  1. And of course some complete asshole decides it's completely okay to set off fireworks at 11 PM on a Sunday night and wake up the entire neighborhood. Fuck these people, seriously.

    1. PublicEnemy1

That sucks. Something similar happened in my small town at 2:26 AM a week ago. Except it was a gunshot.

    2. Failinhearts

Welcome to my life tomorrow as Canada Day nears.

And also, THE FUCK?! Please tell me nobody was hurt!

    3. Cayenne

I feel you. Some people in my city really love to do this during parties, holidays or soccer matches and I know how annoying this can be. The worst one was at 4:00 AM.

    4. Menace2Society

So by any chance, are you living in my neighborhood? Because that’s what’s literally happening at my home rn.

    5. PublicEnemy1

@Failinhearts Nah, it was some drunk-ass hillbilly shooting a gun at some some doe for pooping on his property. Don't worry, I heard he's taking both alcohol addiction and anger management classes.

    6. Failinhearts

Thank god nobody was killed at least... and thank god he's being treated too.

  2. I can't even bring myself to discuss what the next game will be like. It's not going to be the game that any of us wants, no matter how hard we want to believe otherwise.

    1. TCB

I want a sonic game i can find fun. But what do you find "fun" in sonic games anyway? Is it the more classic oriented affairs ala Mania? The 3D style of Adventure? The 2D/3D blend of boost? Whatever the hell Lost World had? Why even discuss anything at this point in time anyway?

    2. Miragnarok

I'd accept a Rise of Lyric-level dumpster fire as long as it doesn't have Wisps, Green Hill, Classic Sonic, etc.

    3. SonicWind

As long as it's good, I don't care what it is. That's my say on the matter.

I don’t care about him either but I just thought I’d answer your question.

It is unlikely that "osmium" is the first thought to enter your head upon waking. And that's a damn good thing because if so, this would not bespeak well of your mental wellbeing.

The flesh sack that uttered this statement will receive his comeuppance.

Funny enough, the Darkwing Duck comics had something like that in the pilot story arc, with a megacorp buying out everything including "air" (intentionally unspecified).

Opposite Day is pretty meh for me, bar the final "I'm Squidward" gag.

    3. Forte-Metallix

I'm With Stupid, for starting the trend of Patrick being a stupid, selfish prick.

  13. When it comes to the "bad" Spongebob seasons (5,6-9A) usually the largest complaints are about flanderization, or gross out, or how creepy Spongebob acts, but the largest problem to me is just how absolutely boring most of it is. Most of the episodes from this time have simplistic to basically nonexistent plots, everything is extremely slow and padded out, and the animation is very lethargic and stiff to go along with it.

    1. Forte-Metallix

Yeah, a lot of episodes are plagued with blatant filler, especially the specials.

Truth or Square, the Atlantis Movie, SB vs the Big One, and especially SpongeBob, You're Fired were all at least 80% filler.

    2. Osmium

Also think about all the episodes that spend a whole minute on a joke that wasn't funny in the first place like the infamous Mrs. Puff doorbell scene

    3. Ferno

the atlantis special was weird because it was such a not-so-big feeling special but they called it a "TV Movie" and released a tie-in game for it like it was a big deal, etc.

it was just willy wonka but with spongebob characters and everyone sings a song at specific points like oh wow

    4. SupahBerry

      Dear GODKeep Bikini Bottom Beautiful.

It's one thing when I first saw (what I think was) One Coarse Meal and felt that "Okay, something's definitely wrong here." But the real breaking point for me was when I watched KBBB.

It has nothing to do with the abusing Squidward crap. It's because of how I spent 11 minutes of my life watching a policeman smack a ticket on his face.

When it was over I almost instantly put on an older episode, which thankfully made me feel much better.

    5. Forte-Metallix

I still think Truth or Square was the worst, though: A "TV movie" meant to celebrate the franchise's 10th anniversary, advertised as going to finally answer the show's biggest questions, like the Krabby Patty formula, as well as have groundbreaking changes like SpongeBob and Sandy tying the knot.

Come the premiere, and it was nothing but filler, bait-and-switches, and celebrity cameos shoehorned in without having any of them actually contribute to the special. (A problem very common with this show, unfortunately)

    6. Osmium

I usually forget Truth or Square exists, but yeah, it's phenomenally bad for the reasons stated above. It's one of the few episodes of the whole show that feels like they're actually giving you a giant middle finger for falling for the hype and bothering to watch.

