I'm loving Eggman in this, the sheer tonnage of missiles and explosions he causes is loads of fun - if you have more than one Eggman in a race, it's complete chaos.¬†ūüėÜ

Nestor reacted to batson in Do cultural values affect how Sonic is portrayed?
True, but even so, the Japanese typically haven't been able to completely rid their incarnations of Sonic from their Japanese-ness. In most older western versions of the character (SatAM, AoStH, early Archie, various commercials, ect) Sonic was very hungry for attention, always bragging about how cool he was. In most incarnations written by Japanese writers however, Sonic isn't nearly as concerned with making sure that others adore his coolness. This is obviously a result of the cultural difference between the American "look at me!" mentality and the Japanese more socially reserved behaviour. Sonic is still cocky in Japanese versions, but in a very different way to the socially pro-active American way.
For many years I've often heard it said that when The Simpsons premiered in Japan back in the days when Bart was essentially the series main focus of attention, Japanese viewers were put of by the character to the point where Japanese advertising for the show started to focus more on Lisa of all characters. I'm not sure to what extent this story is factual, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it's true. It demonstrates how an attention-whore (if you excuse the term) like Bart Simpson and western Sonic comes of in Japan.

I'm eager to play a Replica of Dr Eggman in the game but I'm even more eager to play a Replica of Sir Lancelot in a few weeks!!...
I love HARDlight's games, I think they just lack a storyline!!...

This is the story in my head when I play SONIC FORCES : SPEED BATTLE : Dr Eggman is about to conquer planet Earth in SONIC FORCES (the console game) but he is training his army of Replicas to do so, therefore every race you play in SPEED BATTLE is a training of his Replicas with Phantom Ruby's prototypes and that's why every runner appears in red cubes like every Replica!!...

EDIT : I've just obtained Dr Eggman, he is so great!!...

I don't mind racers like Zazz and Jingle Bell Amy, because they can only really do their thing if they are out ahead. Both characters have extremely limited options to make up any amount of significant ground, which balances out the terror they can cause when they do get the lead. If you can get enough of a lead to put an obstacle or two between you and them, there is really nothing they can do about it for the rest of the race.
I have noticed a steep decline in the usage of characters like Spring Cream and Santa Big, who IMO are the real terrors. Tikal is annoying at best compared to those two. The ability to completely wall off 3 out of 4 lanes is absolutely cracked and the spotty collision detection in corkscrews makes them completely un-dodgeable, even if you can maneuver into the correct lane. I'm not sure if people are just shying away from them because they are cheap, or the AI racer pool stopped using them...

Huh, I'd actually been enjoying the changes they made with the last update - Vector's bubble attack now does damage (elevating from most pointless rare character), Invincibility has slowed slightly, the ring guzzling boost of treasure hunter Knuckles and spy Rouge takes less rings and is faster (making it less suicidal), the eminently pointless slash attack of Black Knight Sonic has had its range extended and that blasted light sphere attack of Tikal's has been nerfed so it no longer does damage.
I was struggling with connectivity issues significantly the other day though; I wonder if they were having problems to begin with. Seems fine today however, I've had a bunch of decent runs with only one race with connection losses.

Okay, so this stuff has been driving me crazy. Not just when it was brought up last March, but for a long, long time prior to that. So I did something I've been meaning to do for some time now.
Over the past year, between other projects and stuff I've been working on, I've been chipping away at the following: Basically a list of virtually every major component of the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise that was available to the writers of the Archie Comics Sonic the Hedgehog publication at the time. That means no cartoon stuff, no anime, no Japanese game materials. We're talking the games released in the US, their manuals, and their contents.

Okay, fine. I'm ready to play ball. Let's see how much more there is that went untouched -- all before Ian came along, mind. He was kind of a game changer (no pun intended) in that respect.
I have over 8,000 words, about 20 pages of material here. And it's not even being especially thorough! But it is more than I feel like could be reasonably posted here, so I've attached it as a .txt document for anyone brave enough to go through it.
Oh, and please forgive the formatting -- it was intended to be a forum post here, until I finished and saw the size of what I'd created. Just attaching it seemed like the best compromise.

