he’s the one character that people want for that reason besides Mephiles.

      ...although the parallels interesting

tfw they'll keep recycling zeti's no one likes rather than bring back the babylon rogues, hooligan's, and heck even metal knuckles and tails doll

    7. Ferno

      "Deadly Six/ Zeti"

      You mean just Zavok.

    8. Diogenes

sonic has a serious dearth of recurring villains. they all either die, convert to good (or at least to mutually respectful rivals), or are connected to eggman. remember how forces' big scary rogues gallery amounted to a new villain, metal sonic, two characters who hadn't been bad guys in ages, and zavok.

they spent time creating villains they could actually reuse and they seem intent on getting their effort's worth out of them regardless of their lack of popularity.

    9. Dejimon11

      I like the Zeti.

    10. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

I think that it's pretty safe to say that as far as the games are concerned, the Zeti are remarkably unpopular. They were uninteresting and underdeveloped in Lost World, to the point that most of weren't even named in-game. Their designs were contentious from the outset, and unfortunately their designs convey everything about them: fat, crazy, old, emo and girl. The only exception to that is Zavok, who's much more cunning and calm than his Bowser-esque appearance would suggest. All this paired with the fact that they debuted in Lost World, a rather disliked game in its own right that I think may be the worst selling mainline Sonic game to date.

The series lacks recurring villains and lacks variety in the ones that it does. The Zeti were a failed attempt to rectify that. I really wanted to like them, but that never came to pass. Lost World was a crappy introduction for them all. Forces was a crappy showcase of every character involved, and the Zavok clone did nothing. And TSR was just so... Ugh. Zavok, separate from the rest of his team, was working with Eggman? How and why?

I've never been given a reason to like them. I think a lot of people similarly find them to be unenjoyable.

  4. I wonder if the Colors remaster will be as lazy as the Galaxy port in SM3DAS or even the SADX port when it came to consoles and steam, or if some genuine effort is going into it.

Historically I think Sonic doesn't get great ports, the best one was probably SA2B for the extra 2 player content and even that is pretty minimal.

Thinking about it, is there even a difference between an enhanced port and a remaster? I feel like remaster is just a buzzword that just means port, but sounds fancier.

    1. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

Forgot about the Sonic 1 and 2 remasters on mobile, those are the best ones but still. Not Sonic Team.

    2. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

At the very least, it's not a straight up 1:1 port in the audio department. It's got a German dub this time (likely more too). Absolutely no idea what that says for everything else, but I wouldn't have expected SEGA to go back and re-dub any games before this.

This is the first time a 3D Sonic game since SADX has been re-released

    3. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

The fair pricing alone still run circles over each and every price from Nintendont's own ports, so I wouldn't be bothered

    4. Jango

      Didn't SA2 got a widescreen remaster in 2012?

    5. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

It was a pretty much just a straight port of the GCN version. SADX got basically the same treatment too. Download only, nothing new, the game had been ported in the past. Colours is the first game since the Adventures to get remastered. Enabling widescreen and higher resolutions on a 3D game is basically nothing.

    6. Milo

is there anything that could be gained / improved with colors beyond obligatary technical QoL improvements (improving framerate/resolution, maybe adding HE lighting)?

with stuff like unleashed and generations there are some things that could be changed around to be improve those games, like the werehog/medal system for the former, classic sonic's physics for the latter, and improved performance for both games. even taxman's remakes/remasters of the genesis games (and to a much lesser extent, M2's ports), those games were retroactive remasters, bringing the older games up to date with features added in later sequels (and regarding sonic 2, restoring cut content).

colors honestly feels robust enough to not really need any major improvements or additions. which i imagine is probably a big reason why sega decided to remaster this game, but not the others.

    7. Dejimon11

@Supah Berry Captain Toad was $40 when it came out on switch. Try again.

    8. JezMM

I don't think you could change much about Colours that wouldn't be highly subjective no.  I mean, I would change a LOT but we're talking re-doing whole levels because I just don't care for their level design philosophy on this one.

I guess my ideal scenario would be rebranding all the mini gimmicky acts as bonus optional ones and replacing them in the mandatory story progression with new, original, full-length 3D focused stages to balance out all the 2D.  But that's a tall order for a remaster and who even knows if the movement mechanics are even really built for challenging 3D gameplay when put to the test.

    9. Jango

Let's hope then that Sonic Colors Ultimate won't be like SADX which fucked up a lot of things in the process... Or else folks will have to start making a "Better Colors" mod

    10. Strickerx5

@Dejimon11Tbf, one or two examples isn't exactly great either.