  17. In case anyone was wondering I still feel every action is driven by selfish motivations. Are you offended yet?

    1. Sonic Fan J

      Sonic Fan J

Not at all and find that it is an easy thing to agree with. I think the harder part is recognizing the inherent selfishness of our actions and both accepting that while balancing any desire we have to not hurt others in the process.

    2. SupahBerry

Being "selfish" sometimes doesn't nessasairly mean you never care what others think for every moment of your life. It's important to see from others' points of view, but always remember that your point of view matters too.

    3. Osmium

@SupahBerry I agree. I'm talking about an intrinsic and inherent selfishness that plagues all of us and every organism on Earth. Even actions that seem selfless like charity are meant to reach a harmony in the community and so is indirectly selfish as it benefits everyone, including the charitable.

Every impulse for an action in the mind is directed for self-preservation or self-benefit as we are inherently biased and a worldview is centric towards the possessor of it.

    4. E-122-Psi

I have to say I kinda feel so, at least for myself. I have never felt this big super idealistic breakthrough where I think something I done was utterly courageous and thinking only of others. Even some "nice" things I do I feel I only done because it was pragmatically better than living with the guilt.

I often wonder whether this is genuinely because I am driven TOO much by selfish/apathetic impulses compared to others or that is just genuinely how life is, being a mostly self serving individual who feels a bit of passive conscience from time to time (maybe that's why so many heroes in fiction not motivated by ego tend to not see their actions as a big deal).

    15. JezMM

Goombella for sure, she my girl since the start of the adventure so I always kept her out for most crucial scenes (unless it was a scene that specifically resolved their introduction arc in a chapter etc).  The only thing I dislike is that her implied romantic interest in Mario at the very end came out of nowhere and seemed really silly (though partially because literally all the other three female party members want to get in Mario's overalls in some way or another and we didn't need a 4th)

  20. The first Paper Mario is good, but god is it basic and plain compared to TTYD. An example of a series where the sequel completely overshadows everything the first installment did.

    1. Osmium

It doesn't help that it takes a good 45 minutes to an hour to even get action commands in the first.

    2. DanJ86

And sadly never got the Virtual Console treatment.

    3. SupahBerry

And also an example of how anything followed said sequel completely failed to deliver what it did. Almost like they just got so lucky with it but then they do nothing else with that luck.

    4. PC the Hedgehog

      PC the Hedgehog

Honestly, I disagree. I'd take an hour to get to action commands over hours and hours of having to backtrack through the same locations over and over again just because the developers felt the need to pad out of the game.

I'll take the original over the sequel in every aspect but story. No one can deny the story in the sequel is leaps and bounds more interesting than the original.

  22. People who think that colonizing Mars is analogous to the first people crossing continents are incredibly ignorant.

    1. Sonic Fan J

      Sonic Fan J

It's a totally different beast to be sure, especially since crossing continents when it would have been first done was just a side effect of the nomadic nature of humans pre-civilization as we know it. Between the Russia-Alaska land bridge and all of the way's that Asia, Europe, and Africa are connected over land it really isn't big deal. Now crossing a few million miles in a tin can with limited supplies and no way to replenish them and then using said limited supplies as the a basis for changing an entire alien world so that we can live there in any capacity is a pretty big deal and is in no way analogous with the tribe traveling in search of a new hunting ground as such nomadic inclinations would have resulted in. At least that's my opinion and I'll stick with it until I see something that convinces me otherwise.

So, a third Storybook game? lol

  24. This may spark a debate, but I don't really get why some people get so invested in this series for the characters or overarching narrative. Sonic characters are about as shallow and lacking as they come and the stories are absolutely lackluster. There's so many other things out there with way more engaging universes than anything Sonic has to offer.

    1. Heckboy

nostalgia and, in some cases, lack of exposure to culture

    2. Your Vest Friend

      Your Vest Friend

I find them fun and entertaining, therefore I am invested in them. Other series just means more characters to invest in, not replacement.

    3. Kiah

I like the characters. The bright and colorful crew have appeal, are fun and definitely have some potential but like many other things involving Sonic it is often squandered.

And not all of the stories in Sonic have been bad. Recently yes as I would never deny that but all of them no. Also the characters aren’t that shallow where I can’t find some positive traits with pretty much every single one of them.

Oh and I’m not really interested in any other franchises. Especially not in comparison to Sonic as it is numero uno in my book.