I do so love these moments that legitimately make me question the particular reality that Penders is living in. This is one of the most utterly deluded statements I've heard from the guy, and given the utterly bountiful crop of absurd gibberish to emerge from his mouth over the years, that's really saying something. Beyond the obvious problems of in-universe logic this would cause given the blatant differences between Julie-Su and Shade in terms of design and personality and backstory, this logic SEVERELY undermines what Penders has been screaming about for nearly the last decade- if Shade is literally one and the same as his character, then by that logic, SEGA owns K'nox and all the other derivatives he's concocted for his idiotic project.
Indeed. It's a Superman and Captain Marvel/Shazam situation- there are certain surface similarities, but actual lore and characterization and design are very different. Shade is indeed a female soldier who defects from an evil Echidna Army, much like Julie, but that's where it ends. Shade was a ranking officer in the Nocturnus who was loyal to the cause until realizing that Imperator Ix was in fact evil, and she behaves as you would expect a disciplined, principled soldier to act. Julie-Su was a low level soldier in the Dark Legion who was secretly related to the Legion's leadership, and left due to the urgings of the Soul Touch, and is a hot tempered spitfire who possesses cybernetics.
It is literally declaring that by deign of both being fruit, an Apple and an Orange are Exactly The SAme Thing.
At this stage of things I'm pretty convinced he just likes to talk rather than actually do anything. In the 9 years that have passed since the trial's conclusion and the announcement he has produced nothing of substance pertaining to this project. Until he actually implements this, it IS just talk, and if he DOES go through with this, then he's even more of a hypocrite and a fool than we have come to believe.
Tough call. This project hasn't really been released yet and Penders isn't making money. So far all he's done is made some insignificant arts and crafts projects and some very, very ugly art, but he has not in fact released his App or anything else. So far he's not done anything that'd be worth getting worked up over. It's why SEGA has done nothing, because in the end its not really worth it. It remains to be seen if EA feels the same way, but given Penders perennial inability to release the goddamned thing, I doubt they're gonna make a move just because he's TALKING about his stupid, nonsensical idea of merging Shade with Julie-Su.
Also, Penders has an incredibly selective memory when it comes to the veracity of things like forum posts. When its something that favors HIS position it's fine. When it's something that undermines him, then it's not credible. He recently called someone bringing up a past instance of him conceding SEGA's ownership of his work as 'Fake Evidence'. As said repeatedly, he's a hypocrite, plain and simple.

That was the original idea - the Sonic the Comic (StC) stories were based off of the (now non-canon) Western Sega of America localised backstory for Sonic, where a kindly human scientist called Dr Ovi Kintobor creates a machine to absorb all of the evil on the planet Mobius into special six gems - the Chaos Emeralds - with the aim of then finding the seventh emerald to destroy the evil for good. Unfortunately, before the evil can be neutralised, the good doctor has an accident and the machine is destroyed, with the evil in the emeralds changing and warping him into his exact opposite - Dr Ivo Robotnik.
While it sounds odd to us now (as the current storyline abandoned this old western backstory for the original Japanese version), back at the time StC was actually sticking extremely closely to the actual game lore of that period in the West.
This incidentally is why StC portrayed Super Sonic as evil - as the Chaos Emeralds were supposed to be filled with evil energy, the logical extrapolation was that if Sonic used their power, then Super Sonic would be evil too. As back then only Sonics 1 and 2 had been released, there was precious little to go on in the games regarding Super Sonic's exact nature, but StC made an effort to work with what lore they'd been given in a logical fashion.

Partially for himself, partially to get money from guests.  I basically think of Sonic as a hedonism-themed hero while Eggman is a hedonism-themed villain.  Sonic loves to be happy but not at the expense of others, while Eggman loves to be happy but is okay with stepping over others to get it, and also okay with exploiting their desire to be happy to help fund his schemes.

Leave it to Penders to toss out the part of the name that makes sense while finding something even more laughable to replace it.
And you know what's really hilarious? He had a perfect excuse to keep the Dark Legion name as is while engaging in some legitimate worldbuilding. He's recently revealed that the 'Echyd'nya' dwell underground. As such, one might be able to make the case that in a society of underground dwellers, 'Darkness' might actually have GOOD connotations rather than negative ones. Its something that Terry Pratchett did with Discworld, elaborating on how the Dwarves of that setting, being a subterranean people, view Darkness is positive terms as a culture- indeed, rather than 'enlightened', they use 'endarkened'.
A similar logic could prevail with the Echyd'nya here, given that he has explicitly decided they dwell underground... provided he had the patience to set this up and establish it as being a part of Echyd'nya culture, then the 'Dark Legion', which sounds blatantly sinister to us, would instead mean something more like 'The Bright Legion' or 'The Legion of Light', and thus illustrate precisely HOW the Legion see themselves within the context of Echyd'nya culture.
But this is Penders we're talking about, so of course, we get something silly that was (most likely unintentionally) ripped off from Yu-Gi-Oh. Gotta love it. For a given definition of 'love'.