Honestly, I'm just wondering if they'll be able to do anything with this that hasn't already been done with it through Dolphin from a QoL and content standpoint.

  5. Dreading the inevitable reveal of the next sonic game that shows zero gameplay footage after all this time and gives no detail into how the game could possibly play.

Worst case we get sonic doing a slide in the cg trailer and there'll be more boost gameplay paranoia.

    1. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

Relax pal. Everyone knows SEGA's too smart to make cheap cop outs like that.

Which is why all they'll publicize is another silhouette teased photo

    3. Diogenes

is it still paranoia if it's true

    4. StaticMania

Sonic should always have a slide...

    6. Crow the BOOLET

      Crow the BOOLET

But that's literally just the game industry at a whole. They show you a name and a pretty trailer and expect you to shill for it ahead of it. Sega is just doing its thing to contribute to the trend.

  6. Is it me or is the transition sound used in the nintendo direct a sonic sound effect?

  7. Was there ever any solid evidence that 06 was intended to be a reboot other than the fact the game is called 'sonic the hedgehog'?

    1. azoo

was more of a marketing-related reboot than anything

  8. Decided to mess around in sm64 and I just found out you could kill the snowball throwing snowmen by running circles around them just like the Eyes...

How am I just finding this out after over 20 years...

  9. I used to vehemently hate the idea of 2 world's, but I think I could accept it so long as they explain warp rings are scattered throughout Sonic's world and some can take you to other worlds. I haven't seen the movie but I think it does something like this. If there was anything I'd want taken from the movie it'd be that and nothing else.

I'd also like it if that meant they had easier access to Blaze's dimension.

    1. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

      And maybe even the future!

  10. What was the last sonic team made game you enjoyed?

I think mine was generations, but looking back I don't think I feel too fondly about it anymore. In hindsight I think the last one I really hold dear is unleashed.

    Like 13 years omfl...

    1. Dr. Detective Mike

      Dr. Detective Mike

I've "enjoyed" aspects of them all but... I guess the last big, heartfelt experience I had was Unleashed. The last overall funtime I had was Generations.

I'd have said the Sumo Digital racing games but those aren't Sonic Team.

    2. Winston

I liked Puyo Puyo Tetris a lot, haven't played the second one yet though. Sonic game wise, Generations.

    3. McGroose

I can't believe it's been nearly a decade since that came out

    4. JezMM

I guess I enjoyed Forces the first time through, but the overall life of the game beyond that first playthrough when I realised how little there was to it all... hard to say "enjoyed" there.  Lost World is a similar experience even though it's a more respectable game - still found the overall experience sub-par.

So with that in mind, Sonic 4 Episode 2, I guess!  I like it, I replay it as often as most other Sonic games that I go back to regularly.

    5. Marcello

Honestly, I did enjoy Forces. It's not great and definitely not what I want from the series but I enjoyed my time well enough 🤷‍♂️

    6. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

I forgot about Sonic 4 episode 2, I did actually enjoy that game too. But it was largely unimpressionable and I even forgot about it. But I did like it for what it was.

    7. Jovahexeon Jax Joranvexeon

      Jovahexeon Jax Joranvexeon

I actually enjoyed Forces and Team Sonic Racing. Do I recognize that they could've been better? Absolutely,  but I still do find legit fun value in them.

    8. JezMM

Oh yeah to be fair, TSR was great.  Utterly unremarkable and destined from the start to be a footnote in the franchise's history, but a solid as heck game.

    9. Adamabba

Last one I liked was Sonic 4 Episode 2. Like TSR, pretty solid but nothing special

    10. TheOcelot

Last ST game I really enloyed was Colours.

    11. JezMM

Oh wait, I remember now while I initially ruled out TSR - that was still Sumo wasn't it?  So I don't suppose that one counts.

    12. Milo

Generations. In spite of it still being off the mar, I still really enjoyed what they did with Genesis Sonic gameplay in regards to the level design and dynamic presentation; and while I still don't think it makes for good 3D platforming, I can still derive fun from Millennium Sonic's Boost gameplay for the stealth racing game it is.

Ignoring that...the original Riders. I'm not lying when I say I honestly like it more than practically every post-Genesis Sonic game. Sunk so many hours into 100% completion and I still kept coming back to it until I moved on to the newer consoles. As of this writing I really want to dig out my GC (or Wii) and replay it.

    13. Dejimon11

      Lost World

    14. azoo

Generations. Lost World was an "almost" kinda game-- there was a lot of moments I almost enjoyed, but just about everything came with a frustrating caveat of sorts.

    15. Jango

By release order, Gens, for sure. I played the shit out of that game. By actual last played, Unleashed HD.