    4. JosepHenry

I'm sorry but no. There isn't. Sonic characters may not be the most fleshed out and interesting in their games... But that also opens doors for us, fans of these characters to think about them and have fun with them. Sonic characters are actually as unique as it can get, and as any character can be expanded as much as we want. Is a really cute and colorful cast of characters which has have the most potential ever by their basic personality alone. They can be really entertaining, is why fan stuff to me is more than half of the fun.

    5. Sonic Fan J

      Sonic Fan J

Hmm, how best to put it... I got pulled in as a child due to the imagery and gameplay above all else, but what narrative and character was there appealed to me. As an adult what lore was there and what characterization was there still entertained me and I appreciated that and allowed it to pull me in since it entertained me and made me feel good. That really was the extent of it as I know that Sonic isn't nearly as good as any number of works I can name off the top of my head, but the thing is, and this has always been true for any of any franchise who has been told to go elsewhere for better quality and more care in the things they look for in Sonic; none of those other things ARE Sonic. Doesn't matter that there are better platformers; they aren't Sonic. Doesn't matter that they are better characters and character arcs; they aren't Sonic. Doesn't matter that there are far better stories and narratives; they are not Sonic. That is pretty much it for me no matter how you break it down and argue or point out and discredit, Sonic and only Sonic is Sonic, and that is where my emotions are invested for better or worse. It's not that I don't enjoy other things, but only Sonic gives me Sonic even at his worst and that is enough to make me care and keep coming back. So for me at least there is no debate as only Sonic can be Sonic and that has never not been the case nor do I expect that to ever not be the case. Apologies though if I came off a little aggressive there.

    6. Tornado

but i love dbz with even less drama

    7. Celestia

Well, it helps they have cool designs.

Seriously though, on top of what others are saying, most of the cast has had at least one decent portrayal (i.e. Shadow in SA2, Silver in the comics, etc.) It's like a lot of long-running franchises with multiple continuities, really.

    8. SonicWind

Maybe so, but I've been interested in this franchise since I was a kid. I'm not gonna give it up when it's given me so many fond memories.

    9. ThePrinceOfSaiyans

No, they aren't particularly well developed, but they're likable enough, and I don't think it's too much to ask for an engaging story. Sonic Adventure 2 was far from perfect, but it was engaging. That's all I really ask for. Stories like the ones seen in Colors and Lost World, for example, pull me out of the experience.

    10. Kuzu the Boloedge

      Kuzu the Boloedge

They're invested because people either like their designs or the stories and personalities that are associated with them. I don't get why this is such a difficult concept for you to understand.

    11. ebongrey23

For some time I've been way more interested in this franchise then others I know. The music and characters are pretty cool to me.

    12. Monkey Destruction Switch

      Monkey Destruction Switch

I mean, you're not wrong about the characters' personalities usually being depicted shallowly or inconsistently and the stories usually not being that good, but Sonic just has that special something that keeps people engaged - a combination of the aesthetics and the pieces of personality and lore that we get in the best portrayals. It gives people a serious hankering for them to be done justice, which has happened in the past sometimes even if it's not all that often.

I feel like objectively you have a point, but in practice there's just something about Sonic that pulls people in even if it's lacking in consistent quality.

    13. Kuzu the Boloedge

      Kuzu the Boloedge

A lot of the most popular characters across fiction aren't really that deep or complex, the same holds true here. This isn't really something that you can explain with logic, people like what they like.

    14. Strickerx5

Because things like the adventure games were literally the coolest shit to me when I first played them. Shaping my perception of what this series could be for years to come, even after that initial light dimmed and the flaws started to show themselves to me (basically when I starting actually visiting message boards to find people ripping them to shreds...).

Add in the cool character designs. Characters that, on paper, should be pretty damn interesting. The glimpses of greatness and down right amazing moments that we get every so often across the games (hell I still think most of 06's CGI cutscenes are great because of this). The comics and shows which add a lot to what the world could be in these games. And the general presentation that these elements use to get and I just can't help but to care about the characters, world, and narrative. Because they've been showing bits of life all over the place and those sparks are downright beautiful when they show up. There's potential in all this and I'll be damned to see it die because of the tired old "lol, story doesn't matter and sonic stories suck anyway so why bother" mentality (which, again, completely contradicts what even the classics were trying to do back with their limited hardware).

Though, I will say that I still think some of the plots (Unleashed, Black Knight, ect.) are actually ok so hey.

  25. I just realized it's 2019 which means this year we can say there hasn't been a good Sonic game for 25 years (besides Mania).

    Don't take this too seriously
