I like the general idea of a well-known and beloved development team working on a mainstream Sonic game. Even if they've never worked on anything like a Sonic game before it would instill more hope in me than the idea of anything Sonic Team could do at this point. If they've well and truly dissolved it as a "team" than I can't say I mourn it's "loss" in all honesty. The circus surrounding these 2.5D titles needed to get itself in check. I can only hope there's an attempt being made to do so.
That isn't to say that they've seen success literally every time they've done this. Bioware kind of just kicked their B-Team over to Chronicles and ended up making a game that only seemed to create problems, even past the point where you'd think it'd be relevant (Penderp) but I'm more optimistic than not about it.

100% this. I suspect that the next title will be primarily have SOA's hands in it rather than SOJ, in addition to the possibility of bringing in an outside reputable company. Indications are that the Japanese presence that actually wants to make Sonic games has moved to America and that SOA will manage the title. Sonic has always had a large impact in western markets but not so much in the east where other brands may be more appealing for SOJ.
To me this is very underrated knowledge because SOA and SOJ have been squabbling since forever. And SOA knows its fanbase. I wont actually get excited until I start hearing and seeing concrete things but this is a substantive reason to hope that Sonic may be heading in a positive direction once again.

Edit: I meant to put SOA and SOJ in quotes because the "official" Sonic Team as we knew it has been disbanded.

While it’s understandable that a lot of us presume Sonic Team will develop the next game, it’s important to consider that they’ve reportedly been dissolved and absorbed into a larger studio that are seemingly working on other franchises now. While the 4chan post is likely bogus, I do think the possibility of the next mainline game not being developed internally by SEGA is a very real one.
Given the relocation of various Sonic Team veterans to the U.S, I can absolutely see SEGA seeking an acclaimed western studio to work with and develop the next instalment. They’ve possibly been preparing for such a thing since Iizuka’s move in 2016. For one thing, I think the marketing element of “Hey guys, THIS team is making the next game!” would work great (as opposed to "Big Red who?"), plus the reception of Sonic Mania may have affirmed to them a notion that a team located in the west (where the franchise is more popular) may have a slightly more accurate cultural ear to the ground with regard to what the zeitgeist considers a solid Sonic game (as fragmented as that zeitgeist is). Kind of a “It worked with 2D, so let’s do 3D now” type approach. I dunno, just a few thoughts.

Came across this archived post from June. I know “anonymous 4chan post” isn’t a convincing credential, but haven’t seen it discussed anywhere which led me to believe perhaps not many people have even seen it to dismiss it. If you google “Sonic” “30th Anniversary” “4chan” the link is still there though.
Again, I’m aware it’s likely bull. Apologies if I’m breaking any rules. Not intentional.

It was supposed to be the day before the actual opening. Probably why Eggman was still in the process of recording PA announcements.
Sand Hill was added fairly late for Tails' story, so it's possible what was made the desert went into it.

    Good point.
Looking at the image again, I am noticing a number of things:
    a. there are a couple of similar colored blasts zipping through the air,
    b. you're right--one of those pink blasts is coming from Phantom Shadow,
    c. a Phantom Chaos in the background is charging similar energy on it's claw; this may be a reference to an attack he could do in at least one of his forms,
    d. [Phantom?] Zavok's blast is shaped more like a ball of ki; he had the ability to fire blasts from his palm at Lava Mountain, but they were orange,
    e. there is only one Zavok.

I feel like, out of all of these, this one just sticks out the absolute most like a sore thumb. From the very first level, you see that exact same blue worm from Desert Ruins shoot through the sand in Green Hill as though it were a resident of Sonic's planet and it gives off that strange vibe of something being a bit off.
Then you see Casino Forest and immediately you're hit with the obvious fact that it's just Silent Forest but with a bunch of lights plastered on top of it. The strange Lost World looking green pastures in the background of Sunset Heights that a lot of people were speculating at the time was there because of crossing dimensions and what not seems to have just been the leftover dregs of Windy Hill.
Then you have stuff like the snake in the first battle with Infinite which sticks out as the only time where the gravity stuff from Lost World with the tube landscapes comes back.
The entire rest of the game kind of feels like it was just built on top of that game and a lot of the concepts and assets were either re-worked or sloppily removed to create this weird Frankenstein's monster of a product.
That entire scene baffles me. Namely, the thing that sticks out the most is how horrific and shitty the background looks. It doesn't even look like something someone would use as a background to test their fan-made Sonic engine.
And the big ball of light (the one that's not the giant sun that Infinite makes) is creating this horrible looking lighting disaster that bounces off Sonic's skin in the worst way. It looks so awful.

Pretty sure it is the case that they switch from pre-rendered to realtime - the cutscene where buddy gets introduced does the same thing. The first half before the character maker is pre-rendered, the second part isn't.

Gotta Go Rational reacted to DabigRG in Sonic Forces Development Speculation (Spoilers)
Looking at the cutscenes(albiet one of questionable quality to say it's 720) now and I think that might just be what they did--whenever Buddy is actually onscreen, the lighting and resolution gets this brighter, somewhat more "thin-liney" look to it. This is particularly noticeable with Eggman, who with a variety of colors to his scheme is darker and smoother looking in most of the scene until he arrives at the top of the Tower.
I'll look up another video just be sure, but yeah.

EDIT: Okay, so the thin white lines I mentioned may have just been an affect of the first video I saw, but there is still a slight difference in terms of how comparatively bright the characters look. Also, the shadows on the characters become more jaggy.

That's the one, thank you! Yeah, I thought that could be a good indicator of giving people a basis for what Eggman might look like in the movie, but I've seen it referenced so little I started to think it might've been fan art or something, ha. I know that the Sonic art in that subsequent image obviously isn't what the hedgehog's movie incarnation will resemble, but I'd say there's a difference between a little fun piece of art to commemorate the end of a phase of the movie's production, and what is presumably a snippet of an actual storyboard image used for the movie.

There is a note mentioning that the answers have been edited a little for clarity (and let's not forget the presence of a translator), so it’s possible Iizuka may have just laughed and literally gave no comment afterwards.

On top of some points already mentioned, I think the audio also contributes a significant amount to the continuing relative popularity of the series. The franchise’s musical legacy is one of the few elements of the series that most fans would probably agree to be an iconic and lasting strength of the games, despite us bickering over everything else.