    16. Dejimon11

      Lost World

    17. Polkadi~☆

Puyo Puyo Tetris is pretty fun.

  11. Can only hope a change in VA is a sign of  the beginning of a massive change of direction for the main games.

    1. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

The series needs big change, but VAs needn't be a part of that at all. I'm hesitant to think that simply replacing the lead VA of ten years is a sign of big change.

    2. Kuzu

To be fair, Roger came with a massive shake up of the series, as well as Griffith. So it's understandable to associated VA changes with retools.

  12. If Metal Sonic were to be playable in Sonic Mania, how would you have him play while adhering to the one button simplicity the rest of the classics follow?

    1. NegaMix

Personally, I'd probably just give him a mid-air dash attack similar to the one that Hyper Sonic had in S3K. Maybe also make him immune to drowning?

      That's about it.

    2. Solister

It's been a while since I played, but I guess like Metal Sonic in Sonic 1 and Metal Sonic Hyperdrive?

This actually remind me I should try to get involved more in Sonic Hacks.

    3. TheOcelot

Allow Metal to move freely through the air like Super Sonic in Egg Reverie. Allow him to do a charge up spin attack and air-dash like he can against Sonic on the Stardust Speedway boss-fight.

    4. Diogenes

lazy answer is to just make him a sonic clone

better answer, just off the cuff...maybe something like hyper sonic's air dash, minus the screen clear, but with a bit of charge time. so you press and hold jump in midair, he hovers for a moment (maybe using his "electrified" animation), then you release jump and he dashes in the direction you're holding (either in ball form or that energized super-dash, depending on whether they want him uncurled or not after the dash).

    5. Wraith

somebody is getting an eight way air dash if it kills me.

    6. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

I was thinking perhaps instead of a spin dash he'd have his overdrive move. So he'd stay in place while electrified, then letting go of the button he blasts forward like he always does and doing so he can destroy walls and spikes and such.

For an aerial attack I really have no idea. I do kinda like the idea of him having hyper sonic's dash. Plenty of good ideas and I find keeping it so it works with one button is a challenge.

  13. I think I'd honestly be ok if after smash ultimate we got a soft reboot where the roster is way small but their movesets are much more true to their actual series.

I love smash bros and have ever since the n64 days but a big issue I've had lately is I don't love how 98% of the casts movesets are.

Crazy how with a roster so huge there are a ton of times where I really want to play the game but I don't actually want to play as anyone.

DLC characters though have been amazingly true to their games and you could see the heart that was poured into making them feel like they were ripped right out of their games and pasted into smash bros. Really makes me wish a few of my favorites like wario, ganondorf, ness, lucas, young link and even sonic could've been given some love like that. I realize why characters like ganondorf, y link and sonic are the way they are, but an au where they feel like dlc characters and not a rush job is one i wanna live in.

    1. StaticMania

Sonic...wasn't a rush job, the game was delayed for a while due to him.

The characters having series accurate moves isn't likely due to balancing or it just being awkward to make work.

DLC doesn't worry about that and how positive or negatively that affects the character shows immediately.

    2. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

I've got an even spicier take for you: Why does Nintendo's big crossover brand even need to be just a fighting series?

    3. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

I'm pretty certain Sonic was absolutely rushed. Even if the game was delayed, he definitely wasn't made with the same energy someone like Joker, Ryu, Banjo or Bayonetta was. All of his moves looked the and sounded the same, and his normals and aerials were uninspired. Smash 4 slightly altered his animations to look less awkward but it still doesn't feel how Sonic should imho. Look at PM Sonic for an example of how with a few simple move changes, he could feel SO much better.

Also, I'm pretty sure smash kart is something everyone wants.

    4. StaticMania

His animations are more stiff in Smash 4 onward...

Most of his moves being rolls, could be due to lack of creativity...not rushing though.

He's the most expressive character in Brawl, but the least creative.

    5. Supah Berry

      Supah Berry

      @Strong Guy

Racing and other competitive games are fine, but why stop there? We can have ourselves a big Nintendo and guests crossover platforming adventure. Nintendo sees Smash as a celebration of all game series, so why not have them do what they all do best: go on adventures?

    6. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

His up aerial is an example of a move made to look much cleaner and easier to read in smash 4. Regardless, Sonic is brawl felt sloppy and they kept him largely the same just because. Iirc Sakurai has stated he keeps characters mostly the same because people who liked their old playstyle would miss them.

I'm just saying Sonic in smash bros doesn't feel like Sonic at all. Again, look at PM Sonic for an example of how stylish and cool he can be in a game like this.