It's quite possible that a USSR equivalent never existed on Sonic's earth; it's always been my (admittedly headcanon) thought that the difference between our Earth and Sonic's is the presence of the Chaos Emeralds and all the changes in history that their existence on Earth would create (the US being a Federation, the echidnas somewhat replacing the Aztecs, etc).
Perhaps in Sonic's Earth's timeline, Rasputin managed to obtain all the Chaos Emeralds and destroy the Revolution....

(Should I make it another "filling the blanks"? Eh, no one likes those anyway.)
There are few more iconic images in this franchise than golden rings that Sonic collects in almost every game. And yet we have no idea what they are and arguably the don't even exist story-wise.
But that would be boring answer, so let's dig deeper. Besides, there are very few game that acknowledge existence of rings: SA1 (Casinopolis), Heroes (one of Chaotix missions) Shadow (Tails mission), Sonic Rivals 2 (Knuckles and Silver story) and kinda Sonic Unleashed (Light Speed Shoes).
    0) For starters I need to point there are numerous kinds of rings. One of most common are Warp Rings, like ones Sonic used in the movie, or leading to special stage or next act. Red Star Rings, Chaos Rings, Sling Rings, list is long. Let's focus on Classic Golden Rings.
!) First thought is just "money" ala Mario Coins. But then why rings, not IDK gems or money bags? it makes more sense that this is "Donkey Kong Bananas" situation, where rings are so valuable that CAN be used as currency, even though they have other usage.
    2) I think we can all agree than temporary invincibility or Super Sonic fuel is purely gameplay mechanic. We seen plenty cutscenes where Sonic goes Super and he never mentioned checking for rings. Or gets hit and no rings fall from him.
    3) So most popular idea is that they are strange fuel, either for machines or living beings. I'll also make a hypothesis that most other rings (Tails Skypatrol Weapon, Shadow Inhibitors) are probably Golden Rings modified to server this purpose. Tails claimed that Circus Park is made of rings, so it make sense they can be used as building material.
So far I (mostly) just reiterated facts from the game, but that still doesn't explain what rings are.
My theory is that they are small portion chaos energy condensed into physical object. They usually appear around objects of great Chaos Energy (like Emeralds), but due to their chaotic nature they can be anywhere (maybe even on Planet Wisp or Blaze Dimension. or maybe those instances are not canon). Maybe they really do float, or lay anywhere or have to be mined like coal, but Eggman regularly uses them for his machines. And Sonic keeping hundred of rings despite having no pockets is just cartoon logic that we must accept from this world. (According to Sonic News/Unused Dialogue from Generations even Tails doesn't know what Sonic does with all those rings).
And what do you guys think?

In fairness, Forces is a functional game at least; it doesn't have the glitches and insane loading times of 06. It also doesn't have the odd 'realistic' art style 06 went for, or the Elise romance plot. Forces's main issues are bland level design and plotting; it's not technically bad like 06, but it also isn't a really good game. It's just.... very mediocre.

Nestor reacted to DabigRG in Sonic Forces Speed Battle (iOS - Hardlight Studio)
I hate to say it, but Vector (and while we're at it Rouge) is not a very good character in this game. I kinda struggle to see the point of his unique bubblegum item(which blocks your use of items until fully popped, but otherwise), invincibility isn't that great when you're constantly getting it without much of a boost to your speed, and the shockingly uncommon fireball is a fireball. I have yet to really do well in a match with him and while he doesn't suck anywhere as bad as Tails or Charmy, it pains me to say that I've mainly played him lately out of stubbornness.
In better news, I finally got the hang of Tikal's choice move after getting hit with it a few times. Thanks to that in contrast to some fairly decent opponents and a more stable connection than usual, I was able to have consistent fun for a bit. And I've just unlocked the Guardian Angel and a day or two prior, I officially breeched the price tag by using the ad option to get He who brings the havoc.

So who do you think they'll add next, considering they're currently doing an Egg Pawn attacks Tangle and Whisperthe Resistance event.

Yeah, I've been seeing more Whispers once she became avaialble, for better or worse.
Clearly Sega noticed because they swapped her in with Tangle as a 5.99 purchase.
Huh. I've never done that, probably because I'm smarter about money.
