  1. I'm probably going to sound dickish...but why does my family always want to do stuff with me for my birthday? Like, I just don't see why I have to go to a restaurant with a bunch of people for a day I don't give a crap about or want anything at all from.

....maybe because they love you and want to spend time with you on your special day? i do understand how you feel as i don't want anything extravagant for my birthday as well but...yeah.

Honestly they probably just assume that you want to do something for your birthday and force it upon you. I think if you really told them they'd understand.

And I don't think you like a a...y'know... at all. Perhaps you could have worded your thoughts better, but I think they're completely valid!

Yeah I have no idea why anyone would want to do something nice for you either if all you do is be ungrateful and act like a jerk about it.

Naw, fuck what the family wants out of you. Do what's good for yourself.

Okay that was worded shittily but I honestly don't understand how I'm an ungrateful dick if maybe i just don't want to do anything for my birthday.

You're not. It's your birthday. The rest of the world still goes on as usual, and you don't have to treat it like it's something special if it doesn't feel special to you.

Communication is key. Tell your family you don't want anything.

I have told them that for my birthday I don't want to gather with anyone or do anything really before but the response I got was literally "too bad".

Well, you are just gonna have to live with it until you move out or turn 18. I don't think you are an ungrateful dick I understand.

Okay it's not that big a deal at all it's just an inconvenience let's not treat this like it's some totalitarian thing PLEASE, I'm just complaining like usual.

Dude they're taking you out to dinner, going out of their way to treat you and pay attention to you because it's your birthday.

You're essentially telling them you can't be bothered to spend time with them even when they're the ones going to all the trouble. That's ungrateful. You're a kid, relax and be grateful you have parents that care and are trying to connect with you.

...what restaurant they were planning to take you to

to add to what sam said, you only have one set of parents, once they are gone, they are gone.

"Look, I spent all this money and time on you although you told me you didn't want it, and I've even went through the trouble of dragging you here, ignoring your feelings on the matter, so I can be a good parent. So logically, it's you who's being a selfish dick."

Dude I am grateful that I have parents that care and try to connect to me, I of course love them very much and I do spend time with them, but the matter is is that I usually like to be alone and I just wasn't expecting to do anything for this birthday because I thought I was getting too old to be going out to restaurants or parties or celebrating my birthday at all since I don't fancy it and I don't find it a big deal. But I guess I see what you mean, they only mean for me to have a good time since I'm their son.

Too old to be going out to restaurants or parties or celebrating your birthday at all? Man you serious? I get the feeling of not wanting to do anything on your birthday if you're not really in a celebratory mood, but to think you're too old to go out for dinner/celebrating your birthday with family is absurd.

    19. LoseR

      LoseR

No matter how old you are birthdays can always be celebrated. And although it's totally fine if you legitimately don't want to celebrate them, the truth is that every year your birthday becomes less and less significant and you shouldn't steer away from enjoying them if you legitimately want to.

I hear you, personally just appreciate that your parents are willing to do this for you because they have a son they care for and love.

I'm dragging this out now but now I just want to apologize since I understand why people would tell me I'm ungrateful for what I said since it's an act of being kind and wanting to spend time with me despite my objection to it. It's the principle of the matter that counts I guess. Like I said I don't like celebrating my birthday at all but people are just trying to be nice. Honestly I just have a hard time believing that my family or anyone honestly wants to spend time with me or genuinely really likes me because I don't really see what there really is to like about me at all but whatever, I guess I might as well go with it.

That's not a healthy mindset to have bro. Learn to take people's intentions at face value - not everyone's out to get you and you should cherish those that really value their time with you. No apology needed here, I remember being an angsty teen. Just try to be self-aware about your attitude with others and let yourself be happy.