    7. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

@Supah Berry good luck making a cohesive platform game with that entire roster. Not against the idea but I imagine it'd feel super lame and fan gamey. I hated SSBB's subspace emissary for that reason.

      Hot take I know.

    8. StaticMania

Sonic isn't really that different in Project M...

It's probably just the animations really (animations being easier to read was universal)

Up Smash and Down Smash could be changed without messing with his playstyle too much.

    9. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

So you like the way Sonic is in vanilla smash bros?

Sonic's playstyle is near universally hated especially right now because he's a campy mess. Even though he's 100% intended to be a Fox-style rush down character. No one plays him that way though because it's too easy to camp with his moveset. There's a lot with Sonic I'd change but I'm just saying I'm way happier with how he is represented in PM. The way a character feels is more than just their gameplay. Animations are huge, which PM does a great job at. Sonic does a flip and a pose after landing a homing attack in PM. Sonic flare and Sonic eagle being used in his kit in PM feel so right. Smash bros was a huge missed opportunity for Sonic.

    10. StaticMania

      I can't answer that question.

But I roughly, loosely, practically said I'm fine with his animations being changed.

  14. Sometimes reading people's bad opinions makes my adrenaline go up

  15. A big pet peeve of mine is when cool looking sonic fan games have constant obnoxious voice clips for everything a character does

Christ you get this all the time with model swaps in Generations mods and anything else similar. It's a problem that's been around for a long time, and it's not going away anytime soon. People don't get subtlety and nuance.

EDIT: Actually that Sonic Unity example isn't nearly as bad as I thought it was off the top of my head. But yeah, it happens a lot

    5. Diogenes

yeah it's real easy to go overboard with voice clips. anything more than a quick, subtle grunt you've got to be careful with or you can end up driving the player nuts.

even professionally made games aren't immune to it

    6. Blue Blood

      Blue Blood

Unleashed was kind bad, but Unleashed Wii was even worse

No seriously why did Sonic's voice and so many other sound effects have that echo on them in Unleashed Wii? Was it an artistic choice to reflect how empty and barren the levels were?

a fast werehog would've been terrifying but awesome

  22. Would you guys ever like to see Eggman playable in a maingame again? If so how would you like him to play? Just like his old self in SA2 or totally different? Or should the man stay as nothing more than a boss fight at the end of a stage?

    1. Thigolf

Nothing should ever play like a SA2 mech ever again

    2. Diogenes

make him gamma but good. give him a jet pack, rocket propelled roller skates, and a ray gun. that wouldn't be the most "eggman" kind of gameplay, but it's about as much as you could do in a sonic game; something more fitting would be better served in a spinoff where they could go all-in on a different kind of gameplay.

    3. Lord-Dreamerz

Sure it would be cool to see Eggman playable again if they can figure out something gameplay wise that is both fun and interesting for him somehow.

    4. Sean

give him Super Monkey Ball gameplay where he just rolls around environments with his egg-shaped body

    5. Guy Strong

      Guy Strong

Something I always really liked about the egg walker was that it allowed for Eggman to be playable in his classic egg mobile without breaking the game, and it was such a simple solution: just add legs.

Though that's a really neat idea to essentially make him a human egg robo. Rocket propelled skates, a jetpack, and a little gun would be a fun way to incorporate him into Sonic's style of gameplay while avoiding making him a giant clumsy tank essentially.

I had an idea where he'd basically play just like his 'man of the year' self bouncing around with his big body and using roller skates to get around faster. But I never took it very seriously. Thinking about it more it may be the best way to do it without delving back into character roulette status.

    6. TheOcelot

Eggman can ride around in his "egg-o-matic".

    7. Celestia

Put him in the mech from Fighters. I don't have any deep reasoning for this I just like the design

Also yeah I'd like to see him playable again. I always found it a little strange it was a one time thing. At least his stages in SA2 are fun imo (compared to Tails' stages especially).

    8. TCB

Make him like Cortex from Twinsanity but better

    9. JezMM

I always liked the idea of him piloting the classic Egg Mobile, with collectable attachments/transformations (mixture of new stuff as well as classic boss equipment) to fight enemies, do platforming stuff, access new areas and complete puzzles.

"Boss Fights" for his gameplay could involve a reversal of the typical scenario - he attaches to a boss vehicle (like the Egg Dragoon, Egg Albatross etc... or for a grand finale, the Egg Carrier even!?) and has to complete an objective (like methodically destroying a building or levelling a forest etc - unless he's doing something heroic of course) while under attack from waves of smaller enemies or a bigger/equally sized mech/monster of the week etc.
